@khurmiful You are correct, but he also made 15 half centuries against AUS, which is 15 more than you and I. He also made 16 test centuries combined, which is 16 more than you and I. I'd be happy with one test century.

This was perhaps as good as Athers got vs us: It was pre-McGrath & Warne and England had a fine day as Gower scored a superb century. It is comical in a way for when Athers reminisces about Australia & Aussie players smiles & laughter are the go and then remembering the contests triggers a humourous cynicism. It was a bad time for England as Beefy was on his last legs, Dexter was disillusioned with Gower and his stock company, i.e. Lamb did not play as often & Gooch was treated like a panacea. Although they were not perfect players from this era: Athers, Gower, Lamb, Matthews, Reid et al., would have got a better deal these days.
Well said. This was the first ever day of Test cricket I saw live. Knew Atherton by reputation from his 49 in the 1989 Ashes and 1990 home successes. Was very pleased for him on this day and probably didn't appreciate just how bloody good Gower's (and then Stewart's strokeplay was). Australia's top order collapsed that evening and there was hope of a series comeback...
A fine innings. In cricket you get the good with the bad. A few years later he'd be run out for 99 at Lord's v Australia.
I believe that was his last against the Aussies as well😅

His only test century against Australia.

Somewhere out there McGrath was watching and waiting
Run out by a mile lol
Only when you slow it down. Umpire made the right decision without TV replays.
Atherton 96 out
Yep. Bit like Jones being out for about 3 during his 145 in the ODI that summer.
If he'd been given out, it would have been 95 -- the run hadn't been completed.
