The guitar break by Hughie is just phenomenal. It still amazes me to this day. I believe Hughie used a lot of bluegrass scales and techniques in his playing which distinguished him as a guitarist. When you hear him play, you know its Thomasson.
Rich and thick electric guitars, both, the one in the right ear and the one in the left ear, beyond awesome 🎸 soothes my brain 🧠 totally beyond spectacular 😊 yes, the era of the golden age of rock of all types 🙏
Yes red. The outlaws are '70s and '80s for sure if you think of Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, Kansas... All back from when I was a kid... Lol

To react to the best live version of this song, you will need to listen to the cut from their album 'Bring it back alive' (released 1978) which is just over 20 minutes. As a 68 y/o retired musician and a southern rock aficionado, I can assure you will see all the blazing guitar work and action from no less than TWO drummers in this classic southern rock anthem. There will be a lot going on so give yourself enough time to take it all in.
As a band, I believe they only had two studio albums, and at least one concert. They had some internal problems, and they finally disbanded, but about 3 to 4 years. 78 I believe when that came out. I was 21 years old and couldn’t get enough of it. 😎
I've got one for you that will blow your freaking mind. A jazz group called Focus decided to try to perform a rock song. There are lots of vocals but no lyrics. The drums and lead guitar are awesome! It contains elements of yodeling and whistling and this song topped the charts in the early seventies. Try it, you'll like it!
The song is called "Hocus Pocus". Love watching reactions to the live TV version- just to see the look on their faces, as the singer just ups the ante again and again. Great song!
I feel like their first two albums are the best. I hope you have heard the album Hughie released as a solo effort of sorts. I think it came out in 2007. You have to hunt for it as there was a lot of legal issues with it. "Once An Outlaw" is the title. It sounds like it could be stuff off their first two albums. Its really quite amazing. It just shows that Hughie was the core, heart of the band.
The Outlaws formed in the mid 70's in Tampa, Fl and continue to play today with original member Henry Paul. Most of the members from the early years have passed away including Hughie Tomlinson, Billy Jones, Freddy Salem, Harvey Dalton Arnold. Drummer Monte Yoho has pretty much retired from playing.
This song and Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird have the best guitar solos ever. Southern rock at its best. Just turn up the volume and drift away. I am 70 years old and heard both these so gs when they first came out. They blew me away then and I still get goosebumps today. ❤❤❤❤❤it.
This was a Great song!! I loved this one from way back. Jerry Reed and Glenn Campbell were both very respected in the guitar world and I would not doubt if they were inspired at least by Jerry Reed. Even Glenn Campbell used a riff that Jerry Reed wrote and gave him. I also think I heard some Terry Kath style in there.
The Outlaws were a 1970's southern rock band from Tampa, Fl. Their debut album by the same name was in 1975 which this song was on. They actually opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd a time or two, and although their dueling guitars influences were similar to LS, their approach was more similar to the Eagles and Poco emphasizing vocal harmonies among the band members, whereas LS relied on a single lead singer. They are still performing with one original member and their latest album was released in 2020.
Nicely played Red 👍👍 I've been trying to find a place to ask you to dive into the band Little Feat. If you like A list musicians and Southern Rock/Blues/Jazz/Funk... the album Waiting for Columbus from them is a must 🙏 Start with "Fat man in the bathtub" and run with it!! Spread the love 🐶😎🇺🇸
Good stuff. It sounded like they were using every guitar lick known to man. Music that has been out for awhile and stood the test of time is the best. Period.
You probably heard "There Goes Another Love Song" or their version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" They have an album a year from '75 to '80, skipped 81, 2 in 82 then became more sporadic. Their two most recent albums were in 2012 and 2016 and they are still on tour. Jan 25th they will be in New Brunswick NJ WITH the Marshall Tucker band...May have to go see that one! speaking of the Marshall Tucker Band I am making a request for "Fire on the Mountain" I think you'd enjoy that one. EDIT: I am not allowed to listen to a few songs while driving my truck... this is one of them, the wife's rule, not mine!
The Outlaws from Tampa are my favorite of all time. And they are certainly the most underrated band of all time. Original guitarist vocalist Hughie Thomasson commented once they wanted to sing like the Eagles and play like the Outlaws. They certainly accomplished that with their three and four part harmonies being a mainstay of their sound. And Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones were no doubt guitar Masters. Original singer / rythym guitarist Henry Paul (Henry Paul Band and Blackhawk) reformed the band in 2008 after the death of Hughie Thomasson in 2006. With both old and new members, Henry did a hell of a job reforming the band and their later stuff certainly compliments the early stuff. Their third album Hurry Sundown, the last album before Henry Paul left the first time, is a masterpiece. Check it out along with the rest of their discography. Long live southern rock and the Outlaws!
Addendum: What gets me is the fact that nowhere will you find Huey Thomasson or Billy Jones, or any member of the Outlaws on any top 100 list of great guitarist, or even a list of top 100 bands.
