I'm coming at this from a different perspective & that is the HUGE benefit to getting PIP Disability With a Diagnosis. So I'd say for many of us it's not just a piece of paper. With all the emotional aspects (anxiety) of having to sit before an appeal board and try to explain why you "sound and express" yourself so well. My Assessing place was "Bristol Dyslexia Centre" By an Dr Wendy Who has a PhD in neurodiversity. So I was lucky. She took a full history; including the psychological. She is an Educational psychologist. They also CAN allow you to pay half now & the rest on day of assessment. I asked her :"what about afterwards - what will I do to adjust?" I am to see one of their specialists. I could no longer work full time as an RGN due to it not being a suitable environment for me with all the equipment one can drop; bump into plus all the huge stresses of organising and talking as we do things= impossible to do for me This is why I went into Disability payments. I now hope to find a very different kind of job; now I know. So for me a diagnosis Coming mot just from my background in general nursing but from a very intelligent family has been incredibly vital and though £550(in 2019) I could have had it paid for ; apparently; had I gone onto University.
Judith Mendelsohn Hello. Glad to hear that you are getting somewhere with this. I’m trying to work out which is the right discipline for my year 7 secondary child? My child was assessed for dyslexia as fitted ‘some’ of profile but mostly not. The assessment indicated possible dyspraxia. Can GP’s refer to educational psychologists? His difficulties relate more to school work that his gross and fine motor skills, although in baby, toddler/early years his sitting up was late and crawling didn’t happen. All these different disciplines who can assess is bewildering to me as a parent. At the crux of it, it’s more for him about getting the appropriate support with school work and self esteem. His writing speed is well below average, but his vocabulary and encyclopaedic knowledge is high. Overwhelmed.com.
