    I am still surprised how quickly Ardnamurchan became one of my favourite Distilleries.
    I have Whiskys from more than 200 distilleries in my collection, many old and expensive Bottlings, but outside of the known craft producers like Springbank I catch myself to grab the Bottlings of newcomers like Ardnamurchan, Kilchoman or Cotswolds most of the time.
    If someone will safe Scotch regarding quality for price ratio it will be them not Diageo or PernodRicard!

    I drove to the distillery last year to pick up a distillery exclusive bottle and a few others. It's a wonderful part of Scotland, the scenery is to die for. What a fantastic journey that was.

    filtering is a huge scam even with non chill filtered. It's still filtering out good stuff. It all should just be strained and never run through any filters. This should be the next big push to straining only and no filtering at all. I have been talking about this for years. State on labels strained but never filtered.

    I think if an "expert" said that chill filtration is "here nor there", meaning it's of no importance, then the correct response is to say "then why do it in the first place?"

An average consumer; a new customer who is almost certainly entering the market at a low price point and wants to get a "smooth" 40% product on the rocks; or the socialites and high-rollers who could care less what's inside the bottle, as long as the bottle itself is a status symbol.
      I'm well past the point where I'm going to get my knickers in a twist over it. There are markets for chill filtered products. There are reasons for some brands to do it. If my palate has moved on, so be it. We are not hurting for integrity options in today's market. Not even a little bit. If anything, the market is actually pushing hard toward that end of the spectrum.

      You will always find people making excuses for those practices. And the reason why some people defend a low ABV, chill filtration and E150a is they are brand led. I met people claiming Talisker is a better whisky because it’s chill filtered. Right ..
      The “average consumer” or whisky beginner isn’t dumb, you can explain on the package why your whisky might get cloudy when the temperatures are low and why it’s a good thing it isn’t chill filtered.
      And the average customer isn’t a homogeneous mass preferring the same ABV. There are many whisky beginners who wouldn’t mind when their favourite whisky is bottled at 46%, I started my whisky journey with the Glencadam 10, and I didn’t think “It’s really nice, but man, why didn’t they bottle it at 40% and chill filtered it to death?”
      That’s just nonsense. The Lagavulin 16 isn’t bottled at 43%, chill filtered and got artificial colour added because „it might irritate the average consumer if it’s naturally presented“. That’s bullshit. The main reason why so many good whiskies with huge potential are bottled at a low ABV is corporate greed. And it has become a bad habit in the industry to chill filter and add E150a.
      There will always be more than enough generic supermarket shelf whiskies bottled at 40%, and those are the brands many of the average consumers buy. But there are whiskies with a beautiful signature like Lagavulin who should be bottles at 46%, or Talisker which shouldn’t be chill filtered to death.

    Yes this is great stuff! I bought this bottle from them and shared it with some people who all enjoyed it very much! Still have about 10 cl so i will enjoy it a little slower. I tasted other expressions of Ardnamurchan and also great quality!

    Love what Ardnamurchan are doing. Did a blind tasting with friends not long back and it ranked slightly higher than a Redbreast 21 y/o. Need to get the cask strength version though! Amazing what they're doing for the age and price. The block chain technology is a great way to establish transparency and trust with customers too!

    Missed the boat on this one when it was first released. On Christmas Eve, I was in my local whisky shop in Shawlands and spied it in the corner of my eye. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful night tasting this nectar. Managed to nab another bottle a few days later which I am very very thankful for. So good to see Ardnamurchan doing everything with integrity. Those that aren't, won't be getting a penny from me. Leave it to the yuppies. Love the rants as always Ralphy.

    Great stuff as always Ralfy. Got a bottle of this tucked away for now, but it WILL be opened!😉Once your palate is used to natural colour, non-chill filtered and decent abv, you just won't want to go back. That is just a fact! You get more bang for your buck, end of! Cheers mate, take care!

    Very nice review. Hope more of their whisky makes it to the US. I got lucky and found one on my honeymoon and brought it home, was only about 65usd too. Was shocked! Thoroughly enjoy it too. Just bummed the QR code on my bottle doesn't work.

    An independent bottler should make a comparison-edition of a single malt, consisting of two bottles of 350 ml (or two bottles of 200 ml): one bottle non-chillfiltered bottled at 46%, the other chillfiltered and - also - bottled at 46%.
    Just a thought!

    Hello Ralfy! Thank you for your very informative videos! For those who believe chill filtration is good, they better have a taste of Talisker. The chill filtration just kills the spirit! This whisky has the power to be one of the best peated whisky but chill filtering just killing it(and the caramel added too)!

    Great review. Thanks Ralfy I got a 09.22 cask strength from a well reputed whisky store in South Africa. The chap said basically the same as you. Unfortunately (or fortunate for those in the know) no one locally here really knows the name Ardnamurchan. So the shelf was near full!!
    Looking forward to more reviews, especially if you do the 09.22 cask strength. Take care

    I found this to be a very difficult bottle to get hold of! And I was waiting for it to be released, checking online daily! I tasted it in September and it was my dram of the day at a whisky show! I’m glad do have one and I got lucky too!

    I joined a tasting event during a fair in Sweden a few years ago hosted by the fine and nice people of Ardnamuchan and Adelphi at a whim as I didn't know anything about them, and immediately fell in love with their wihiskies. Watching this vidieo I started to wonder why I do not buy any of my old favorite destillery (yes, it was Bowmore) whiskies any more and relized my whiskey journey has sailed passed that destination. And I like it! 🥰

    Ralfy you hit the nail on the head at 15:15... after researching, purchasing and tasting some quality bottles, a friend poured me a glass of Dalmore 12. I still consider myself a beginner, but you can smell and taste the difference in quality between something made for the mass market and something that was made for quality. D12 tasted like thin dirty water and had mouthfeel of it too...
    Thanks for helping me make my minimal budget for whisky go the distance ✌

    Philosophical....my best then would be a simple Macallan, when standard 12 was nectar still , Kames hotel ...having done a daft errand to move a classic yacht, Sonja, to a mooring there in december...setting off 1600 got there in the dark on a still, dank evening...the warmth of the bar and the smile i got from the barman as I unhesitatingly ordered a double Macallan make this the best in the known universe to me..❤🥃...shame they didnt just increase the price on the lower ages while keeping the full sherried quality.😢

    So much from this channel I have listened to, learned and quite literally proved in my own experience. I would suggest by analogy “organic” fruit and veg ie the way it was originally done ie properly! “organic”whisky follows suit, so presumably I’d think that back in the day, probably, the blends were made to allow maturation of the good stuff in the meantime… if there’s no scotch mist it’s not the same in my experience, thanks Ralfy, you have educated I’m sure a lot of us, to put it another way … let’s have some rushed mass produced veg whilst the good ones (aka organic !) are growing properly - my only concern with Ralfy is that he doesn’t have a warehouse of the good stuff (spring bank particularly!) he could sell us ! Maybe we’ll start to see and hear of “organic “ whisky!

    I have only been watching Ralfy videos for about 3 years. Ever since I started looking for bottles that say natural color and no chill filtration, my bottles have been better and the people I share them with have loved them as well.

    Yeah, Ive completely finished my bottle. It was a good dram, just not very memorable for me. A little too astringent even with water. Needs more maturation. Wouldn’t buy a second. 84/100 for me. Well worth trying it in a bar.

    I keep hearing about this distillery and would love to try their products. Hopefully, some of this whisky will find its way to southern California so that I can get my hands on it. I'll have to watch for it.
    Scotland really needs to tighten up its whisky laws. I don't think it matters as much for blends since they rely on a consistency in presentation, but coloring shouldn't be added to single malts. Even if it doesn't have a huge effect on the flavor, it still covers up important information. The color, along with the age statement, provides information on the activity of the casks. In this sense, I appreciate the whisky laws in the United States. Though some of the laws could stand to be made a bit less confusing and need to be tightened up in some areas, at least I know that when I see "straight" whisky, I know that I'm getting whisky without any additives, including coloring. "Bottled in bond" is even more stringent - those three words on the label tell me a lot about the whisky, and I actively seek out whisky with this designation. "Straight" or "bottled in bond," along with "non chill filtered" and information on where the whisky is distilled and bottled, are all that it takes to identify a proper integrity bottling in the United States.
    As for chill filtering, I would like to see it declared on the label, regardless of whether the whisky is made in Scotland, the United States, or elsewhere. I don't totally object to the use of the process, as it is used to create a style that some consumers expect, having it declared clearly on the label would help me decide which whisky I want to buy, and I have a strong preference for those that are not chill filtered, especially for pot still whiskies (it doesn't seem to have as great an effect on column still whiskies). I don't know what to do about other heavy forms of filtering; it would be hard to legally define that to the point that it could be added to a label. I guess we'll have to continue to rely on reviews and on our own experience to determine whether a whisky has been over-filtered.

    Ralfy, another fantastic review. You are right, we layman can't get a 58.2% bottle anywhere. How about the Ardnamurchan Single Malt AD(46.8% abv) or Ardnamurchan AD/04:21 Paul Launois Cask ? or Ardnamurchan AD/09.20:01. Thanks Malt mate

    I had never heard of Ardnamurchan until late last year....and a few months ago the Ardnamurchan AD/02:16 Cask 71, 1st fill Spanish Oak Oloroso Sherry Hogshead, PEATED, bottled at 57.8% ABV, became available at the local SAQ across the river in Quebec....so I bought one. comes in a dark blue coated bottle....but it has a couple of clear windows on the side, so you can look through the bottle and see the color of the whisky...unchill filtered and natural color. Havent opened it yet....just glad it was available and I got one! Bottle does say it was bottled exclusively for Quebec. Saving it for a rainy day!

    Hi Ralfy I know it is episode about Ardnamurchan... but recently i have noticed that Ledaig has only unchillfiltered note on the label... what about the colour? Sweet Baby Jesus are they going Dronach style? Any thoughts?

    Ralphy you have been found out! Apart from you being quite excited in the video, that bottle is nearly half. Those together tell me you really like this single malt. You also talk about experts, well the definition of an expert is an ex is a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure.
    Seriously though I can't buy this specific batch in this part of the world, but I can get the AD 04.22.02, and at a good price provided it is as good as the AD 10.22

    Ralfy, have you tried Bunnahbhain Stiuireadair? Un-chill filtered and natural colour that you can get in supermarkets such as ASDA for just over £30. It’s half decent stuff

    I had to dive in and have the AD/ 09:22 at 58.4% and I love it, sometimes taking the chance on a new distillery is a good thing 🙂
    However when it comes to a Madeira cask nothing will ever beat that 13 yr GlenMoray 🙂

    I haven't done any research, so I might be completely wrong here, but could it be that the 'AD' is just short for Anno Domini? It is followed by the bottling date, so that would make sense (sort of...). Just a thought ;)

    Another great review Ralfy. I love what Ardnamuchan are doing too but does anyone feel like it’s groundhog day again? It wasn’t that long ago that Kilchoman, and Glengyle were the new darlings of the whisky world doing everything right. I’d say Kilchoman is more Springbank in their production methods than Ardnamuchan, yet they get very little fan fair these days for that fact, in spite of their excellent whisky. Curious.

      Yes it's strange that Kilchoman have slightly slipped off the radar and that's something I've commented on recently. What's even more perplexing is that their whisky is getting better and better. Maybe it's something to do with Islay losing it's most favoured region status to Campbeltown, now that Glengyle, and especially Glen Scotia, are both producing outstanding whisky.

    I have a bottle of a Madeira rum, matured in Madeira wine casks from 15 years, cask strength. “970 rum”. Hope you are able to try it someday. Here’s my mention.

    Have you ever had the same whiskey before and after chill filtration to get a side by side comparison Ralfy? I’m not sure how you could do that but I’d love to see it.

      Glendronach 12 y o is a case in point. CF has stripped all the mouthful out of the dram imo. The taste is identical but seems thinner as less oils present to coat the tongue so less longevity in the finish. Industry uses CF to remove impurities to help standardise batch variation. It's a cheap and lazy fix by the distilleries involved who do this.

    I don´t care about the coloring. And by that I mean that I don’t care if the color is pale or light. I’ll rather have a light colored whiskey with no caramel added, than a dark fake colored one. I’ve only been an enthusiast for about 6 months now, but I have already started to ignore 40% whisky’s, chill filtered whisky’s and over priced big brands. My favorite distilleries at the moment is Adnamurchan, Clynelish and Deanston.

    I predict that in 5-10 years time the majority of bottles bought by real whisky enthusiasts will be from the new distilleries such as Ardnamurchan, Lochlea, Lindores, Kinsbarns, Wolfburn, Glen Wyvis, Lagg, Torabhaig, Raasay, Glasgow, Ardnahoe, etc, plus the slew of excellent new English distilleries.

    What is an "expert"? What do you have to have learned to be an "expert"? I mean in Whisky ...
    You certainly need an expert - i.e. someone who knows what they're doing - to make the wort/beer and turn it into a spirit.
    You certainly need an expert to chose the right casks to mature that spirit and turn it into a good Whisky.
    You certainly need an expert to vat and blend the spirits that make up a single malt (or blended malt, or even a blended Scotch) or chose the right casks that are worth selling as single casks.
    However, the expert for what happens on your tongue, what you like or not, what you find interesting or not - that expert are only you alone!
    And you can become more and more of an expert by tasting Whiskies and informing yourself how they are made.
    In that sense, you, Ralfy, are an expert. And since you know quite a bit, we all profit from your insights.

    I found as I've gone deeper in to my whiskey journey. I found myself gravitating to whiskeys that are a higher APV, non-chill filtered and natural coloured. This blogger should definitely be referred to as a propagandist. Non-chill filtering take so much flavoured away from the whiskey it's unsettling. The best comparison I've ever had was being able to compared a standard official bottling of Delmore port beside an independent bottling of Delmore matured in a port cast. There is no comparison between the two. The non-chill filtered independent bottling had such a deeper and more rich flavoured. What this independent bottler did was present Dalmore as it should be. Allowing the whiskey to express its fullness with more complexity. This was in large part due to the fact that the independent bottler didn't chill filter the whiskey kept it cast strength and didn't add any colourant.

    Hi Ralfy. The way you described this whiskey , super rich, super concentrated, kind of reminded me of a blender in the US named BARREL. Everything they put out there is presented at cask strength, non chill filtered and naturally colored. And I mean EVERYTHING they put out there. My first bottle from them was Barrel Seagrass , a blend of rye whiskeys. I never knew what an oily whiskey was until I tried this one. And you really feel like you’re tasting a whiskey concentrate, that’s how flavorful it is. I’m only mentioning this because I know every once and awhile you taste and review American whiskies, so if you ever get the chance …

    I tried the Balvenie 15 Madeira and felt a bit underwhelmed with it. It lacks flavor from the Madeira finish influence.

      @@ADSCPYes, it was the 14 that I tried, the ‘Caribbean Cask’. I think for quality Balvenie these days you’ve gotta go to auction, in recent times they just keep producing subpar bottlings.

      Perhaps because the bottle is technically a no age statement? But if their QR code works (it can be a bit flaky) you can get info about each cask that went into the batch. That includes the age. So maybe it’s a gray area for Ralfy’s system? It’s integrity enough for me.

    To fully comprehend the differences made when chill filtration and added colorant are used, I'd expect two bottles of the same spirit, one filtered and colored, and one not filtered nor colored, would be the way to discover the actual impact of the processes on our smell and taste experiences. A direct A-B comparison.
    You claim ANY bottle of whisky at high strength, unchill filtered and natural color, ignoring its age, origin, cask maturation, etc., will say all there is to be said on the subject. I doubt that. Despite your confidence in the procedure.

    To people in the industry who focus on Ralfy being "misinformed" - please realize, that at this point it doesn't matter what Ralfy thinks/says. The word is out, he is merely echoing what the multitudes think. No new distillery can hope to be taken seriously if they chill-filter and artificially tint their malt. Chill-filtration and coloring is why I don't buy Bowmore, Lagavulin, Macallan, Glenfarclas, etc. I've tried them, they are tasty distilleries and I want to like them but not gonna spend my money with that presentation (aka "blanded scotch whisky"). PLENTY of fish in the malt sea for my money. Please pay attention.

      All distilleries filter in some way. Depends on whether it is part of the distillation process itself or post distillation to protect discharge pumps or filtering out crud prior to loading storage tanks / tankers.

    So u gave this 85/100 at cask strengh natural col and unchill maderia finish. But u gave gave glenfiddich maderia 91/100 at 40% & chill filtered so u proved there point perfectly hahaha

    I don't know what compels bottlers to add the extra artificial color so much. I mean, cheap whisky, okay, consumers like to see intensity. But adding color to £60 or more expensive single malts? Seems dumb. Some of the best ones in my bar are very pale, and I couldn't care less about the color.
