he always says weird stuff like when he said he was lucky to look racially ambigous and that he doesnt see himself as asian so i am not surprised at all
His entire answer was that his entire life has been colored by things that are generally considered queer from music, theatre, and other facets of his life. He wasn't being insensitive or obtuse or even out of touch. As a gay man, I personally think his response was well thought out and sensitive to the topic, which was his response on being one half of a main series gay couple on network tv in the early 2010s, when it wasn't entirely common.
As a St Louisan, I have to comment. We are not all losers and idiots. One of the former high school teachers in our community is in the top 0.1% of onlyfans donations. Next time put some respect on that name.

I adore Darren. I went to one of his shows many years back. He’s ridiculously talented. He writes songs, plays guitar, plays drums, can dance, can sing, can act, and he’s the main reason I watched Glee (because I LOVED him on A Very Potter Musical). He seems like a beautiful and kind hearted guy. I completely understand criticizing the way he worded it, so he might want to find a different way to express his sentiment, but it’s clear with the context what he meant. Starkids unite! Lol Also, Amber is fantastic! She is hilarious, talented, and a great actor!

as a bisexual latin man from st louis, i hated and loved the callout, cause i moved to oakland/the bay area and learned so much about gay history that i didnt know, but also showed people from here that there are more than just truckers and trumpers in STL
i feel like all the stories i hear about lea michelle being a bitch take place between the time that cory died and before glee ended. i’m not trying to say your boyfriend dying gives you an excuse to treat everyone like shit, but i imagine that was probably one of the worst times in her life, if not THE worst time in her life. so idk, there is a part of me that wants to give her some grace for that.
It's more so that Cory kept her in check and probably held her accountable bts. She was literally at her best and most tolerable when they were together Once he passed, she didn't have that anymore.
There's an old interview Darren did with Tyler Oakley where he said his fear or pet peeve is being misunderstood, which is why he tends to overexplain things.
I only started watching Glee because I was obsessed with Starkid and A Very Potter Musical. I've still never watched the first season despite seeing the rest haha (Also bc I was starved for queer representation and we didn't have many options)
It’s funny that you chose that episode of Jenna and Kevin’s podcast because they both are still friends with her. They talk positive about her on their podcast. She’s also best friends with darren and Jonathan groff and Becca Tobin. I’m not a Lea fan but Kevin and Jenna have talked about how they hate that people try to pit their “family” against each-other. Jenna even wished her congratulations on her pregnancy.
Darren Criss feels culturally queer in a similar way someone like Michelle Visage feel queer. They're not but they have been in the sphere for so long and love so much that u just go yeah they queer too just by association lol.
I'm definitely not part of the "they're a perfect soul, they can do no wrong" crowd, because that's just unrealistic, but I also think that based on what I've seen from Darren for the past 13 years of following the guy's work and progress, you guys were right on the money and very much called things as they are. Darren predicted his words would get twisted and taken out of context in various media outlets, and that's exactly what happened. Glad you guys could see through that, and actually listened to his full response. More often than not, he's the kind of man who gives out very verbose, elaborate and thought out answers, just so he can be sure that no one truly misunderstands him. Not intentionally, at least.
I think Darren handled it well and is a legitimate ally. The main criticism I have is that it's a slippery slope. The same logic can be applied to RDJ in Tropic Thuder and nobody would stand behind him if he said he felt "culturally black"
I don’t think RDJ in Tropic Thunder is a fair comparison. RDJ’s character in Tropic Thunder is a comedy commentary on the lengths Hollywood will go to in order to NOT hire a black man for a black role. It’s meant to be funny and ridiculous. The punchline is that RDJ and his character have NO connection with the black experience. Darren Criss’s whole point is that while he isn’t gay, he has a strong connection with gay culture and wanted to use that to give a respectful portrayal.
I don’t think it’s at all a fair comparison between what Darren said and the hypothetical scenario of RDJ saying he felt culturally black because he played a white character doing blackface. Darren Criss grew up around queer people and has always been engrossed in the culture. Not to mention that it is way easier to pass as straight for a majority of queer people (not saying we should have to but it’s possible), than it is for black people since we can’t take off our skin or African features. RDJ didn’t grow up in Black culture. Even if he did, he will never experience what it feels to move through life as a black person everyday of his life, which has shaped a lot of black culture. If a white person grew up in black culture, is an ally, and understands that they don’t have the ability to speak for black people, then I have no problem with them saying they identify with black culture. I don’t think it’s a slippery slope at all as long as the visitor in a culture respects that cultures boundaries.
ok the phrasing of "culturally queer" is kinda crazy ngl and gives me a visceral reaction as a queer person bc i've met so many heteros that wanna be Cool & Gay SOOOOO BAD but then they have never heard of marsha p. johnson 😒 and MAYBE they know who keith haring is and like his artwork, but then they have zero concept of why it was and is so culturally significant. like straight ppl will really have one Gay Best Friend and then think they are entitled to a culture and a community they know nothing about. i do really like his full take in context, like i think he is really gettin at somethin and i am honestly glad that he was the one to play Blaine, he did a fantastic job in the role and tbh coulda fooled me. buuuuuuuuut i do kinda think he brought this backlash upon himself by wording it the way he did. mans has been mainstream famous for Years at this point, surely he knows that That's what the headline is gonna be and most people are not gonna read beyond that. like he could've just talked about how he has been around queer people and queer communities & culture since he was a kid, and how he was there when people around him were dying of AIDS, and he's glad he got to play Blaine etc etc. but maybe he's realizing where he went wrong now & hindsight is 20/20 🤷🏻
I think it's hard to give a good interview if you're constantly worried about being misinterpreted. He was genuine and enthusiastic, and it sounds like the people there appreciated that.
