In one of the great displays of leg-spin bowling, Shane Warne picked up 12 wickets against South Africa in 1994, including both Darryl Cullinan dismissals
I started watching this and my wife says "Why are you watching that? You're not interested in cricket." I said "I'm not interested in cricket these days because Warnie isn't playing." So why are you watching?" "Because Warnie is playing."
I remember going to watch on the day when South Africa started really well. Warne had been in some newspaper strife for texting or something. When he came on to bowl, lots of people actually booed. Then he started skittling them and the crowd were eating out of his hand! It became like a Shakespeare play and Warney was definitely the main character. We had some incredible fielders then. Warney left to a standing ovation!
Greatest leg spinner of all time. Special mention to Mark Taylors slip fielding as well. Taylor was a masterful first slipper, the best specialist fieldsman I've seen. Mark Waugh (with honourable mention to Jonty Rhodes) is the best all round fieldsman I've seen.
@@TheForge10 oh please. all nations and all teams sledge as hard as each other. just aussies are better at it because we sledge each other all the time. dont blame us for your thin skin.
You can hear the admiration for Warne from Benaud. And of course, an acknowledgement of the skill, hard work and discipline. I'm sure the respect was mutual.
He was a great. Watching this as a South African and remembering how great this team of ours was. We struggled against him. Class bowler. Agree with another comment...don't enjoy cricket as much as in this era
The catch "Junior" takes at bat pad was amazing.....why he was one of the best all round catchers in the history of the game Plus Symcox bowled around the lags??.....If Warne had only done it once in his career you would call it a fluke.....but he did that a number of times.
'Well, that looks to be the one that Warne shows them". LOL Brilliant Mr Benaud, what a cricket brain Ritche Benaud had. Everybody else but poor Darryl Cullinan could see that coming it seemed
Warne has got many a wickets with that flipper. Also, bowled round the legs, extreme spin, tail enders don't stand a chance against him. With McGrath and Steve waugh, he ruled the 90s and early 2000s.
I was at the SCG for days 1,2,3 of this test. The first day when Warne took 7 for was brilliant. 2nd day Slats and AB grinded away to give Aus a lead. 3rd day SA fought hard and Warne didnt have success against them til day 4. I wasnt at day 4 but SA fought back well thanks to Jonty and Donald. Then Fast fanie. I went to day 5 when SA got in front and McDermott then played his shots. DAmien Martyns shot was unforgettable and so was Mcrath. Great win by SA, esp. Fast FAnie de Villiers.
Loved watching this, but knowing what happened when Damien Martyn et al collapsed on the final morning makes it hard to watch as an Aussie fan. 12 wickets and still losing. Damn. That was quite a summer of cricket - Warne, Cullinan etc, set (for me at least) against bushfires everywhere in and around Sydney: I loved how the Saffers helped put on a fundraising match for bushfire relief, even with their busy schedule. That was a nice gesture. BTW that catch at 3:40 Mark Waugh - nice reflexes to save his front teeth or a nasty bruise! He was consistently good wherever he got put.
I love Shane Warne, fave bowler when I was a kid. If the modern DRS system was in place back then, then I have a feeling that the c&b at 2:05 may have been overturned and declared not out cause looking at frame my frame I think it was one of those where it hits the ground the same moment he gets some of his fingers jammed partially underneath and the catcher is unaware. But anyway a great 12 for in the match!!🤩🤩🤩
The highlights don't show Warne's incredible ability to set his wicket up through consistent bowling & then using variation like the flipper or spinning the ball an extra inch
@@dt2419 Salim Malik seemed to do all right, certainly on Warne's first tour of Pakistan in 1994-95. Navjot Sidhu also did well at home. But in Australia, you're right. I don't remember anyone consistently playing him well.
@@sentimentalbloke185 He had only been in test cricket for a couple of years at this point, and was already no.1 The body can't perform at that level for too long, and he kept it going for 12 more years
@@laxeystu8096 The flipper puts unnatural strain on the shoulder but I think Warne recognized after his shoulder op that he didn't need to spin the ball sideways so much & he became a more subtle bowler. Bearing in mind he mostly didn't bowl the wrong un.
It just makes me appreciate more how good a players of spin sachin tendulkar and VVS laxman were. Both used to hit warne against the spin and completely dominate him.
Post Warne's retirement from International cricket , South Africa managed to win the series in Australia otherwise Blonde leg spinning wizards run overs the Proteas sides during his haydays
Cullinan is playing Warne like he would have an SA leggie ie thinking an off stump line would turn away from the stumps and thus he tried to play an expansive drive.. Similarly Jonty in the 1st innings is playing for a middle and off line a tradional leggie bowled instead of the middle and leg line..
He had many great outings but this has to be the most Shane warne performance in history, wrong un wrong un flipper slider flipper leggy top spinner wrong un 😂😂😂😂
South Africans were pathetic when it came to playing Warne. They made him look greater than he really was with their outlandish batting technique against him...
RIP Shane Warne. The greatest leg spinner of all time. I cannot imagine that he is no more.
