SO YOU WANT A WILD PET FOX? - Should you tame a Red Fox puppy?

  • Baby red foxes are everywhere and face it, you have been tempted to pick one up, tame it and keep it! But if you do, will it become that cute puppy you thin you can make it? If you bottle raise it and get it used to humans, will it sit in a basket, get walked and act the same as a dog? Also will a wild red fox cub be the same as a domesticated fox pet?
Today we tell you everything you need to know if you stumble upon an abandoned baby red fox, if its possible to raise and keep it or if you should drop it into your local wildlife rehabilitation centre.

I had a wild fox that would come around once a week or so for a little over a year I came to call "Fraya". She was very sweet. She would take food from my hand and occasionally just followed my dog and I around just to stick her nose in our business. Didn't care to be touched but I got in a nose-boop once in a while. Kept looking forward to seeing some cubs but on a walk one day after not seeing her for a while, my dog found her passed away under a bush seemingly from old age. Miss you darling, rest in peace 🥰

I had a wild urban fox friend named Buddy at work for years, we were great friends. He turned the entire site into his playground and even introduced me to his pups. We used to have great fun, I chased him around to make sure he wouldn’t trust humans and he’d do patrols with me. There’s a video of him introducing me to his son on my channel if you want to see Buddy.

I have a red Fox born this year about a month ago she visits me and I feed her by hand and she comes in the kitchen, I love the company but she is wild and I am 65, the mother Fox visits the Garden and she sits back away while I feed the little one I leave food for the rest of the family, she will stay wild because that's the right way I'm just giving them a small hand of friendship and it's been fun...

I believe that if you truly love animals, allow them to remain wild. Return rehabilitated animals to the wild whenever possible. They deserve to live their lives with dignity and respect. That also means respecting the things that define them.

l found a super friendly beautiful young fox sleeping in my town Center. For its safety, I took it home but its sent smells were unbelievably awful. So l decided to ring a famous animal sanctuary to come & collect it. They said it had probably been hit in the head by a car and that's why it did not fear humans at all. However, a couple of weeks later l enquired how my fox was doing and they said it must have been raised by humans as it was the tamest fox they ever had and therefore it could never be released in the wild. Honestly, it was as gentle as a kitten and it's fur in perfect condition & would cutely curl up and sleep throughout the day. I loved that fox & would have kept him as a pet but the smell he made was unbelievably strong and would stink up my entire 6-bedroom house.

There was a huge evolutionary experiment started by Dmitry Belyaev in Siberia back in the 1960s. If I'm not mistaked it's still ongoing. The idea was to imitate the natural selection but not with some rather primitive species like flies or bacterias but with foxes. And effectively to turn them into tame dogs. With quite some success.

Like many on this thread I too have an ongoing relationship with an urban fox here in Bristol. He comes to visit for snacks and now trusts me to be close to him. But even back before I began putting out food he'd visit, simply out of curiosity. Sometimes he'll just hang out with me in the garden. I feel that he recognises a friendly human, but I hope he knows we aren't all like that; my hunch is he's smart enough to know the difference. Anyway, it's a tricky one, trying to preserve wildness when a wild creature has decided to come to you! There's something going on though; I think some urban foxes are sort of semi-domesticating themselves through building selective relationships with people. And I agree, never consider one as a pet, if for no other reason than their scent marking - it really stinks and trying to wash it away makes it even worse.

My mate Ron found a baby fox with his head stuck in the hub of a spare car wheel we tried to pull the cubs head through putting the ears down as we we told by a local rescue wildlife centre that I phoned I also phoned the fire brigade and RSPCA who took all my details and said someone will come there this was 10 o'clock the cubs head would not pull through Ron had to leave for an appointment I stabilized the wheel and stayed nearby to keep an eye on the cub all the way through this the mother fox was 10 feet away and when I backed off she went on and comforted her cub there are 3 other cubs in this group we had seen them the last few weeks around Ron's land so she went from time to time I gave the cub some water and tried again to pull the cubs head through no chance I kept going back because if mum wasn't there it was calling out getting more and more distressed when I went over it seemed to calm down when Ron returned we decided to take action as it was about 12 o'clock and the cub hadn t eaten by this time the cub had calmed down it must have been knackedwe placed a wet towel over the cub with me holding the cub still with mum watching a couple of feet away I had phoned the wildlife centre up and they had tried to hurry up the RSPCA anyway I covered the cub and Ron began to cut the steel wheel with a small grinder the sparks were hitting my arm at the time not hurting as getting the cub free was the only thing on my mind after after about 20 minutes stopping regularly to cool the wheel down with cold wateri could feel the metal as I had put my other hand under the cub and was holding the cubs neck of of the metal with my fingers after cutting a piece of the wheel free I pulled the cub through took the towel off the cub sprung to life and ran to mum both running across the field behind a shed we have seen the fox from time to time since with all 4 cubs and they looked great this had happened a few weeks ago I phoned the wildlife centre up who were great and they said they would contact the RSPCA to tell them the Real reason I want to put this out there is Ron who knew what to do he went for a couple of hours to have a scan to see the result from the course of Radio therapy as he has prostate cancer his main concern was the cub what this man does for wildlife is phenomenal and always puts others before himself.

Here in the south of Brazil we call the opossum a fox, because it invades chicken coops, kills chickens and drinks their blood, here the only wild canids are the Crab-eating fox of the genus Cerdocyon thous, (which we call " Graxaim do mato", "little wolf" or "dog of the bush") and the Pampas fox of the genus Lycalopex gymnocercus (which we call "Graxaim do campo"), and none of them are from the same family as the fox. In the case of wild fox cubs best to keep them wild and enjoy watching them from a distance.

Loved the video. It was very informative. Yes, they are incredible cute and beautiful, but the belong in the wild. Once a fox had her puppies under a shed just next to my house, and I admit that I gave her some fish I brought back from work and she loved it. She liked cookies too and once she followed me into my house, sniffing around, but then she was suddenly gone. Unfortunately I had learned her that she could get food from humans, so I twice read in the lokal paper, that a fox was approcing people and beggin for food. Don't know what happened to her, but I realized that I had made it easy for hunters to maybe shoot her 🥺😥. Foxes need to be affraid of humans, so that they will run away and hopefully stay as safe as possible. Thank You for showing this Anneke and have a lovely rest of your weekend 🤗❤✨️❤ NB.: That one she had in her house, was it Zelda she was called, was very beautiful nd special. I never lost a chicken in two years i had him and he slept in shed with door always open along with pet ram and one warren hen. He eventually ran off after altercation with our cats and i told local farmer not to shoot a fox with a red collar. About three years later i saw him a couple of mile away,he let me smooth him,but he was content as he was, possibly calling home to steal the cats food occasionally! Whether red foxes are legal to keep or not depends on where you live in the US. Some states do allow it. But you may be required to have lots of wildlife training. And local rules may still prohibit it. Seems to me it's a rare person who's up to the task of caring for a fox properly. Plus it may be hard to find a vet who will treat them.

I found a baby duck once in my back patio.
It's against the law to keep them.
The law says that I'm supposed to put it under a tree somewhere.
This was in Vegas during the Summer (115 Degree Days).
Pfft, I raised that duck in a large plastic container and let it swim in my sink.
After 90 days it was fully grown, and I took it to Sunset Park where it immediately flew to all the other ducks.
She might have died soon after but at least she had a chance unlike being put under a tree.

I’ve noticed a lot of pet foxes are kept outside in enclosures. They wreck houses and pee as well.

Anneka thank you very much for sharing this very interesting video! I appreciated so much the project of these people and i think foxes should live their lives in peace without running the risk of being killled...all animals have the right to live their lives as mother Nature created them! 👍👍👍🤩

My cousin had a fox as a pet for a short time but he let it go out side and some times left for month at a time and would come back over the next few years for short visits but he obviously found a mate but still had a bit of home connection.

I was brought up in the countryside. Never agreed with fox hunting, even though I had friends who hunted.
But it's not fair to keep foxes as pets either, unless there's no other choice for the animal.
We are in 40 year old houses now on foxes' ancient lands, so they have a love hate relationship with us and us with them😳😲🙄🤣🥴 🦊🦊🦊😀😀
Most years the cubs try to befriend us, play chase with us around the parked cars, bring us gifts of old socks, children's soft toys. I chat to them, but try to keep them as wild as possible (sadly some neighbours feed them - that does them no favours).
Foxes are like a cross between a cat and a dog, full of beans and "fun", as first generation animals they don't make good pets and shouldn't be kept as such, nor encouraged, they need to fend for themselves too.
We have several little sleep hollows under bushes and shrubs where they snooze. I don't mind, if they don't harm the trees etc, sometimes we make each other jump, if we aren't aware of them. They tolerate us and we tolerate them, the furry little nightmares (we love them really 🦊🥴🙄😄💜✌️).

People like Victoria over at ururu TV who have foxes as pets (fur farm rescues in her case), have a large enclosure and have devoted their whole lives to their foxes. I love foxes but could certainly not look after them lol. If you are lucky you will get a gorgeous fox like Alf, but even Alf can be destructive around the house, plus he has medical issues that require a lot of care.

Hi Anneka, could you profile the Akbash breed. I am especially interested in their ability to work in warmer climates (Queensland Australia ) i am also interest in their lack of smell due to having hair instead of fur from information I have read. Cheers Martyn 😊

I would love to have one as a friend or somewhat pet that would come by and visit, but I wouldn’t wanna live with one in the house because they’re sent is very strong and you can’t get rid of it once they pee on the carpet or something or your rug you can’t get that smell out but otherwise that’s the nature of the beast. I think they’re wonderful little creatures. I enjoy seeing them around. 0:57 0:57

I like to see them in their wild natural habit. We've got enough breeds of dogs to keep as pets. Leave foxes where they are happiest.

I put out water for the local foxes and our German Shepherd goes wild when he hears them or scents their presence. So, keeping a fox as a pet when you have an alpha dog would be a big No.

Wild foxes should remain wild however when they have been rescued from fur farms or are found as a result of being injured by hunting then its possibly a different story, yes keep them at a rescue centre but trying to keep as a pet is not right. Last year we had 6 cubs and a few adults living in our garden. The cubs played with our cat and were easily approached by ourselves. The damage that they caused was unreal but it was worth the experience seeing them playing.

Those baby foxes are absolutely similar to kittens in behavior, including the way they look naughtily innocent. They're curious and want to get their hands on everything around them. Even their long ears, whiskers, and gait are very feline.
I'm taking care of a mamma cat and four kitties. In the night I can hear things falling bang -clang and I know that the little monkeys are up to some tricks. A Delightful racket. Yes I guess, wild animals like foxes. should live where nature has designed them to live. They better fear humans because all aren't as compassionate as Anneika. Yep, animals are a huge responsibility. Soon, they become human to you with an emotional bonding and their every move concerns you. Loved the video.

i have taken care of abandoned fox cubs and other animals for more than 30 years,it is no worse than take care of dogs,,I live high north Lapland Sweden in the mountains and have complete knowledge of how to take care of wild animals when you have to,but I agree in that you cant have them in apartments in a city,,
