When did we start describing people as 'latinos?' As a born and bred Londoner we always referred to those from Spain as Spanish, from Colombia as Colombian, from Argentina, Argentinian etc etc etc.
actually, "Latinos" is wrong, as "Latin" refers to those communities that spoke "Latin" in the old days "Italians, Spanish, French and Romanians", they were the people who in old times could speak "Latin" and the rest of South Americans don't know a word in Latin, we are "Spanish-Americans" but not "Latin-Americans", we come from Spanish but not from the Latin, I hope this can clarify the mistake that often is made when people refer to "Latinos", as this is wrong, we're "Americans" as any person from USA or Canada or Mexico ......... but directly from the mix with the Spanish conquerors when they arrived in the America Antillana = Caribbean (that comes from Caribes = an Indigenous tribe in the north of Colombia) that were so ferocious in fighting the Spanish that they preferred to die and not become slaves; then the Spanish conquerors gave them the name of "Caribes" = Pirañas (as they were compared to the flesh-eating fish in the Amazon) due to the ferocity and cannibals tendencies as they would eat their enemies after the battle.
We understand the historical background and the legalities surrounding the term "Latino" or "Latinoamericano." Yes, technically, we are Hispanic Americans, and we know the arguments behind it. However, we identify as Latinos. It’s not about history or strict definitions-it’s about how we perceive ourselves and how we’ve embraced this term over time. Latinoamericano is more than a label; it’s a shared identity, a sense of unity among us. Whether someone agrees or not, it doesn’t change how we feel or what we call ourselves. This is who we are-Latinos. Like it or not, that won’t change.

The irony is that people actually prefer independent traders and businesses to corporate ones. The only reason that more people from the wider community dont go to these places, is because they've allowed them to go into a state of disrepair. If these traders were in a nice shopping centre alongside other more corporate businesses, I'm certain they would both thrive bc the clientele would mix and people that wouldn't normally go to the latin coffee shop would maybe try it and maybe someone who always goes to one, might pop into a Starbucks. But hey, these corporations prefer to eliminate the competition instead, they dont want us customers to have any other choice but their's.
@giantgrow yeah sure just replace everything with chain global corporate shops. Is it free market or rigged market? When it's impossible to compete, is that free market? Or are politicians in alliances with global corporations giving them advantages that violate free market?

But it includes Albanians, Pakistanis, Chinese, Ukrainians. What? Why say its for foreign nationals. It is a rich and diverse corner for Spanish Speakers. That helps the country as a whole in my opinion. I think London needs to protect small business in general. Brexit and some conservative populist ideas actually do this. The biggest cultural battles in the U.K. and U.S.A. are big business versus small business. They need to be careful not to ruin these small business markets.
Moved out from there. It’s a shame markets like this close. As a Spanish I eat fresh food and make it myself and in UK I have notice it’s difficult because they are so used to buy everything already done or semidone.

it's not about "not wanting to change" it's about redevelopment that creates new properties with higher rents that only big corporations can afford. This could also happen to traditional smaller British establishments, so it's not just a "them" problem. Everyone is getting left behind except the big corporations.
We should describe people based on their nationality (Colombian, Peruvian, Mexican ,etc) and not made up terms such as latino. The real latins were Romans and they come from Rome! They are Italians and not from South/central America!
The Romans used to call the Iberia Penisula Hispania. Hispania was made up of mainly Celts and a few Germanic tribes. It ridiculous to call South/Central Americans Hispanic. It would be like calling all people from the British Empire such as Nigeria and India Anglo Saxons! 😂
@@anna3046 Your example falls really short. Just to start, are you aware that there's common blood between most South Americans and Souther Europeans? Common blood between Nigerians and Brits is not existent. But the real problem is that in the silly US identity politics they decided to elevate the term Hispanic or Latino to a racial category when it was supposed to group people by language. I think is OK if you use the term Hispanic to refer to people who use spanish as their native language. This is not different to use Anglo to refer to something that relates to english languag, e.g. Anglo music.
Some south/Central Americans are of Spanish ancestry however most people aren’t! In genetics tests carried out in Spain, native Spanish are R1B which is the Celtic gene similar to other Western Europeans on the Atlantic side. The most prominent gene in South/Central America is the Q3.
@@anna3046 It just took a 5 minute search to find that the Q3 halogroup is more prevalent in studies conducted on native american population exclusively. In mestizo populations is quite different. I found this: "Halogroup distribution and paternal ancestry among 19 potential haplogroups to be identified with the Y-SNPs analyzed, we found 16 in the total Mexican-Mestizo population sample. Haplogroups O*, C* and C3* were not detected (Table 2). Total paternal ancestry was predominantly European (49.9%), including haplogroups R*, R1a1*, R1b1*, I* and E1b1b1*, whose frequency increased toward north and west (range, 43.2-65%)." And this is a study in Mexico where there are one of the highest concentrations of native Americans. So expects higher values of R1b1 in countries like Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia or Chile, or even higher in South Brazil, Uruguay or Argentina. Which brings us back to the point that there's common blood between the two regions whether you like it or not. However, the main point is both Hispanic or Latino(includes brazilians) should only be used as a language group not as racial category otherwise you are making the same mistake as they make in the US.
@Answersonapostcard they are clearly not. They just had some shops with their traditional food. The issue is whether you're ok with redevelopment that prices out smaller non-global chain shops.

Yes, same, miss the restaurants and coffee shops inside.
The area around Elephant & Castle is really nice now after the redevelopments. There's a new park, lots of restaurants, and there are still plenty of latino shops & bars, they've just been moved into modern units next to the park. It's a shame that "La Bodeguita" is no longer there, but there are other Latin bars & restaurants a bit further down Old Kent Road.
This is an OLD VIDEO. Elephant & Castles Shopping Centre closed about 3 years ago. It's been totally demolished and the new building are going up.

There is also a Brazilian contingent with their own culture catered to with ethnic supermarket and other amenities.

When did we start describing people as 'latinos?' As a born and bred Londoner we always referred to those from Spain as Spanish, from Colombia as Colombian, from Argentina, Argentinian etc etc etc.
Snowflake
actually, "Latinos" is wrong, as "Latin" refers to those communities that spoke "Latin" in the old days "Italians, Spanish, French and Romanians", they were the people who in old times could speak "Latin" and the rest of South Americans don't know a word in Latin, we are "Spanish-Americans" but not "Latin-Americans", we come from Spanish but not from the Latin, I hope this can clarify the mistake that often is made when people refer to "Latinos", as this is wrong, we're "Americans" as any person from USA or Canada or Mexico ......... but directly from the mix with the Spanish conquerors when they arrived in the America Antillana = Caribbean (that comes from Caribes = an Indigenous tribe in the north of Colombia) that were so ferocious in fighting the Spanish that they preferred to die and not become slaves; then the Spanish conquerors gave them the name of "Caribes" = Pirañas (as they were compared to the flesh-eating fish in the Amazon) due to the ferocity and cannibals tendencies as they would eat their enemies after the battle.
idk man easier to group?
We understand the historical background and the legalities surrounding the term "Latino" or "Latinoamericano." Yes, technically, we are Hispanic Americans, and we know the arguments behind it. However, we identify as Latinos. It’s not about history or strict definitions-it’s about how we perceive ourselves and how we’ve embraced this term over time.
Latinoamericano is more than a label; it’s a shared identity, a sense of unity among us. Whether someone agrees or not, it doesn’t change how we feel or what we call ourselves. This is who we are-Latinos. Like it or not, that won’t change.

Because they probably own the shops and surrounding houses compared to renting. They also have mosques, schools, banks etc, so the money is circulated amongst their own, which helps when liaising with local authorities/local mps. Just go visit tooting broadway/bec or Whitechapel and see.

Why do local councils knock the heartbeat out of communities? I wish them all the best in their fight.
@giantgrow yeah sure just replace everything with chain global corporate shops. Is it free market or rigged market? When it's impossible to compete, is that free market? Or are politicians in alliances with global corporations giving them advantages that violate free market?

At :13 the narrarator says the trader's corner is welcoming to "foreign nationals" like themselves. That little word play excludes native brits who probably won't go there much, understandably. I respectfully disagree. London is not moving forward, London is becoming more corporate and losing it's soul.
If you do not want to change than you will be left behind
it's not about "not wanting to change" it's about redevelopment that creates new properties with higher rents that only big corporations can afford. This could also happen to traditional smaller British establishments, so it's not just a "them" problem. Everyone is getting left behind except the big corporations.
The government is being racist with latinoameican but not with Pakistani.
that's very unfortunate. Redevelopment is not the answer. More housing supplies will cause the housing market to collapse. simple demand and supply.

We should describe people based on their nationality (Colombian, Peruvian, Mexican ,etc) and not made up terms such as latino. The real latins were Romans and they come from Rome! They are Italians and not from South/central America!
They see Hispanos.
I found this:
"Halogroup distribution and paternal ancestry among 19 potential haplogroups to be identified with the Y-SNPs analyzed, we found 16 in the total Mexican-Mestizo population sample. Haplogroups O*, C* and C3* were not detected (Table 2). Total paternal ancestry was predominantly European (49.9%), including haplogroups R*, R1a1*, R1b1*, I* and E1b1b1*, whose frequency increased toward north and west (range, 43.2-65%)."
And this is a study in Mexico where there are one of the highest concentrations of native Americans.
I used to live in the area and the latinas were lovely and never caused any problems or refused to integrate unlike certain others…
I agree !
at the same time, integration isn't sticking to 'your people'.
@Answersonapostcard they are clearly not. They just had some shops with their traditional food. The issue is whether you're ok with redevelopment that prices out smaller non-global chain shops.
