    In Germany, it is mandatory to disclose the addition of E150a on the label. I have bottles of five different batches of the Redbreast 12yo CS at home and not a single one contains such a statement.

    I can confirm that, although it may not say so on the packaging...this whiskey neither has colour added, nor is it chill-filtered.
    I also think it a bit of a slight to label this a blend when it is a Pot Still Whiskey which is a style all its own. To call this a blend is like calling Bourbon, American Whiskey. Bourbon's bourbon. Malt's malt. Pot Still is Pot Still, etc.

    So glad to see that honesty. I got a bottle a while ago after so many good reviews and was utterly underwhelmed (I am a malt drinker). It's a good and solid daily sipper but it's a low to max. mid 80 and not an outstanding whiskey. Especially given the price. The 15 is probably the better choice for only a few Euros more. I stay with my malts. Perhaps I don't fully get anything else.

    As someone who really likes Irish whiskies and who has loved Redbreast for a while now, I agree with Ralfy.
    And the Redbreasts are not the cheapest of whiskies out there!
    I still love Redbreast - but the prices they charge for the quality they deliver are right at the limit of what I am prepared to spend. I'm anticipating that they will soon either be over that limit with the price or under the limit with the quality ... probably both.

    I think you’re writing off Loch Lomond a bit too much, the 2022 bottling’s across most of the core range are very good quality, in particularly the Inchmurrin 12 and the single grain peated. In their price bracket, especially on discounts, they’re very hard to beat. The older stuff is still a little flat imho, but it’s clear to see the whisky distilled since about 15 years ago is mostly stellar, from 2019 onwards the standards of the 12 year old’s have been high and keep improving. There’s some fantastic independent Inchfad (Heavily peated) and Inchmurrin (unpeated) that has been released in the last 12 months, in particularly from Cadenhead’s, Brave New Spirits and SMWS.

    • @CharlesOffdensen
      @CharlesOffdensen Рік тому

      I personally am not in love with the Inchmurrin. It is fruity, but not as much as say Glencaddam 15. I prefer the regular Loch Lomond 12, it has a bit of pepper to the fruits. Still, it's not my favorites whisky. I only buy Loch Lomond, because of the price. I can bay three bottles of Loch Lomond 12 or 12 Inchmurrin for the price of Glencaddam 15.

    So glad you reviewed this, Ralfy. For the past 4 or 5 months I've been thinking about picking up a bottle of Redbreast CS, but not having tried it before I decided it was a bit too expensive for something I'm not sure would be worth the price. As it is, I'm not that impressed with the standard Redbreast 12yo. So if I can find it, I'll buy a bottle of Knappogue Castle 14yo Double Wood instead - that I know to be an excellent single pot still Irish whiskey.

    • @paulm749
      @paulm749 Рік тому +1

      @Auberginenpeter I've seen other reviews of it, and if I ever find this at a bar I will likely try it. If I find it sufficiently appealing, then I will consider buying an entire bottle. The fact is, experience has shown me that Ralfy's impression usually match my own very closely.
      Another factor in my decision is that the standard 12yo Redbreast that I have tasted did not impress me, despite the near-universal praise it gets. Perhaps this brand just isn't in my wheelhouse. So again, my next purchase of an Irish will be Knappogue Castle 14yo, as I know it to be an excellent Irish whiskey with the added incentive that it's priced considerably lower than the Cask Strength Redbreast.

      @auberginenpeter7189Chill out. It’s a honest review, and I fully agree with Ralfy on this one. But I know Redbreast has some kind of cult following.
      I prefer the RB15 over the 12CS, it has the much better mouthfeel. I would give an 84 for the 15, and in my opinion, an 80 MM for the 12CS is spot on.
      It’s a good whiskey, but it’s nothing special. I prefer the Spots and Powers John Lane, they are much better whiskies.
      I would buy the Teeling Single Malt instead of the RB12CS, and it’s a lot cheaper.

    Redbreast 12yo CS is my favourite always-available whisky.
    It's wrong to call it blended, though. Single-pot still is Ireland's own specific style and there's no blending of different distilleries' product involved, nor different styles.

    Thanks Ralfy for a very informative episode! This Redbreast would be B1/21 and it's actually one of the whiskeys (or actually the only whiskey since the other ones are scotch) in a tasting we're having tonight. Anyway right after opening the bottle it's quite dark flavoured and closed up for an irish whiskey and especially for a Redbreast which are usually much more fruity and playful. It doesn't properly open up the flavours with adding water either. It needs more time. The fruity notes will start to appear after the bottle has been reacting with oxygen for a day or two. The reaction will still continue after that and enhances the whiskey more and more. My friendly advice for all whisk(e)y lovers is to open this bottle and let it wait on your shelf for about two weeks before enjoying it with a splash of water. The result is a thick vanilla fruitbasket beginning which turns into a lovely roasted oak pleasure with a punch. Cheers!

    As an American just starting to get into malt whiskey, I have to agree that Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is one of the best bourbons to judge us by. It’s consistently one of the best values in bourbon, and it’s maintained it’s 12 year age statement. Beyond that, it’s obtainable. You have to look for it a bit, but by and large if you put in a little work you can get one of the three annual batches.
    Wild Turkey 101 is also a more cost effective bottle I’d be happy to be judged by, although the last bottle I bought was plain rotten. I think the store may have left it in direct sunlight. I’m not a big fan of Four Roses profile, but I agree with Ralfy’s take about the brand. They do bottle quality at an affordable price, although quantity is somewhat limited by that. Cheers to all!

    Like others have said, it isn't chill filtered as confirmed by the distillery website. It should be on the label, but still. I also don't think it's fair to categorise it as a blended whiskey, it's a single pot still.

    • @whompbiscuits8930
      @whompbiscuits8930 Рік тому +2

      Agreed, it should be on the label. However that begs the question, why is it not, considering it helps promote it? IMO the reason it's not is because they know at some point they'll start chill-filtering it and they then won't have to take on the cost of new labels being printed. Striking it from their website is faster and costs nothing.

    • @cultofdagon
      @cultofdagon Рік тому +2

      @whompbiscuits8930 Yes, I think you're probably not wrong about that, and I will always look for that information on a label because that does suggest a stronger commitment to maintaining that level of integrity. That being said, I think it is important for a reviewer to do their best not to misrepresent the contents of a particular bottle.

    got a bottle of it, and i found it to be a little boring to reach out for it myself, so it kinda sits in the shelf, but it is now my "ooohhh wow" bottle for visitors/whisky newbs, since its fruity, sherry influence, but has that CS, and people who are normally drinking jameson or blends are blown away by it. So in the end it really found its place. For myself i might pour it in summer, maybe even pop an icecube when its really hot in the garden, since the CS can handle the additional water.

      I prefer the RB 15 year old, and if I had to give a mark for it, it would be a fair, solid 85. I know RB it’s a very popular brand and the moment I saw Ralfy made a review of the 12CS I knew it would be controversial.
      It’s good Irish whiskey, but let’s not pretend it’s great. I agree with Ralfy on the cask management of RB, it could be much better whiskey if they we’re using better, more active casks.

    I've had a sample of this particular Batch, which judging by the ABV has to be B1/21 and wasn't all that impressed. Compared to Powers 12 John's Lane Release from 2016, of which I happened to have an open bottle at that time, Redbreast presented more sweet notes, and more artificial tropical fruit flavors. Nothing to blow my hat off. A competent whiskey nevertheless and considering the fact that in Bulgaria it can still be bought for 40-ish euros, a decent value too. I guess I'm just not a big fan of single pot still style. Those artificial, solventy, aromatic notes I get just don't quite do it for me. Still I have batches B1/16 and B1/20 plus a bottle of the 15 yo in the stash which I may find more appealing.
    Don't remember where my vote went in this category, but I completely agree about Four Roses Single Barrel. Excellent quality at affordable price! Never seen Loch Lomond Single Grain Peated but I do love the 12 yo. If they stop using E150a, I think Loch Lomond 12 and Inchmurrin 12 have very good chances to be rated as one of the best 12 yo malt whiskies in the market nowadays. Both quality and value wise.
    Cheers!

    I've always loved Irish whiskeys despite triple-distillation but nowadays I have to be very careful largely because of value. Indeed Ralfy is right, prices are skyrocketing, I see it in the liquor stores quite regularly. The standard Redbreast 12 (not cask strength) runs almost $80 here in NC, and it's chill-filtered, artificially colored and only 40%. This version being reviewed is $100 here, the 15yo version $140. IMO Redbreast is becoming more a brand and less a product, and when that happens, value plummets.
    I'm sure it's still good, but as Ralfy pointed out, it's not anywhere near its potential. And that's what mitigates its value and should give good reason to pause. Irish whiskeys are crossing the rubicon, and they have no incentive to rein it in.

If Readbreast was a Scotch whisky ... this would be labelled Single Grain Whiskey because not 100% Malted Barley ! Am I wrong ?

    His crusade against the winners from the OSWA’s continue. He has ranked winners significantly lower than his previous review of the same bottle in the near future.
    His brand is appearing to know more than the tasters, the makers, and certainly more than us mere mortals.
    I’ve been a long time subscriber and while I have learned a lot and 80% of what he says he true and informative, the other 20% is meant to build his own brand sense of self worth.
    To call the RB12 CS an 80 is the last straw. Shameful.

    Agreed that the 15 is superior to this bottling. I have some 15 left from a purchase about 2 years ago and I find myself reaching past it every time to something more engaging. I wouldn't buy a Redbreast again any time soon, which I find sad since I considered it a favourite. There's far more flavour out there in new distilleries, Campbeltown and Islay.

    There's a lot going on in Ireland, good and bad things. What's really good that there's a lot of quality distilleries that make excellent whisky, such as Dingle, Boann and Waterford. What's really a shame that there're new distilleries such as Lough Gill, founded in 2015 and selling the brand Atrhrú 12 year old . It's just an example of not being transparant.= bad for the industry.

It is so strange to praise the democratic values of the OSWAs and then demolish the winners as if the voters had just selected the least common denominator, i.e. "popular" whiskies. As for the real value added opinions they are probably behind the pay wall. Ralfy is running a business in the end.
