Yes I'm a lefty I used to be a righty but I had a stroke not that bad but bad enough to not let my motor skills to work like they used to but I still try to use my right as much as possible. My father lost his right arm I wish he lived long enough to see these modern flippers he probably would have carried a flipper because you know every thing you buy is in some type of package he would complain all the time about opening packages. He would have cut it open if he had one of these modern flippers.
It took me a while to write and learn to use my left hand but now it's like anything else you do it long enough it just becomes natural.
Thanks for this video Jeff did I ever think I would be using my left hand in this part of my life no never I did everything with my right hand, I look at my old drawings and paintings using my left is not the same even my hand writing looks different.

Oh by becoming a lefty made me realise the struggles my father had to go through in the 40's 50's 60's they make a whole lotta stuff for lefty and one arm people if you had to use one hand. Just to zip up your coat try putting the zipper together to zip it up with one hand and use your left. I know you talk about it a few time's. Life does change even when you get older it creeps up on all of us. We tend to talk about what we used could do at my age I can't afford to get hurt trying to do the stuff I did in my 20's and 30's when you hit the 40's you start to notice the quick change of your body. I don't care even if the person is a body builder even he will tell you his body is not like it was in his prime.

Hope it wasn’t what I said. I’m probably the least PC person you’d want to meet. WTF is the difference between “Left Handed People” and Lefties? It is a pain in the ass to use a thumb stud with my right hand; but that’s just me (arthritis). I buy folders with flippers that are ambidextrous. No big deal. Keep doing what you’re doing dude. I’ve been following you for years.

@@unicornlxi no big deal what ever politics you fallow on this channel Jeff does a little of everything people can enjoy. Jeff has good Morals and keeps it clean. I try and respect his channel to, there was people that tried to lead me into an argument and write stupid stuff. Then i realised that is what they wanted to do. Now I don't argue because everyone has there opioion right or wrong it's just someone's opioion.
I used to be right handed until I had a stroke and forced to use my left hand, I still try to use my right hand, but the motor skills don't work like they used to so I force myself to use my right to hold thinks at my craft table.
My father only had his left arm I really didn't know how difficult it must have been to just have one hand to use. At least I still have my two hands to work with. Just zipping up a jacket, or opening a bag of chips without tearing it open without using teeth. If they had the flipper knife before he past away I bet my Pop's would have carried it on him everyday. I carry a small flash light and knife everyday. I have a few diffrent knives I can rotate now. I bought one of those Arkansas ceramics knife sharpener that keeps all my blades razor sharp. I even sharpen my razor on my utility knife razor I don't know when I will ever put a new blade unless it gets chipped that's the only way I can see to replace it, a few strokes from the Arkansa ceramic knife sharpener sharp as new. I don't know why it took me all those year's to know about it and to buy two of them one for my Mother and for me. I have a few diffrent methods tools to sharpen knives and tool's. File's sand paper, stone's, leather, electric sharpening tool's. Have a great week unicornlxix ✌🏽

    Hey Jeff,
I’m a lefty and the best brand of folding knife I’ve used is Benchmade.
The axis lock is one of the best fully systems I’ve ever used.
The SOG arc lock and spyderco bolt action lock are also great, however I’ve seen a few lower end SOG knives with a right hand lock tab only and high end spyderco stuff isn’t super common where I live.
Yes, lockbacks are ambidextrous too, however they’re often a bit cumbersome.
The spyderco compression lock isn’t awful, so long as you flip the clip around, so it’s not in the way.

Lefty here! When i first started collecting knives i originally stuck to spyderco (anything with a backlock) and swiss army knives. Over time i somewhat figured out whats easy and what to stay away from. Currently, I think one of my biggest problems is fixed blade knives that come with a leather sheath are only set up for right side carry. Not many places offer a leather sheath for lefties, only way is plastic style sheaths with swappable clips.

As a left-handed guy, made-for-lefty liner locks are awkward FOR ME. I'm so used to disengaging right-handed liner/framelocks that it sucks to have an appropriately made tool lol. The market is vastly improved over even five years ago, but I still bemoan models that aren't in a configuration I can carry, as you might recall from some of our trade talks. If a knife isn't convertible, I prefer tip-down right-handed knives in my left pocket. Deploying this setup from my lefthand pocket is so familiar to me (as you remember, 90s blades were almost all tip-down, right side carry), that I sometimes grab a tip-up left-handed oriented knife and try to deploy it as if it were tip-down. My right hand is 3x more awkward at opening blades than your left hand is, though lol. Another huge part of this awkwardness is that we're used to our fingers using the pocket clip to secure our grip; your off-hand doesn't have this available if you don't swap the pocket clip.

I, as a southpaw, have just adapted. I’m used to that with knives as well. In fact, when I have a knife where I can switch the pocket clip, I just leave it where it is. When in Rome...”. Axis and back locks are good for us lefties. One problem I have is the cutouts on the handle for dual thumb studs are always better/lower for a right hander. I really like the idea of a Spydie compression lock but all they have is a plain Jane black PM 2. That’s okay. I’m a Manix 2 type anyway. Good video. Thanks.

I have two left siblings that carry folders. It's actually lefty frame locks they find awkward, the righty ones are natural to them now and it's the opening of lefty frame locks that is awkward, they don't ever have to worry about death grip (pressing the lock bar when opening) with right frame locks. This is something I never considered, as a righty I do have to be careful of putting my fingers in the right places, though I've gotten used to it.

I appreciate your coverage on this Jeff. I'm left-handed, and I've owned many knives over the years, only 1 of them being a left-handed model. This was a CRKT M16-14SFGL and I loved it, but ended up losing it.
I've always adapted to opening my knives awkwardly with the exception of that one. As you said it's doable and not too hard to get used to, but still kinda sucks. Especially if there's a pocket clip that isn't adjustable on the knife that makes grabbing it and opening slightly awkward. I appreciate how now there are many more knives that have ambidextrous features now.
However, what I've still found difficult is trying to look at left-handed knives online from different manufacturers. Some websites make them easy to find, but even CRKT who made that awesome left-handed variant, doesn't offer a left-handed filter when looking at knives on their website. So I resort to looking elsewhere rather than waste time going through tons of pages of right-handed knives. Once you've had a knife built for a lefty it's hard to go back.

70% of my collection is benchmades AND my flashlight and wallet is ALWAYS in my left pocket.
However I do agree with you and see your point. Not so much losing your arm but you can definitely break your hand. If you're RH dominant you're more likely to use that hand to complete tasks, so the chances of you breaking that hand go up. So always be prepared to do something awkwardly with you're off hand in case of an emergency.

An interesting follow up to this would be modification you can do to make stuff more left hand friendly. I'm right handed but my friend is left and it has been notable the ways he works around stuff at times and how sometimes he just adapts to right hand style with guns usually. Would the blades on the wave swap into the saw and file spots and make it left handed? Also some knives the thumb stud can be removed and flipped if it's not on both sides making opening at least easier. My buddy has modified the frame to accommodate such things on some of his knives.

  • @gammonsandwich1756

They've made inroads on this but the bias towards right handers is still preventing me from buying many knives I'd otherwise enjoy. Even on allegedly "ambidextrous" knives the vast majority of times the thumb stud or nail nick is only on the right and manufacturers make it as hard to modify their designs as they possibly can.

And now bladesWeLove offers a custom Para 2 with a scale similar to that by having a button that depresses the compression lock.

@ SNOOP U 2. You have a great weekend too. I’m glad there are others who appreciate Jeff like I do. There’s no politics or prejudices involved in his videos. When I started watching UA-cam , I didn’t even know what EDC was, although I was pretty well equipped and have always been fascinated by knives and tools. Always the go to guy when something needed fixing in the office. Anyway, the first vid I saw was on his EDC. He was too young for a gun then and carried a large knife for protection. I took him to task for this because I felt knife fighting was a skilled martial art. That was the last time I dissed him. He is a way cool dude who gives us his opinions and some pretty good product information. I seldom comment now; but Jeff, coming from an old man of seventy: congratulations on your marriage and hope it lasts a long, long time. He should keep up the good work as you should keep your wonderful attitude, man.

Not impressed by most knife makers. Its weak to move a pocket clip and claim to be left handed. I carry ambi or left hand only knives. Hand a lefty obly knife to a right hander...........

THere is one benefit to being a lefty is that you dont jam a frame lock blade from opening with your fingers on the lock.

@@unicornlxi it already has f'd my body up my joints are already shot especially for being in my lower mid 20s but I do love to travel even though I can't always go everywhere I want because of my wheelchair. But I do try and stay in somewhat decent shape.

@ dyl357 Sorry dude, I didn’t know you were in a chair. I was “lucky”, never needed assistance to walk. I led a pretty normal life. But in trying to keep up with my buds, I probably did myself more harm than good. The awkwardness messed up my back which pinched a nerve in my left arm. Downhill from there. I should have had a PT who knew the condition, I wouldn’t be so isolated now. By keeping in shape, I didn’t mean you should be pumped. I meant do whatever it takes to keep the flexibility and dexterity you have. I’d sure like to talk to you in a non public forum. Are you on Facebook or messenger?
