Hi have a question if you don't mind . We are going to be driving from IL to Myrtle Beach. Is there another way to get there beside taking this road through the mountains? Flying is not an option either. After watching this video looks Amazing but to many turns and twist for my liking. Is this road scarey then the Needles Highway in SD? Thank you 😊
I stood there when I was a little boy. I'm 38 and now have panic disorder, and with my particular triggers, I'll never be able to see it again in person. Thank you for this video.
Not quite, but as i said in the video. If you're a local and accustomed to it, its no problem. Driving it while snow covered is a whole different experience on a dry sunny day.
@@JPVideos81 I have been on that mountain in all kinds of weather. The hills in PA is almost like driving on flat land. Very nice rolling hills, but not mountains.
I'm a proud Tennesseean & the Smokies are a treasure. I feel blessed to live my life in one of the most beautiful places on earth rich in history & culture! Love your videos, thanks for sharing your travels with us JP!
I absolutely Love the Mountains! The WV turnpike has some really scary turns and tunnels. The lower part of the turnpike going into Va. The mountains are absolutely gorgeous there also. Thanks for sharing this...I Love the mountains!!
"You guys ready for this?" And I wasn't. We've got no shortage of natural beauty here in CA but that awesome mountain range full of every shade of green just took my breath away.
I love driving roads like that, very soothing. My favorites are driving the roads from Banner Elk NC to Blowing Rock NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway to Little Switzerland. Occupies my mind and is zenlike.
Smokey Mountains are the best I went 3 times already can’t wait to summer but gonna have to wait a couple of months. I think I have drove by that road before to go to a lake those views are soooo beautiful
The Smokies are my happy place. Thankfully we live in Tennessee and get to visit all the time. One year on our way to Cherokee, NC, we drove it in fog. Now that was scary!
I left Gatlinburg one day in late November driving over to Cherokee, NC in my BMW Roadster. It was 50 degrees and sunshine in Gatlinburg. Somewhere around 3500 ft. altitude we started seeing snow on the ground. We rounded a curve at about 4500 ft. altitude and snow and ice was covering the road. At 5000 ft. it was a white out, the road was impassable and my traction control was going crazy! I turned and came back down to Gatlinburg. When we got just about to the Welcome Center there was a Ranger closing the road!!
I lived in Tennessee for 4 years. Moved there from Florida. Drove those mountains around Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville every day. Nothing scary about it to me. The scariest thing was trying to drive through that traffic during the rod run.
I drove it once many years ago pulling a carnival ride. Went over a bump in the road and lost the small trailer. Had to rehitch it and turn around and go back. I'll never do it again. To scary in the dark.
I've always felt so blessed that this southern girl was raised around those beautiful smoky mountains 🤠.... And yes if you're not use to driving in this area, the roads can be a real butt clincher at times!!! 😁 Thank you for the beautiful video and thank you for loving my homes true beauty. ❤
First it's a scenic route, that means people drive it a little slower so they can enjoy it. Second, there's absolutely nothing terrifying about it if driven at a safe speed. If on the other hand, you chose to drive at a high rate of speed and complain that the other drivers are not getting out of your way fast enough, it's you providing the terror not the road! It's the equivalent of saying rollerblading is a terrifying sport because you chose to rollerblade backwards and blindfolded.
Love this drive. Another drive that has amazing views is the Foothills Parkway. The Tail of the Dragon is more winding, sharp curves, very popular with motorcycles and sports cars. I think the Dragon has over 300 curves in 11 miles.
Beautiful!! I've been lucky enough to have driven through there, on dry roads and daytime, it really is breathtaking, another beautiful video, ty JP, stay safe, ❤🇺🇸
Beautiful views. My dad used to take us there when we were real little. We'd leave Friday and drive all night and wake up with the sun coming up over the mountains and the tops completely cover with clouds. It was like looking down into a sea of clouds. So beautiful. He would always drive as far up Clingmans Dome as far as he could and park just for that view.
I think I was on that road just a few months ago in April, wanted to go to Clingmans Dome on our way out of Gatlinburg (heading back to TX). The weather didn't cooperate. What was a drizzly day in Gatlinburg, was a gale force, raining sideways, socked in with clouds day at the top. I could barely see two car lengths ahead. I stopped at the peak, but the weather was showing no signs of clearing, so I pressed on to get down out of the weather. With that behind us, the rest of the road was epic and beautiful.
I don't know how many times I have been in the Smokies. We went there when I was a kid in the 50s and 60s. Still go there every several years. Absolutely love it. Been over this road many times. Never tire of it. Have seen bears and elk along this road. Such beautiful scenery!
You are in beautiful country. I use to live near there and I miss it. A lot of stops for overlooks. There are natural springs through that drive that many people stop and fill up a few gallon jugs. Living water. I have driven the Blue Ridge Mts in Virginia and I was in the clouds. Gods country.
Beautiful work, though I'd like to say that the view is even better when there has been rain / fog in the area. I'll never forget travelling through there as a kid in the 1980's, and there would be fog. You wouldn't be able to see very far and that intensified everything. BTW anyone else remember the Cherokee Indian reservation / attraction that was in that area in the 1980's? Are they still there?
My ex was a long haul trucker, I got to go with him to SC. Jay, ever see the runaway ramps in the smokies. If a big rig loses its brakes, they have those ramps so they can slow the 18wheelers down. The ramps are rubble and deep sand. Great vid
Again, awesome video. We lived there for 21 years and drove that road all the time. Newfound Gap (where you were) is absolutely beautiful. Not far down the road is Clingmans Dome, which is even higher. Clingmans Dome has a walkway that takes you to an observation tower where you can see North Carolina and Tenn. We lived 1 mile from Fontana Lake, and you can se it from Clingmans Dome also. So happy to se you filming here. Thank you so much. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
You're lucky to be there, 30 plus years ago my future x wife and I road from Hellinois to Myrtle Beach, riding through the smokies on the parkway, and up to Clingmans Dome was memorable to say the least, it's hard to "sight see" 2 up on a big Harley but seeing this video brings me back in my mind, now if I could only get back there in person. Someday
After driving the mountain roads in Tiawan, where people constantly pass over the double yellow lines, even buses and the tunnels and bridges that only one car at a time can fit through, that looks easy!
JP beautiful road ,and views .Thank you for sharing . Their are great documentary about the challenges ,and construction of that beautiful highway a awesome watch .
I loved to go for that drive, you are a terrific driver. Wonderful video and thank you for the drive. XO I forgot to tell you at 9:40 you can see the clouds move on live shot. Great photography. Keep safe sweetheart.
It's best viewed in a convertible...My first trip up a little scary too but been across another half dozen times,...you get used to the road yet the beauty here never wears out. Thanks for uploading and sharing!
Undoubtedly Tennessee is one of the most beautiful places on the Earth but I had a nightmare experience on those roads up there someday I might tell people about it but it is a beautiful view
Those runaway ramps are designed to save semis that run away down the mountains. There nothing to worry about if anything they keep you a little bit safer
Wow!! That is a hard scary drive on a clear day time drive let alone at night and the winter would be really dangerous. I'll continue to keep you in my prayers. Stay safe my friend and thank you so much for taking us along. If some of the coins I found can sell well I can join your Paytron. BIG 🖒s UP !!
Wow every thing is SO GREEN! I missed all of that greenery and used to drive those kinds of roads many many years ago and never ever gave it much of a thought.
I am a Texan and I love Texas. However, I am dying to move to Tennessee. I have been looking at cabins in the mountains. My heart just keeps pulling that way. So beautiful.
That road is similar a lot of our roads here in Washington state. I reminds me of driving through Mt.Rainier National Park. I love a good windy back road to whip around the corners ! lol !
What beautiful scenery, I've been there many times in my younger days. Met Clu Gulager in Bryson City when he was performing at Maggie Valley. Clingman's Dome is also a beautiful lookout. Enjoy your trip, be safe.

I'm from Michigan. I'm not used to windy, cliff hanging roads.

I can imagine
Fog is the worst. Maybe ice is the worst. Not sure, maybe a whiteout. Watch the weather before you travel.
Beautiful scenery, thanks for taking us along for the ride. We live in a beautiful country- Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Same to you
I'm in Tennessee right now fir vacation! And were staying near/in the smoky mountain region!
Awesome

Sounds like my first encounter back in February.
My sister and I traveled that road this summer and did not find it terrifying. Beautiful views.

Where do you live now? I'm always interested in hearing where people have come from and where they've gone.
In our time, the middle of the last century, this was the only road from NC to TN. Loved the drive. Those mountains are dark, deep and truly wild.
Wow! Around that first curve I was starting to get dizzy. Wonderful video.
Haha, thanks
Driving in Atlanta is much scarier than this but I enjoyed the scenery. Very beautiful. Thanks.
Agree going back up over the Appalachians was scarier for me
Atlanta is a different kinda scary lol
Such an amazing video. The beauty is literally as you said, breathtaking!
I drove it once many years ago pulling a carnival ride. Went over a bump in the road and lost the small trailer. Had to rehitch it and turn around and go back. I'll never do it again. To scary in the dark.

In February it was snow covered at night time as i mentioned in the video.

That might be what I'm remembering from my drives with my family up there in the 1980's. I've always been terrified of heights :)
That place is so untouched and beautiful thanks for the video 💞🌹👍
In Townsend park they still had some of the old cabins. Really awesome to see, watch out for the bears.
The drive down the mountain from Estes Park in CO petrified me. It is 100 times worse than this one.
I second this
Thanks for this video. We were just days from going there but the massive fires kept us from going. Oklahoms City
