LITTLE UPDATE: My friend Jeppe had been tracking down why his cruise control hasn’t been working and it’s because at around 28 minutes into the video I explain how you need to wire into pin 20 on the connector that is the second one from the left but it is in fact the connector that is the second one from the right. Although messing this up won’t compromise the driveability of the car, it will make it so your CC doesn’t work. So if cruise control is important to you, be sure to fix this mistake I made in the video! Thank you and thanks to Jeppe for figuring it out!
@@jinendow under $2000, what exactly do I need then? I’m currently in the middle of loading up the carts with parts to do so... but I’m in the talks with someone that’s trying to sell me his 6 speed tranny the driveshaft a clutch/flywheel and the pedal assembly for 2k
Good job on the video, decent coverage of the steps. Regarding the trany, since you had it all out, did you replace any of the compression springs? Did you install the locking pin and thrust pin? also noticed no ID switch, any issues with that? Im just trying to get all the parts I need in my basket as we speak... will be doing all the seals (inner and outer) as well since its out.
I did not replace any of the springs unless that is covered under Lang's Bellhousing machine service. And the ID switch isn't really necessary if you get the proper coding done afterwards. Good luck!
Did you notice any power decrease after the swap prior to getting coded? Just finished up my swap and had a local euro shop code it , no more dash cog but still getting a CEL for smg. Car also feels about 200hp until 4k rpm
before I got it coded I could definitely tell the power was off. the revs in between gears would drop aggressively and it felt as if it was in some limp mode. after I got the car coded by ecuworx it felt the same as before the swap though (as in perfect)
Best thing you can do to ANY car IMO. Doesn't matter if it's an E46 or a freakin econo box like a Neon. Three pedals or nothing is my motto. Makes it so much more fun to drive, and obviously you have a lot more control over the vehicle. The SMG sucks ass compared to the later DCT trans' anyways so regardless it's the better move. The DCT is WORLDS BETTER if your into auto trans.' SMG's are always so 'clunky' shift really rough, especially at lower RPM. Makes anyone look like a noob when you're driving. S54's are so awesome that having that crappy SMG bolted to it is really a buzzkill. I'm a VW/ Audi and BMW tech that's been turning wrenches on these and pretty much anything with an engine for a little more than 25 years. The amount of SMG failures I've seen alone also makes this swap mandatory IMO. Like a completely different car with the manual. Good video. Thanks for sharing man. 👍
@@jinendow definitely man! I've swapped to manual trannies on a good amount of all kinds of stuff over the years, and I've never had a customer or a friend that I've done the job for that's been disappointed whatsoever.
Thanks for the video. How did you get the transmission out at that height (your car looks like it isn’t this high, 50skid posted a video where he says it needs to be at least 24 inches clearance from the floor to the lowest point of the car)
it’s been a while but I believe i lowered it on a trans jack and then placed the trans on a piece of cardboard while it was still under the car. then slid it out from there
Awesome walkthrough man, I'm also doing a SMG to manual swap on jack stands and I got 2 questions. 1. I have an EWS delete so my EWS module isn't plugged in. Will that cause issues with the one pin that goes into the EWS plug? 2.I also have a Buildjournal tune, I know on they offer re-tuning and they have an option for "I am now SMG". Is that all thats needed to clear the smg cog? or is more tuning needed? Thanks

Great vid, I might have missed it but how did you mount the bracket for the shifter under the tans tunnel? Ive seen some weld it, some used rivets, how did you do yours? Not sure what its called. Thanks.
I actually did not install the bracket! since the rtd did not require it I opted not to install it for time sake. down the line if I opt for a stock style shifter, I will have to install one
Great video. Quick question, why did you choose to modify the bell housing with the RTD Shifter? Can’t you install that shifter with the RTD and avoid bell housing modification?
thank you, yes you can use this shifter and not modify the bellhousing. I just read a lot of differing opinions on the forums and saw that some guys didn’t really like the shifter feel when the bellhousing wasn’t modified. I just thought I should play it safe
Hey Jin. where you able to source clutch switch #613 or you just stuck with #354? I actually ordered 1 supposedly the #613 but received #354. I want to know if you are still using #354 and what are the issues you have using the #354? I also plan on using ECUWORX for coding part of it. Thanks a lot for your time.
Hey, I was lookin at an M3 at the time but plans fell off, and I’m doing the same again. Have you heart about the swap with the self centering shifters? Manual bell housing and stuff are so darn expensive now
I've got a 1999 328i that had a 5l40e five speed auto. I installed a six speed manual from an 05 z4. I'm getting an S indicator where the gear indicator is. I've wired the dme and the ews still won't turn...
Every time I’ve removed the intake manifold off a S54 it loves to act funny for a bit ( cold start wise ) I’ll double check all my connections and yet it will still give odd starting conditions
I did the swap, but fuse number 3 under the hood is blowing. Its a 20amp fuse and i used a multimeter and saw that the brake light switch is connected to this fuse. Did you have any fuse blowing?
