Bud you weren't dumb. You're fixing your own equipment. It's old and it breaks. You did a good job

The “C” shaped things that fit next to the gears are called shift forks. They slide the gear on its shaft to engage/disengage with a neighboring gear. And just so you know, the person that says they never did something like cutting that hi-lo lever has either never attempted anything or has a poor memory. You worked around the problem and learned - good job!

Hello young man, You live and learn (sometimes the hard way). In loose terms I have outlined the some basics information below.
Normally on older vehicles the flywheel is made from one lump of machined metal and as such the machined face is the one the clutch plate (AKA spinner here in the UK) faces up against.
Because the flywheel is much harder than the clutch plate (which is made of a composite and wearable material like a brake lining for example) it is the clutch plate that wears as a consumable part and not the fly wheel.
The pressure plate does the job of holding clutch plate to the flywheel and it is the part that disconnects your clutch plate from the first motion shaft by pushing it up against the flywheel to allow the two to spin individually when changing gear. The pressure plate is a heavy item (as you probably now know) and shouldn't need changing unless the spring fingers are broken.
The gearbox cross member ( The bar you referred too) supports the box and it can (subject to vehicle type) be removed separately or with the gearbox as part of the whole assembly. Normally, you would lower the whole gearbox on a trolley/floor jack and then remove the pressure plate, replace the clutch plate and refit the gearbox and driveshaft. Clutch adjustment is fairly critical so recheck and get the pedal travel measurements so that the clutch is set correctly.
It can still take a day to the job when you don't have a garage with a four post vehicle lift/ramp and you are working on the floor. I have been there and done that. On a Land Rover (Series or Defender models) you may need to remove the seat box and floor to get the box out vertically up to change the clutch unless there is a removable gearbox cross member to save doing most of that work.
All vehicles differ but all work using the same clutch principles unless they are automatic obviously. Have a great day young man! Best regards, JDZ.

Thanks for explaining it all. A lot of us don't know much about mechanical stuff, we truly appreciate all the explaining we can get. Thanks again!

Hi DtW no work, when do these two guys in the desert get a day off with no work, you do what we do when this does happen, we always have shop work.
We like your little shop made jack, and hey we even get a road text trip at the end, thank you.
Look at all those beautiful trees we live in a desert (NO TREES).
    Lance & Patrick.

Will be a couple days until Ican watch this on home computer, my cell skips horribly, but I have always pulled trans with transfer case attached. You need 2 floor jacks, one of which you make a large plate thats bolted to jack plate, then use angle iron or bed frame, and 1" X1" square tube make pegs to fit into trans and transfer case, then 2 ratchet straps, that's now primary and second jack is to twist angles for alignment. If you do primary jack right, trans stays secure.
