2023 - The Death Of The Superhero

  • Superhero movies have been on the decline for years now, but with four out of six movies released so far this year flopping, and two more likely to join them, 2023 is likely to go down as the year the superhero movie officially died.

It really became sad when superheros stopped representing timeless messages and became vessels for current issues. It cuts their longevity and how people look back on them, I don't think many of the later superhero films will age that gracefully.

And you can thank Hollywood for infesting comics in 2009 and brining their escalation policy (Every action movie has to have higher and higher stakes or else...) to them, along with their inane political screeds based on a life with no hardships.

Don't be silly - superheroes have ALWAYS been vessels for current issues. Reference Superman from the 50's promoting racial equality and harmony, or 70's superheroes promoting ecology or civic-mindedness. The only problem is bad writing, and polarized audiences that wring their hands if the film isn't promoting "their" message. Whether it's people on the left lamenting overt nationalism, or people on the right whining about "woke" if one character is gay, those aren't issues a movie can fix.

I recently watched Constantine (2005) for the first time in my life. It had more style and heart than most action superhero movies in the last decade. The hero is fully human, relying on shady deals with demons and angels, and fights using wits, precarious magic, and sacred guns. No one is necessarily good, but the humans are trying their best. It isn't perfect, but it is the only superhero movie that makes me want to read the comic books.

Hollywood, like many businesses, seems to have said, "If people liked superhero movies, they'll love a constant inundation of superhero movies, television shows, books, comics, and all adjacent entertainment." If they had kept things down to a couple of movies a year, they might have kept their golden goose on life support. Especially if a slower pace might have given them time to actually figure out how pieces fit together, their CGI teams time to work, and generally kept up a higher standard. It's no great surprise to discover at this point that audiences want something else.

Back during the 80s, we took in a retired racing greyhound as well. He was already entering his twilight years, and also he'd broken his leg at some point on the past - so while the injury had fully healed and didn't cause him any pain (which will become relevant a bit further down), his racing days were well and truly over. But that was one of the sweetest dogs my family ever had (and we had quite a few during those years, always one at a time).
One day, we took him along as we went to a dog racing ground (my uncle, one seeing our greyhound, had promptly gotten two of his own, and wanted to see what they could do). You should've seen him perk up when he saw all the other dogs racing. He looked so excited, we decided to let him have a run (as I said above, his leg was fully healed by that time). He actually came in second in that final race of his career :)

they just need to stop listening to the 'woke' karen's of the world. we did great before all this social media crap.
worked fine for generations, most of the stuff being made probably would have been fine, always was in the past. but now you have 5 people saying it's terrible that snowball somehow into 500K just because they were heard. so the studio listens to the wrong opinion, get's it wrong tries to say your fault that we rewrote our movie, and the same people 5 people would saying sht like they should have never changed it. what are they supposed to do.
half the time the people making the posts, causing the riots to change the movies, gender flips, race, things like this aren't even goin to watch what ever they are just offended for what ever reason.. why do we care .......
best option i would say is stop listening and go back to making what you feel is a good movie. it worked well in the past. ignore opinion make what you think would be a good movie fuk the rest and i'm sure we can get this industry turned back around.

They are desperate to try to turn the superhero genre into a female genre...this has ALWAYS been the domain of men, because we love the hero journey. I would watch the hell out of all of these movies if they hadn't clearly been written by people who hate men. If you want to see what happens when you target your movies to the proper demographic, you look at the success until disney got a hold of them, and the raging success of the barbie movie. When you alienate your core demographic, this is what you get.

It’s one thing for a popular movie genre to run its course - that’s just part of the industry. But for the creators to lash out against the audience and to treat them like they’re the problem, that just accelerates the demise of your franchises. If there was a business in any other industry that insulted its customers who had anything critical to say about the product, that business probably wouldn’t be in business for very long. The movie industry is no different, no matter how much they pretend they aren’t.

The only problem with adopting animals is where they came from. Now retired racing dogs fine, retire fighting dogs fuck NO. That's how I lost my dog, to an asshole that assumed they can "fix" a trained killing machine later in life. Arrogant pricks will get theirs, I see that animal that killed mine and I will off it out of self-defense if it approaches me ever, period. Territorial animals like that do not let go of their training. Take it from me, go for the retired racers than the cold blooded underground of fighting animals Did you know that shit is fucking illegal? Did you know it all came from Bear Fighting way back when Queen Elizabeth had to take that down herself? Animals like that do not retire ever, they just get complacent as beasts and then kill again when it suits them, yeah how's that for effing GD fair? This was a court case but then the Judges threw it out. MF I'll get his animal and then see how he likes it MF Fair is FAir, don't obstruct the law and just do your MF job. Don't even bother with fighting animals they are not worth it they cause even more pain and suffering over what, "I can fix it"? My arse you can, fix nature and then come talk to me. As docile as breeds come! 😅 If you can get a young one, it'll be better, but the 3 or 4 year old ones don't stick around long enough to, but no dog ever does. From my point of view you´re totally right. I was a big fan of the MCU up until Endgame. Everything after that was mediocre at best and how can it be anything else ? After Thanos there was nothing planned and that is painfully obvious. No little scenes introducing the next big villain, no more careful introduction of new characters. It feels all forced and every other studio trying to build up a universe have a big problem: we know they are building a cinematic universe and for me personally i don´t know if it is worth investing that time again especially now that all try to copy the marvel formula without recognizing that trend is already fading.
I don´t really want another 10 movie story. I rather have a single movie with a single theme and the good feeling of a story coming to a close at the end.

Another theory to why the superhero genre is failing could do with the generation we are in as well. Marvels timing was on point with the boomer generation knowing all the comics and now they could relive their childhood experience on screen. They could take their kids and get them hooked on it as well. I was one of those kids but now as I’m older and a new parent now, I have no sense of desire to continue my love of these universes. I grew up with the movies, no the classic comics. therefore my kids and other kids just don’t have that parent influence to get them excited. Not sure, just a thought I had when watching this.
    Keep up the good work.

Superhero movies may be dead but the new Godzilla trailer actually had me gripping my seat. Maybe its time studios like Toho took a dominant place in the movie market like anime did over comics. I mean with the writers killing Hollywood with insane demands for massive pay hikes on the backs of an endless stream of flops this could be the time to deal a deathblow to the major studios.

If you're thinking about adopting a former racing greyhound, think about adopting two at the same time. We adopted just one, not realizing how much he'd miss the company of other dogs. It led to enough behavioral troubles we had to give him back (because we could not afford two). It sucked as a personal experience, so I thought I'd offer my thoughts on this one.

I think one of the biggest things contributing to Superhero Fatigue is: You can't just keep coming out with more and more and more characters with less and less ties to the ones that got us interested in going to the movies before you decided to toss these out. That and there really isn't a "struggle" for these new characters to go through. Growing pains, high school, dating, etc. make for boring and complacent story telling. (To The Drinker's point) Storytelling has taken a backseat to "The Message!" and because of that, the original fans that filled the seats, that helped drive the excitement, that helped get their families involved in the characters that they loved and read about when they were kids (and it was a sin to even KNOW these characters, let alone LIKE them), well...they felt as if the movies of their beloved characters were no longer the same characters, going through the same trials and tribulations, having to work together as a team, or find a new way within themselves to overcome the obstacle in front of them. No, now they just "do it". Well, that's bland, boring, and pathetic.
As a massive comic book fan, I have not going to see a single movie since Endgame. I'm not excited about any of them. I've waited for them to come to streaming services and just watched them there. Trying to say that you'll be okay with the new style is just hoping that at least ONE of them is good; but they're not. The universes aren't connected, the characters have no bond with each other (and some of the actors don't either), and now you expect us to cherish them, too? No. No I won't.
This is LITERALLY Marvel from the 90s doing in the movies what they did with the comic books: getting too full of themselves and botching everything. It's because of this that Spider-Man is not under Disney/Marvel properties and can't be used without their permission, or whatever the deal is they've made with each other. Marvel had to sell off character movie rights in order to not go bankrupt. Now you've done it for movies, too. Congratulations...you didn't learn the first time and haven't learned the 2nd time.

I can only speak for myself, but Superhero Fatigue has made me bored with the whole spectrum. If some "artsy" studio like Blumhouse came out with a more stripped down crime fighter-style superhero movie that got good reviews, I wouldn't be interested in it anymore than I would in a big budget CGI fest with a huge city-destroying battle at the end. It's in the genre's best interest to take a 5-10 year break.

They saturated the market with a bunch of marginal or barely-known characters - Shang-Chi? Never heard of him or almost any other character in the movie. Blue Beetle, Black Adam, The Eternals, Ms Marvel, The Inhumans, nobody cares. They are 3rd-raters at best. The movies were also just crap, so characters no one cares about or even has heard of, bad writing, bad acting, offensive agendas. Guardians of the Galaxy were similar, but the first movie was darn near perfect, and had absolutely unforgettable characters, a homocidal maniac raccoon, that's at least memorable. They were spitting out this stuff that absolutely no one asked for, and ruined the market for ALL of the characters, even the A-listers.

Don't get me wrong, every genre have had their day in the cultural zeitgeist (Westerns, Musicals, Slashers, Mobster and so on) and I do agree that the superhero genre will become yet another genre to fade away.
But that being said, unlike the other genres, I believe the superhero genre has suffered on account of identity politics and the creative control of apathetic writers/directors who hate both the source material and the fans of those characters so much that they would willingly tank their projects just to stick it to the fans. When you look at those other genres, they just sort of faded away with popularity and not due to the political climate. But with superheroes, it seems like there's a real antagonism from film producers, writers and directors who want to co-opt superhero projects based on comic books to push their divisive politics down people's throats to the point where fans of these movies become skeptical to the point where they might not be willing to see a potential project due to being burned to many times.
But that's just my speculation as to why the superhero genre is dying out. Because let's be honest, if superhero films were consistently turning out high quality products that were good across the board and not superficial aspects, nobody would have an issue with these films because we would know when we go see these films that we will be treated by high end quality products that were made with love and care.

I am an old-school comic book fan. I started collecting them in the early 80s and Amazing Spider-Man quickly became my favorite. For many years, I was looking forward to a genuinely good superhero movie. We got Blade, in 1998 which I really enjoyed, but I didn't feel that the dream had really been achieved until Tobey MacGuire graced the screen as Spider-Man in 2002. Finally, a GOOD representation of my favorite childhood superhero. Then, six years later, we got Iron Man--my brother in law's favorite character. And again, it was GOOD! The MCU was just starting and we got a whole host of excellent (and some not-so-good) superhero movies. This all reached a crescendo with the two part Infinity War story arc. At this point, we are already starting to get hefty doses of the political activist garbage, but you could overlook it because the stories were still really good. Then it was over. Spider-Man: No Way Home was a really good late-comer, but really, the superhero genre was pretty played out at that point. Speaking as an old-school comic book fan, I can tell you with absolutely certainty that I am thoroughly done with superhero movies. They have overstayed their welcome and now I just want them to go away.

i think DC should embrace the elseworlds set up, They can make original stories and takes of the characters while not labeling it as a cinematic universe. They can experiment on it a lot and take different themes. technically Joker and the batman didn't feel like superhero movies it just felt like the classic movies from the 70s where its focused on story rather than theatrics. I feel like DC is not playing their cards with this kinds of idea. They can make Movies with super hero characters and make it into character driven movies with different genres like noir, surrealism or even horror. I think DC should focus on making original stories instead of a cinematic universe. I would like to see a Martian manhunter with noir elements and take inspiration from the invasion of the body snatchers, the sign and even the thing into one movie. Alot of these movies would be experimental and low budget compared to the block buster and the good thing about this is that if it flops it wont be a big damage monetary wise for WB and they don't have to worry about making a sequel or a series unlike if a movie from a cinematic universe sucked it basically impacts everything. My point, DC needs to embrace original ideas and stray from comic book adaptations especially if they cant make a plan. The focus should be noir type or even pulp like. Tbh i DESPISE CINEMATIC UNIVERSES, i do like things to connect but not everything needs to nor do you need a cinematic universe for everything to connect.
