Haha Yeah I thought the same thing. I think he was preparing us before by cutting the videos to tell us to like and subscribe...pretty genius. I like this guy
@@spaghetto-v8z not really because that specific tattoo only works as a piece when it lines up. It's not comparable wit 'oh, your butterfly strechted a little since I gained weight', because the butterfly still makes sense and is a cohesive piece. That circle will end up as a few random lines that do not align anymore and the tattoo doesn't make sense anymore.
The guy talking about mixing colors based on skin tone is talking about using color theory to achieve the most contrast according to the recipient's skin pigment. All artists should know about the color spectrum and about how each color has a corresponding color that is its "opposite" and would therefore achieve the most contrast (e.g., red-green, yellow-purple, blue-orange, to keep it simple). I actually think it is really cool that he is doing that - so many people of color get told that tattoos just won't ever look as good on certain darker shades of skin. I think its awesome that an artist is trying to find ways to improve the longevity of tattoos for people of color by taking their skintone into account when selecting colors. You may not see the value in a small difference between a red toned black and a blue toned black, but someone with olive-toned skin absolutely will because a red toned black is going to contrast with the slight green hue of their skin better than a blue tone would. For people with particularly dark complexions, anything to increase contrast is going to improve the visibility and longevity of their tattoos. You, as an artist who works in Mexico, might want to play around with using color to tone black ink based on your client's skin tone. Maybe you can find someone with a darker, orange-reddish complexion who will let you compare standard black ink to black ink that is tinted with green or blue to see if it improves how the black contrasts with their skin. For what its worth, color theory is dope and can be REALLY helpful for artists. For example, if you have a bunch of different colored paints that vary in tone (some pastel, some neon, some earthy, etc.) but you want to use those general colors in a piece, just with a more cohesive palette, you can mix a small amount of one color in with all the others to give them all a matching underlying tone that will make it so they all 100% go together. You can just choose a tone based on the theme of the piece (e.g., give each color a slightly pink hue for a sunset scene, a slightly blue hue for a hazy, rainy landscape, etc.) That saves you the trouble of having to buy a bunch of different sets of paints when you want to use a slightly different tone than what you have available.
One of the first tips i got from professional tattoo artists when i started tattooing someone told me to add a drop of blue ink into lining black when tattooing darker skin for the lines to read better. I've just been following the advice thinking he must know better and nobody ever complained. I just thought it's commonly known "secret" in the industry, these guys are just trying to make money out of it selling the "secret formula"
I'm from the beauty world so I can see the appeal of using color theory in ink based on the undertone of a client. I'm wondering how different "blends" of black would heal though because most blank ink tattoos heal with a blue tint anyways.
Literally I was like have you never heard of undertones? Makes perfect sense to me 😂 Sincerely, someone who has never done a single tattoo, that also owns 47 different foundations 👍💅🙃

Hey! The part where you comment on the black ink hue vartiation in relation to the skin base colour is nothing new. Here in the west i've seen most people not giving it much thought but i've heard to some japanese traditional guys explaining how different sumi heals different in different skin tones and they adjust wich sumi stick to grind to achieve a certain hue in their blacks. I think the waboripedia podcast, in the interview with London Slade he goes over this thing, but japanese traditional is based on hard evidence thru experience given from masters to apprentices.
it totally makes sense with colour theory! tho i'd prefer not to have a bunch of different blacks on me from different artists cause it's not industry standard (in the west at least)
@@h-di4qd yeah totally, the whole ink consistency and artist fidelity here is very different from theirs. Thei go to one horishi and they always know exactly the ink they use and where they got it. Me personally I try to keep records for every tattoo I make just in case

My best friend got tattooed by Whang-od like 20 years ago. She said between the heat and the pain it was like a rite of passage, which is cool because that was kind of the point of a lot of Indigenous tattooing.

Kirk you are finally getting more recognition! I appreciate your insight and you are a true salt of the earth tattoo artist, you make me reconsider getting tattoos that wouldnt have stayed and Im thankful for that!
Man, one of the best trad tats i got was from a scratcher, thus the reason im a scratcher, one of the reasons anyway; the industry is fucked for people over 25, i cant get an apprenticeship! I cant even work as a dirt poor shop hand, i have a kid and wife and rent and bills. So that now has to mean that im precluded FOR LIFE from being a tattooer? Nah, fuck thay noise, dude. Im gonna practice on fake skin and my own legs for a long time before i start charging money, but im gonna scratch. Is there another way? Im genuinely asking, besides an unpaid apprenticeship or slave-wage shop hand, IS there another way? Cause i would jump at it!
I'm 46, I don't know where you are located, but I live in South Florida and many of the shops in and around ft Lauderdale and Miami don't discriminate at all about age. Practice, put together a book of art and finished tats you've done. I've seen plenty of people of all ages build up a reputation . And yeah a lot of them have to work 2 jobs at first, but ya know I used to bartend and teach elementary school. If you really want to do it, there's a way
It’s awesome that he isn’t hocking tattoo supplies/lotions for his first sponsored video. Even if it does happen in the future it’s cool he didn’t jump straight to that.
I think it was on r/agedtattoos, but there was a full white and brown sleeve in the style of those flowers. I think it was only 3 years old, but it looked surprisingly good. Some of the white had faded, but the way they did the shading, it still held up. I think it was deleted though because it's not in my reddit history 😢. I was honestly expecting really bad results when I saw the fresh picture at first.
I really wanna see Kirk react to some eyeball tats. I got eye surgery recently so my eye is saturated really red from the blood. I told some stranger who asked about my eye that it was an eye tat. Just as a joke. But then he told me people really get their eyeballs tatted so it’s not that unbelievable.
I went to the old lady in the Philippines this year with a good friend of mine. A lot of people may not know this, but to go see her in the village it’s a whole journey! Flying out to Manila from wherever you are from, then ride a car for 10-11 hours and once you get to the bottom of the mountain you have to hike up for 45 mins.-1 hour, depending on your athleticism. The 3 dots tattoo with Apo Whang Od took maybe 10 minutes, but the line can get pretty long and you will need a local person to guide you through the process. The 3 dots costs 300 pesos, I believe, which is less than USD 10. I got mine done and it looks what one would expect…the dots aren’t perfectly circular and the pain to get them ranged anywhere from 1 - 10, very inconsistent lol However… it’s the journey of getting ‘em dots!!! My friend and I made new friends, experienced different culture and had cool stories to tell folks at home. So tattoos do really represent memories 😊 and this is the most expensive tattoo I have considering all the traveling expenses involved 😂😂😂
11:41 I was actually following an artist that does this. Most of the times, from afar it looks like nothing but up close, it looks pretty intricate and cool. Most of his pieces begin at £500, regardless of size.

Oh, shit! Dude, that was the best looking thing I've seen in a long while. Got a motherfucker wanting to get some traditional done for the first time in my life. Lol. That shit was too clean!
I'm gonna be deadass, I have no tattos, no real desire to ever a tattoo, and no idea about tattoos and think the 'scratchy sleeve' you showed looks kinda rad. So it is probably designed to be sold to people who have no idea about tattoos lol. Cool video, interesting to learn about something I never really thought about
Sup Kirk! Love the vids Commenting as a non tattoo artist and a person with one tattoo I’ve heard they mix red with black to keep it dark too. I think thats funny Kirk called me out.
I thought that girl saying the thing about scratchers was talking about stuff like the Brutal Black Project. People hide their ability to do clean lines so they do a style like that.

I wouldn't be so sure that the people who are doing technically well applied watercolor and color realism tattoos without outlines know the tattoo is going to look like sh!t in 2 years. A lot of the people doing those kinds of tattoos are young art school grads who don't have any tattoos older than 4 years and have never been to a tattoo shop before working at one.
It doesn’t even take 2 years to look awful lol. A girl came to my shop to get a similar floral piece reworked and she got it 9 months ago. I’ve honestly never seen a tattoo look that bad, especially so fast 😮
The snake scale thing…that is because the person doesn’t have observational drawing skills. Obviously does not draw - many a reason behind terrible designs, regardless of subject matter
I think that really bad tattoo of a man wearing a tiger skin on some dumbass's shoulder was done by the same guy who did a really bad Medusa head which was on one of your videos a while back. The "art" work looks very familiar.
The vegan at the end reminded me of working on sea shepherd ships and there were a lot of hardcore straight edge people that were super tatted up and I borrowed one of their tattoo machines to do a dagger that I totally fucked and thankfully mostly fell out. Everyone told me the lines were too tight and it was too tight of a design but my cocky dumbass was like "I draw daggers all the time, it won't be hard to tattoo" I hadn't even practiced on fake skin or an orange 😂 literally the first line I put down went from too deep and blown out to too shallow and falling out and the needle was binding as I tried to do it. I didn't even know how to properly set the machine up 😂 Made about every mistake you could make in a tattoo besides misspelling something but thankfully it's mostly faded and I'm gonna get it covered up at some point. The Squidward is pretty janky but decent for a noob scratcher's second tattoo on skin and I'm not even that great at drawing. I also got "skate and destroy" stick and poked around my wrist in a faunt I designed but in another case of not listening to people that knew better the guy said it would be better to do solid letters rather than outlines and I was like "nah I can always fill it in later" woulda looked way better if I had listened 😂 so three out of four tattoos I have were done on a ship with a bunch of vegans cause what else to do when you're stuck in a dock in a rural part of Mexico? My one professionally done tattoo is an American traditional fouled anchor with a banner with my first serious girlfriends initials, she dumped me a month later 😂 her initials are ART though so can kinda play it off but I own the stupidity and she also got married so her initials are different now anyways. Also got the anchor before I joined the ship and in sailor tattoo culture an anchor is supposed to be for your sweetheart and also means you've crossed the Atlantic which I only got to do because after we broke up I had no idea what to do with myself and joined sea shepherd and ended up crossing the Atlantic. Also on the vegan thing I had several crew mates complain about me swatting flies in the mess hall because all the dead fish we were getting covered in from removing illegal nets in the marine sanctuary we were protecting were attracting flies and I just about threw a fit. I was like "really guys you're gonna get mad at me cause I don't want flies crawling on my food? I'm pretty sure most tattoo inks aren't technically vegan and there's literally bigger fish to fry here" Anyways to sum it all up: vegans can be super annoying, traditional tattoos done right are sick (even with ex's initials in them), and I'm too dumb to listen to good advice so I live with the consequences of that lifestyle 😂
A guy I worked with was from serbia he had a sleeve from the diablo game series no outlines or anything the tattoo artist went to learn for 10 years from a guy in Sweden how to do basically like a laser printer no outline just working bottom up going line by line basically and it looked amazing. Anytime he's going home for something he books tattoos with the guy because he's probably one of the only guys that can do that style ever.
@4:13 I know we all hate Ink master here 🐈⬛ But this reminded a friend of someone about that time everyone got mad at that DJ guy on ink master for “cheating” in a challenge,
I’ve been getting 3 sessions a week on my arm for a few months, since it’s blackout, colour and realism with filler that also takes ages to do lol also got micro realism sections
Damn, idk bro. I just randomly stumbled across your channel, I don't have any know nothing about tattoos. But that scratchy line stuff looks fucking sick to me. I think my only worry ( as someone who knows literally nothing) is all the lines seem so small and light that I would worry they would like fade or turn into a blob or something as they age. Idk how tattoos work, that would be my main concern, but yea I think that red one looks fucking dope, and the like, floating lanterns? or whatever that is? Idk, sick.
I think the Butterfly/Moth argument is a personal thing, I prefer Moths because I like dark things, I prefer the moon to the sun the night to the day the Raven over the Dove and so on..but as you say you prefer Butterflys which are cool too but just not for everyone imo, a little feminine for my style tbh but nothing wrong with that if that's your preference. Jmo also. I know many will disagree with my " feminine " line. And everyone has their own preference to do so.
If this worked reliability it would be kinda cool to where you'd basically only have visible tattoos outside during the day if UV activataes it and white light deacrivates it but the examples they were showing looked like hot garbage. Might as well just get henna cause it looks like a more burgundy red shitty version of henna.
10:08 I thought she was referring more to ignorant style tattoos. They're purposefully meant to look like a child/ bad artist has done them, and that's what most scratchers do best 🤔
Maybe with the person who did that well done flower, they want the client to come back for a touch up so they could collect more money. unless they do free touch ups
I got my first tattoo it’s a owl in the forest with a deer below it on my forearm I might add a river on the wrist and add more stuff like a sky with a moon
As upset as I was with the viking kitty cat tat 😂😂😂 it made me smile and could be fixed probably pretty easily with an actual good artist. Theres no fucking black in it 😂😂😂
Color theory isn’t guessing. It’s color theory and something I assumed would be basic knowledge among tattooers but I guess not lol It’s definitely something that makes a difference though. How can it not when a layer of the person’s skin will be over the tattoo once it’s healed?
Wait is this the first sponsor? He's becoming a real UA-camr lol

SPONSOR WOOO
Get that sponsor Kirk!!
Kirks getting sponsors now, holeh moleh. Ive been here for a while, its kind of weird to see him becoming like an actual youtuber
I got tattooed by a sweet old lady on a motorized cart...I didn't even see it comin'
How do you not see the value of color theory?
I think he’s trying to incorporate color theory into black coloring re tattooing🤷
Shoutout dirtbag Chaz in Nashville TN
A guy I worked with was from serbia he had a sleeve from the diablo game series no outlines or anything the tattoo artist went to learn for 10 years from a guy in Sweden how to do basically like a laser printer no outline just working bottom up going line by line basically and it looked amazing. Anytime he's going home for something he books tattoos with the guy because he's probably one of the only guys that can do that style ever.
bro let’s goo more sponsors incoming
thank you haha the first of many
Scratchy Line Bullshit Design is the name of a class every Gen-X art student had to take in the 90’s.
@4:13 I know we all hate Ink master here 🐈⬛ But this reminded a friend of someone about that time everyone got mad at that DJ guy on ink master for “cheating” in a challenge,
Yeah, I immediately thought of that too!
It took me so long to figure out that the circle was the tattoo and not as like a locator for the tattoo inside
my boy got a sponsor!!?? never been happy to see one lol but this is a good one keep it up
It is popular on Instagram. Especially when a celebrity gets it and the tattooer posts on their page. People think Wow! it's so cool.
I think tramp stamps are already back.
watched the sponsor. gotta make sure our boy gets all the watch time
thank you freind
I’ve been getting 3 sessions a week on my arm for a few months, since it’s blackout, colour and realism with filler that also takes ages to do lol also got micro realism sections
Your first sponsor jumpscared me 💀
it scared me too haha
I have a tiger tattoo but now because of you I want a panther too
11:06 looks like a bad skin condition or a weird hair pattern on a very hairy arm
A very specific demographic is getting those “scratchy but artsy” nothing tattoos lol 😇
I definitely want a tiger tattoo. I could see myself with like 7 dragon tattoos though.
10:08 I thought she was referring more to ignorant style tattoos. They're purposefully meant to look like a child/ bad artist has done them, and that's what most scratchers do best 🤔
I have dumb tattoos, but I dont get that first one at all... Each to their own though.
Could the artist who created the tattoo with the peach flowers redo them when they fade?
Maybe with the person who did that well done flower, they want the client to come back for a touch up so they could collect more money. unless they do free touch ups
Did Darwin Nunez become a tattoo artist?
I got my first tattoo it’s a owl in the forest with a deer below it on my forearm I might add a river on the wrist and add more stuff like a sky with a moon
Yes a new video!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
fine line scratchy looks like arm hair
Woot! You are sponsored!!!
You should title your next video “ how to tattoo”
His Secret
Get that bag dude!
As upset as I was with the viking kitty cat tat 😂😂😂 it made me smile and could be fixed probably pretty easily with an actual good artist. Theres no fucking black in it 😂😂😂
12:46 he literally says to practice on artificial skin at the 12:34 mark. He didn’t say practice on people!
How the fuck is that dude able to afford tattooing that often. Not even sitting through the pain
You should roast Olympic athlete tattoos...
You know. For fun.
We love your videos ❤
Color theory isn’t guessing. It’s color theory and something I assumed would be basic knowledge among tattooers but I guess not lol It’s definitely something that makes a difference though. How can it not when a layer of the person’s skin will be over the tattoo once it’s healed?
My ex is a tattoo artist and he hated lions too lol
Dang, the black heart is sick, SICKNESS. 🖤
That a Fort Worth Tattoo you got there?
No, it's my poisonous vape machine.
