This song is about his struggles with depression and especially his epilepsy, he used to have a lot of seizures.. the songs are more deeper them they may seem, just so you know sadly Ian Curtis the singer hanged himself.. RIP Ian 💔
First song I had heard from Joy Division after hearing "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I heard about them after I had just started getting into New Order back in 1988. This song's energy, the vibe...I was hooked. Then I listened to the entire album ("Unknown Pleasures") straight through, and I was stunned and amazed. Glad you reviewed this song!
epilepsy - Curtis (the lead singer) found out that he had epilepsy and in those days there was not too much around for relief in the form of medicine. Curtis was basically singing about his condition. Correct on the bass... massive bass sound and a lot of balls from Curtis to write and sing about his problem. Amazing sound from that band and true legends... fair play for spotting these cats. - i'll add this... Curtis ended up taking his life because of this condition... very sad
Great review Marcos- love your Joy Division reactions- I am a subscriber now! You have to listen to New Dawn Fades by Joy Division next. It's another great song off of their classic album Unknown Pleasures released in 1979.
One of the first post punk bands and since it's the first song on the album, one of the first post punk songs ever heard? Not really. A few of the Kraut rock bands in Germany, as well as Brian Eno and even David Bowie were already exploring this territory, even before punk came along.. And this album would probably been more straight punk, hadn't it been produced by Martin Hannett. Totally epic album, regardless. You'll find more Joy Division songs to love. for sure. Thanks!
For a long time I didn't understand why Joy Division affected me so much. Then I read a piece (I am not sure if it was from Simon Reynolds but later I found he has written a lot of great shit about Joy Division) about how Joy Division rewired punk. Like, they actually turned it inside out and then JD made more sense to me. I don't think any band has sounded like Joy Division before or since. Listening to it is like listening to Johnny Cash. It's just true, ya know? There is no frills. It is like an editor's dream begging his writers to dispense with the clutter. Here is a band that makes engaging music and not a note is misspent. JD is the most bone-tight band ever and I think that is what makes them so affecting. It is entirely raw and vulnerable all of the time. This is really all an artist does, bare his soul, fearlessly, yet within a vessel that people relate and understand.
This song is FANTASTIC! Thank you whoever requested it. Since you're so open minded, may wanna check out Siouxsie and the Banshees. Same time period but she did some incredible stuff in the 90's, in my opinion. Early stuff maybe try City Lies in Dust or Israel. 90's I'd recommend Scarecrow or Ornaments of Gold.
Totally unrelated to this song - I would love to see a reaction to One Way by the Levellers - there's a particularly good performance of the song from the Glastonbury festival that I would recommend.
You should try some New Order - Regret or Blue Monday Also suggest Siouxsie & the Banshees' Cities in Dust and Lost Weekend by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
What's the point of reading the lyrics after the listening? It still puzzles me that people do that. If anything, they are supposed to be soaked up along with the music and the specific vocal delivery. Not supposed to be coherent or linear or whatever. It's not a short story or even a poem.
Peter Hook is a fantastic bass player.
my fav joy division song! an absolute banger
good video :)
No idea you listened to Joy Division
Holy shit I saw you stopped uploading like a year ago, damn, I've been out of the CS scene for a bit but I thought you'd still be active

I'd recommend you watching live performance of She's lost control by Joy Division. It's the only way to really get to know them.
I second this

I really appreciate you taking the time to read the lyrics and trying to interpret your thoughts on each song! Not many people do that
Love the punkyness of it as well.

Yes! This is their best song IMO. It's so good.
Probably my favorite JD song. Pure love. Whenever it comes on I just want to thrash about dancing.

Great suggestion! I'll check them out!
Song to the Siren This Mortal Coil / Nine while Nine Sisters of Mercy
One of my fav bands of all time! Shame Ian commited suicide, check out a movie called 'Control' a biopic of Ian curtis
That film utterly destroyed me. The end ing is beyond harrowing :(:::
@@2-scoops975 such is life. sad and beautiful at times. all to be appreciated
I agree on the bass. I play and was impressed! No shit on the vocals but that's just from what I'm familiar with. This was a first listen for me too!
By the vocals I meant actual singing vs. depressed talking. 😆
Could you try a non-english rock band? I have suggestions
Burzum - lost wisdom
Tallerz- next up
Why did the Arctic Monkeys songs stop?????
Review “Dark Entries” by Bauhaus
Try DISORDER from NEPAL 🇳🇵
Marcos-san, please react to The Bangles - Eternal Flame
Please react to dirty air by Two Door Cinema. 🤧🤧🤧🤧
Big 80s vibe. The tempo and the sounds of the instruments seem 80ish. The vocals remind me of The B-52s. Okay tune.
