they critiqued him for taken things out of context when the whole article is just them taking what he said out of context hahahaha
Pretty funny
That's untrue, he recently made an apology video for making up the stories
@@lukeshioshiodont know how thats relevant to what he commented
@@CandeedYams well, I do
@lukescioscio did you watch the video? It was barely an apology video and more of an explanation
Lesson learned: never talk to cops or media without lawyer and a recording devices.
this made me so mad lol. this is why people don't trust the media. why would they randomly make this hit piece on the guy. are we really at the point where we dont understand that comedians don't always 100% tell factual stories?
Tells jokes for a living, well I have nothing better to do with my life then fact check a comedian… like bro must of been miserable💀
No comedian invents stories for pity lmao, they invent stories for punchlines
They are not historians.
@@MrMiguelForsterit’s not “inventing a story”, it’s tweaking a story the really happened to make it punchier for a standup context. this may mean adding elements to make it funnier but it also means making it more dramatic etc as well, while still sticking to the core truth (which i believe he did). these dramatic elements can be used to better tell and leverage jokes while also helping the audience better see your perspective, which imo is the whole goal of comedy.
I feel like it’s political motivated. It feels like they’re attacking him because he’s a popular leftist
I was a writer for Hasan at Patriot Act, and I loved watching you react to that video and come to the conclusion that I think any reasonable person would. I've seen so many media and comedy people online who have their egos weirdly invested in hating Hasan or protecting the New Yorker. He's a nice, normal, funny guy, and this article was a malicious attempt to smear him. Hopefully his video puts it in the ground forever and lets him get on with his life.
Hey thanks for leaving the comment, appreciate the kind words.
It’s crazy how obvious it is with Hasan’s response, the scary thing is how easy it was to believe the New Yorker article (I did) without the response 😳
@@stanz Yeah, totally understandable! Just glad the truth is out there now.
That's awesome man! The Patriot Act was very entertaining.
No he’s unfunny and annoying. Write funnier things for a comedian
I'm continuously appaulled that the wider misunderstanding public tries to hold comedians, of all people, to any sort of bizarre journalistic integrity. It's pretty disgusting to watch as a lifelong fan of standup. "Yeah but they talk about politics seriously" - SO. FUCKING. WHAT. It's ALL under the umbrella of "comedy first", not "truth first". That's often conveniently ignored when these comedians are being unfairly attacked.
Comedians aren't under oath, they're supposed to make you exhale out of your nose while you drink your beer and worry about how you're gonna pay rent now that you spent $100 or more on tickets to a live comedy show plus $18 on a canned Guiness
I think the difference with the hassan bits is that the the parts he embellished weren’t to make the bit funnier but to make it sadder/“more racist”. The New Yorker is such fuckin ass though and should be ashamed for calling themselves a journal.
There’s a big difference between making up a story for a laugh and making up a story for sympathy
@@actionjaxon903 does he need to send you a personal invitation to his next special so you know it's comedy?
@@vn01 did you watch the special at all? A lot of the shit he “lied” / embellished about wasn’t to make it funnier but to make it more sympathetic. Which is a slight but still notable difference with how comedians usually lie about jokes. Now though, does he deserve to get cancelled or lose a job over it? Definitely not. At most it’s corny. But alot of comedians are corny Lol
socially conscious comedy has been a thing for a long time, and a lot of it is corny. it's literally nothing new besides being told from Hasan's POV this time. @@4purs
I can't believe they doubled down. You can't select parts of information to convey a narrative very far off-base then go "we were right, suck it up". I think the first point that he gave receipts for is honestly the most damning difference from the article, it borders on attempted character assassination. I have no idea how a professional could be told that the racism happened, have the girl be a part of his life and acknowledge that it happened, then edit the information to make it seem like he completely fabricated it and the woman was shocked to hear that he had made up this story. Genuinely probably a racist article author. I bet she says racism isn't real regularly.
I wish!!! The saddest part is that the woman who wrote the article is a well respected journalist, with amazing pieces in her name. I just can’t understand why she did this; it’s completely against her brand and is hurting her credibility.
I wish she would retract and provide an explanation for this character assassination (is that a word?) piece.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid the damage is done and I don’t think his video will reach all the people who read the article, read/saw the news about it or watched all the videos made about it. I also think this article has also harmed his career and costed him several opportunities.
Maybe he should sue The New Yorker and the journalist for financial and emotional damages.
It bears mentioning for those who don't know, Hasan's comedy (like most foreign and immigrant comedians in the US) is generally meant to convey a somewhat humorous version of the immigrant experience. In Hasan's case, the experience of Indians and Muslims in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Wait you are telling me that someone who might have checked out a Mosque for terror, wasn't roided out of his mind?
The New Yorker: "We didn't lie! One of our prominent witnesses is a former FBI agent whose entire job was lying. Obviously a credible source."
Hasan's show, the Patriot Act was incredibly good and was incredible for the amount of in-depth research they would do when covering any particular topic. Which is why I was so disappointed when this article came out. But even before Hasan's response came out, the difference between the expectations for what he talks about in shows like the Patriot Act vs his own stand up should be obvious. It just seems like the journalist has a story already in mind, even after sitting down with him. Thank god he had receipts
I sort of wonder if the reporter reached out for comment not expecting a response
That is insane journalistic hackery from the New Yorker. Actually quite despicable.
I love everyone just calling them "The New Yorker"
The New Yorker is such a dogshit publication
I was a longtime subscriber and fan of The New Yorker, this made me completely lose trust in them as an institution with integrity. Hasan deserves to be the new host of the Daily Show and I feel like this was a hit piece to prevent him getting the job.
Can he sue? The daily show should do a special on this
Just gotta say, videos like these are how reactionary type content can be used for good. I knew roughly about the Hasan issue, but I don’t think I would have normally dived much deeper into the content or checked out his video in full without this reaction guiding me there. But now here I am, wiser with just how conflated this story was becoming around the media spaces, and a lot more supportive over a person I had little care for prior 🥴
I had no idea about this situation, I appreciate this deep dive into it.
Yeah and I probably would've written it off as "oh there was some controversy with that guy" next time I heard his name, probably putting him in the same box, labeled 'problematic', as people who have done some monstrous shit that I didn't care about learning but heard rumours about. So I was really glad to watch this and now I'm even interested in seeing some of his stuff
Definitely seems like the article was always going to be a hit piece and the interview was just to get ammunition. I suppose it's not surprising given that he is someone who spends a good chunk of his time criticizing powerful people and institutions. It's a good thing he had receipts but unfortunately the corrections/retractions for these kind of things rarely get as much attention as the original stories.
Aptly put my friend
Begs the question, who owns The New Yorker? If they felt the need to take out Hasan in particular for no apparent reason. Maybe he stepped in their toes in the past somehow, who knows.
@@naimahmed3720 This! I'm pretty sure this one's way bigger than this Hasan situation.
I used to watch Patriot Act religiously in middle school. Hasan Minhaj is like one of the biggest reasons why I started to care about political issues around the world cause he explained them in a way where it's easy for even 12 year olds to sympathize with his stories, so reading this bad faith article was so annoying.
I can’t wait to learn about the controversy surrounding another person I’ve never heard of before in my life
“He selectively presents info and embellishes it to make a point: exactly what we reported” no that’s just exactly what you did. Selected specific quotes, spliced them together, and embellished them to make a point. A false point. I wonder if he could sue for slander or defamation. Especially if it costed him a job.
i was not at all invested in this beforehand, but seeing Hasan dunk on the media with receipts is so so satisfying. The sad thing is though, that if he didnt have recordings of everything people wouldn't really take him seriously.
if someone came up to you in the street and said I was shot in the leg and you said I’m sorry that happened to you is that proof that that person was shot in the leg because the racist parent story is like oh yeah, they told me to leave because I was racist too well the mom said that we were taking family photos and that I wasn’t welcome and I was like OK well, can the Mom speak to if this is true or not no well the daughter said she’s sorry that that happened to him. OK the daughter apparently wasn’t involved according to you, so why would her apologizing for something that you said happen make it real that’s what’s the most confusing you know hard for me to side with a newspaper, but it is crazy to doc somebody because you claim racism he did show their face he did give their address. They were docked and harassed and his proof is well she said sorry that happened to youOK is that proof that it’s true though
I’m ready for Hasan to do the most Hasan Minhaj thing ever and open his next special with a background monitor reading “stories are exaggerated for comedic effect”
meta fiction is a great tool for storytelling. The truth in a story is about how well feelings are conveyed to an audience that might not be able to relate, and it was done very well.
. my favorite Hasan Minhaj joke is when he told Jared Kushner to F off to his face in reality, he’s never met Jared Kushner that’s the best part I love I love heightening stories like that I love like when you know you say you go to the grocery store and someone’s like hi nice to meet you and you say somebody tried to kill me. I love that that’s hilarious. That’s the best part.
Yo A+ turnaround on getting the video up, very impressive.
Shoutout nathan, killer edit as always
@@stanz I thought the part where you responded to a chatter and only referred to them as chatter was offensive. I hope you apologize to them tomorrow if they come back to your stream.
This is like when a detective thinks they’ve caught a serial killer but the killings keep happening so they say it’s a copy cat killer
Just wait until these people find out Larry the cable guy isn't actually a cable guy
😳
😂
No this can’t be happening
not even remotely the same context
@@jagonski Great way to show you don't understand comedy, which was the point of my joke, well done
Dam, new yorker really just said "yeah we did the research, trust us bro" after they got a shit ton of receipts thrown at their face
in 2014 they ran a hit piece on my mentor, completely blind-siding her. Misrepresenting "events" as permanent facts, offering innuendo and slander as valid perspectives from powerful people embarrassed by her truth telling ... People still mischaracterize her based on this one hit piece's rumour-milling. Awful stuff.
This is why it still baffles me that news articles never actually show their sources. They just say, we have sources, trust us bro. Like it’s literally hammered into us in school to list sources in our research papers or we’ll get a 0 for making shit up
The whole thing stank of a racist hit piece right out the gate, I made earlier comments to that effect elsewhere. Ive watched plenty of comedians who embellish things and not just for goofy reasons but to do some dark comedy about serious stuff, yet when it comes down to stories about what Muslims go through in the US suddenly these are dangerous damaging lies and you should just be quiet about them? Now he dropped all these receipts its frankly proven my original impression more than right, its a racist hit piece and an absolutely disgusting excuse for reporting.
@chankston7954 i mean if you watched the video, every single thing you talk about is disproven, mate you are just talking gibberish at this point, the only thing i agree with you is that people under 40 have never really faced a life threatening situation but the chances of the threat being there wasn't 0. nobody is denying that exaggeration wasn't the part of his comedy, but you are now acting like he exaggerated a lot which is simply not true, its ironic that you are criticising him for exaggeration but you yourself are doing the same thing, not every Muslim faced racism post 9/11 in the US but a good chunk of them did depending on where they lived
@chankston7954awful take
ngl, this heavily diminished my opinion of the New Yorker. IDK what their biases are, but the defense was compelling and their doubling down reminds me of a racist caught in being racist and just doubling down with idiocy, though idk if its racism or something else in this case.
@chankston7954 Sure.... but his rant was about how a "respectable" magazine doing a hit piece on him, which it clearly was. They published that piece right around the time he was being considered for the "daily show". Coincidence? I think NOT....
holy shit this lady HATES him. that was a full on hit piece. and when he comes with the best goddamn receipts i've ever seen she doubles down?????? holy shit????
As a person with no context outside of this video and zero legal knowledge is it possible that The New Yorker put out a statement affirming the article because if they backpedaled it could be used as them admitting to it being untrue. This admission then could be used in a legal case against The New Yorker on the grounds of slander as Hasan had his reputation and character damaged including his chance at a great job.
This article feels like it was written by Bethany's parents right after Hasan got rejected from prom
This really showscases the danger of misinformation in journalism and bias
As a brown Muslim, I’m upset that our experiences with racism are still being discredited. I’m upset with the New Yorker
Wait - are people really thinking that comedians are just being 1000% truthful in their work. I mean that’s plain ridiculous.
Cringe reporter, allowed for a fire response though.
The mixture of comedy and news has always unnerved me because with comedy I'm cool with lying, with news I'm not. I've noticed with the daily show, and others its not always clear what is news and what is a joke. Its not like the onion where its all a lie but demonstrates a deeper truth.
The fact he had to make a well produced entire video to prove that he didn't tell the absolute truth in his COMEDY SPECIAL , just sounds like insanity to me.
I understand that what he was presenting could have been showing a group in a worst light or devaluing true stories, but that's not a new thing in comedy
It is a critique that (more than most comedy) is based in some known truth, to make people laugh, but also think about those subjects.
The New Yorker really wanted to close out 2023 telling the world "we're unreliable af"
wait so apparently fact checking jokes from comedians is journalism now?
I feel like the new yorker used more embellishment in their telling of the interview then Hasan did in any of the specials.
You know journalism is at an all time low when they're writing 5000 word essays on how the stories comedians tell arent 100% truthful.
Didn’t even know this was going on, but what a horrible response by the New Yorker. Never read it, but definitely going to avoid it now. It really did feel like the writer was hell bent on destroying Hasan’s career. “Journalism” needs to hold itself accountable when it fails to report the actuality of events. Life is F’d because “news” outlets use their platforms not to pass on insightful information but subjective op-Ed’s.
Thanks for covering this Stanz. I was also 'Team New Yorker is cringe' but wasn't sure if I was missing some angle.
Hassan's story adjustments were all understandable and did not change the core matters.
The New Yorker's article was misleading and DID change the core matters.
Good on ya Stanz for actually listening to this. I wasn't 100% on board but as someone who has been in those basements and made embellishments to my "stand-up" (10 min sets) I always take the side of the comedian for the most part. Good to see some good context and input from someone who gets it.
I love when someone claps back with receipts. It feels so good to know people have integrity with what they do. Hasan made a banger of a video :)
The New Yorker was just speaking their emotional truth on the interview they did, we can’t just go into news expecting everything to be entirely fact based and not spiced up for entertainment purposes. That’s what their article was trying to convey… right?
Then that becomes libel and opens them up to a lawsuit
The core difference being that where Hasan kept the true essence of the story and spiced it up to highlight the themes already present in the original story, the new Yorker took things out of context to twist the narrative
The reporter literally did to him exactly what happened to Fred in the live action Scooby doo movie
Absolutely love how this video wasnt just watching the video and laughing or saying some "ooo"'s and "ahhh"'s and was a genuine analysis and your persobal input
never let the truth get in the way of a good story
Staniel. This was soooo good. Sorry I’ve been missing your infectious enthusiasm. Much love ❤️
Great react man. Awesome concise and did not interrupt the video unnecessarily. New sub and fallow!
As someone who has thought Minaj was mid as a performer, Fuck The New Yorker for making me side so hard with someone I was previously lukewarm about.
Emotional truths, also historically understood as myths (defined by the Ancient Greeks as something that has never happened, but also happens all the time)
This was a great video!!! I did not realize that comedians always made up stories but I even I as a regular person do embellish stories sometimes (didn't realize everyone did that) so this makes sense. I find the New Yorker article to be completely manipulative and misleading!
The interviewer was listening to music in the background while talking to him. That should say how important they thought his side of the story was.
Idk if the views just haven’t updated yet, but Stanz has 20k likes on 22k views. That’s insane engagement. Good shit Stanz. Happy for you
I appreciate your break down of this, id just suggest in the future learning how to pronounce you subject's name, especially when its been an active part of their publicity
Im so glad you broke this down because I saw his video but didn't know anything about the scandal so I didn't watch it. Im glad to know now and agree, team New Yorker cringe.
When he pulled the interview recording you know the receipts would deliver
that New Yorker article truly is outrageously long
Not a huge fan of his but I respect a man with receipts.
I've always thought to record important conversations when it's legal and relevant, like an interview or public statement, so I don't have to rely on the other party to hand over unedited audio. Luckily, I won't ever be famous, so it's likely that I'll never need to do this, I just think about it often.
@@trashtrash2169 same. I also always record calls with customer service peeps. It came in handy a couple times when I got straight up lied to
They didn't want him to host the daily show.
i need a caanths voice overlay for this
Apparently the response the author posted on Twitter wasn’t even written by them, but a corporate spokesperson
The response actually goes so fucking hard, especially since The New Yorker had me convinced I should be angry at this guy for some reason!! Thank god he had such a strong need for vindication otherwise I definitely wouldve forgotten about it still thinking he fabricated stories of racism
I hope everyone shocked that comedians exaggerate for comedic effect will be ok when they learn that santa isn’t real, their mom was the tooth fairy, and stripper poles rotate in place.
Wait, stripper poles rotate? I feel like the last dredges of my trust in humanity has left me now😢
He’s learning! Stanz did the Vsauce intro!!
Now that is how you bring receipts.
can't believe he lost the daily show over nothing
The reporter seems like me during a literature exam combining quotes from like 3 pages apart but including a little ... To represent that some parts were skipped and pretending that makes my theories valid.
Someone who wanted the daily show job or didn't want him, was definitely behind this.
What's really frustrating about all of this is that the NYer reporter fell into the trap of blurring the line between facts and reportage and comedy and storytelling. We need more clarity for sure, but reporters have a different job from comedians. Comics make things up all the time because their job is to be funny.
Even more seriously, it feels to me like a takedown/hit piece of someone taking on systematic racism using what is perceived as errors as a way to discredit him. The other thing that comes to mind is that Hasan Minhaj ripped into the press on several occasions and as life is like high school this article is a chance to take him down a peg or two.
Hope he gets the job at The Daily Show he deserves it.
first: great way to present it Stanz! very much liked how you led into the story and showed every side of it.
second: like wtf media, I am always astonished on how much media lies and pieces sentences together to get the point across which they want. they even stood by everything they said after his explanation video?! Insane... and why even write such an article, the reporter has to have a personal beef or something.... stupid and very unprofessional!
third: watch the Candece Owens Docu "Convicting a Murderer" and maybe do a piece on it, I think it's crazy what the media does, she shines a lot of light onto this case! worth the watch!
Damn Stanz this is a really good video
I never knew he was considered a comedian
Dont comedians tell "this really happened' stories all the time that arent meant ot be taken seriously? This is par for the course when it comes to comedic storytelling. Ive seen hundreds of comedians, IRL and specials, they tell these outlandish stories ALL THE TIME and every time they start with something like "and im not shitting you, this guy..." or "This REALLY happened!", Ive never once left one of those shows and been like, "yeah that guys cousin definietly met barack obama at a strip club before he was president"
As someone who does political comedy I think Hasan should be held to a higher standard of truth in comedy. That said, it seems like he’s done an excellent job of doing that.
New Yorker cringe
The fact that they doubled down is absolutely insane
The chat comment at 19:40 really made me laugh
Stanz the kind of guy to have read the hunger games books
More of a maze runner guy 💅
This is a well built video. Leading us in with you. I like it

And the double down??? Insane. Absolutely bonkers
I love how chat is saying this is his 6th take
Dude the New Yorker is so cringe wtf
It amazes me that people think half the shit comedians say is true.... It's done to make you laugh. Take you from the mundane and laugh at the insane. If they're true. That's cool. But if not who the hell cares. He's cultivated an audience who finds him funny. That's great. Good for him.
Why is Stanz so dripped out 🫦
damn he demolished that article god damn
This whole Hasan Minhaj thing is weird, I don’t expect comedians to go on stage and give personal stories with 100% truth, names change and stories might be embellished a bit or changed a bit for the funnies, which is what I want. If I want news or a auto biography I’ll look for that. The whole situation is kinda wild.
I work in media and it's true that journalists have to pick quotes, omit insignificant details and generalize, otherwise they'll end up with a long sheet of unreadable mess. But, if the New Yorker really left out that much important context, they just failed. I can't imagine publishing something that distorted in good faith and considering it good journalism.
Also, her tone in the phone call is what I would call "I'm calling you to check out that "hear out the bad guy's side" box and proceed to publish the story" voice. Not a good look.
New Yorker cringe: After Hasan makes his response with "yes, I have altered the stories to make them more exciting and funny, but the core of the story is still true", their response seems to be "See, he selectively presents information to make a point", however they refuse to see how they themselves are selectively presenting information in their article to make a point. The goal for Hasan? Make a funny story. The goal for New Yorker? Spread hate towards a comedian to get more clicks on their article. Hasan directly responds to the accusations from the article, with recordings of the interview and screenshots from mail conversations, while New Yorker doesn't directly answer to his accusations, they just say "we interviewed the woman of his prom-story", but don't elaborate on their accusation on "She had initially interpreted the invitation as an attempt to rekindle an old friendship, but she now believes the move was meant to humiliate her".
Isn't New Yoker doing the same¿😂
Tbh his response is the most goated taking responsibility apologize and explaining why the article is bullshit
IMO Someone was pissed Hasan was getting the gig hosting Daily Show and decided on a smear campaign to tank his deal. This incident showed me people have no understanding about nuance in comedy as a form of entertainment AND advocacy.
WHAT A CHAD FUUUUUDGE
They literally lied about him and intentionally left out proof of his side of things.
That newspaper has gone from a popular read among intellectuals and the social elite to a fireplace lighter, that should be replaced by gpt-technology, pretty fast.
I think that’s one of your best videos Stanz
Thank you!!
I feel like this must be cause for defamation, given what was written in the article and what was recorded from the phone call. They (seemingly) intentionally misrepresented what he said, and left out key context to make things appear differently. If that's not defamation i dont know what is.
Also, the new yorker must have only made that tweet because they knew it would be defamation if they admitted that they misrepresented him. They must be covering their arse by doubling down and saying that it's how they understood what he told them in the interview.
Usually comedians embellish to make something funnier, not more serious. That article clearly took things out of context, but that doesn't mean what he did was OK. Two wrongs and all that.
No, he did actually embellish his stories to make them funnier and/or more interesting to the audience. It doesn't change the level of seriousness. Case in point, the anthrax scare is serious in real life. His presentation of it just conveyed the seriousness better. If he told the story as it happened, he would just paint his wife as someone overly naggy. He explains this in the video, come on. It's not like he actually changed the resolution here. The conclusion in real life and in his story is that they realised it's fake anthrax but there's a true danger of it being real so they beefed up their security. Changing the seriousness would be Hasan actually lying and saying that it was real anthrax.
Next thing I know, you'd tell me is that Anthony Jesselnik has never actually dropped a baby in his life. What a disappointment!
He was so singled out, it's not like they looked into one comedy special but multiple things that were either political comedy or storytelling comedy without distinction. They never fact check other comedians do they? Is artistry and comedy really this dead that he can't take artistic liberties to STORY TELL.
Bring back the stanz show?
He should honestly sue, or this women should lose her job for writing a crappy article Smfh.
The New Yorker just straight up attacked him.
