Whoever at Sky decided to put Atherton and Hussain on a podcast deserves a medal, the oracle of cricket podcasts these two
Absolute Gold
Sensational aren't they. I could listen to them for hours
Atherton is a cricket scholar. I love his commentary. Articulation in its purest form.
@@robertmason6366he was a very good batsman and captain....It's just reflected in his commentary....
@@robertmason6366I just love the depth of questions he always asks from the skipper of both sides when any test match or test series or even any huge ICC event ends...it just one of the best in cricketing world....
It's been clear, just from the expressions on their faces, how hard the loss of Thorpe has hit his former teammates. I lost my best friend, aged 45, three months ago and we grew up together watching Athers, Nas and Thorpe through the 90's and I find myself both shocked by the news, and without the one person who would have understood that feeling. It's a strange entwining of personal loss and public tragedy. The truth is that life, private or public, is fragile, precious and worth making the most of whilst we have it.
Well said m8
Are you a Brit sir?
Even as an Indian cricket fan, Loved watching Thorpe for his sheer determination and grit...of course talent was galore. RIP champ. One of the best English cricketers by far in that era. ❤
My early memories of eng cricket was Graham Thorpe with his white head band and hat.
Love from India...
Atherton looks like a mad scientist that has been spending hours on working out a solution
These two are a genuinely pleasurable watch..
Thorpey was a great player. Unbelievably sad and heartbreaking what happened to him. Will watch out for the tribute next test match. RIP
These two guys are legends. All class! RIP Thorpe.
thorpey passing is still a shock... condolences to all fans, former players and colleagues and family alike....
Love watching you two, intelligent, authentic discussion. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia
Come on, gents! You know they’re never off the books! Congratulations to you all, and you’ve been so good in the wake of Graham’s loss. We know how tough talking about him must have been but you’ve both done a wonderful player absolutely proud.
Thorpe made good runs in an era of great bowling attacks, Warne and McGrath, Walsh and Ambrose, Waquar and Wasim, Donald and Pollock, Kumble and Srinath, Muralitharan and Vass.. there was no let up in those days whoever you played against… RIP
Thorpe averaged over 50 when he came back in 2003. He was dropped for the 2005 ashes for Ian Bell. Awful decision because if thorp played it would of been a bigger margin of victory.
no, it was the correct decision
I’ve been waiting all week to here the two of you speak about Graham Thorpe, thanks for sharing. I was a teenager in the 90s in Surrey left-hand my favorite cricketer.
I can vividly remember the 46 innings.
I loved watching Thorpey back then. Such a brilliant Batsman. Huge respect may he RIP.
Great podcast once again !!! RIP Graham Thorpe.
Just want to say something about Graham Thorpe. I wished that he had some help when he was on tour in australia with the covid restrictions in 2021. I don't honestly know whether his family was there with him in australia but I felt the pressure of the job and then getting sacked for england hurt him so much especially with the night with the other cricketers in hobart. I think after that he never became the same person again 😢😢😢.
Best two cricket pundits bar non.
RIP Thorpey, loved him as a player and he always came across as a lovely guy - Thanks Nas and Athers for the lovely tribute to the legend.
The best podcast with these two legends. Great listening. RIP Thorpe
will watch the tribute to Graham Thorpe next week and enjoy the test as well
Only met Michael at Lord's on the 23rd July with Brian Lara. I remember taking a photo with both of them . Also Michael shook my hand afterwards as he was a true gentleman. I wished Graham Thorpe was there at Lord's that day 😢. This was less than 2 weeks before Graham died 😢😢.
Sorry for your loss Mike and Naser
A wonderful tribute to a great man. But, nobody should get to a stage where they feel they feel they should end their own life. Nobody should ever be allowed to get to this stage. Ever.
I hope the ECB can learn from Graham Thorpe case. There's alot pressure on these players and coaches with social media and media expecting results. I hope the ECB have a course on health and well-being for all staff in the future.
This includes Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum who have done a great job for english cricket. They need protection from the media.
A Great and respectful post of "thorpie"...respect to you both of a great informational post
I have been waiting for your podcast since last Monday, It's a kind of my routine for me to listen to you guys every week....
shamar Joseph is an absolute joy to watch bowl or bat. In the SA series just finished he is on his way to all rounder.
Two of the greats of the game. Love listening to them. Just unbelievable what happened to Graham Thorpe. So sad and shocking how he decided to end his life.
❤you Thorpey. Amazing player and the only player the great Australian side respected. One of the best batsmen at steering the tail. He averaged over 50 after his 2 years out and was ridiculously dropped.
Thorpe was the best at handling pressure in the middle for England in the 90’s. RIP, who would have thought what was happening to him. 😢
Although I was born here, all my family relationships are sri lankan including my wife. I really enjoy both Michael and Nasser talking about Sri Lanka cricket and how they enjoyed playing over there ❤
Congrats to the Dads!
Thorpe legends with hussain & atharton 🤙🏽
Thorpe was the guy that changed England cricket as a fast scorer an a polite person rip
I enjoy every single program about them bcas they are full of talent don’t miss any broadcast 👍
I have been through a clearing experience with my kid...unbelievable
Thorpe is the only cricketer to face 2 Brian Lara world records of 375 and 400 😢😢. Both Michael and Nasser would remember both. 😢
I loved the happy cricket memories. Lovely and correct.
Did either of you notice his illness or try to talk?
I only ask because everyone thinks I'm confident and insult me.
I'm only saying because I hide my mental illness and people don't believe it's a shame. We hide things and then hide the things we use to hide them. Like bottles when we hide behind alcohol.
I'm now saying everything and anything to create discussion but that's an act too.
Please talk more about feelings gents. In our own ways, not like ladies, because we do things differently and it takes so much more to say how we feel. It takes more for us to have these conversations. We can and we should. Speak to your mates and if they don't seem right, then they probably aren't. If they seem strangely happy then that's a classic sign. Any change.
Would have appreciated a bit of a deep dive into Sri Lanka's test squad
Looks like a failed Zoom audition for the next Bond villain 😀
SL Test batting line up is actually better than both England and WI.
Yeah... SL batting is so good that they lost the test series at home to Eng & Pak..... what kind of cricket are you watching exactly & what exactly is your cricketing IQ????😅😅😅
They were batting pretty well in those test matches as well...their captain dds is a great test player...they lost those 2 Pakistan test because of saud sakeel...look at their average....most of them are above 40 which is verry good@@amitm2692
Ridiculous.😅
Are you mad or what...just rubbish...I agree SL batting is much much better than that of WI...but than England...man then its evident you don't follow most of England's recent test resurgence under Baz and Stokes...even without Stokes...there batting line consist Ben Ducket , Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook...and new batsman keeper Jamie Fox...are u kidding...its better than SL...so first try to get rid of Root in this series...than u'll understand in front of the best test batsman going around the world you guys are bowling...I just hope it's not 3-0 in favour of England...let's see...if Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson and Shoiab Bashir performs similarly what they did previously than SL has no chance...the scoreline will again read 3-0...in favour of England....
Chamari is playing the odi series against ireland
"All the work he put in", to balls it all up playing in the Mickey Mouse Hundred.
RIP Thorpey. Englsnd cricket fans loved you more than you will ever know.
Saying that Ben Stokes is irreplaceable is only true because the ECB is unwilling to select their only other international pace bowling All-Rounder.
The hundred is the best thing that’s ever happened to women’s cricket
Jordan cox played in the lanka premier league itself so he knows what the sri lankans have to offer
Interesting
Sad loss 😢
Got that result wrong Nas!
Christ Nas feels it
Smith is very KP
Remember watching the ashes when England won
Have I missed something here?
Why is Bairstow dropped out of favour?
spare a thought for the train driver eh lads
Jumping in front of a train is a brutal way to go. I wish he would have gotten more help after his first attempt. Sad 😭
How do you know he didn't get help?
Not every illness can be cured.
@@plym1969for sure. While it’s good that mental health is more ‘talked about’ and so on, I wish people wouldn’t just assume it’s as simple as ‘getting help’
@@HkFinn83True. The help available is often woefully inadequate. There are variations in the quality of help, too. While individual circumstances vary it is broadly the case that mental health issues are far worse in unequal societies. This is not a comment on the tragedy of Graham Thorpe. I read that different types of help did not work for him; sometimes nothing is enough and that is a sad reality. The rich can doubtless afford expensive private treatment but even then it may not work. The majority are unlikely to receive sufficient help from the NHS.
They expect Sri lanka to play better, but they invite them once a decade 😅
I thought Thorpe was the most elegant batsman to come out of England, at least for the part I saw as a viewer.
Thorpe was a grafter. And a great batsman for England. But elegant, no. Have you never watched Colin Cowdrey, Ted Dexter, Tom Graveney, and David Gower, To name just a few.
I agree Thorpy was the most elegant as well as most effective test batsman of England in 90's...
Stokes is not irreplaceable. He is the most replaceable player. Horrible cricketer. Most important part of a player is missing in him, no matter how talented you are if you can't play regularly you are a horrible player
graham Thorpe suicide reveals how male depression is still not taken seriously in our society. We always expect to be strong.tbh most suicides in world due to depression is of male
True. I always get the impression that we talk about talking about it, and little else.
Those who have great support systems in place anyway, or can afford proper help often prescribe to this opinion, without realising it's those other things that allow a good outcome from talking, rather than simply the talking itself. It usually ends disastrously for most, as it's interpreted as weakness and a further weapon to use, and things are far worse than they were before.
There's an interesting parallel between human behaviour and what Robert Sapolsky found in his study of baboons. When sedating them with a dart gun for study, he found that when a female was hit, all the females and young went wild and attacked him. When a male was hit, no one appeared to care, apart from the males lower down the pecking order who would try to kill the sedated male while they had the chance.
It's not personal, it's just how it is.
Come on guys! You need to address both the manner of his death and the reasons behind it. This is an issue that transcends sport and affects all of us, either directly or indirectly.
No they don't.
Admired Thorpe as a player but he was extremely selfish to take the train driver down with him.
Yes it's terrible for the train driver. But selfish? In 2024 we're still calling suicide selfish? Unbelievable 😮
He wasn't himself, so just be careful when saying these things. We just don't know what thoughts were in his mind with pressure from media and job.
He was on medication to try and sort his life out but it's very upsetting for the family.
Cringe take, something a vicar from 1950 would say
Your name is Douglas😂
Pope is hardly worth his place in the side, certainly not at number 3. Never mind being captain.
He's just the chosen one that's all.
The hundred is shite.
I enjoyed thorpe's batting however, No mention whatsoever for the poor train driver whom has to live with the trauma affecting both driver & thier family. No sympathy for thorpe from me!
So why leave a comment on this podcast. Emptyheaded idiot.
I really feel sorry for anyone that knows you. To have such little emotional intelligence and understanding of depression in 2024 shows a real lack of curiosity and wanting to be a better person.
Let's hope no one needs to turn to you for help and advice.
Robert you are a sad man. You sound seriously unhappy. Hope you can get help with your issues.
Lots of talk about womens cricket, but it really isn't a good watch .. better down the local pitch on a sunday .. why is it being pushed so hard?
Its ok for these so called mates speaking up now but where where they in the last 2 years when Graham needed his mates.
Harsh that lad, you don’t know what’s gone on
Shut up Ian you sad kent
