In this video we introduce figures and how to convert them, clean them up, assemble them and get them ready for painting. Adding resin heads and hands can greatly improve your miniature figure, picking a good sculpt will also help you when it comes to painting.
We use a Tamiya German Tank Crew miniature figure for this video and a resin head from Hornet, get it assembled and cleaned ready for painting.

Tamiya’s new figures are fantastic and with minimal cleaning.
Miniart Masterbox are very hard to beat.
I’m still a big Dragon fan but the new releases are so hard to get in Australia.
Great work Jason and nice reviews ❤😊

A great tip if figures have soft details, using a hobby knife you can run it like a scriber in a way but more directionally to sharpen up details (if that makes sense) Even general clothing folds can be made more accentuated doing this

ICM and Master Box are also making very good figure sets in 1/35 these days. ICM even has some good larger figures, including 1/24 scale for car modeling. Thanks for the great video.

I do Airfix models and collect soldiers from all periods of time and different armies, Mostly WWII but I do have others and I even collect police and security figurines too. The reason I have a security guard is some of them are trained by special forces and can be on armed patrol.

Superb. Love figures included with kits or after market. As you say, they really bring them to life. Just as much as weathering makes them look actually used.

ICM figures are top notch no matter how old. I have a 20 year old set of German soldiers, the Iron Cross on one of them even has a barely visible swastika in the middle. Talking about attention to detail.
Master Box have interesting sets with good poses but can be a bit rough around the edges. Miniart are the worst of the bunch with heavy mould lines and flash, but they probably improved as well recently.

Good run down of figures, thanks. I will look forward to the second part! Tamiya do some decent figures in their kits now too. I have the Jagdpanzer IV and it has 2 part characters. My one 'improvement has been to cut the headphones off the head strap and replace it with a bit of photo-etch. The edge of a sprue is about the right size.
    Keep up the good work.

An excellent start to what looks be a very valuable guide to figure painting! I've seen some of your techniques from the past, which have helped greatly, when painting figures from the likes of Tamiya Armour - some great figures included with those; that Churchill with farmer giving bottles of wine is a great set they added in, and adds so much 'animation' to a static model, and I followed your ideas for that.....I loved, and used, the tip with dunking the clear wine bottles first in clear red, and then in clear green! With the supplied transfers/decals, those bottles look good enough to uncork and drink!! 😆
You seem now to be incorporating new techniques so I can't wait to see those too - a bit late for the current tank crew I'm doing that came with an old Italeri Sherman M4A1 kit; a figure pack included from 'MasterBox". They're from Ukraine, and are about Tamiya standard - so much animation in the figures! Even moulded one guy sat up on the turret with a ciggy in his fingers!! 😆

Good video thanks. I agree about how things have come on in recent times. Having built the Tamiya Panzer II last year, the figures that went with it were very lumpy and not huge on detail. I found a Hobby Boss set of Tropical Panzer Crew which were much more detailed and also in more natural poses, rather than the Tamiya ones which were basically charging off somewhere.

Ancient Tamiya figures, painted with testors' bottle paint. The new stuff, especially Miniart is really good and detailed. Better paints too, with more variety. What I can't get figured out is the huge number of figures in various poses in all the dioramas you see. They are not stock figures, may be 3D printed but where do you get the print files for them. For instance I need some Russian city civilians,, seated, and some Russian Army drivers. So far, searching has brought up nada.

3mm or 3.5mm (1/8" in old money) drill bit. Hornet necks vary slightly, but I have always found them to be within that range of 3-3.5mm.

Well done instructional video I’m so nervous to just dive in with figures. I own mostly all lacquer paints I don’t have many acrylic paints. I dove very deep into Mr Color and many other acrylic lacquers. They just aren’t good at brushing required for figuring

Why on earth did Alpine decide to have the joint on the helmet?? Hornet had the sense to have the joint at the neck that you can use to hold it whilst painting. Looking forward to the next part.

Zvezda 1/72 figures are amazing like these tamiya figures, compared to other brands of the same scale I was blown away by the detail and quality. I have about 6 boxes of airfix figures and they are all garbage and re-boxes of vintage tripe that is not even the scale they claim to be but much smaller full of flash and molded with an unworkable plastic rubber substance. 1/72 is a difficult scale to get figures for.

I'm doing some Zvezda 1/35 Panzergrenadiers while I watched this, they are pretty poor by todays standard but they were cheap. You have to cut the tops of their ears off before the helmets will fit because the ears stick out so much, the rest of the bodies are also out of proportion and kind of awkward.
    On a scale of 1 to 10 I wouldn't recommend them at all 🤣
