The bar that's in the middle of the cow catcher that was used for double heading and their top speed was about 35 mph the reason being is because their brakes weren't the best if they had any breaks at all... This is why they had brakemen... They also didn't have a couplers back in those days they had link and pin it was the brakemen's responsibility to couple the train... It was said back in those days if you were missing a couple of fingers you were a good brakeman a lot of brave men were killed back in those days trying to couple cars
