Back to model building after a forty year gap. Even with a magnifying glass my eyesight isn't good enough for this kind of detail but still enjoying it and your videos
Great tutorial! Nice to see the addition of the wire, little touches like that make it even better. I did the same with the 1/16 scale figure I'm doing now, including the headset wires.
Thank you very much - I'm glad you appreciate! Cheers 🍻
Just finishing my sherman model. So useful! Highly appreciated.
Perfect! I'm so glad to hear it 👍
Just what i needed with working on my Panther
Alright! 👍
solid tutorial Hank! really came out a treat mate!
Thanks man! Really appreciate it 🍻
Another great tutorial Hank, love your techniques on a favourite subject!
Thanks for sharing again mate.
Thank you - I appreciate it!!
Fantastic job of giving that figure a life-like / realistic appearance. I'll have to try this technique - if my eye-sight will permit it.
Give it a go! Thanks for watching 👍
Great Video you never disappoint. Your vids have inspired me so much and have been helping me with my own models
Oh thank you so much - I'm so glad to hear it; that's why I do this. Cheers & happy building 👍
'Figures made easy' are not words that go together
Well we're trying to make it that way, eh? Practice makes perfect! 👍
EXCELLENT.
You make it look easy when we know it isn't! Thanks!
Thank you!!
Nicely done!
Thanks very much!!
Wow! Impressive!!!!
Thank you!
Nice paint job 👍🏴
Thank you!!
Another application or realistic art skill. I LIKE IT, 👏👍
Thank you very much!!
I’m really struggling with figures thanks for the tips mate
They're tough! Keep at it - process makes perfect. Thanks for watching! 👍
Hey Hank - once again brilliant tutorial video very helpful
Thank you! I appreciate it 👍
I love your technique to the figure, will give it a try for my jadgpanzer
Awesome! Happy building 👍
I've seen images (motorcyclists I think) in which the riders had dirt covered faces except for where they were covered by the goggles, would that be appropriate in this application, and how would you approach it?
Amazing , really brings the Commander out. I always thought you needed the "whites of the eyes" but they don't make a brush small enough, and like you mention you don't need the. I was amazed at the patches being molded in, this is one detail soldier and blends perfectly with the tank finish. Didn't Patton design a special tank uniform that he wanted the military to approve? I think it had a Gold helmet
Oh man... wouldn't those be something!
Pretty sure it was a football helmet from the Washington Redskins. At least that's the story.
Good vid! Thanks for making these. I know it takes a lot of time and work. Was wondering when someone was going to address how to (or not to) paint the eyes. Seems many choose not to attempt it at this scale.
Thanks for watching!
I think you’re one of the best at figure painting on UA-cam. We need to get PanzerMeister36 to up his figure painting game by learning from you 😂
Ohh you're too kind! And I'm not sure about that... PanzerMeister is one of the best around! I learned a lot from him 👍
Loving the tutorials Hank. I’ve just returned to scale modelling after a break of 40 year!!!. Just purchased tamiya’s 1/35 Sherman with figures so this has come just right. Can I just ask, when you apply a gloss varnish is it an acrylic varnish you use ? Thanks again from the UK
At minute 9:43 it says the name of the product
Damn that came out fantastic, as always. What ratio do you thin the gauzy agent (if at all, that one seems airbrush ready in the bottle) and matt varnish to? And would my Vallejo airbrush cleaner work for cleaning the varnishes out? (I literally just got my first airbrush and I'm still learning how to use/care for it).
Nice video. Have you ever tried to hollow out the lenses on the goggles and filling them with UV resin after painting the interior area in the helmet base color? I've had some nice results with that technique.
Ohh interesting idea! I'll have to give it a go - thanks! 👍
Wonderful job, any chance you could do a few figures from tamiyas recent 1/35 scale infantry scout set ?
Ohhh I've gotta pick myself up a set! 👍
Unless I missed it, you did not show the color you used for the boots. Can you say what that color is?
I saw TankCommander's comment, but I'm not a 'rivet counter' with respect to absolute accuracy. I just like to make them look realistic and this video will greatly help me do a better job on my figures.
Thanks.
Ahh yes - it's Vallejo Red Leather! Happy painting! 🖌️👍
@@SpruesNBrews Thanks. I'm working on Tamiya's M26 Armored Recovery Vehicle and it has a number of figures. Looking forward to trying this technique (after I buy some of the paints - that is quite a list).
BTW, let us know what brew you have going when you do these videos. The 'brew' part was one of the things that drew me to your channel and I'm always interested in learning of different beers.
Can I just ask, by the time the fourth coat has gone onto the face, is there any semblance of the initial black primer and white spray highlight? It would appear that they have been completely painted over by the subsequent coats?
You have done several videos on figure face painting; German infantry, and US tankers and infantry. Which process do think is the best/easiest one for the faces. Is it this one you did for The Alpine US tanker?
I would recommend my "faces made easy" video - that's the simplest version! 👍
Wilson! 🏐
WILSONNNN 😅
Can you help me I'm looking for the quickwheel mask kit for the stug IV
Thanks for the excellent tutorial, makes figure painting seem a bit less intimidating.
Perfect! That's exactly the idea 👍
Did i see it wrigth, has jacket a 2nd armoured patch?
Interesting subject and thanks for the effort. But quick tip ? Your glazes are WAY too thick. No graduation of the colours are visible as a result of this.... Go way thinner and build up the layers. Take a look on the Night Shift channel.. :)
You use multiple thin glaze layers on the face, but what about the uniform? Are they also multiple thin layers?
You got it! For bigger sections of paint, thin is good - but you can get away with thicker paint for straps & webbing & such 👍
How long did you let the wash sit before removing excess with thinner?
It depends on the environment, but I'd say at least a half hour!
Is semi gloss varnish is ok instead of gloss varnish. ?
Gloss works a little better for this, but semi-gloss should get the job done!
every time I use enamel thinner (Humbrol enamel thinner) it still damages the paint through the protectant coat. (Vallejo or Mig Acyrilic gloss). I get scared of weathering because of this.
I had many of the same problems until I tried out AK Interactive Intermediate Gauzy Agent for my gloss coat. It's super strong & I haven't had any problems since!
Really interesting. Doing the Walker Bdog right now. Gonna try this. Great stuff. You put out great vids man.
Thank you very much - and enjoy the M41!
@@SpruesNBrews You bet and thanks. Quick question when and if you have a moment; watching all these vids on weathering, rusting etc Im trying to figure out if I really need to go buy this wash and that varnish in this and that color or can I get away with like a "weathering starter kit just to achieve basic affects without having to get 90 different bottles? Of course I realize it depends on what Im going for like I have to get the flesh and rust for the figures but is there a set of weathering and figure washes I can get? I see 1 on amazon but it only has dark washes. The Vallejo sport one. Is there a catch all military set you know of?
Can you provide order details for the tank?
I've got a link in the description below! Cheers 🍻
great timing - just doing a set of 1/35 US Tank crew to sit on my sherman- noticed you blacked out the goggles entirely ?
Nice! And yes, before adding the gold leaf 👍
Were are the paint brushs from
There's a link in the video description 👍
Hello Hank, great work. I am a big fan of your work. But if i can give you a Top, so check out the Video from Night Shift how he paints figures. In your work you are covering all the shadows from the black and white basing with to thick coats of the base paints. So it don't shine thru it any more. In his style he is painting in very, very thin layers (glaze) and so you have the control how much the black and white basing will shine thru it. That looks amazing and is almost like cheating. That can every of us do. It's so easy and looks really awesome. Painting figures is not for everyone, but his style is easy to do and in my oppinon the best way. I have checked it on figures in 1/24 and it worked very good for me. Check the video and let me know what you think about it. Greets from a big fan from Germany. 😃
Yes, Night Shift probably did a better job than I did 😅
Mathias, I was thinking the same - Nightshift's use of very thin topcoats seems to be the way to go, otherwise not much point in the black and white preshading. Still a nice result here from Hank though, most of us would be proud to achieve that result.
@@stevepritchard3970 yeah Steve i absolutly agree. Hank does a very good job, just a little bit too thick coats. I have to say, i had a hard time to do NightShifts way with vallejo paints. Thin the paint with just a retarder strips me away the white paint over the black. But i think that was my fault. The white coat wasn't cured. But after another coat it works. Like NightShift said, most of us are army modeler and figures is not easy, but in my oppinon this is really a easy way to do this figures. Greets.
Somehow it seems a little less intimidating now.
That's great! I'm really glad to hear it 👍
I find it hard to believe you're not just covering the last layer of paint with the next layer.
It's tricky sometimes, but building up very thin layers is a great way to go 👍🖌️
Great tutorial!
I have to mention two things:
M1944 goggles were not very commonly used during WWII and there are very few photos of them in use in the ETO. I have a feeling the photo you showed in the video was taken after WWII. Personally, I would not use figures with them on for WWII US models. I prefer figures with no goggles (crews were discouraged from wearing goggles in exposed locations to avoid reflecting light and giving away their position), Polaroid 1021s (similar to M44s but with gray rubber), or M1938 Resistal goggles as these were the most commonly used goggles by US GIs and vehicle crews during WWII.
Also, you painted the boots the wrong color. It appears your commander has the canvas and rubber Overshoes on. Those were black and worn over top of the main combat boots of any type a WWII GI may be wearing.
Ah thanks man! Appreciate the tips 🍻
Just a comment for the algorithm.
Thanks!
Hey cousin Hank I just wanted to let you know that the Thanksgiving deals or Thanksgiving Amazon specials that you had produced a video for well I ordered the book the paint brushes and the lamp I think something else I can't remember anyways just wanted to let you know that the brushes are awesome and that book will come in handy when I build my Tamia G6 and one more thing that that lamp is freaking awesome. Do you know where I can get bulbs for the bench light if it goes out or any parts that I may need all right thank you cousin Hank
Oh great! Glad it's all working out well! Unsure about replacement lights, but I've had mine for a year & it's still going strong 👍
