Bethesda got lucky when they put out Fallout 3 because open world games and post-apocalyptic settings were getting extremely popular so they just plastered a post-apocalyptic setting onto Oblivion and caught that wave in time. Then they slightly upgraded that formula and put out Skyrim and Fallout 4, basically just graphically updated versions of Oblivion and Fallout 3. But by that time open world RPGs were a dime a dozen and interest was waning quickly because other games were making those with better combat, deeper exploration, more in-depth crafting systems, better stories, etc. They were falling behind in the genre they helped popularize. They tried to jump on the bandwagon way to late with Fallout 76 after seeing the success that the online crafting and survival genre was having with DayZ, PUBG, Rust, etc. Then Obsidian made Fallout NV in space with Outer Worlds and No Man's Sky and Elite Dangerous were expanding the open world genre by making gigantic, procedurally generated maps set in space. Now Bethesda comes along years later and tries to copy No Man's Sky and Outer Worlds by making Fallout/Skyrim in space with a procedurally generated map. Missing the bandwagon by years and doing what they do worse than other games that have already done what they do but better. It's kinda getting pathetic and sad at this point. They've essentially just been chasing trends by continually slapping a new coat of paint on Oblivion for decades, getting as much mileage out of their original success as possible. It's pretty clear they don't have any new ideas or even know how to significantly improve upon that template. Or they don't care and the money men are content to milk that cow until it's completely wrung dry, even if that means the company goes under. It's a shame.
I will say Skyrim slaps with some decent or goofy mods (immersive indigestion was a favorite for adding schoolyard humor) and Fallout 3, while it has a shit ton of issues (like the steam version still being bunked for me) is still a fun world to explore and find cool weapons and shit. I'm not turning my brain on for either, mind you, but they're fun, "easy-going" games imo. What I've played of FO4 and seen of FO76, and Starfield is telling me to avoid Bethesda at all costs lmao
There wasn't any game at that time that was even close to skyrim exploration-wise, and there is still only a few. That's why people still play skyrim 13 years later, even when there's dozens of open worlds to choose from. Since morrowind and till starfield they were making some of the most well-crafted worlds in terms of density and attention to detail, which made them incredibly interesting to explore. Every area felt unique. That is why starfield is being so criticized even by their biggest fans - it doesn't have that brilliant handcrafted world that made each playthrough unique and interesting. ps. Also, saying they got lucky with fallout 3 is really stupid. There wasn't a single game quite like it. It was an open world shooter-rpg at the time when open world games were only starting to get popular, open world shooters were quite rare, and open world shooter-RPGs were practically nonexistent. I personally don't like fallout 3 that much but its success is completely understandable
Yeah, Joe liked it well enough, I believe he gave it his ol reliable 6/10. Lot of issues, liked it less then previous Bethesda games, but still enjoyable. Chat dislikes it a lot more then he did, yeah
i like how joe basically went into this game knowing it was going to just be stupid from the jump and showed it no respect at all... just being derptastic right from the jump
I'm not sure that's wholly fair, but he can be rather insufferably black pill adjacent, let's say. He reacts hyperbolically at first, chat often just goes harder, and it does end up being a rather unpleasantly whiny time. I think his comparison to Witcher 3's lack of doors is kinda dumb/wayward, for example. Firstly, he's *overestimating* the impact seamless spaces have on a sense of immersion (for want of a better word). I don't think most players care, unless load times are substantial. This is a guy - and I love Joe as a critic and, mostly, a streamer - who can't [virtually] stand still in lifts or confined spaces... He's rather ADHD. That's not representative of most people's experience with split second, or even several second, long waits like in SF. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly; it's a different engine? To me that's mostly all the justification I need. I'd very much like BGS to come out and explain why they utilise closed cells to such an extent, but that's how their games have functioned for decades. BGS fans will not - or should not - be surprised or bothered. I've not finished this stream yet, or the next, obviously. I'm guessing he'll have moderated his reactions by the end of the SF streams. I still love SF, and I was well ahead of the BGS hate curve... Oblivion was what broke my faith and to a degree respect for them. By Skyrim I'd come to accept the new mass-market BGS and their many limitations, and still value the unique experiences they craft. If they had any direct competition, I'd be playing them. But decades on from Morrowind, and they do not... More fool every other developer and publisher for not challenging BGS (on scale, structural and narrative RP freedom, and on mod support).

They have an oxygen meter and spacesuits when you won't die being naked on the frozen, airless moon. This is supposed to be a space game. What the hell?! Edit: Nevermind, it's just a buggy mess because it's a Bethesda game. Of course.

i dont understand why he spents so so much time with the glitch/bug in the end and acts like its a gotcha moment for the game...

Preach, OP!
Been saying Skyrim is overrated af since about 6months after it released.
Its a tool for normies to say they "play RPGs". At best.

It's genuinely laughable that Kingdom Hearts has better spaceship building mechanics than a game that's supposed to be about space exploration.
