  • William Dalrymple in conversation with Tony Curzon Price. Why is Afghanistan so frequently the scene of hegemons' defeats? What should have been done in 2001? Is there any hope for liberal intervention?

The interviewer also comes across as a bit of an apologist for failed imperialist endevours, the 'we failed but out hearts were in the right place' kind. William deftly avoided the interviwer's attem
ts to snare him wonderfully well.

In view of the fast collapse of the Afghan "government as soon as the Americans pulled out , Dalrymple was incredibly prescient, back in 2011.

Hey Hindukaah please know William Dalrymple has spent several years and many much needed in-depth research in Afghanistan. Read his book on the Return of the King on the subject and you will know. Never make a sweeping statement on such a learned person. He is recipient of honorary doctorates from distinguished universities including Princeton .

It's not exactly good promotion for WD's books that towards the end of the interview 23.40 he states that the British (and Indian) forces have lost 4 wars in Afghanistan. That is incorrect. They won the Second and Third Afghan wars. My grandfather served in the Third one btw.

  • @Hindukaash

I have read his book, with due respect, I see big gaps in his analyses. It is "good" review of the British colonial literature. But his analysis is not compatible with the facts of the present day Afghan society and the region as a whole. As an Afghan I see big gaps and contradictions in his work. Though it may be an interesting book (like some years ago The Kite Runner) for western readers.

This guy is a fool and wants to pass himself as an "Afghan Expert" perhaps with only one trip to south Afghanistan with the help of Jigdalek. Of course his main source is British colonial literature of 19th century, which itself is hugely problematic. The problem is that these so-called "experts" lump and categorize people as static who resist any change, thus should be left alone. A huge blunder. It is impossible to categorize a society as there will always be "diversity."

Old comment but I just checked the sources he used and there is a huge trove from Afghan, Persian and Indian sources. He even personally had translated into English original manuscripts from Afghan historians which no Westerner had ever read. I assume you have not contributed anything to the history but feel entitled to criticize?
