intending to write my memoir I found these films. Wonderful work. i lived in Rutherglen and could see the glow of the Clydebank fires from our back door. I am a war bride, living in B.C. Canada. Worked in history after attending university here.
In a recent tv program about the Clydebank blitz it was said there were no survivors from the building that the Rocks lived in on Jellicoe street, my great uncle, John Jardine, lived upstairs on the 2nd floor from the Rocks family. He had gone home to collect some belongings, stopping to talk with the rocks in the close, and was at home when the bomb hit. An upturned bath landed on him breaking his back but saving him in the collapsing building. He survived and fully recovered.
I've never ever seen this documentary before. My father served on the ORP Piorun and was an the Anti Aircarft Guns (Pom Poms as he called them) Thank you Iain McGuinness
Kudos to Iain McGuinness for making this documentary. Like McGuinness, I attended Kilbowie Primary and Clydebank High and didn't get taught anything relating to the Clydebank Blitz! (I'm 51 now.) I'd only heard older people make superficial references to it. Thanks for bringing this out in the open and in such great detail while the survivors are still around to tell it like it was! It is an excellent documentary.
greytscot My father Daniel Hunter, was 15 at the time of the blitz. He never talked about it. He lost cousins who did not make it out of their house before a bomb hit, and his family's house was destroyed. If it wasn't for the anniversary films, I would not have known how had it was.
