So sad to see this video. As a Chinese student studying abroad, I know how racism feels. A guy pointed in my face and said "COVID" to me in Chinatown (cause I was wearing a facemask), a place where I feel kind of safe. That's definitely the worst thing I have ever experienced. No one deserves this! There shall be no room for racism!!!
Great video, Aleese! As a Chinese I'm very very sorry to your experiences. I think you really hit the point when you say "they don't have the motivation to learn more and expand their mind". Generally there are two types of Chinese: those who are aware that they're being indoctrinated with BS and seek to explore more, and those who aren't (or don't care). For the latter, there is no motivation for them to get even a little more open-minded since it will not (in their narrow minds) benefits their living situation, given that they don't need to interact with foreigners on a daily basis. Besides, it makes them feel better about themselves to judge and look down upon someone else, though unwarrantedly and fatuously, and pathetic. Sorry for the mumbling, some of your encounters are just exasperating to hear. Anyway, love your videos! 💙

Oddly its always the uneducated ones, the same ones that fail to integrate outside of their circle when they somehow migrate to another country (china does send their citizen to alot of nations to set up businesses), yet one bad interaction overseas and they cry and rage via wechat lol

Whew - the guy who said he had no desire to learn Chinese is exactly how I felt during my time in Korea. It's so unfortunate. I'm moving to Shanghai in August for employment, so I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences.
No offense but your comment shows how ignorant you are about homogenous countries like China. They have close to 0% media or anything in education that teaches anything that's not Chinese. So ignorance is not "incredible", it's actually "expected." Is it sad? Yes, but this is what I found to be human nature. When a population is 99.999% homogenous, they won't waste any effort or energy to understand other races because they basically don't have to deal with any other races their whole lives. They don't care if someone outside the country think they are ignorant or sad because they won't have to interact with a foreigner their whole life. The most effort they will show is try to be polite, but rarely try to understand who you are. The society's status quo will not change for 0.0001% of the people living there, that'd be considered ridiculous. Conversely, if a person of a different ethnicity goes to a homogenous African nation or an Arab nation, they will also be reduced to whatever racial stereotypes is prevalent in the country and treated in manners they don't desire. In fact even in the good o'l USA that touts it's superior diversity, most non-Asians still have 0 understanding of Asians and their culture in the "21st" century. Blamed for COVID, hundreds of Asians were attacked and dozens were killed in the "racially enlightened" Western countries. Most of the attacked Asians were not even Chinese. The "educated" Western people can't even tell the difference between Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Pilipino, etc. and just attacked any Asian person while calling them Chinese/Chink. Talk about 21st Century ignorance in countries that are even more diversified than China.
Sorry to see some of your experiences. One of the most surreal things I have seen on my travels is Chinese prisoners being used for municipal and construction work in Angola. It’s something that I would love to investigate further but wouldn’t know where to start!

First of all, as Chinese person, I‘m really sorry for that. In terms of racism, I agree with everything you said in your video. But I still want to express a little bit of my thoughts (not sophistry, please don’t get me wrong): China has developed so fast in the last 40 years that people‘s perceptions and society’s perceptions are completely out of sync, it‘s like my parents and I are less than 30 years apart in age, but our philosophies can be said to be maybe 100 years apart. Not only in racism but in all aspects of life. Of course, I hope and think that this will change for the better.
I feel so sorry for the discrimination/micro aggressions you experience! It is so embarrassing to see the video of people getting the African kids to say those words and the mom teaching her daughter biased views! I’m sure there are plenty of Chinese people that criticise these behaviours but I just hope things completely change in my generation
Great video! The video of the mom talking to her kid to not interact with Black people hurts my heart to see because it seems like they've taken notice to the rise of hate crimes against Asians in western countries and how western media has consistently highlighted Black perpetrators in these types of crimes, though it is most definitely not only Black people who are doing this. I think this is the case because people in China tend to put more trust in western news sources than domestic news sources but I think that when they realize that western news only serves to polarize and divide people rather than to provide unbiased information and facts that we can move forward together without hate.
It was like that long before the media put attention of the Asian hate crimes in the West. This isn't a reaction to anything but a perpetuation of what was already going on.

@@yangyang-ut6rk There is some truth in what you say, but from what I have seen and experienced in China, speaking the language is not good enough as it is virtually impossible to overcome institutional racism, without ACTIVE government intervention from the top at all levels, in schools, industry, media, finance, fintech, etc.!! Look at the REPEATED use of "black face" skits in China's CCTV Spring Festival Gala show, 央视春晚 (Yāngshì chūnwǎn), as seen at the start of this vlog. Many people (foreigners especially) have complained to their own govts and to the Chinese govt. about the continued use of this form of comedy but the powers that be in CCTV allow it to continue. Also, while laws exist in China that prohibit racism for example in hiring, the enforcement mechanism is risible. This has to change and in a police state like China this could change with better education of the people and legal and financial penalties against offenders.

Sometimes it feels weird that old stereotypes from 60+ years ago still exist and are still relevand today. But it's a huge inspiration when you also hear the positive sites. I understand discrimination can be horrible. I was born and raised in Costa Rica as a Chinese person here I was harassed and teased by both adults and children alike and it still happens to me, perhaps a little less than growing up. This could be because Korean culture is more popular now and China is powerful. Growing up I would always hear remarks about my eyes and how China was bad and poor. Discrimination will happen anywhere in the world and it’s not unique to the black experience. Latinos also feel as though they are superior to Chinese Latinos and we are still treated as outsiders and uncultured, as the people who can only take care of serving them food or selling them groceries in little corner shops. We are not seen as people capable of being professionals in other areas. Most people don’t understand the difficulties of immigrating to a new country especially one where you’re all alone and need to learn and new language and adapt to a new culture. Many people who came here from China were escaping poverty, my family included. I’m not sure what Costa Rican families say about Chinese people in the privacy of their homes but I’m sure many people have negative and ignorant things to say about us considering the treatment I have had my entire life and the fact that young children feel the need to gossip amongst themselves and stare at my family as though we were zoo animals. I can tell you it stems from a lack of exposure to people who are different and also ignorance. It’s not just Chinese people who will discriminate, Korea and Japan will not be a utopian experience to Black people either. White people are treated better and with more respect that the Chinese in China. I can vouch for that because I went to university in China and white people were revered. I grew up speaking both Spanish and English at a native level and I couldn’t get a job teaching English. However, African people with less than half perfect English had absolutely no problem getting the same job I was applying for. No matter what I wouldn’t get the same recognition as any foreigner, whether black or white, it didn’t matter. So Chinese people discriminate against people they have had less exposure to, they also discriminate against their own. I was never considered a foreigner in China and never did I feel the same respect as other foreigners. It was a battle trying to both fit in but also trying to get people to acknowledge that I had a distinct cultural background that no amount of ignorance could erase. Chinese people aren’t inherently bad. It’s part of human nature and I’m sure Chinese people the world over have and continue to experience sinophobia, in Latin America, Africa, everywhere. The more people become educated the less need there will be to reject the unknown or to project a false sense of superiority over others in an attempt to soothe our own insecurities.

Aleese, thank you and your guests for making this great video! I can totally understand Tevin that he’d rather not speak Chinese so he does not have to understand what others say about him. It can be a curse to be able to read Chinese, as there are so many racist/hateful comments about black people ( or any non-Chinese) on Chinese social media. Chinese social media is heavily censored, however, anti-foreigner comments are not policed/removed. There is no free speech in China, but racist hate speech is very free. The Chinese government actually often encourages xenophobia ( for example, scapegoating foreigners for Covid) as ‘patriotism and national pride’. I really appreciate your positive energy and attitude! You are doing great work to give your students the opportunity to interact with people of different races, and to open their minds and hearts.
First，we can't tell those comments from real person or robot or people hired by someone to make conflict on purpose（for some political reasons ， for example the more Chinese cooperate with Africa，the more they want to divide people）.And then it could be a rare and strange point of view😂，I think western media platforms are the ones that really don't have freedom of speech and they cover it bup pretty well（or it's truely free but meaningless）.

Sorry for what you all have experienced in China. I hope as China further opens up more to the world, more and more people will learn the importance of respecting cultural and ethnic differences, and will change some of their inappropriate behaviors. Your story recalls what I had experienced in San Francisco-far beyond microagessions: One day, in front of me, an African American mom intensionally repeated this to her 8-9ish years old daughter, “Chinese people eat rats. They are horrible….” ….When I sat my 79-year-old father in the front seat (for seniors and disables)on a bus, next to a mid age African American man, the man started to get fussy and yelled at my dad, “Why you sit here?!” he acted out frustratedly and kept complaining. The poor old man didn’t understand him but felt unsafe. What I did was the same as what some of you did in China. I comforted my dad, “Ignore him. You’ll be OK. He can’t do anything to you…” ……Another day, when I walked on Market St, I got a harsh, random hit on my shoulder by a black young man, who walked pass by me from the opposite direction. We never met, don’t know the reason…but he continued to walk on, pretended nothing happened……I think hearing other people’s experiences or watching videos about how people was mistreated in the the western countries might influence how some Chinese people react to certain things. Discrimination/racism could happen to any color people but should not have a place anywhere in the world, it does hurt! Of course I do have some black coworkers that I get along with very well here in SF.
Thanks Aleese! Most of the negatives that I heard on the video about racism in China I’ve experienced here in my homeland of America…either overtly or covertly. Professionally, micro aggressive racism occurs daily in America. As I begin my global travels I’ll be curious whether the racism that I experience abroad will be “worse” than what African Americans experience in the U.S.
100% agree. The difference? -- Microagressions can happen 15 times in one day, and then 20 times the next day, and 50 times when you travel. The frequency in which you have to deal with and eventually internalize these aggressions is literally NON-STOP. And that can make you never want to go outside. OR make it very hard to see the good in the place or the people. Plus, in China, there are no repercussions for people's discriminatory behavior. If you complain to HR about a co-worker, Chinese or not, harassing you because of your race, nothing will be done. If the Chinese parents of your school are complaining you're too Black, then your class schedule gets reduced and you start losing money. No one has your back and you don't have a voice.

I'm really sorry for what you guys experienced. I think a part of the reasons might come from news (crimes, Asian hate). Also, most of the cities are not very diverse and at the same time some people have less awareness of their bad behaviors or they are not open-minded enough. Moreover, the culture of east Asian would prefer white/bright color(skin), it's very obvious if you see those beauty ads. It's a long way to go to get rid of these stereotypes from their minds. I believe there are more and more nice people who will think outside of the box and be respectful, especially the young generation like those kids you are teaching. im here now, ( donguan) I agree with a lot of this. This is actually why I looked this video up. Some to most people are nice, the children are nice and straw and waive, so there seems to be hope for the future, but yes, they even bleach their skin here, even though they are already pale. I like the other guy do not desire to learn the language either because you do feel the racisism, I've been here for a month and have 2 more months to go and I have yet to see even 1 other black person here.

The sad truth is, that the Chinese society is an intolerant society, minorities which don’t fit in the majority are been labeled as wrong, not welcomed and not normal and not good. Meaning people from the country side working in big cities are people second class, overweight people are openly discriminated on the street and most of the disabled people are not seen in the public because they are a shame to their families. I’m a Chinese I know what I’m talking about. I hope the Chinese society will change over time to the better…

As someone who has done intensive research on that specific BBC video its def propaganda, the main blog post they chose literally was criticizing that clip in that screenshot 7:36, and "HeiGui" is not the N word, the N word comes with the historical context of slavery of Black folks, which has nothing to do with China, "Gui" became a slang word for foreigners when China was colonized by over a dozen foreign countries for hundreds of years, it's not specifically for Black ppl, for example YangGui RiBenGui etc, its sorta like the Chinese version of the word colonizer, granted its not nice, but its also used JiuGui YanGui (drinkers, smokers), it really doesn't mean much nowadays. 8:03 This scene is just borderline propaganda, the messages varies from "Happy New Year" to "China Ethiopia Friendship Forever" to "Congratz on your 30s Birthday, you old lol".... Not to mention those types of videos are never popular or mainstream, its like picking the most extreme twitter posts and saying it's a nationwide phenomenon. The Chinese mom teaching her kid video was 100% racist and wrong, a little bit of background: Republicans were losing control of cov1d and made a specific plan to blame China, Trump started to call cov1d Chinese Virus and normalized it, anti-Asian hate crimes in the US surged 480% within the span of weeks, and right wingers even further capitalized it by plastering videos of assault of Asians from ONLY Black Americans all across Twitter and Facebook to sow racial divide against the backdrop of George Floyd protests. That specific "we are Chinese, they attacked us" rhetoric was spread into China from propagandized Chinese expats in America. Not saying it's an excuse for what the mom did, it's just those type of stuff usually doesn't come out of the vacuum, geopolitics and history are the key to the puzzle. China has colorism, but its not racial discrimination, its class discrimination, China even just 20 years ago was still just an agrarian society, having fair skin means you are high class working indoors, having darker skin means you are a peasant farmer working the field. Thats why darker Chinese ppl themselves are being looked down upon by other Chinese ppl especially in elder generations. Its also the same reason why Chinese people worship Europe and the US, not because they are white, because they are rich. The downside of moving out of poverty is it pretty much guarantees you to be the most materialistic a-hole around XD The "foreigners bringing in cov1d" thing, now, that's a real xenophobic discrimination. Its true most cases came from aboard, but it was actually just Chinese expats came back into China bring in cov1d, the fact most Chinese media outlets ran those stories without clarifying that point is so fking irresponsible. At the end of the day, the racism in China at the core is not malicious, 99.9% ppl just never had the chance to interact with other races, is the curiosity and bluntness annoying? Yes. Is it a similar type of "you are fundamentally a lesser human being" white supremacist racism? Not really. The good news is geopolitics indicates China is opening up more and more to Africa because of the decoupling with the US, to open up trade and travel with African countries the Chinese government is going to have to launch anti-racism campaigns specifically targeted at anti-black racism, yes not all black folks are Africans, but geopolitical policies like that will benefit the perceived group as a whole, the future is going to be very interesting.

What about the bus of black nba players being attacked and called the nword? Chinese are not stupid, they consume western media and understand the social aspect of words, can show many other videos depicting the same behavior for example a streamer asking someone if "they are from america and are they black, then mentioned the nword" and when advised that it was not ok, went on a nationalist rant. So the Chinese don't understand the impact of their behavior is nonsense, these attitudes are not common to white foreigners as Chinese (most asians) have an inferior complex around whites, i mean the white media is the one that has consistently mocked and perpetrated racial Chinese narrative, yet its the minorities that get the backlash, this attitude is also seen with Mexicans (who Americans been hating for years and portray them as criminals) mistreating minorities, media programming and self hate is a mofo. Its not like blacks caused millions of death via the opium crisis 😵

I came across this and other similar videos because I was considering accepting a university teaching job in China. This is such an eye opener! It makes more sense now why most of the racism I have faced as a Black Canadian in Canada came from Asians, including Asian students. Very unfortunate how the media in China is propagating racism against Blacks. I can't believe Blacks are not allowed in some places in China! Talk about making today's Black people suffer what the older generations suffered in the States!

This video was so good and I really appreciate all the different perspectives provided! The only small constructive critique I would offer is I think you should be really careful about using western media like BBC and NBC. These western media are very well know for producing negative propaganda against china because the west sees china as a hostile competitor. So even if what they are reporting is true it is hard to trust from that source. But I 100% trust all the real people that contributed to this video and you have my sincere thanks for sharing this with the world. Like you I hope china will grow out of this unfortunate phase.
This is a big concern for me too as my skin color is Black like an average Bangladeshi people. I have an opportunity to settle in China with a job. Will it be tougher for me to find some real life friends there to overcome my loneliness?
One thing you probably want to know is, discrimination is embedded in Chinese culture. They don't just discriminate against black people, they even discriminate among themselves (e.g. against women, the poor, people with disabilities, etc.), and they are NOT subtle about it. I know this because I'm Chinese...
Atleast nobody insults you with the N-word or shouts "Go back to your country" at you on the street, which is something an Asian international student would experience atleast once or twice during their stay in the States. I used to be an international student studying in New York City and I got called a "chink" by random black guys in the metro station atleast twice while I was just checking on my phone and minding my own business, and that was before the pandemic happened. Another time when I was walking around 125th Street in Manhattan, some random black guy came up to me and kept yelling Nihao at me before eventually throwing that classical "Go back to China" line😅

Nonsense. I'm from NY. I've been called the N word in China town. While walking with my Chinese girlfriend at the time. As a matter of fact, I got stopped by a Chinese cop in NY for no reason other than being with my girlfriend. He asked her in Chinese" what are you doing with this N word? First, he didn't know I understood Haka and secondly, I was a NY police officer in flushing Queens at the time. I had his supervisor of the 5th precinct show up and he was suspended. Hi Aleese, could you pleasedo an interview with Black people who can speak fluent Chinese and work in China? I think understanding the local language would greatly improve one's experience in China. Being able to communicate in Chinese is also critical to improve mutual understanding and respect and to educate the less informed locals.
So maybe you missed that Lwazi, in the yellow shirt, speaks fluent Chinese and said that. Also, Noel in the white shirt is also fluent in Chinese and mentioned that. You can look at both of their channels, link in the description to learn more about their lives. I know that it is easy to think that if we all speak the same language then we won't have "misunderstandings about each other." But guess what, it doesn't matter if I can speak Chinese or not, when a job description is saying "WHITE ONLY" Being able to accept and respect and get to know people that are different from you is what can improve mutual understanding.
Here in the Philippines, we literally call black people "negro or egoy" whenever we see one but not to their faces though. Yeah many are ignorant but many are also "it's just what we call them" kind of thing. Note that we see black people all the time on tv because of NBA.

Sorry to break your bubble but real racist are not rare and people can be very malicious. I think there were SEVERAL examples of that in the video. Curious people do not complain about their black neighbors and get them evicted. The police or landlords who help remove black people from their homes that they legally live in are not just curious. It's perfectly normal to admit that ALL people can be racists...even Chinese.

Our teacher told us, especially the girls, not to trust black international students too much regarding safety. The videos of the African children saying disparaging things about themselves in Chinese made my blood boil. There's a special place in Hell for people who make those videos. Being black means you gotta have tough skin. It really is us against the world. This video was painful to watch, but I'm glad you also have good experiences being in China.
There is wealth discrimination, regional discrimination, height discrimination, and skin color discrimination (because Chinese people like white skin) in China. These discriminations are mild, and they are nothing compared to the treatment of yellow-skinned people in the United States. But there is no racial discrimination in China, so don't elevate skin color discrimination to racial discrimination. China itself is a multi-ethnic and multi-racial country, and all races are equal in China. Also, don't talk nonsense if you don't understand Chinese culture.

Great video, Aleese! As a Chinese I'm very very sorry to your experiences. I think you really hit the point when you say "they don't have the motivation to learn more and expand their mind". Generally there are two types of Chinese: those who are aware that they're being indoctrinated with BS and seek to explore more, and those who aren't (or don't care). For the latter, there is no motivation for them to get even a little more open-minded since it will not (in their narrow minds) benefits their living situation, given that they don't need to interact with foreigners on a daily basis. No offense but your comment shows how ignorant you are about homogenous countries like China. They have close to 0% media or anything in education that teaches anything that's not Chinese. So ignorance is not "incredible", it's actually "expected." Is it sad? Yes, but this is what I found to be human nature. When a population is 99.999% homogenous, they won't waste any effort or energy to understand other races because they basically don't have to deal with any other races their whole lives. They don't care if someone outside the country think they are ignorant or sad because they won't have to interact with a foreigner their whole life. The most effort they will show is try to be polite, but rarely try to understand who you are. The society's status quo will not change for 0.0001% of the people living there, that'd be considered ridiculous. Conversely, if a person of a different ethnicity goes to a homogenous African nation or an Arab nation, they will also be reduced to whatever racial stereotypes is prevalent in the country and treated in manners they don't desire. In fact even in the good o'l USA that touts it's superior diversity, most non-Asians still have 0 understanding of Asians and their culture in the "21st" century. Blamed for COVID, hundreds of Asians were attacked and dozens were killed in the "racially enlightened" Western countries. Most of the attacked Asians were not even Chinese. The "educated" Western people can't even tell the difference between Koreans, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Pilipino, etc. and just attacked any Asian person while calling them Chinese/Chink. Talk about 21st Century ignorance in countries that are even more diversified than China.
Sorry to see some of your experiences. One of the most surreal things I have seen on my travels is Chinese prisoners being used for municipal and construction work in Angola. It’s something that I would love to investigate further but wouldn’t know where to start!

First of all, as Chinese person, I‘m really sorry for that. In terms of racism, I agree with everything you said in your video. But I still want to express a little bit of my thoughts (not sophistry, please don’t get me wrong): China has developed so fast in the last 40 years that people‘s perceptions and society’s perceptions are completely out of sync, it‘s like my parents and I are less than 30 years apart in age, but our philosophies can be said to be maybe 100 years apart. Not only in racism but in all aspects of life. Of course, I hope and think that this will change for the better.
I feel so sorry for the discrimination/micro aggressions you experience! It is so embarrassing to see the video of people getting the African kids to say those words and the mom teaching her daughter biased views!

The video of the mom talking to her kid to not interact with Black people hurts my heart to see because it seems like they've taken notice to the rise of hate crimes against Asians in western countries and how western media has consistently highlighted Black perpetrators in these types of crimes, though it is most definitely not only Black people who are doing this. I think this is the case because people in China tend to put more trust in western news sources than domestic news sources but I think that when they realize that western news only serves to polarize and divide people rather than to provide unbiased information and facts that we can move forward together without hate.
It was like that long before the media put attention of the Asian hate crimes in the West. This isn't a reaction to anything but a perpetuation of what was already going on.

@@yangyang-ut6rk There is some truth in what you say, but from what I have seen and experienced in China, speaking the language is not good enough as it is virtually impossible to overcome institutional racism, without ACTIVE government intervention from the top at all levels, in schools, industry, media, finance, fintech, etc.!! Look at the REPEATED use of "black face" skits in China's CCTV Spring Festival Gala show, 央视春晚 (Yāngshì chūnwǎn), as seen at the start of this vlog. Many people (foreigners especially) have complained to their own govts and to the Chinese govt. about the continued use of this form of comedy but the powers that be in CCTV allow it to continue. Also, while laws exist in China that prohibit racism for example in hiring, the enforcement mechanism is risible. This has to change and in a police state like China this could change with better education of the people and legal and financial penalties against offenders.

I understand discrimination can be horrible. I was born and raised in Costa Rica as a Chinese person here I was harassed and teased by both adults and children alike and it still happens to me, perhaps a little less than growing up. This could be because Korean culture is more popular now and China is powerful. Growing up I would always hear remarks about my eyes and how China was bad and poor. Discrimination will happen anywhere in the world and it’s not unique to the black experience. Latinos also feel as though they are superior to Chinese Latinos and we are still treated as outsiders and uncultured, as the people who can only take care of serving them food or selling them groceries in little corner shops. We are not seen as people capable of being professionals in other areas. Most people don’t understand the difficulties of immigrating to a new country especially one where you’re all alone and need to learn and new language and adapt to a new culture. Many people who came here from China were escaping poverty, my family included. I’m not sure what Costa Rican families say about Chinese people in the privacy of their homes but I’m sure many people have negative and ignorant things to say about us considering the treatment I have had my entire life and the fact that young children feel the need to gossip amongst themselves and stare at my family as though we were zoo animals. I can tell you it stems from a lack of exposure to people who are different and also ignorance. It’s not just Chinese people who will discriminate, Korea and Japan will not be a utopian experience to Black people either. White people are treated better and with more respect that the Chinese in China. I can vouch for that because I went to university in China and white people were revered. I grew up speaking both Spanish and English at a native level and I couldn’t get a job teaching English. However, African people with less than half perfect English had absolutely no problem getting the same job I was applying for. No matter what I wouldn’t get the same recognition as any foreigner, whether black or white, it didn’t matter. So Chinese people discriminate against people they have had less exposure to, they also discriminate against their own. I was never considered a foreigner in China and never did I feel the same respect as other foreigners. It was a battle trying to both fit in but also trying to get people to acknowledge that I had a distinct cultural background that no amount of ignorance could erase. Chinese people aren’t inherently bad. It’s part of human nature and I’m sure Chinese people the world over have and continue to experience sinophobia, in Latin America, Africa, everywhere. The more people become educated the less need there will be to reject the unknown or to project a false sense of superiority over others in an attempt to soothe our own insecurities.

I can totally understand Tevin that he’d rather not speak Chinese so he does not have to understand what others say about him. It can be a curse to be able to read Chinese, as there are so many racist/hateful comments about black people ( or any non-Chinese) on Chinese social media. Chinese social media is heavily censored, however, anti-foreigner comments are not policed/removed. There is no free speech in China, but racist hate speech is very free. The Chinese government actually often encourages xenophobia ( for example, scapegoating foreigners for Covid) as ‘patriotism and national pride’.
I really appreciate your positive energy and attitude! You are doing great work to give your students the opportunity to interact with people of different races, and to open their minds and hearts.

Sorry for what you all have experienced in China. I hope as China further opens up more to the world, more and more people will learn the importance of respecting cultural and ethnic differences, and will change some of their inappropriate behaviors. Your story recalls what I had experienced in San Francisco-far beyond microagessions: One day, in front of me, an African American mom intensionally repeated this to her 8-9ish years old daughter, “Chinese people eat rats. They are horrible….” ….When I sat my 79-year-old father in the front seat (for seniors and disables)on a bus, next to a mid age African American man, the man started to get fussy and yelled at my dad, “Why you sit here?!” he acted out frustratedly and kept complaining. The poor old man didn’t understand him but felt unsafe. What I did was the same as what some of you did in China. I comforted my dad, “Ignore him. You’ll be OK. He can’t do anything to you…” ……Another day, when I walked on Market St, I got a harsh, random hit on my shoulder by a black young man, who walked pass by me from the opposite direction. We never met, don’t know the reason…but he continued to walk on, pretended nothing happened……I think hearing other people’s experiences or watching videos about how people was mistreated in the the western countries might influence how some Chinese people react to certain things. Discrimination/racism could happen to any color people but should not have a place anywhere in the world, it does hurt! Of course I do have some black coworkers that I get along with very well here in SF.

Thanks Aleese! Most of the negatives that I heard on the video about racism in China I’ve experienced here in my homeland of America…either overtly or covertly. Professionally, micro aggressive racism occurs daily in America. As I begin my global travels I’ll be curious whether the racism that I experience abroad will be “worse” than what African Americans experience in the U.S.
100% agree.
The difference? -- Microagressions can happen 15 times in one day, and then 20 times the next day, and 50 times when you travel. The frequency in which you have to deal with and eventually internalize these aggressions is literally NON-STOP. And that can make you never want to go outside. OR make it very hard to see the good in the place or the people.
Plus, in China, there are no repercussions for people's discriminatory behavior. If you complain to HR about a co-worker, Chinese or not, harassing you because of your race, nothing will be done. If the Chinese parents of your school are complaining you're too Black, then your class schedule gets reduced and you start losing money. No one has your back and you don't have a voice.

I'm really sorry for what you guys experienced.
I think a part of the reasons might come from news (crimes, Asian hate). Also, most of the cities are not very diverse and at the same time some people have less awareness of their bad behaviors or they are not open-minded enough. Moreover, the culture of east Asian would prefer white/bright color(skin), it's very obvious if you see those beauty ads. It's a long way to go to get rid of these stereotypes from their minds.
I believe there are more and more nice people who will think outside of the box and be respectful, especially the young generation like those kids you are teaching.

Some to most people are nice, the children are nice and straw and waive, so there seems to be hope for the future, but yes, they even bleach their skin here, even though they are already pale. I like the other guy do not desire to learn the language either because you do feel the racisism, I've been here for a month and have 2 more months to go and I have yet to see even 1 other black person here.

The sad truth is, that the Chinese society is an intolerant society, minorities which don’t fit in the majority are been labeled as wrong, not welcomed and not normal and not good. Meaning people from the country side working in big cities are people second class, overweight people are openly discriminated on the street and most of the disabled people are not seen in the public because they are a shame to their families. I’m a Chinese I know what I’m talking about. I hope the Chinese society will change over time to the better…

As someone who has done intensive research on that specific BBC video its def propaganda, the main blog post they chose literally was criticizing that clip in that screenshot 7:36, and "HeiGui" is not the N word, the N word comes with the historical context of slavery of Black folks, which has nothing to do with China, "Gui" became a slang word for foreigners when China was colonized by over a dozen foreign countries for hundreds of years, it's not specifically for Black ppl, for example YangGui RiBenGui etc, its sorta like the Chinese version of the word colonizer, granted its not nice, but its also used JiuGui YanGui (drinkers, smokers), it really doesn't mean much nowadays. 8:03 This scene is just borderline propaganda, the messages varies from "Happy New Year" to "China Ethiopia Friendship Forever" to "Congratz on your 30s Birthday, you old lol".... Not to mention those types of videos are never popular or mainstream, its like picking the most extreme twitter posts and saying it's a nationwide phenomenon.
The Chinese mom teaching her kid video was 100% racist and wrong, a little bit of background: Republicans were losing control of cov1d and made a specific plan to blame China, Trump started to call cov1d Chinese Virus and normalized it, anti-Asian hate crimes in the US surged 480% within the span of weeks, and right wingers even further capitalized it by plastering videos of assault of Asians from ONLY Black Americans all across Twitter and Facebook to sow racial divide against the backdrop of George Floyd protests. That specific "we are Chinese, they attacked us" rhetoric was spread into China from propagandized Chinese expats in America. Not saying it's an excuse for what the mom did, it's just those type of stuff usually doesn't come out of the vacuum, geopolitics and history are the key to the puzzle.
China has colorism, but its not racial discrimination, its class discrimination, China even just 20 years ago was still just an agrarian society, having fair skin means you are high class working indoors, having darker skin means you are a peasant farmer working the field. Thats why darker Chinese ppl themselves are being looked down upon by other Chinese ppl especially in elder generations. Its also the same reason why Chinese people worship Europe and the US, not because they are white, because they are rich. The downside of moving out of poverty is it pretty much guarantees you to be the most materialistic a-hole around XD
The "foreigners bringing in cov1d" thing, now, that's a real xenophobic discrimination. Its true most cases came from aboard, but it was actually just Chinese expats came back into China bring in cov1d, the fact most Chinese media outlets ran those stories without clarifying that point is so fking irresponsible.
At the end of the day, the racism in China at the core is not malicious, 99.9% ppl just never had the chance to interact with other races, is the curiosity and bluntness annoying? Yes. Is it a similar type of "you are fundamentally a lesser human being" white supremacist racism? Not really. The good news is geopolitics indicates China is opening up more and more to Africa because of the decoupling with the US, to open up trade and travel with African countries the Chinese government is going to have to launch anti-racism campaigns specifically targeted at anti-black racism, yes not all black folks are Africans, but geopolitical policies like that will benefit the perceived group as a whole, the future is going to be very interesting.

Chinese are not stupid, they consume western media and understand the social aspect of words, can show many other videos depicting the same behavior for example a streamer asking someone if "they are from america and are they black, then mentioned the nword" and when advised that it was not ok, went on a nationalist rant. So the Chinese don't understand the impact of their behavior is nonsense, these attitudes are not common to white foreigners as Chinese (most asians) have an inferior complex around whites, i mean the white media is the one that has consistently mocked and perpetrated racial Chinese narrative, yet its the minorities that get the backlash, this attitude is also seen with Mexicans (who Americans been hating for years and portray them as criminals) mistreating minorities, media programming and self hate is a mofo. I came across this and other similar videos because I was considering accepting a university teaching job in China. This is such an eye opener! It makes more sense now why most of the racism I have faced as a Black Canadian in Canada came from Asians, including Asian students. Very unfortunate how the media in China is propagating racism against Blacks. I can't believe Blacks are not allowed in some places in China! Talk about making today's Black people suffer what the older generations suffered in the States!

The only small constructive critique I would offer is I think you should be really careful about using western media like BBC and NBC. These western media are very well know for producing negative propaganda against china because the west sees china as a hostile competitor. So even if what they are reporting is true it is hard to trust from that source. But I 100% trust all the real people that contributed to this video and you have my sincere thanks for sharing this with the world. Like you I hope china will grow out of this unfortunate phase.

This is a big concern for me too as my skin color is Black like an average Bangladeshi people. I have an opportunity to settle in China with a job. Will it be tougher for me to find some real life friends there to overcome my loneliness?
One thing you probably want to know is, discrimination is embedded in Chinese culture. They don't just discriminate against black people, they even discriminate among themselves (e.g. against women, the poor, people with disabilities, etc.), and they are NOT subtle about it. Atleast nobody insults you with the N-word or shouts "Go back to your country" at you on the street, which is something an Asian international student would experience atleast once or twice during their stay in the States. I used to be an international student studying in New York City and I got called a "chink" by random black guys in the metro station atleast twice while I was just checking on my phone and minding my own business, and that was before the pandemic happened. Another time when I was walking around 125th Street in Manhattan, some random black guy came up to me and kept yelling Nihao at me before eventually throwing that classical "Go back to China" line😅

Nonsense. I'm from NY. I've been called the N word in China town. While walking with my Chinese girlfriend at the time. As a matter of fact, I got stopped by a Chinese cop in NY for no reason other than being with my girlfriend. He asked her in Chinese" what are you doing with this N word? First, he didn't know I understood Haka and secondly, I was a NY police officer in flushing Queens at the time. I had his supervisor of the 5th precinct show up and he was suspended. Hi Aleese, could you pleasedo an interview with Black people who can speak fluent Chinese and work in China? I think understanding the local language would greatly improve one's experience in China. Being able to communicate in Chinese is also critical to improve mutual understanding and respect and to educate the less informed locals.
So maybe you missed that Lwazi, in the yellow shirt, speaks fluent Chinese and said that. Also, Noel in the white shirt is also fluent in Chinese and mentioned that. You can look at both of their channels, link in the description to learn more about their lives.
I know that it is easy to think that if we all speak the same language then we won't have "misunderstandings about each other." But guess what, it doesn't matter if I can speak Chinese or not, when a job description is saying "WHITE ONLY"
Being able to accept and respect and get to know people that are different from you is what can improve mutual understanding.

Sorry to break your bubble but real racist are not rare and people can be very malicious. I think there were SEVERAL examples of that in the video. Curious people do not complain about their black neighbors and get them evicted. The police or landlords who help remove black people from their homes that they legally live in are not just curious.

These discriminations are mild, and they are nothing compared to the treatment of yellow-skinned people in the United States. But there is no racial discrimination in China, so don't elevate skin color discrimination to racial discrimination. China itself is a multi-ethnic and multi-racial country, and all races are equal in China. Also, don't talk nonsense if you don't understand Chinese culture.

Umm as an avid watcher of Chinese dramas, I think I should stop. I don’t want anyone propagating these type of negative stereotypes and racism profiting from me. Africa should also seriously understand how the Chinese are demeaning their people and consider that when considering allowing them to operate in their countries.
