- In this video, I taste through the brand new release from Hampden Estate in Jamaica: The 8 Marks Collection. The eight rums within this set are all of Hampden's unaged distillates. These are the marks or rums that Hampden uses to make all of their commercial releases. Besides tasting through the bottles, I explain what a mark is, what esters are and how they relate to flavor and dive into Hampden's production process. These are some FUNKY rums!

For anyone wondering, the 1600g/hLPA limit in Jamaica is due to high flavor rums being sold in bulk to Europe, mainly those created through a process that could get up to 7000g/hLPA. They were then used to flavor pure grain alcohol made in Europe which effectively priced out lower ester rums from the island. The law made it a level playing field as most producers could produce a rum above 1000g/hLPA at the time. To learn more, research the Cousin's process of producing extremely high ester rum and what it meant for the industry.
I love all 8 of them, but my personal favorites were a tie of HGML, H, and HLCF. They have the perfect balance of fruity or meaty and acidic in a way that truly wows me.

Thank you for sharing that info! At some point I might make a video focusing just on the history of jamaican marks and its export. While my fav is HLCF, I've come to really like HGML.

But seriously, thanks for the detailed review. I would hate to see the re-takes and script re-writes for this one. I'm surprised every camera angle change didn't show you wearing a different sweater. And many thanks to Hampden House for putting out such a unique and amazing tasting set for us rum geeks. We're in that unique club of spirit appreciators who fly stealthily below the bourbon and tequila hype ceiling, still able afford the highest quality spirits.

After trying out a bottle of Hampden overproof, I got this kit and it kinda gave an idea on what to look for and what to skip in the Hampden range personally, thinking of trying to find a bottle of older great house like 2020 next for that aged H. Overall found the diamond marks and the DOK to be my favs for their cool funk and pallet of tropical fruits with that vanilla, pepper and nuts, they are challenging, but surprisingly complex for something unaged.
The 2020 is probably my favorite of the Great House range. Also, Down Island Spirits just released a single cask of aged H. I haven't had it yet but since you liked the H, might be worth checking out.

I would love to get hands on this. I'll just settle for the aged bottles. I love the fact that you described the last one as licking a battery. Some of my favorite tequilas have that taste.
It'll be fun to do a side by side of the unaged vs the aged.
So, obviously no clue where in the world you are, but there are a few online sellers in the US that still have some of these available. (Mine was delivered today!)

Really really insightful. I got this for my wife for a Christmas gift. We love rum however this was a leap for us and your explanations really made it worth it.

Still working my way through this. The nose on DOK is endless but the palate is like a mouth full of gravel. Still processing it. Going to put each of these into a Hampden and Ting, anda Daiquiri, and drink the rest neat.

Mouth full of gravel is a great description. I'm now working through and making a daiquiri of each and then will blend all 8 together for a 8 Marks Daiquiri
