After accidentally murdering several begonias (both cane and rex), I figured it out 😀 Lechuza pon (or similar smaller pon), slow release fertiliser and most importantly: a self-watering pot. I couldn´t understand their watering, but pon and a self-watering pot is what they love and grow and bloom like mad in it. 60 % of humidity is more than fine for my begonias. I have never seen a variegated Maculata - ohh, now that I know, I need to find it 😀
If you love the look of these but not the price tag, go for a Pink Maculosa. Similar to the Maculata, not variegated, but beautiful less of a Prima Donna. High humidity, tons of indirect bright light (similar to a Calathea White Fusion), never let it dry out. It’s a heavy feeder and fast grower.
Thanks for the shout out Chris! How cool. So far all my begonias are super happy in pure tree fern fiber, 85% humidity and 75-80 degrees inside the grow cabinets. They need a lot of cal/mag like alocasias and never let them dry down past a 4 on the moisture meter or the leaves get really cranky and curly. Can’t wait to pump up the new begonia with Leaf Lux all winter and then prop in the spring 🥳
I have this Ginny and withlacoochie variegated. Game changers in my collection journey!!!! It took me out of the Aroid world and expanded my passion for plants. I really like your taste in plants. Look at you starting trends! ❤
Had mine in the same pot for five years. It's not a Ginny Galaxy just a normal polka dot. Same normal potting mix very bushy about three feet high. Flowering right now. I let it dry out completely then I completely water it thoroughly with a liquid fertilizer. It's outside under a covered pergola. I live in a Mediterranean climate in South Australia. It's tough as old boots. Sometimes plants thrive on a little tough love
Maculata is different from the 'angel wing' canes that are hardy and people commonly grow. Maculata are buggers haha, they want high humidity... I grow lots of rare delicate species begonia and I prefer them to maculata lol! Possibly because it not only spent about a year slowly dying but it also introduced PM to my collection and wiped out some really rare stuff...aargh 🤣
Collecting begonias is my thing! Some need a lot of humidity like the ones out of southeast Asia but Maculata will do fine in lower humidity. They need fast drying medium, no over watering and drying out in between- like most aroids. the difference is you can get away with neglecting aroids as they will bounce back when atended to…. At least most of the time. Begonias are very sensitive to that and will die fairly fast. letting them sit dry even a couple days will kill them. Same if they are wet for a day too long, they rot right away. So yeah they can be non forgiving but they are sooo pretty 🤩 … did you know theres even holographic begonias?
That plant is on my gotta have wish list. I first saw it on Steve's Leaves. I'm sure it's the same one. I gotta have it. ❤❤❤. I grow my begonias in leca self watering in 50 to 70 percent humidity. 😊
Cane begonias are my jam! I have hundreds of cuttings and 6 to 7 plants for both a type of angel wing and looking glass (its silver whatever it is) I need to add this pretty for sure! Even normal begonia.. never had issues with them. i just prefer the look to the cane ones. I don't really do anything special? average humidity. Any cuttings i just toss in a vase with water. My mother plant I had behind a door in the sun room and it was always cool and beat up and still thrived. I sold that plant a few years back and kept cuttings (it was 3 ft tall at that time)
The variegated maculata is super rare because it was a sport that came from one plant. That was years ago. I love begonia, but variegated will break your heart like my millions of variegated red congos that have reverted. 😂
I am so scared to press play in the video because I can't put another plant I absolutely need on my wish list 🙈🙈🙈 Edit: omg a pink variegated maculata. I need it.
I'm hesitant to believe the colors online to many people are using filters to make them more vibrant or just change them all together. I've never had trouble with cane begonias but rex begonias always die on me. My cane begonia is in regular house humidity and I let it mostly dry between waterings tho it seems to be thirstier than most other plants. When I water I always let it sit in water for a few hours so it can get a good drink. It sits in a south east window. Its very happy and easy to care for.
As long as I leave my begonias alone they do fine, once I start paying attention to them they die down. My biggest love that I wish I could figure out how to grow is Homalomena I am on my third kill lol. Also for some reason cuprea hates me too
I don't think beconia maculata is rare because I saw that Ikea has sold it. I don't think Ikea sells anything rare! It's price was 10 euros. Of course that was the non-variegated version.
Naweed is legit, but from what I heard from friends there had been issus in the past. I have never bought from him personnally He is from France and I often see him on FB, he has is own groupe and stuff like that, more popular in Europe 😊
I can afford $2500 for a plant but there is no way I would ever spend that. I will wait for it to come down in price or just live without it. I'd been after an Anthurium carlablackiae for a while but even a tiny seedling was selling for almost $200. By sheer luck, I managed to get a sprouted seed for $69 and I will do the work of growing it and hoping it is a nice one. If it isn't, I didn't pay that much for it.

I am loving my Pink Maculosa. I tried and tried to to make it work with my Maculata to no avail.

I'm in NZ and just purchased a variegated begonia Rogue. It's awesome 👍

Your videos always lots of information 💙 Love from India 💙.

I never thought I’d say it, but I have been getting into begonias lately. I got a variegated Ginny Galaxy cutting in a trade the other day.
Love the variegation, but I would kill it!! Have a great weekend!! See next video!!!
OMG thank you for becoming a channel member Elizabeth!!!!! I appreciate it so much!!!
Ive never wanted a begonia so bad in my life
Intresting 😂 I had to give mine away because it didn’t have the will to survive In my jungle 😅
Begonias are so incredibly easy to grow and propagate.

What brand of Leca do you use and where do you purchase it?

Naweed is a legit seller. many times his pictures are stolen and used by scammer though. but thats not his fault.
(I got plants from him myself)
I’ll stick with my unvariegated begonia for now 😅
naweed is legit!
🤔 I’m going to start trying to figure out how to pollinate my bat wing begonia to see if I can get a variegated baby
$18 at my local plant/flower shop
Not variegated
My bagonia in my terrarium is doing well
