@@robfut9954 It was just a joke, not to criticise Springbank. Springbank is rare because it's really good, has high demand and limited production. Macallan is "rare" because of marketing and - in my opinion- deliberate overpricing. They have a gigantic distillery, no real shortage there...

I’m grateful for Springbank’s commitment to tradition, it’s because of them we now have distillers like Nc’Nean, Daftmill, Rassay, Ardnahoe, Ardnamuchan, Dornoch, Bimber, and the many, many others around the world, confidently paving new roads in the craft whisky space. Distillers who one day will be looked at as the pinnacle artisans of craft whisky making. For those who appreciate a well crafted drop, there’s never been a greater time to be alive. We are literally spoiled for choice, and I am hopeful that one day in the not so distant future consumers overcome with FOMO will awaken to that fact and maybe, just maybe we will see a return of Springbank to shop shelves.

I'm listening to this sipping a Hazelburn 10. A short while ago it was nearly as easy to find as AnCnoc or Old Pulteney. Even after Springbank was picking up buzz, the Hazelburns, Kilkerrens and Longrows still flew under many people's radar. Sadly (or not surprisingly) those days are gone and now I sip it more slowly since I have no idea when I'll find another bottle.
I have no complaints, can't fault quality product. It just forces you to move on to the next available quality and value bottling. And when that one is 'discovered', then the next, and then the next.
    Whisky is an adventure.
(Now stay away from Craigellachie, it's pure rubbish, there is no reason anyone should buy it, just leave it on shelves where it belongs, there's nothing to be found in that bottle. I swear!)

Last September a rather expensive shop had a general discount (-15%). Without too much expectations I visited the shop. To my surprise there were two (!) bottles of Springbank 10 for € 59 a bottle (which is cheap as a bottle of Springbank 10 is normally between € 80-90 in the Netherlands). I asked whether the discount applied to all the bottles. It did. So, I had a bottle of Springbank 10 for only € 50 in a shop which charges in general way too much. By the way, I only took one bottle, leaving the other for another customer... In December I found another bottle of Springbank 10 in an other shop for, again, € 59. Also this time I left it for another maltmate, as I have 3/4 bottle of Springbank 10 left (and I prefer to vary as much as possible; I have never replaced a bottle yet).

Springbank is producing high quality whisky although manual work is not always the best. The thing is that it has become an investment for speculators. Most of the local barley bottlings will show up in auctions where people try to make money. And to be honest to pay 400 £ or even 1.000$ for a 10 yo local Barley is ridiculous and I am deeply in doubt whether the majority of Springbank customers are drinking the whisky or just consider it as an investment

I was walking through a popular liquor store in my hometown last week, and while strolling through the scotch section I saw Campbeltown Loch and Longrow on the shelf (at MSRP). No one else seemed to notice them and the employee did not even know what they were. Of course, when I asked, they searched their inventory and said that they did not have Springbank in. But I was bemused. Meanwhile all of the bourbon hunters were bustling in the aisle next, looking for Buffalo Trace allocations.

Been on the Springbank train for around a decade now and love they've stuck to making good whisky only and don't care about the rest of the stuff. I'm hearing about them cutting off a lot of long term stockists as of late though which is a bit worrying though. It's just the state of affairs now though that people only buy to sell unfortunately. You see stories of people doing 10 hour each way drives with 3 mates just to plunder the shop and the cage. No one's doing that to drink it.

Thank you very much Ralfy, I appreciate your perspective and insights on Springbank (and other distilleries). When I was first getting into single malt Scotch around 2005-ish, I wondered if Springbank was worth the extra $5-10/bottle (I was buying mostly $25-40 bottles at the time and wasn't yet paying attention to natural presentation). I've since learned the right answer from experience, but your insights provide a much richer context for me and others.

The battle between qualitiy and quantity has been one of my life defining struggles. As a die-hard quality chooser I feel like so many things I enjoy get encroached on by those that prefer quantity.
Worse I think people naturally want to consider themselves quality choosers rather than admit they will accept anything that caters to their quantity desires when there is nothing wrong with sometimes wanting something simple and easy to get and digest. And yes that requires my own self reflection on where I fall between quality and quantity.
The problem comes from quantity choosers suggesting that the mass produced easy thing deserves the recognition of the quality item.

Springbank has become the FOMO whisky of Scotland. Its a great whisky but the prices have surged. 3-4 years ago I got SB 10 for $50 US now its over $90 US if you can find it. It is searched out like some of the allocated bourbons like Pappy and Blantons and the shops keep it for their friends and high rollers. Wait for the big whisky crash and the social media posters go to the next big thing and then you'll be able to get it again at a reasonable price.

Well said Ralfy. By some miracle I picked up the 10, 15 and 18 at RRP from a very reputable online store last month (UK). It wasn't until late last year when I finished off my last 15 (bought Dec 2020) and went to replace it and found all of a sudden Springbank is now like gold dust. It's a shame that the reselling market have caught on to the prices some will pay, as it's a frustrating experience to buy a bottle.

Something that might, no, WILL annoy many whisky enthusiasts I’m sure, but I don’t see why Springbank exports as much as it does. Keeping sales local would help the local economy, and let’s face it, they’ll never have problems selling the stuff.

It's obvious that Springbank is producing good quality whisky. But I think the recent buying riot concerning all products coming from there is not only because people suddenly realized how good it is. The internet is also very good in creating me-too cascades. First the quality buyers are there, then others are noticing it and buy more and when a critical mass is reached so that the products are starting to get out of stock in some markets then many people, even some of them not even whisky lovers, simply jump on the bandwagon because of fear of missing out.

    Hi Ralfy,
I have an opinion too (yes, it truly is a valuable one), just saying, just sharin....
Ok so, just like you mentioned you have started to "differentiate" your malt marks, which is a good thing, because it makes it more measurable/tangible for us, there is however the other side of the coin which you are not touching on it at all, and in my opinion, it is truly unfair.
And that "topic" would be the topic of NAS whiskies.
I sincererely/genuinely believe that you should start reviewing NAS whiskies, given that ones which have an age label on them are becoming difficult to obtain or becoming too expensive.
I've tasted some seriously DAMN GOOD NAS, and I genuinely believe people are missing out on them.
List which I bought personally (and tasted too)?
    - Cask Strength Bimber
    - Arran Quarter Cask (The Bothy)
    - Isle of Raasay (lightly peated)
    - Longrow NV
    - Arran Bodega
    - Ardbeg Corryvreckan
    - Arran Amarone
    - Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011
Others which I have not personally bought, but I know for fact they are exceptional too:
    - GS Victoriana
    - Laphroaig Lore
    - Oban Little Bay
It's about time NAS get some love in this day and age of "quality" seeking...

It is interesting to compare to Blanton's which flies off the shelf.I am told it is not a good bourbon as it goes for crazy money on the secondary market..It is interesting that one is great whisky and the other is overhyped bourbon that is ordinary.

    • @heatherharrison264
      @heatherharrison264 Рік тому

Blanton's is good, but I don't think it stands out from the crowd. There are plenty of reasonably priced, readily available bourbons that are of comparable quality. I had a bottle of Blanton's in my collection before it gained its cult following. I paid about US$50 for it, and that is about what it is worth. I don't understand why people have gone completely nuts over it. These days, if I want it, a few of the bars in my area keep it in stock, and they don't charge much more for a pour than they do for the basic stuff. I've seen it in stores for around $200, which is ridiculous. There is quite a disconnect between retail price and bar price - this shows how messed up the bourbon market is.
Springbank, on the other hand, stands out from the crowd. I don't often see it in bars where I live, but the 10-year and 15-year can usually be found in stores, albeit at a price that is significantly higher than other whiskies of comparable age. I haven't seen the 12-year cask strength. If I'm going to pay a bit too much for a bottle of whisky, I'll leave Blanton's on the shelf and reach for Springbank instead. I have a 10-year currently. Maybe I'll replace it with a 15 after it runs out.

Hi Ralfy 2 years ago you said you wouldn't review Arran Quarter Cask because it's NAS which I respect. However it now states on the tin that it is in fact 9 years old, some of which will be fast years due to the nature of the small cask. Will you endeavour to review it now that there is a definitive age? I love the stuff and it is certainly better quality flavour than the 10 yo. Just more going on. It's also better than the NAS sherry version and the Sauternes imo having had them all. In fact I think it is more consistently good than the aberlour abunah. Thoughts?

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. It's got nothing to do with quality and everything to do with FOMO. The constant cycle of limited releases and whisky-lotteries is driving the demand. And in all honesty, I wouldn't at all be surprised to find that most of the bottles are being bought as investment objects, not for drinking.
Personally, I've gone from being a loyal customer to not having bought anything from them in several years. The quality simply isn't there any more. Not at the price they're asking. And now that they have cut all ties with local retailers... No, just no... I'm done with them.

Benromach standard bottlings are 43%. but the contrasts and the cask strength are all 46%+. And there is quite a bit of different finishes to choose from.

So many countries are proud and the people knowledgeable in general about their wines, vodkas, brandies etc. in Scotland it’s all about the shitty football, buckfast, bottom shelf vodka and all manner of low brow crap. No wonder Springbank export the majority of their production, the wide world can’t get enough of it. Ask the Scotsman to name ten scotch single malts in under a minute and they’d be hard pushed to give you five and Springbank wouldn’t be one of them.
