My sister, a director of photography, says the single most important factor of going to film school is networking and creating connections. According to her, every single job and gig she's ever participated in she got thanks to someone who vouched for her previous work, or just someone she knew. So my guess is that unless you're a top 1% persuader/salesperson/lobbyist, or have tons of contacts already, you'll be probably better off going to film school.

From my experience, film school is best for finding like-minded people and networking with teachers that are active in the industry. You'd likely learn class topics just as fast by actually being on-set, but the people you meet at film school are the ones who get you there in the first place. I've had the opportunity to meet and work with some amazing people that I may never have if I didn't attend film school. Something else I've found is that most of the films you make for assignments will be pretty bad - they're held back by the underachievers in the class most often. The best stuff you'll make in those years are the films you create outside of school hours with the classmates you work with the best.

Side point: Going to film school doesn't necessarily mean you have to work in the film industry. The skills apply to a wide variety of media jobs. I got a film degree, am not in the industry, and use that degree every day. Be mindful of debt, but higher education means access to resources and a network of people with like interests and goals. And don't think you have to go to one of the major schools in this video. I went to Bowling Green State University in Ohio and I have classmates that currently working in the industry.

I think the less-expensive schools, like state universities or community colleges, teach the skills just as well at a fraction of the cost. So much of film making relies on actual talent. The technical stuff was figured out long ago, CGI notwithstanding.

From a purely pragmatic perspective, having a degree in ANYTHING already makes you a little bit more attractive to potential employers. Obviously, you need to factor in the cost of getting a degree versus the opportunities it opens up for you and which of those opportunities you want to, or realistically can, take. A surprisingly large number of people take a degree in one field, then start working in a different field with the plan "I just need to get enough experience so I can move on to the field I really want", then find themselves actually loving the industry or area they ended up in, and can still apply a lot of the skills they learned during their degree.
Remember: a degree teaches you a lot about a specific area, but it also teaches you how to think, how to prioritize, it helps you understand your limits and options, and how to apply yourself to a variety of situations. Don't be afraid to move outside of a narrow comfort zone if you think you're up for it!

The timing for this video is crazy accurate for me right now.
This week I dropped out of Software Engineering to eventually go study Film Production at UQAM next fall. Which is the same week Denis Villeneuve received his honorary master degree from UQAM (he studied there). During his speech he said that the day he quitted his science degree to go study Film was the day life became beautiful.

If I was you I would study software engineering and make little movies at the same time, learning on the job kinda. Why would I stay on the software engineering course? Because nowadays a good chunk of the filmmaking pipeline relies on software, so I reckon having a good knowledge of that would give a filmmaker the tools to really be able to truly control his images and not being "held hostage" by companies like Adobe, Autodesk etc. Check out steve yedlin and his resolution demo. It blew my mind! :D

    Series idea
    “HOW TO ADULT”
A series where you explain to us recent high school graduates how to file taxes,
Get a job, figure out what we want in life, find a job, manage bank accounts, avoid scams (beyond the obvious Nigerian prince), and find jobs!
Even stuff like how to make easy repairs to the car or fix small stuff without paying a professional will be super helpful to us
There are so many things that adults can do but no one has ever taught us high schoolers because adults take it for obvious and you can be sure that we won’t ask them
Some schools have classes that are supposed to do that but not all schools do and the those that do have the classes are usually worthless beyond “don’t fall to peer pressure kids” or “you don’t have to smoke to be cool” and “sex can wait”
While telling us that we should believe in ourselves is nice for your self confidence. It’s not very helpful when I have a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. And no cellular reception.
( I can have all the stuff I need to replace the tire, but I won’t manage to do it in a million years)
Please give us a series that explains how to be an adult
    Thank you

Film school is extremely expensive but as a current film student I feel like I learned a lot from film school and it gave me the opportunity to work in every field to figure out what I like and what I don't like. In classes like "industry professionalism" I had to interview people in the industry and that helped me create a lot of connections in the field I want to pursue (editing) and on top of all that I created connection with my own peers and they will also soon be in the film industry.
It is hard work and I barely get sleep, we have thousands of projects and workshops on top os 5-6 classes, but I know I made the right decision going to film school.

I moved to the US recently to pursue a film career. My initial plan was to get a job that had ridiculous hours that would give me 3-4 days a week to fund and focus on my shorts that I would submit to film festivals. Then over the years I would eventually gain enough awards, probably made friends in the industry and done networking and stuff and eventually maybe get an opportunity to work in Hollywood. After I arrived I got a job that gave me the free time I needed, but then actually finding people to make films with proved to be impossible as people had their own lives to attend to and noone's schedule would ever match up. So now I am considering going to film school because then I would be placed in an environment with likeminded people that have the time, skills and motivation to make films. Then I came up with another plan, I could move to LA, the holy city of filmmaking and try to do the same approach with gaining reputation and a network, only problem is that LA is expensive to live in...

thank you for making this video. I’m a freshman right now and I’ve always been interested in engineering but after I shadowed an electrical engineer and seeing everything they do everyday it just seems so boring and I’d never want to do that as my career. I want to do something creative and not some cookie cutter type job. I spent hours on hours editing and working on a documentary for this national history day competition and over that time I realized how much I actually love editing and doing gfx. I never really considered doing film because I always thought it was just this extremely exclusive field but after seeing this video explaining he structure of film school I think that’s really what I want to do.

My network in connecting with Key PA's have really payed off. I usually find out what TV/Movie productions are shooting in the NYC area. I usually take trips out to these film sets and ask crew members if the Key PA is around, so I can talk to them about getting work. If you live in either NY or LA I recommend using this method. You can of course learn everthing that has to do with filmmaking by yourself but i think you become better quicker if you want to do a technical job like cinematographer/editor/light/sound by going to filmschool.
But if you got something uniqe in you when it comes to writing and directing i think it´s a bad idea to go to filmschool and be moulded in to the sort of directors/writers they "make" at that school and it cost alot of money.
Better to just write, write, write a bunch of scripts and like Quentin Tarantino start making a movie, he did his first unrealesed film "My best friends birthday" over a couple of years and when it was done he said it was bad in the beginning but the last things they filmed where pretty good and he sees it as his filmschool and made him ready to do his first "real" movie Reservoir Dogs.
Filmschools kills individuality and peoples uniqe-voices even before they get the chance to find them in my opinion.
Of course there are people that did go to filmschool and are great filmmakers with there own style and vice versa but overall this is what i belive in.

Fin Jackson basically you take a visual element you can produce (color, tone, shapes, etc.), then you assign a meaning to that motif, then whenever you want to have that “meaning” in a scene you use that motif.
For instance you can say RED represents DANGER, and whenever a character is going to be in a dangerous situation you add in the color red to the sets, props, costumes, etc.

It’s interesting to note that Steven Spielberg never went to film school either, as he was initially rejected from attending USC (his dream school @ the time) He then ended up attending CSULB (Cal State Long Beach) and took photography classes before getting hired by Universal to direct an episode of Rod Serling’s old “Night Gallery” series from the 60s, later followed by a 1971 made-for-TV movie called “DUEL” 😈 And the rest, as they say, was history… 👍👌😎

I'm a junior in high school and i personally am interested in the legal field. But I'm not the biggest fan of reading and my parents told me to look at an alternative to that.
I e considered the film making industry because i like the history of film production, how movie cameras work, famous movie fun facts, etc.
I'm also decent at animating and I'm currently in the process of creating an "analogue horror" (a type of horror genre that uses vintage VHS videos, eerie music, and uncanny voices all put together). series. I'm currently learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve for this. I'm pretty proud of my work and happy that I'm doing something creative instead of an uncreative activity.
Anyway, without my blabber lol do you guys think that i might find film making interesting or enjoy it with the current things I'm working on? Thanks so much and have a terrific day!

You guys need a crash course careers doing something completely like this for every single career. My Brother is getting into film school and I just sent this to him. If I had half the information you mentioned for any career I was interested in, my life would be very different. Sadly my career counselors were all useless and straight up lied to me as to how much I would make after college..

I'm in Film School right now and my feelings on it are mixed. I have the luxury of living in California and being able to just head to LA whenever I want but I still decided to go to school for film. If I play my cards right in Spring in Summer I'll only have to pay $ 1000 back to my school which is great.
Tbh, Evaluate your situation and what you exactly want to do with your career. I'd suggest Community College because 1) it's cheaper and 2) My old CC (Im at Uni now), taught me a lot more and I wish I didn't transfer....though I have a emphasis in Criticism and not Production as I planned beforehand
If anyone has questions, I'd love to answer as best I can

Etsu Ikeda I really want to get into making videos such as directing or screen writing what other path is there to go besides going to film school?

    • @HedonLionist
      @HedonLionist 7 років тому +2

For screenwriting specifically, I highly recommend reading as many scripts a day as you possibly can. From acclaimed movies and shows to terrible ones, you have to understand what goes into making a script functional as it is the movie. So reading scripts is important and watch a ton of movies (something you would have to do in or out of film school.)
Another way to become knowledgeable about the trade is to look into books on screenwriting and directing. Many fine books will give you what you need to understand about those professions. There may be things you already know but it's always good to play around with what you know to create your voice.
To get into the industry as a writer or director (or both) is obviously the tricky part. You can do a wide number of things to get started. Seeing as you're interested in making videos though, I'd suggest you look into coming up with ideas for short movies and produce them. As you're making your videos and learning through each step (Pre-production/Production/Post), you can gain some practical knowledge of filming (assuming you have the resources to take this route).
Doing this, you should look into people around your area or colleges who are into acting and production and start making those connections. You'll learn so much from people around you.
And never be discouraged from whatever path you chose,. In this industry, You're always learning...whether you want to or not
*look up Celtx for screenwriting, sorry if I couldn't give you much info for directors, I have more of a writing background

currently in my last year of film school in chicago and this video is giving me an anxiety attack. But my weigh in from my experience is that paying for film school is essentially paying to use professional equipment and have access to professionals who can teach you things. and what I mean by that is people around you are making things and *some* of the teachers know what they're talking about and if you ask they'll help you prepare or get set experience.
What film school hasn't done in my experience is teach me things about making movies in the classes. It's all on the student sets, which are separate from the classes themselves. But also I go to a primarily below the line school.
