      Just an heads up, if you have an slim PS2 THAT IS NOT chipped/modded THIS WILL NOT WORK, you will need an original MC with the embedded MagicGate technology in order to boot FreeMCBoot otherwise the console will NOT boot from the memory card, *softmodded consoles are NOT capable of booting memory cards without MagicGate!!!*
      Refer to the FreeMCBoot documentation or look up "PS2 AIO Guide" for instructions on what models/hw mods/freemc versions/memory card combinations work!

    Of note is that it isn’t limited to PS3’s that are PS2 backwards compatible only. ALL PS3s still have PS1 b/c and the more card system/structure works the same way. And this little device works for PS1 as well.

    • @MegaRayland
      @MegaRayland 7 місяців тому +1

      @@noctsickversusTOBETOLD Yes and no: you can backup just the save files to a flash drive, but the system does a backup of the whole thing to a proprietary format. So you end up with a single file that you will be able to see but not read in a computer. I do not know if anyone since has developed any PC software that could read said files.
      So, as far as I am concerned, you will need either the old PS3 memory card adapter (to both copy to and from memory cards and backing said saves to PC), or you will need a device like this new memory card in the video above which does pretty much the same via Bluetooth.

    I feel like what’s missing from this would be a memory card manager homebrew for PS2 to automate the process of transferring save data from a regular memory card to the memcard pro 2’s per-game VMC feature.
    Also maybe USB-C

    • @majikthise7063
      @majikthise7063 9 місяців тому

      You can do that on this card natively, just create a memory card on the MCP2 either through using the gameID, on the device itself or with the web interface.
      You can then use the PS2 browsers own copy feature to move those saves to that specific card or you can create a standard card of any of the available sizes and move the saves to that either as individual cards or on one of the 8 channels available to each card. It is worth noting that some games have problems with the larger size cards, this was an issue back in the day since it's the games problem it can't read that large a card.
      You can also extract the memory cards from the SD card and use an emulator to access them and move emulator saves onto the card. So if you wanted to batch you can create a standard card, copy all the memory cards you want to manage after mounting them in the emulator.
      These functions are available on both the MCP2 and GCP so you can use Dolphin for example to access the memory card for the GC edit the card and restore.
      This is how I created a new FMCB card, you can even set it up for MC2SIO functionality with a bit of playing around.
      The things you can do with the card are stupid and I've only just started scratching the surface of the features they keep adding, I haven't yet dusted off my PS3 to try that yet.
      Honestly they are right when they say it's the last memory card you'll ever need, once you get it set up it's sliced bread.
      I was a bit sceptical that it was just hype until I got my Gamecube Pro, after a day of playing around I dropped the money on the MCP2 set it up and it's now a permanent fixture in my PS2 Fat, I'm even tempted to get a second or third for my Slim or PS1 so I don't need to keep swapping it about.
      You are right it could have done with a USB-C port but I suspect that was cost saving measure but the USB2 / Wifi is not going to saturate the SD card read/write speed even most computers won't.

      With freemcboot you can drag and drop saves off of usb thumbdrives using ulaunchelf and gamefaqs usually have plenty of saves to download(i used one for ddr extreme 2 because unlocking every song is a nightmare) there are tutorials on youtube on how to build saves with pc software as well for conversion between the ps2 emulators and real consoles because authentic ps2 saves have more data because they have that 3d image built into it thats necessary on the real system. On another note you can also make the image shown when viewing the memory card saves custom. There is also the other solution. OPL has a built in cheat system that uses raw codes. You can take codes from the action replays/gameshark and convert them to their RAW format and paste it into the opl cheat folder with ulaunch elf(using the usb stick again) so for your game you could just use the credits cheat

    About PS3 compatibility, I'm having issues where the memcard pro 2 seems to restart as I enter in and out of software or the PS3's memory card utility screen after enabling ps3 mode. The restart means that I lose ps3 mode and have to unplug/replug the memcard pro again. Also, unless I'm missing something, I don't think it's possible to use the memcard pro 2 directly on your PS3. I still have a 3 pack of ps1 memory cards in the case i bought back in the year 2000 shortly after i turned 17 for my bday. They claimed 2x the memory and then i thought that was a big deal. They are 3rd party ones but never corrupted my data. And they still work and have my saves from over 20 years ago. I remember one generic ps2 card i had erased my whole GTA vice city save. I was close to the last mission and boldly (and stupidly) never backed it up. Guess i had too much faith in the PS2 cards. When i heard PS3 didn't need a memory card anymore it was bought in my mind as soon as i had the money. Today i find it retro. I have a few ps1 games on ps5 that you can still use an emulated original memory card save menu or the newer button push with just save data menu. I prefer to use the old school save menu. Its fun to look at your old saves i dont know how many times i say now things like "when did i have THAT game? I dont remember that?" Or "why did i quit playing that game? It was so much fun?" And of course looking at save dates is fun too.

    • @BlackAxe101
      @BlackAxe101 10 місяців тому

      You should be able to. IIRC transferring saves is a bit more complicated then dragging and dropping a folder. You will need software like myMC, there is a article about how to use it on the PCSX2 forum.
      Getting old memory card files to digital should be as simple as plugin the memcard pro 2 with a sd card into your ps2, plugin old cards, copy everything, then either plug just the SD card or the memcard pro 2 with the cable to your pc and take all those files and use myMC to create a usable memory card for PCSX2/Duckstation.

    One reason I stopped playing modern day video games is because they eventually made it impossible to save data on a flash-drive for PS3 games. You have to pay a subscription service to PSN in order to save data.

    Quite a good idea, I had one of those ps3 adaptors even with the plastic case and back in the day when ps4 came out I sold my ps3 slim and that adapter and CeX scanned it and gave me 50p it was a thing no one was bothered about and now I’ve seen them shoot up in price. Lucky I backed all my ps2 saves up first to ps3 to a sd card then to PC.
    This device is good though and the fact you can run it also on PS3 is a good move.

    What I really loved to know is if you could use this neat little trinket via pc on an emulator? Because I have no means to play imported games on my PS2 or sometimes I just would use it to play my other games too because the enhanced visuals (because you can play the discs directly) and this way I could still store my savegames on an actual memory card what would really be awesome! If you can please let me know!

    Couldn't you use Free McBoot and transfer a PS2 save game to a flash drive, and the transfer the flash drive to your PS3, and then transfer the save? It's roundabout, but you weren't restricted to the PS2 memory card adapter.

    My backwards compatible PS3 is cookin these days. Is thermal paste the only solution? I tried a new fan and swapped out the power block for the one you recommended awhile back (I forget what it was called). Im afraid to turn it on cause after a few minutes it sounds like a hair dryer is in there, its crazy.

    • @Manic_Panic
      @Manic_Panic 10 місяців тому +4

      Thermal paste won't be enough. There are 2 solutions:
      1. Delid + CFW (to adjust fan speed).
      2. Do the "Frankeinstein" install. Swap your 90nm RSX chip with one from a Slim (40nm).
      Even then, there is no guarantee it will save your console but it's the most you can do for the old Phats. Mine got a red light of the death even though it was delid. You're better off just getting a Slim with CFW support, rip your PS2 discs onto the hard drive and play them from there. Compatibility is very high nowadays and games that still don't work have affordable remasters like the Ratchet & Clank trilogy.

      Most playstation 2s at this point have completely worn out lasers for the disc readers. They can be replaced with a 30 dollar part and a little bit of sautering on the slims, not too sure the application for phat models, would recommend just getting a phat model and a freemcboot memory card and adapter for an IDE hard drive and running games through OPL and only using the disc drive in games that dont run well with OPL which is pretty minimal at this point. As far as I know you can also run virtual memory cards through opl(similar to emulation) so you wouldnt really even need this special memory card in the video for it. Freemcboot is fantastic because you can obtain save data from the web and drop it on a thumbstick to be placed into a memory card on the ps2 so you could just keep a backup thumbstick for your saves. no more playing ddr for 30 hours to unlock all the songs.
      Also if you have a laptop or pc dont spend extra on preformatted memory cards and moddes consoles, just get a converter to plug the memory card into the pc and drop the necessary files yourself, i made the mistake of buying a 200 dollar ps2 off ebay but I guess it did come with everything I would ever need.
      Also get COMPONENT cables not COMPOSITE. Component has 3 different colors for video alone, composite has the yellow white and red. Quality on hd tvs is night and day

    The PS3 function is cool if you have a functioning backwards compatible ps3 (for ps2 games). PS2 Classics from the store dont use virtual memory cards so this wouldn't help for that. This does help for PS1 games (store download or from disc). Just putting that out there in case someone is curious. Never liked that ps2 classics have their own saves that you can't edit on a stock ps3.

    This may be a silly question, but I'm gonna ask anyways since there's a difference between harddrive space for software and save files. In addition to replacing the adaptor for ps3, does it also act as an expansion for space on the hard drive? I remember the BC PS3s only having 60GB of memory. I know they have mods for this now, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

  • @Antnj81

    All I want to know is if I need a PC at all for it. I heard you need to use a PC to format the SD card for it, as well as manage the virtual memory cards. That all seems unnecessarily complicated(not that I couldn’t figure it out, I’m just lazy and would rather not need a PC). All I’m looking for is a high capacity memory card that I can just slot in like the old memory cards. I don’t need all that other stuff.

    How's the compatibility? PS2 has a huge library of games and so there's games with every single memory card related bug you can think of.
    Games that can randomly wipe the entire card, games that randomly corrupt the card filesystem, games that aren't compatible with third party memory cards, games that freak out if your card is over 8MB and even some games that will corrupt saves on the card that are not its own.

    Was it just me or did anyone else also have a memory card for each genre? For example, I had a memory card for my JRPGs and another for my fighting games.
    I used to have that Sony Memory Card Adapter but back when I sold my PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, and PS Vita I sold them all (games, consoles, accessories). I remember selling that Memory Card Adapter for a lot of money on eBay after listing it as an auction.
    Anyway, something like this reminds me of the third party memory cards that had like 8 memory cards with 'pages' (I think that's what they called it). It also reminds me of the GameShark Pro I had on the PS1 that included the memory card feature that I never used because I didn't want to risk my files getting corrupted or anything like that.

There are so many "Charge Only" USB-C cables out there and in my collection that I hate having to test-and-see the cable to find a data one. Not sure about others but if you are modding, I would expect you have a drawer full of usb cables of all kinds too? the USB-C generation really goofed it making it so easy to (hard) to be fooled by the different cables. Its just a pin-out that carries Data, if the USB-C cable doesnt have it, all you have is a charging cable. Buying one from amazon is nightmare.
