I left Sony for the S5ii. The skin tones with LUMIX are far superior to what I saw on the Sony FX30 I had. Plus, the colors in general with the S5ii are more accurate in my opinion. Filming foliage Sony seems to add yellow to everything. Yellow to the skin tones, and yellow to leaves and trees. It became too distracting after a while. So, when I saw the S5ii on sale, I grabbed it and haven''t looked back. As far as a 4K 60 crop goes, I don't know anyone that cares about it. I only find people on UA-cam who do. When I had the Sony A7iv, I shot a 4K 60fps clip to see what all the fuss was about. I stood next to a 5-ft wide water fountain and composed the shot to fill the frame with the fountain. I switched to 4K 60fps, and I had to step back a whole 1-1/2 feet to get the same composition. It was at that point, I realized how bloody stupid the whining about the crop was. Honestly, I don''t shoot a lot of slow motion. But, I've never had a problem with crops before. If I had to deal with cropping in the future, I will find a way to work with it. @@peterra2532 Sure. But straight out of camera with a simple grade the LUMIX colors are more accurate in my experience. With Sony log I always have to tweak the skin tones. But, it's great for quick captures without having to grade.
The S9 and S5IIX are nothing alike for photography. So I don't know how many of your pet peeves on the S9 translate to the S5IIX. It literally beats Fuji films recipes, and beats Sony on ergonomics and the raw files, holy shit the raw files are goated. The best part is besides real time luts the original S5 can be found for $700 and will give you the same preformance so if you’re doing wedding and want a second body, it’s literally the cost of a lens.
For the 4K 60, we just invested in a couple affordable APS-C lenses. We are fully EF mount based. So we use the Sigma EF to L adapter. The Canon 10-18 EF-S (APSC) lens is highly regarded by Ken Rockwell if you are into his reviews. I also really like it. It is a work around so we have a duplicate lens for full frame with the 16-35 but I don't mind. But I get that could be annoying. And honestly, I think they are saving the 4k 60 no crop for the updated S1H. The S5iiX is an unbeatable value. Also, I was a former Sony user that went to Blackmagic, then found the S5iiX and fully agree this is (almost) the best of both worlds.
Definitely a handy thing in certain situations, I can image! Wouldn't it be better to display a LUT on the camera though and add the LUT to all footage afterwards directly? In that way you have the look inside the camera but the flexility in post. Don't know if that's possible with the Lumix though
@@BTMovieSecondChannel…Yeah custom LUT preview for you log footage has been a feature on Lumix cameras since at least the GH5. I shot on A7SIII, A7IV and FX6 for a few years and switched to Panasonic. The image is more detailed, I have more control over it (I can turn off noise reduction and sharpening completely when recording internally), IBIS is on a whole different level, and overall reliability is all over the place. Panasonic unfortunately suffers from very poor marketing. So far I haven't noticed them making any comment that they've solved the lag with HDMI (just switch the hdmi output to Full HD, it's a new feature). I hope the management throws them out and capable people catch on.
I can't express enough how much I appreciate these videos on the S5IIX. I love that you don't just go the "oh well I'm a Sony shooter, not gonna bother with long-term reviewing other stuff" route and give proper credit where credit is due. I agree on everything you said in the video, the S5IIX really is a workhorse, and in its price class it's hard to get something so well-rounded in many scenarios. Since we're talking about photography, how about an S1R retro-review?
Hey Zach, how do you feel about the external monitor workflow for pulling focus on the S5iix? I have one and love it, but the HDMI lag is probably my biggest negative on the camera. Have you had any issues with this? Do you pull focus manually with the anamorphics?
The Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II X does indeed support 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second, but only in 4K 4:2:0 10-bit using the Super35 crop (not full-frame). For 4K60, there is also a Super35 crop, so it does not use the full-frame sensor for either 4K60 or 4K120. To summarize: 4K120: Super35 crop, 4:2:0 10-bit 4K60: Super35 crop, 4:2:2 10-bit
The reason I opted for the FX30 over this is the HDMI lag. It would have made pulling focus impossible for a 1st AC. I don’t mind the super 35 sensor but I’d love to have the ability to shoot open gate. Don’t understand why Sony doesn’t allow that.
I have been a full time professional photographer for 20 years, and got into video a few years ago. I just sold an A7IV and A7s3 to switch to the S5IIX. Agree with everything in this review, except for the comments on the camera for photography. One of my favorite still cameras ever when I switched to digital years ago was the Nikon D3. This camera is the closest to that look and performance that I have found since. The images are just beautiful and look to me much more film like. I don't see any issues with the design of the camera for photography at all.
Great camera, I used to own one, now I own an FX6 instead. Very happy with the FX6. It's ready to go from the jump. Agreed with the lack of touch focus and 4k60, and even 4k120. I didn't think I'd use it much on the FX3 but from time to time it saves me on weddings and especially product shoots. Additionally, Lumix lacks a good ecosystem. There's only one full frame camera with solid AF so far, and the GH7 shares a different sensor so you can't even use the same lenses if you have a GH7 and an S5ii. As a full time hybrid shooter, I was genuinely considering switching to the S52X after using Canon glass and GH5s' for years. But Sony's photo and video capable cameras are stronger. I want to invest in a lens system that delivers that best auto focus currently. I've shot manual focus for 10 years and I wanted the option of auto. The S52 has a wonderful image, great IBIS, and I had familiarity with Lumix- but Sony also has Sigma zooms and fantastic autofocus for photo and video. Settled with an FX3 and 2 A7RV's. I'm fully expecting the next iteration of LUMIX to be great for video though!
@@danieldavis6316 Because if you invest in L mount lenses, you're stuck with L mount cameras,- Panasonic's photo cameras and AF tech is not at the level of Sony, and most likely won't get there for a while. So my philosophy is to invest in what brings out the best of the lens right now. And Sigmas are great value compared to G Master.
Lumix s5iix is a great 4k24/30 full frame camera (without fast mouvement)…I sold mine and bought the sony zv-e1 for 1400usd, I think that this camera is a better polyvalent camera
Awesome cam and if it wasn’t for Sony I’d probably go w lumix but I can almost guarantee the Sony zv e1 has equal if not better ibis. Having used both a7siii and zve1 the Sony ibis is way more superior (haven’t used this Panasonic yet). Dynamic stability on zv is almost gimbal like when moving straight or slowly paning. The big selling point for LUMIX is price and having camera w 32 bit and raw capability and open gate and solid af and ibis. Having Sony options w superior af and lowlight (a7siii, fx3, zve1 and a7iv) superior dynamic range (a7iv) and great light portable audio options w blm mics and some cams that offer either adequate or potentially equal/superior ibis (zve1) and more lens options and competitive pricing. Not to mention I need a non ibis cam w gyro data camera for Fpv drones and Sony is only mirrorless camera with the option (zve10ii aka fx30 in 300 gram body) also makes a great lightweight pov cam (go pro weighs 150grams) w a magic arm connected to mouth piece
I don't think personal subjective preference regarding "photography experience" qualifies as a con. If I were to switch to Sony or Canon I would probably wish they worked the way LUMIX does. It's neither good nor bad - just different. Cropped 60fps 4K easily overcome with a wider lens. I believe the reason they do this is because of the readout speed. If they didn't people would bitch about the rolling shutter. The ONE glaring omission is external TIME CODE . To solo shooters it is not even considered and honestly 99 percent don't understand what it's for. I am well aware we can record time code on an audio track and convert the file but none of the editors I worked with are willing to deal with that. It's easier for them to convince the producer to hire someone else next time. If you are not in sync with the rest of the crew you are not "PRO". SH1, GH6 GH7 take it in through the flash sync port.
Actually I like photography side of this camera more than Sony, but less tha Canon. To compare with Sony -lut or standard profile colors are much better, also the screen is brighter and better so when you look on taken picture you look with satisfied with result on camera. Just a feel that give you, that you take good photo without oversaturated and blownout highligts. When you edit this picture course they look better, but Lumix not leave you with sens of dissatisfacion.
I love Sony so much, and I would still be using Sony if I could, but I don't get all the cinema features like the S5iix. If the Sony A7V comes out and has open gate I will buy it immediately because I love Sony, but until then goodbye Sony.
I feel very different with regards to photo, the custom button options and general layout are a big pro for me compared to some others. On the other hand, I feel like they are lacking in pixels compared to the 33MP where seeing most camera's coming with released over the last year.
The problem is that the s5iix is an entry level camera. It’s a great, industry changing one, but there are no pro-level options from lumix that offer solutions to its short-comings. It’s basically the Sony A7IV equivalent for Lumix but there’s a reason Sony has other camera models beyond the A7IV that lean farther in different directions. Which, I think, is why people are getting frustrated with stuff like the S9. People want updates to their flagship cameras like the S1H, S1, and S1R, but lumix seems content on recycling the same s5/s5ii tech over and over in different body types and with mildly different features. I think cameras like the S9 and S5D wouldn’t have so many open critics if they had released their updated flagship cameras first. People wouldn’t feel like lumix is ignoring their investment into the company and the risk they took when they bought into the original flagship cameras 5 years ago. Maybe Panasonic is preparing to launch their next wave of flagship cameras, it’s still within the realm of possibility, but also, maybe they’re quietly abandoning them like they did the EVA1 or the Varicam series. Everyone knows that Canon, Sony, and Nikon are going to keep their flagships reasonably updated at this point. But it’s tough to know what Panasonic is up to, and it’s a recipe for unease.
I have watched dozens of videos on S5ii and S5iiX, all videos looked like the people in the frame caught by jaundice.. even the atmosphere is also getting yellowish... Per my taste Lumix colour science on these two models is the worst than ever..

And the image quality and ease of grading compared to CLOG 3 is not a joke!
Just my two cents without knowing anything’s about your needs and previous experience. I’ll see myself out.
I see now you’re a pro and that I should be asking you stuff…damn…
@@DagarMedBjorn haha don’t be silly! I appreciate the input! Looking for a full frame camera for my A cam, and a full frame to compare to apsc cams when needed. Just not enjoying Sonys full frame options for the price at the moment

Was actually looking at Sony at first but there was always something I missed with every model.
If the Lens situation between the brands are not an issue for you it’s a good buy. I adapt all my canon ef lenses and they work very well so you’ve actually got quite a good market there as well if you want to seriously expand your options.
On my S5II I can be standing, zoomed out to 200mm and be fine with video.
I enjoyed featuring in this video ❤ 👌
Has anyone tried using a mist filter to eliminate moire on the S5iix? I’d love this cam but I had moire on clothes all of the time.
Anybody notice any shutter lag while using flash accessories like Godox flashes and triggers?
Could you tell me more about this? What happens with godox flashes and these cameras?
@Giovanni-Giorgio some cameras have shutter lag while using flash, you can literally see the non sync between flash and shutter operation. With westcott flashes there's no lag, but with Godox.
Does s5iix and s9 have similar stabilization ?
Yes it is
Zach posts, I watch

Where
I have this camera with the twin lens kit, photography wise I like it actually but I have an Xpro2 which is my main shooter. Its mega with the Monochrome D look paired with my Canon FD 50m... but thinking of getting a Nikon ZF for stills and just keep the S5iiX for video hate toggling between the two. Also, the Helium grip looks mega - love the channel... I have a proposition for you I think you may like business wise. Lets chat
Lumix, hire this handsome devil!
A little confused on your point about sigma zooms specifically for e mount, they make lenses for l mount as well
@@danieldavis6316 Because if you invest in L mount lenses, you're stuck with L mount cameras,- Panasonic's photo cameras and AF tech is not at the level of Sony, and most likely won't get there for a while. So my philosophy is to invest in what brings out the best of the lens right now. And Sigmas are great value compared to G Master.
Lumix s5iix is a great 4k24/30 full frame camera (without fast mouvement)…I sold mine and bought the sony zv-e1 for 1400usd, I think that this camera is a better polyvalent camera
agreed with all you said. love my S5IIX with the sigma lens.
I just sent un my s5iix for repairs.
*me who switched from the FX30 to the S5iix*
Z6III > S5IIX
dont you do it, don't you dare.
S5D is only aviable in Europe. They need to update it, to meet stupid UE standards which requiers sold electronics without a charger.
Your best life decision!
Nice
Xh2s over s5ii
I sold X-H2s for S5IIx. AF in FW 6.0 was terrible, especially in the video
@ understandable, AF isn’t huge for me so it works but I get that for some people it’s really important.
Panasonic is "fantastic", crop 4k 60 fps in 2024 😂 Sorry, but Sony A7s3 is better 😁
I have watched dozens of videos on S5ii and S5iiX, all videos looked like the people in the frame caught by jaundice.. even the atmosphere is also getting yellowish... Per my taste Lumix colour science on these two models is the worst than ever..
