In this video, I do an in-depth look at the differences between the 7 PRC and 28 Nosler - the newest 7mm cartridges around! In this video we start with a brief overview of the 28 Nosler and 7 PRC. We then look at the similarities between the 28 Nosler and 7 PRC, and there are definitely several! We highlight three main differences between the 28 Nosler and 7 PRC before wrapping up with four main criteria to make the choice between the 28 Nosler and 7 PRC. - Спорт
I have one of each both Bergara rifles. With factory ammo I got substantially less speed out of both than advertised. 7 PRC was 2864 and 28 Nosler was 2975. The PRC advertised 3,000 with a 175 ELDX and the 28 advertised 3125 with a 175 ABLR. Both fell considerably short. I literally just finished up load development for the PRC and will be taking it to the range in the next week or so. I'm getting ready to start for the 28 Nosler as well. I did acquire 8 lb of RL 33 for the 28, I cannot find RL26 anywhere. I loaded up Retumbo, 4831 SC and RL 22. Fingers crossed 🤞
I’ve had some decent success with Ramshot grand and N565 in the 7mm PRC with 175 ELDX with velocities in the mid 2900’s.

28 Nosler is the king but Hornaday is king when it co.ea to marketing.

I never could warm to a Hornady cartridge or ammo. They have always underperformed , their 7mm 162 grain interlock bullet is pure garbage. It blew up on a 200 yard Mulie and a 150 yard elk using my M70 7mm rem mag. The ammo also chrono'd low by 200 fps. I used it because it was the only ammo my rifle would shoot half decently.
How do the 2 compare at 400 to 500 yards on big game? I think the PRC catches up?
Have you actually chrongraphed a 7 prc at the range or are you going off of hornady stated velocities?
Not that I used in this video. The data here is strictly what is available from Hornady. A few guys I shoot with use a 7 PRC and have gotten loads similar to what Hornady publishes.
The reason I avoid using hand load data in videos is I’m trying to avoid introducing any bias of a specific barrel, rifle, or load being faster than another. The trade off is that if load data or published numbers are inaccurate, the video information is inaccurate. But if I use chronograph info it almost always will vary from rifle to rifle.
If you’d like to see more chronograph details in the videos I definitely can moving forward!
Reason I asked, hornady is 150-200 fps slower with the 175's using FACTORY ammo than their 3000 fps claim. In reloads, the you tuber "reloading weatherby" chrongraphed both factory and hand loads for tge 7 prc. Then chronographed the 7 rem mag. The rem mag in hand loads with the same bullet weight was 100 fps faster than the hand loads of the 7 prc using the same bullets and same powder. Basically the 7 mm rem mag is 100 fps faster than the prc.... not exactly in line with hornady claims on velocity with factory ammo. 2800, vs 3000.
@@thehardieway hornady address this on Ron Spomer outdoors. Seth from Hornady talked to Ron alot about having to use alternative Powder because there main two (Backfire podcasts said Reloader 26 and H1000 as second choice) where dryed up and they wanted to keep shelves stocked so they used a Ball powder (Staball HD is likely). Seth from Hornady also said they go for consistent loads for different guns they test and velocity second. It was a bad move not telling public earlier and stating on a box of Factory ammo there is a different power is used and things to change (velocity and point of aim with the load and new power)
Love my 28 nolser yes it has short barrel life and i love my 7prc but if a few of my friends and i were to choose itd be the 28 nosler. Ive been talking to gun shops in my area and the barrel makers 28 nosler is picking up yes they said 7prc off the bat is taking big sales but 28 nosler has picked up and beats both the 7prc and the 300 prc so yes 28 nosler is my choice of better ballistics

I've read, and researched this topic for a year. I'm a 7mm guy. My elk rifle is a 7Rum, which I roll my own for and I love it. I want to buy another rifle and thought I wanted a 7prc, but I started seeing true, chronographed velocities were not matching Hornady's claims. Long story, short, I think that the 7prc is just a larger version of the 6.5 creedmoor.
I’ve heard varying reports on 7 PRC velocities as well. I don’t have a 7 PRC myself, and lean on a few friends of mine who shoot them. They are handloading and have been able to hit velocities that match hornadys load data, but I have no personal experience with their loaded ammo.
@@stienfamilyoutdoors Same here. 2900's is about what handloaders are getting with max loads. Accuracy seems spotty also. I wonder if Hornady was having issues and changed the recipe to retain accuracy. It's still a fine round, just a little disappointed after all the hype.
My Savage 28 Nosler has a 1 in 8.4 twist😊
More and more companies are starting to offer faster twists in some of these cartridges!

Ammo manufacturers used Reloader 26 for top velocity but even they can't find it anymore. Substitute powder falls 100 + fps short.
The 7MM PRC has the same performance as the 7MM WSM and the 7 MM Rem Mag. 7MM Weatherby, 6.8 Western Etc. It's chambered in a Std long action so long bullets can be seated out. Same as if you chamber a 7WSM in a long action. But the 28 Nosler is the Hotrod if you get one. I don't mind belts, I would get a 3.8" mag action and rebarrel fo 7RM, Seat out long bullets/ Chase the lands. 20 to 3 in ammo availabillity
My Xbolt long range rifles in 28 nosler and 7 mag both have 1-8” twist barrels from browning. Both beat the 7 prc, I do hand load , but I don’t see much difference between a 7 prc and the 280 ai, there’s no replacement for displacement 😊
It’s an interesting change to see more and more rifles being factory produced with the non-SAAMI barrel twist. Fortunately there isn’t a huge risk of having too fast a twist on 7mm - not like you’d see with a .224 caliber
Check case cap. There isn't much dif between 7PRC, 7RM, 7WSM, 7 Wby, 280 AI a bit less. But the 28 Nosler a Hotrod. I won't go the 28 Nosler, Just a 7RM in a Mag 3.8" Action. Same performace as the 7PRC but 20-3 ammo availabillity. I don't mind belts. MIght build a 28 Nosler in that 3.8" Action and forget about the retoricSeat out 180-200 Grns 7mm bullets to my hearts content.👍
@@WillyK51 - I’m with you on belts not being a concern and like your idea of loading the 7RM long. I have a 300 Win Mag that has a long throat and a long mag box from the factory and I handload to just over 3.6”
So wich better for longe range hunting ? Wich hits harder at long range ?
If you’re using the same bullet, the 28 Nosler will always be flatter and hit harder due to its powder capacity.
Now if you do something like a 140 grain bullet in the 28 Nosler and shoot a 175+ for the PRC, eventually the PRC will overtake the 28 Nosler in energy and trajectory.
Shoot a custom chamber, barrel Nosler with 195's...no comparison.

I think you were trying to sell us on the Nosler just a little too hard.
I think the 20% added recoil IS significant and will change a lot of shooters minds in favour of the PRC.
It just might - will depend on the shooter and rifle weight. Personally, I don’t notice much in the way of recoil differences once it gets to a certain level.
And I will admit, I have a bias towards the 28 Nosler. I think it’s about the perfect hunting cartridge if you don’t care about barrel life or cost of ammo.

On paper you would think they are somewhat similar. However in my real life tests... They are extremely different. I max out with my 24 inch barrel with a 175 ELD-X at 2800 FPS with H1000 in 7mm PRC. With the 28 Nosler I'm testing (24inch) barrel... I'm getting 3100 FPS with H1000.
Thanks for providing your experience! I love my 28 Nosler, and get some awesome velocities out of it, but don’t have personal real world experience with the 7 PRC.
I’m not surprised to hear about inflated numbers from a manufacturer, but those are significantly lower than Hornady lists in their reloading content! Unfortunate to see.
How many grains of powder in the 7prc. What primer?

BC’s and FPS are the only things that matter when making a comparison between these. When you say the 28 has to set the bullet deeper in the case it uses capacity which it does but it has the capability to spare. 7 prc sets the bullet farther outside the shoulder which it does but the 28 still has more capacity. I have both and the 7rem mag which will run with the prc. Neither will run with the 28.
If you just got to, 7mm-08 is the better choice! I’m a 6.5 creedmoor man myself!

7 PRC is a cool idea. Only I think something is wrong with its design? Why? From what I've seen online, the 7 PRC falls short on claimed velocities! 3000fps? No way! Many rifle velocities fall below 2900fps, closer to 2800! What's up with that? Also, accuracy seems to be less than stellar. Several tests show that the 6.8 Western is better. Something seems off with 7 PRC? Ask why Hornady refuses the load 6.8 Western? It might rain on their 7 PRC parade? I was going to build a 7 PRC and even purchased 100 rounds of factory ammo. Until I became aware of the 7 PRC hype! Perhaps these people online reporting all of this are wrong? But all of them? Obviously, the 7 PRC is decent, but until I see better performance reports, it's not for me😢
I think it's a combination of 3 things mainly 2
1. Hornady ( like many ammo makers) embellished their numbers in order to look better especially against rival cartridge they seems to hate the 6.8 Western
2. Barrel lengths, I personally looked at every major rifle maker and for 7PRC 22 and 24 are the standards anything longer is quite hard to find and when you do it usually a upper tier model aka your gonna pay for it, rather weird for a magnum cartridge
3. ( The lesser one possibly) This chambering is quite precise near custom, thing is with that any amount of play and you will lose performance, also believe the twist rate could be affecting this as well
Hornady address this in a question just like yours in their comments on a pod cast. Basically, they developed original loads with a couple of good powders (backfire podcasts said Reloader 26 and Second was H1000). Backfires first few boxes over a year ago where running 2950 to 2980 just under 3000, his current boxes are running 2800's as you said. Well, after the first couple runs of ammo, when it first came out, the powder supply dried up, and an alternative power had to be used (Also, I saw the ball powder out of pulled ammo and it is Staball HD). Hornady said they did not want empty shelves so the alternative powder (Staball HD) was loaded, and accurate loads were lower velocities, then original loads with the first two choices of powder (RL 26, H1000). You can look back on Hornady comment on those podcasts to customers.
Not here to defend Hornady - the guys I hunt with who are shooting the 7 PRC are hitting close to 3k with 175s on their handloads and getting great accuracy. I can’t comment on factory ammo because I actually don’t know anyone who is actively shooting it.
Getting rite at 3000 fps with both my 7prc..26 inch barells .31 to .40 groups light recoil with 7 inch can.love it I don't like 28 n. Because I don't like there ammo hard to find and short barell life ...7prc isvwinner in my book
I'm running a 1-8" twist 20" with 180 eldm n560 and getting 2857 es of 15 SD of 6.7 adv for 9 rounds 3 shot strings ..... barrel has only 75 rounds thru it. Wilson barral
7rum should be in this conversation. And for that matter 7mm is better then the prc in many ways to start with
But at what cost? You need at least a 28in barrel and burn over 90+gr of powder to see its true potential, it’s the reason the 28 nosler is the 7mm king because it can give you close to 7rum performance, still not as powerful, but with less powder, barrel length and barrel wear. It’s bad on the 28 nosler, it’s atrocious on the 7rum…

Fair point on ammo availability today. It’s been interesting to see the 6.5 Creedmoor become so much more available in recent years. I wonder if any of the PRCs will see similar popularity?

Too many guys crying about the muzzle velocities and forget about down range,retumbo is also a good choice . I shootbthe 162 gr eldx with retumbo and love the prc, i onlybshoot a 22 in barrel out of my savage 110 ultralite bought just for western hunting for less weight and im extremly happy

Hard to throw stones at the 7 rem mag. I like my 280 Ackley for a lightweight setup and my 28 Nosler for when I want some more zip!

@@Dave-cf2ng no it does not. You are delusional. A fully formed 7 mag case is 88 grains of water. A 26” barrel can push a 180 low drag bullet more than 3100 fps. I push a 175 in a 22” at 3036

The 28 Nosler is KING! and 28 Nosler is a 1:8 Twist! Everyone out there is using 195 gr Berger bullets on the 28 Nosler so what are you talking about 1:9 twist and shooting lighter bullets?
28 Nosler SAAMI spec is a 1:9 twist. So that’s why you’ll see factory rifles in 1:9 twist, and factory ammo will be sold to be compatible in a 1:9 twist rifle. You are starting to see more 1:8 factory rifles, and some in 1:8.5 being chambered as well. I think if Nosler had to do it over again, they would have gone through SAAMI with a 1:8 twist.
When you get up to the 195 Berger, it is very advantageous to use a custom rifle and push your COAL to 3.7” or more with a custom chamber. When I was having mine built, we talked about pushing COAL to nearly 4” but started to run into magazine difficulties with the Model 70 donor I was wanting to use.
Wow have you looked on the shelf at 28 nosler ammunition 175 ablr 175 eldx. The Cva is the only rifle that I’ve seen that’s a 9 twist every other is 8:4 or 8:5 which shoots great. I have all 3 of the 7 mm. 7 rem 9 twist 22” barrel 7prc. 8 twist 22” barrel and a 28 nosler 8:4 twist 24”. And the prc has the slowest fps of all 3 shoots great just can’t get the fps they claim.
175 ELDX can be found by some of the more boutique companies, but Hornady loads the 162 ELDX for the 28 Nosler. Christensen Arms is another that uses the 1:9 twist.
My 28 Nosler custom build has a 1:8 twist, and I’m sure if Nosler had to do it over they would have had the cartridge standard with a 1:8 twist.
@@stienfamilyoutdoorsmine is a saami chamber and a berger 195 .015 off lands is 3.648”. Lot of guys throat them out but you dont need to. Besides the 180 is a better bullet hunting under 1000 yrds. Drive them 100 fps faster than the 195.
Go ahead and buy a 28 nosler instead of cutting down 7 prc and i will continue to feed myself while on carnivore diet for free and you can buy a warehouse full of barrels trying to prove up the 28 and going hunggry. And if you seat a 7 prc into any powder you dont have accurate information or you need training in reloading before your and your followers get servely hurt. I rebarreled and old 7mm to prc at 27 inches 1 in 7 twist 2980 fps is most accurate at 2500 yards and down with 175s. Learn what you need to know not what verybody is not learning.
Good to know the 7 PRC is rocking infinite barrel life! If you treat both the same, I doubt you’re getting better than double the barrel life. Now, I’m shooting my 28 Nosler like a speed demon, but I’m totally okay with having 1/2 - 1/3 the barrel life of a 7 PRC.
I don’t think I ever mentioned bullets impeding on the 7 PRC powder column, but they definitely do on the 28 Nosler if using 175+ grain bullets loaded to SAAMI length for a SAAMI chambered barrels. 7 PRC can have the opposite problem with lighter bullets of being loaded to a shorter COAL than SAAMI to maintain neck tension. That isn’t really the purpose of a 7 PRC, but it’s important for folks to know how they intend to use a rifle before they choose a cartridge.
