Ed was good, but in my opinion he was very boring. Ant makes everything more interesting
Really glad to see these videos are focusing on the repairs, and both Ant and Edd do a great job of describing and explaining the process. Ant is great, but sometimes Edd goes a little further - for instance explaining how to use a special spot weld drill bit, whereas Ant just drills away. That said, Ant knows his stuff. Would love to see more Edd - talented and creative guy and would love to hear more from him. Thanks WD.

The oil Ant was draining looked pretty clean to me!
Exactly my thoughts. Maybe he is doing something to the bottom end so the oil needs to be drained.
Fred Mertz looks like transmission fluid not engine oil.

Hi Ant. One thing I’m sure you appreciate but is an unknown to viewers is drive trains are often dynamically balanced. Anyone removing driveshafts and perhaps even half shafts should routinely mark the position of the shafts so they can be placed into exactly the same position they were before.! That’s all. So psyched that both of my cars have been featured in Wheeler Dealers - my 1995 Volvo 850 T-5R and my E46 M3!
You guys missed the requirement to either a) machine the bell-housing to accept the shift return springs b) get a manual bell-housing which includes the shift return springs or c) swap to a self centering shifter. This car will work however your shifter will flop around like a wet noodle. I've done this swap and the hardest part is the programming the KOMBI ( Cluster module) and re-flashing the ECU.
Excellent modification, only an expert can do it right!
Ugh, I haven't watched Wheeler Dealers since the Edd days but this feels almost unrecognizably americanized for all the worse. I miss Edd and his thorough explanations :(

While I do agree Ed was god I have to admit that Ant is a very good substitute! He is doing a great job!

First newer Wheeler Dealer clip I’ve seen, this was great!
Whilst I still watch the show, the current series of "Wheeler Dealers" without Edd China isn't anywhere near as good. Edd demonstrated more detailed technical and practical "hands on" content. Which many viewers enjoyed. Ant is a decent mechanic but he just skims over technical details of how to fix/replace something. I miss Edd's orange gloves too..😉👍
I used to love watching The old Wheeler dealer's with Edd... unfortunately it's gone down hill.. and why based in USA,?? Carnt stand it. The other series we with the F1 mechanic is also pants. Bring BK The old style with Edd and proper show than the this rubbish USA based.

It would not be Ant's fault - what you are describing is up to the producers. What has happened to this show is what happens to most good shows once the greedy execs get their fking paws into an already good show, hoping to squeeze out even more money, which is they totally ruin it. The show was far more interesting when it was in Britain and they were working on mostly European classics and Ed explained what he was doing. I just watched the frame swap they did on a Morgan yesterday and that was SO much more interesting than this BS show where they switch over an automatic M5 to a manual in 5 minutes. Braaaaack... switching the channel to something more interesting.

That gearbox looked brand new no dirt or grime anywhere, even if it was cleaned it wouldn’t come up that good

Not really. My e46 has the stock gear and its as clean as that one. There is a cover undrneat the car that spans the gearbox. Guess it depends where you drive the car
just look up Braymond141 on IG. He would have got that looking better then new.
Just use commercial grade degreaser, there is concentrated stuff that diluted 1:25 for normal use. But if you use it 1:10 or neat, wear heavy rubber gauntlets and eye protection, because it’ll get every spec of dirt and grease off the work piece.

You guys are crazy the pump only cost 450 reconditioned and the smog is faster off the line but still love your show

Yea you use the box from e90/91 330d six speed manual, same box as used in the north American only E60 M5...

I love the fact that for years manufacturers have tried to push consumers into paying for expensive automated gearboxes which have devalued their cars faster. Every car buyers guide should warn consumers to go for manual. 😂

Crazy not to do rear main crank seal and clutch disk , pilot bearing, pivot bushing, etc while you have it apart, even if it looks good. Car is old.

I like Edd but disagree with some of these comments. Ant is the man and regularly astounds me at his ability to share his knowledge and teach an audience. He is more charismatic than Edd. I get it...when you get used to a certain chemistry on a show you love you dont want it to change but keep Ant please he is awesome!
Most of these critics to Ant come from people that watched only this and not full episodes. Also, if they knew anything about mechanics, they'd know that now WD takes some easy reparations for granted, as they are effectively easy, or it's known how to do them.

This episode really pissed me off, you didn´t even let Ant finish the car ! =( You were so in a hurry to piss around. Repairing the car is the most interesting thing about Wheeler dealers, if it´s *really necessary* to piss around then make longer episodes.

Ant turned Edd's role into 3 separate shows, one of them being 'Master Mechanic', where the entire season is focused on Ant building One car.
Whats the realistic cost for all this. With and without labor in case you did yourself.

How's with a manual are completely natural. The only reason I bought my E46 convertible was because it's a 5 speed.

For a car guy and a great mechanic ( HE proved this with his Alpha 158 build ) he really did go sideways with his brain cells and jumped in to the Boy Racer Fck a Car Club........ The most sought after E46 M3 is the CSL AND you can't buy one with a manual...WHY ?..... The reason being is that the SMG is the best / fastest system for the E46 M3......
Manual cars are like vynils : it’s becoming more expensive for being cumbersome and « pure »....but I still prefer them

Hilarious. No mention of fitting the electrics, coding the DME, etc. The bellhousing also needs modified or swapped with a genuine manual to accept the return springs. The gearstick also won't centre itself in its' current form. Making this kind of job look easy when in reality it is a very labour intensive job. To be fair, the guy did mention this halfway through the vid but the overall impression came across as this job being a simple one. I suppose it is for a tv show with enough resources to provide all the tools that the average joe doesn't have the room for or can't afford. It's also easy to spot a converted SMG too, the instrument cluster has a different layout for a start. And a 30% increase in value? Bollocks. People aren't daft and would just pay for a genuine 6MT instead of paying the same for a converted one so at best the value increase should be around half that.

many issues here. You forgot to add the detentes inside the gearbox that keep it in gear. Also forgot to rust protect the spot welds you drilled out. Padle shits still in place look all wrong.

Ant skips over aligning the transmission with the clutch pressure plate (total pain in the ass), properly bleeding the clutch hydraulic line (not an easy task) , installing the manual shifter and a whole lot more. Nice 7 minute SMG to 6 speed conversion - NOT.
Christina (El Moussa) Anstead - Ant's hot wife has the same format on her home fix up show: Flip or Flop. Magically a new structural support beam is installed in the main living area. No mention that it took a crew of 4 guys 2 days to do the work and cost $8000.

so... that wasn't an automatic gearbox, but a regular manual gear with clutch operated electronically, is that?
It's an automised manual gearbox, using a normal gearbox but putting hydraulics to change gear and operate the clutch, to make it act as an automatic.
Rather than the completely different design automatic cars have with the fluid clutch and stuff
That’s the proper way! But if you put “CAE shifter” in, it’s gonna be easier.

Boba Fett parts wise you’ll need a few things, CAE shifter, clutch pedal assembly, slave cylinder, some misc n stuffs correct me if I’m wrong. Also reprogram it afterward.

I preferred it with Edd. Don't know why but it was just better. Hardly watched since he left. But!! I did watch trading up and now Elvis has taken over, i will be back!!
Is an E46 M3 really worth 30% more as a manual, especially in America?
Yes, with almost any performance car a manual will be worth more than an Auto/SMG/DSG etc. The rarer manuals get the greater the premium commanded as well. 🤷🏻♂️
It appears so however i am confused after all the SMG is a better / faster system so fck knows why... BMW F1 Team Engineers can't of been wrong when then designed the M3 CSL....
I really wonder how many viewers of this show watch it to see Mike, and how many watch it because of Ant or Ed...
