Silent Hill: The Short Message (STREAM): We had technical difficulties. My capture card stopped recording mid-stream. Apparently it is too old to handle the game. I'm going to try streaming again tomorrow... either from a new capture card or from the PS5 directly.

I imagine the devs behind this have probably cobbled together the best game they can under horrendous studio pressure to capitalise on the popularity and nostalgia of the resident evil remakes... and suspect the lack of release date is maybe because they've got a buggy mess on their hands... i hope it's good because i never got into silent hill at the time and was very much a resi fan... but given they've just "remade" mgs3 but didn't do any new mocap or voice acting... i suspect this is a minimum effort affair as far as Konami is concerned...

if they make it so mele wepons break i wont buy it. thats one of the things why downpour was so bad. if you want it to be like the orginal you will agree with me and not have the weapons break. like he was saying in the video introducing new mechanics into the game will ruin it. if they do add anything they should make it so we can explore every building. that would be sick.

@@williammoon3207 no they aren’t aiming for specifically RE. But silent hill always relied on physiological horror not combat. Hence the reason why they didn’t focus on many guns or lazer aiming/ but now that we have this behind shoulder. It lost the charm that silent hill had: James and Heather are not an agents like Leon or Ada. That’s why it made sense that the aiming in the original silent hill was awful and camera angles were sloppy. There’s no need for combat behind shoulder angle. I swear these companies (with all their money and resources) have no actual idea what a good horror game is, nor do they care. Team silent would barf at this preview, those people WANTED the players to be scared so they focused on that, pure ambience discomfort and horror. The remake will be another garbage re remake clone. We all forgot about the remake the next day after the 1st trailer dropped and on top of that finding out what dumpsterfire of a company works on this game.
A month later a random person said oh right a SH2 remake is in the works and we were like yeah drop it, nobody cares.
I don't even know how I stumbled across these new trailers and be like yeah no surprise and moving on and then this video dropped right after EVEN THO MY AUTO PLAY IS OFF.
Gotta love YT giving me videos that I don't care about ...
I am honestly done with Silent Hill franchise after the 4th game back in 2004, many people I know don't even play games anymore we all moved on, I don't need constant reminders how horrible the gaming market is and how pointless all this is ... I am sick of it all.
I lost count how many times I erased all my internet history and yet it's even worse ... So I just say F it all. No wonder why many people deactivate their accounts too day by day.
Edit: I still have my PS2 versions of SH2,3,4 and SH1 too. Why the F would I ever need a remake of games that I love, it's just absurd to even think about how illogical all this is, heck there are great HD mods for the PC copies of the same.
Yet magically "fans" asked for these silly remakes and some new irrelevant games that somehow bare a SH title but have nothing to do with SH at all.
More like bored out of their life try-hard hipsters (nobodies) who don't know jack even if their life would depend upon it ... Most of them are not even going to buy the games but they "need" it.

I know Konami doesn't want to alienate NEW players by using those old systems, but those old systems actually did add up into the complete gameplay loop and feeling of the game. The closest thing I can get to that is "The Medium" but that's not Silent Hill and doesn't have any combat, and costs 50 US dollars even after 3 years. This is not so mundande and close to reality as it would like... what kinda apartment building is sporting a name over the entrance. Also the coin puzzle is now garnished with golden ornaments and stuff when it used to be a plain wooden box. Then i noticed that in the pool area now everything seems vandalized with graffiti, which makes silent hill feel like an lost abandoned place many people and delinquents know about. Sound wise I think people making guns sound weak I horror games is a silly mistake.
If anything the gun should be very loud, and your characters ears should be ringing after you shoot. Imagine taking a shot with a shot gun, after the first loud bang all the sound is muffled and an obnoxious ringing in ears starts.
It would only last a while, but the intensity of that moment would actually increase as your hearing decreases.

How I'd go for melee in SH2, with that kinda angle:
Every enemy has a stagger bar (invisible, of course). When you smack them, that bar fills up, and when it fills up, the enemy gets briefly staggered like we see in the trailer, letting you move out of the way. However, once an enemy is staggered their bar resets, and they gain resistance to stagger AND melee damage, though the resistance to melee is cancelled if they get knocked down. I feel like that will make melee into an unreliable spacing tool that you use to set up fights. Add to that a random modifier to stagger that every individual enemy applies so you might run into enemies where staggering them is not a possibility without getting hit yourself and it SHOULD make melee combat appropriately sticky and unpleasant.
Also while we're here I would love it if aiming REALLY narrows down your FOV to make it oppressive AND match someone who has no firearms training. I know I would aim down sights, one eye closed if I were to shoot and I've never even SEEN a gun IRL (thank god, I live in a more civilized part of the world).

But I couldn't see them release this game again with the same combat in 2024/25, I just don't think it would go over well with a newer audience. Like I was challenged in Resident Evil 2 and 3 for Playstation 2 more than I was challenged in RE4 for GameCube because RE4 just gave me too much control. It allowed my creativity to flourish and thus enemies ended up getting wrecked.

My suspicion is that this trailer was actually made a while ago, or it has older/outdated in-game footage mixed with some newer stuff. You can see slight detail changes. The blood coming from monsters looks very fake in a few shots, and more realistic in others. The shot of James using the shotgun looks like it could be an older version of his model.
When pressed about more info about the game, Bloober Team have mentioned that it was entirely Konami's decision to release more to the public. So I'm hoping that it's just the case of Konami has been sitting on this trailer (and possibly more) for some time and just made a poor decision to release this one instead of newer/improved gameplay footage.

Which is stupid because Homecoming was a totally different game. It kinda was doomed to suck because of its huge connections to the film. While the film itself wasn't bad by any means, Homecoming took a lot of things from it that weren't really fitting. I'm talking mostly about Pyramid Head and sexy nurses that never should have their place in this game, considering that they were monsters exclusively visible for James. Homecoming not only was too much of a fan-service but also seemed like the developers wanted to make this game more for the fans of the film, not for the fans of SH games. Now SH2 remake is free of those things as it's meant to tell the story we know in a much more modern gameplay and graphics. They don't have to shoehorn anything here.

I wouldn't say that the combat and the sound design are a problem in this game. As you mentioned in the video, those aspects can be adjusted to what we, the fans, want.
My concern is about how was the game presented on the trailer. If you search the original trailer of Silent Hill 2 (2001) you see the very identity of what SH2 was. It wasn't about just monsters chasing the player and them shooting them back; The characters were presented in such a way the topics of melancholy, depression, paranoid and solitude were shown to be important even when the genre of this game was horror.
Then we got the remake trailer, and it felt just like one of those videos of "Silent Hill remake using UE5" made by an enthusiast. It's one of those things that if the game had another name instead of SH2 nobody will hate it, but since it has now will have to respond to the expectations of the fans.

Something I noticed that made me think the combat has potential was how there doesn’t seem to be any aim sight on the weapons. You can’t simply aim down halls and pick apart enemies like most horror games do, without the aim sight it creates more tension.

Your assessment of the SH2 Remake combat trailer is spot on, Max. As is often the case, you've articulated my thoughts on this better than I could've. I'm personally optimistic about the game, but that's factoring in a bit of distance between the uncertainty of this remake and the greatness of the original title -- like when your favorite band puts out a new album with a new sound, it might still be a wonderful listen in isolation, but it'll never hold a candle to their breakthrough LP. As a horror game, SH2 remake will probably be a standout -- in comparison to the original, well, that's another question entirely.

  • @nunyabizniz4556
    @nunyabizniz4556 4 місяці тому +3

Judging from the trailer, avoiding RE-esque combat is close to impossible without changing the entire system. Instead, for guns, they could play upon his original lack of combat prowess by removing any reticles from ADS and add a slight delay between arm movement and camera movement. That way guns would have comparable limitations to melee, where they allow combat at a distance with a permanent weapon but with a good chance of wasting ammo (unless you're a crack shot).

Finally, an optimistic but concerned perspective on the combat trailer and just overall the remake rather than automatically hating on every single aspect of it. Some things definitely need to be polished more for sure, but I don't think this remake is looking anywhere near where a lot of the SH community constantly keeps complaining about. I get Konami hasn't treated the franchise well over the past decade but damn at this point it's like no matter what happens with the Silent Hill franchise, the community is just going to keep on complaining and nitpicking and it gets irritating to hear/deal with.
Great video! Felt like a breath of fresh air to finally hear more of positives that SH2 Remake is showcasing rather than focusing on all the negatives and just jumping aboard the hate train. Definitely not expecting RE remake quality but I'm still looking forward to this release when it drops.

If I could fix something about silent hill 2 is the transition off maria to mary, the way the original did was kind off sloopy. I mean, the dialogue is just.... "you could be her twin, just you hair and clothes are diferent" What!? that's just stupid, it's cartoon logic. I would present mary more at the beggining so we have a better reference of character, personality and looks, and then when we see maria first she looks kind of like her to at least be a little bit confusing (of course for the newcomers) but as the game progresses maria keeps changing to look more similar to mary and keep the players questioning what is happening, and then just do the complete change when the time is apropiate, like in Vertigo, wich I wouldn't doubt that was an influence to the maria/mary character. It wouldn't be surprising to us but at least the new players will be more pleasently surprised, because I remember when I first played the original it was so obvious, they don't hide it well, it was really a mistake, and now they have the opportunity to fix it... I doubt it, but we'll see.

    • @saladoc
      @saladoc 4 місяці тому

@@TYR1139 I get what you are saying, at least at the beggining she has to be an afterthough, but she is not an aftertough overall, she is the whole reason of the game. Besides showing mary before maria would set a radical diference between the 2, because really, we don't know nothing about mary until we see maria fliping between mary and then maria again, so it we saw her before, just a little bit, not that much, it would put more intrige to what's happeing (for the newcomers)
And if you ask me how would I introduce mary for the beggining, I'll probably put it maybe as a flashback (I'm just trowhing ideas here, it doesn't have to be like that) In the appartments a cutscene could be triggered when james enters in a room and is the room of the mary dress and we see james notice the dress, thus bringing memories back of mary using the dress, showing her personality to see a good insight of who she is or something like that, and then the cutscene ends in front of the dress in a shot that locks you in, so you have no option other than to take the flashlight and get the jumpscare, that would be a more effective jumpscare after the cutscene, because I remember the first time I played the game I saw the manequins behind the dress and I didn't get surprised by the jumpscare, because I am a player that investigates everything before doing what the game wants me to do, so I don't get the intended surprise if the game is not designed around that.

And that's the reasons no one remade movies like The Godfather or Pulp Fiction. Just to name some very influencial movies. These are considerated cult classics. Of course they have a huge emotional fanbase. You will find the same in the segment of videogames. Silent Hill 2 is a cult classic just like these movies. It didn't even sold that well during the time of it's release but like Blade Runner did as a movie, it gained a huge cult after release. People want this to be great and that's the most dangerous part in attempting to remake such a beast, especially when it is created by a studio with a questionable track record. Konami is aware of the popularity of Silent Hill 2. They are going all-in here and delivering a movie based on the original next to the Remake. Remaking the first game (again) never was a real option I think. It's just too bad they never re-released the first game. They could easily let it remaster by M2.

One of my nitpicks is the over-the-shoulder camera. One of the biggest reasons that the SH series, at least up to 3, was that the camera being fixed in certain areas left you to wonder, i.e. the scene with the dead body in the chair. Because your camera is locked into that position, you can't fully see the model. In other areas, like entering a room with the camera facing you made it unsettling. The game doesn't want to introduce you to the room, it wants you to do that yourself. Another thing is that it really adds to the feeling of claustrophobia; having to maneuver your camera in a tight hallway or a small room while there's enemies around makes you panic. And it also makes it feel like you're being watched is some angles; having the camera angled above or below you, or outside the door of a room you're in. I will say that, of course I understand that they want to keep the horror while also removing the clunky-ness of the original. Having the camera maneuver like the original would be strange for a more modern version.
Obviously this is just my own opinion, but I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?

And the sound and graphical problems are most likely due to the game being unfinished. "Technically ready" most likely means it can be played from start to finish, but not neccessarily that it's a complete and polished experiance. It's worth noting that Bloober Team is a Polish studio, so English isn't their first language.

These days people criticize even trailers...and what is the point for releasing a trailer of a game still in development? Are they going to do something about what people dislike? Bend the development according to consumers expectations? Please fan base? Compromise the final product?...long live the original silent team...

It was only concerning because of the fighting clunk. I noticed 3 new things: the wardrobe with hands as handles, enemies sidestep now and also enemies can “grab” you and you gotta kick out. I’m so excited! I LOVE the new soundtrack tho!
