Okay so I think I can sum up the video for those who don't feel like watching till the end: deescalation should take priority over violence; wearing a thick winter coat can make your chokes less effective; grappling can be ideal for 1 on 1 fights but striking is better if you are outnumbered; and if you ever really want to show Firas Zahabi something on your phone, make sure you're not in Canada.
I glanced over the thick winter coat issue, which I probably shouldn’t, especially since I live in an area with cold winters. Wearing one can be a positive if you can easily Deescalate the other person, as the choke won’t be as effective. If they aren’t letting up, take the heavy jacket off and carefully choke them out, and hope that you have a sweater underneath Lol
I always wondered what it would be like if you used someone's winter coat like a lapel and choked them out with it, would it be possible or not depending on the frabic lol.
“Well, Your Honour, he asked me to have a look at his phone. It was at that point that I was forced to defend myself, throwing a right hand and knocking my assailant unconscious. God bless Canada.”
The minute someone enters your personal space after you’ve repeatedly, consistently and explicitly made it clear you don’t want to interact with them, there is a threat of violence and you should have the right to defend yourself. This applies double in the case of women.
here is the problem.....the word escalation......if someone swings on you.....they have poven they cant control themselves and anyone who cant control themselves is capable of anything so there really is no escalation form there.......you dont know their intention and even if they just want to show how tough they are they could still serious injure or kill you even if not the intention....im not canadian but american so not sure over there....but laws are not made for self defense or even the right thing but they are there to simply have these situations avoided and they dont really care if you individually get hurt because it is considered best for society if laws are like this.....but if you do happen to have video or witnesses in that situation if people back your story its a bit different

I don't want to speak for Firas but if I understand how he thinks correctly, he would probably say it depends on the situation. If you're sat down and someone initiates an attack, like it happened to Ryan Hall in a restaurant (video available on YT), your judo is unusable. It depends on the situation, like everything.
@Beaujangles McJiggle Judo has good groundwork. But it's limited. You have 10 seconds to get something and then another 10-20 to work it. So in judo, most of the time when someone gets into a good defensive position it's just not worth the effort. But when ground work is attempted, it means the attacker has to explosively get into it and get something fast, which is good in a self defence situation where you don't want to be on the ground too long. As far as self defense application goes, Judo ground game is practical and realistic. In judo, the purpose of the ground game is for when the throw doesn't work and then it's a back up, and a defense if you end up on the ground with them. the ippon (winning throw) is supposed to mimic a throw which, if it didn't happen on the matt, would severly incapacitate the other person.
@Trail Blazer Yes Wrestling is the most effiecient way to get someone to the ground. Judo isn't about that, it's about getting them to the ground hard.
Freestyle wrestling and BJJ with BJJ on top. Judo doesn't allow for shots and requires the person to have a jacket and loose pants. But Judo is a definite third and by no means is slouch of a sport. I've learned to appreciate watching it though it's pretty dope
In Scotland if a drunk guys ask you to look at his phone you look at his phone and have a bit of banter. You lot need to chill out and trust in your fellow man.
Miranda rights are present for "individuals" not "citizens". So to your point - in the US every individual has the rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
Firas, you absolutely do have all the same rights under our constitution that any citizen in our country would. Any person on US territory has Miranda rights, the right to an attorney, etc. regardless of citizenship. However, you could be barred from coming back in the future depending on the circumstances like you said.
If somebody keeps following me I will just start recording it, if it continues and I have the feeling that it won’t stop any time soon, I will set up the camera and just defend myself
I’m including myself in this group. But anyone who says they “avoid street fights at all cost,” is secretly itching for a fight to erupt. People who ACTUALLY avoid street fights at all cost will not mention the word “fight” to describe anything in their day to day life.
It's a little funny you can tell Firas has no experience with drugs as he was only able to assume drunk or stoned, but people nowadays are on so many different types of pills who knows what kinda stuff that guy was on, but probably not weed though
I understand what you are saying about tactics. My problem though is that you thought your opponent was choked out and you just left him there. Ever notice that some people who are choked out die from it? In my opinion you needed to keep watching and perhaps resuscitate your opponent.
@@kevintse2870 Usually true but sometimes not. Remember Eric Gardner? Kodokan teaches resuscitation--not mouth to mouth. It works and I've used it in real life. Guys like you and police should know it in my opinion.
So I didn't understand exactly what you were saying about when you should and shouldn't choke someone out in a street fight. You said only use it in a life-or-death situation, yet you used it against a guy when you were outnumbering him?
Kalernor have you not ever heard of disclaimers? People have to say don’t do retarded shit because people do retarded shit and blame people who have nothing to do with said shit...
That's how people get got by stickup kids. They either ask you for the time, or try to show you something to distract you, and half a sec later, your freedom and everything you own is now essentially theirs.
Growing up in South Florida I wish I knew to walk away but I also never back down, I also have no formal skills...just street fights etc it's amazing how as much as I avoid situations, they come to me...but when I impose my will visually first...%99 nothing happens because people seeing I'm not an easy target. My instinct is to protect etc I really wish I knew the skills a trained fighter processes. I would have more discipline etc. When most people see I'm not what I look on the outside and they look in my eyes, nothing happens...only once I was backed by my neighbor on our front balcony n he threatened to throw me off and i swear my instinct and God took over with two hooks and two uppercuts and I didn't hit em after hit he the ground. I've been jumped a few times but nothing but punching to the back of my head. 6-1....I got up and asked for 1-1 and got the same treatment. Our world has changed so much as far as respect for elders, others, and each other. When I go out I know it's a jungle out there. I just know basic boxing and it's got me far enough but it's a wild world man. Appreciate the advice and everything you advise in these situations.
If you're carrying, draw your weapon and proceed to retreat. If the guy follows you then you fire, and lay him down. Brute force rules apply....I'm not fighting a guy in the street, he may be a better fighter than me. If he gets the upper hand he may have the chance to kill me with his bare hands or with my own weapon. Therefore, avoid conflict and be prepared to shoot. Keep a good lawyer on standby.
I have heard from my coaches in the past that Matt Serra is a super nice guy and just fun to be around. Why is it always some drunk fool pushing their luck?!
@I'm Mikey Problem with MT not just little emphasis on boxing but the real problem is their zero head movement so they don't get head kicked or kneed in MT fights. Plus that discipline don't believe in i'll hit you and you won't hit me. Still a great martial art though.
Depends, what's closest to you? If u can either go to a boxing gym or an MMA gym with a great boxing coach. MT in it's traditional form is not very good for MMA. And Sanda from a high level team/coach is hard to find. (At least for me it was.)
Sanda: biggest scores are from takedown and pushing opponent out of arena. If you're a ground fighter, it complements your style well. If you like to win by decision, it gives you more cage control Muay thai: takedown is allowed but doesn't count as score. If you achieved gold medal in all grappling sports, and want to focus on your striking, it's your best deal
Guests have all the rights as anyone else except to keep and bear arms, but of course it would be best to avoid getting into any type of confrontation with a drunk in a foreign country.
Mais firas si tu avais mis le premier coup,tu serais pas en legitime defense si ? je sais pas comment ca se passe au canada je suis Français mais mettre le premier coup est compliqué chez nous
I actually disagree with chokes only being used in life or death. Carotid restraints do not kill people if used correctly. That's why they're legal in every division in BJJ, judo, other grappling.
eamonob84 yes, but they all also have a referee here in the matches. And in gyms you’ve obviously got the coaches and other students who will stop you from holding a choke too long
Could you imagine the disappointment of successfully picking a fight with Firas... That's like crawling inside the dragons mouth and flicking its tongue.
Thanks for a great video, very interesting and helpful! I have 4 years of BJJ experience (blue belt) and was in a similar situation just last friday night. That really made me wonder how to deal with people like that and how to act. Do you act as their friend or do you walk away with potential risk of comming across as rude/disrespectful? Story: I was standing on a square in a new city by my bike looking down in my phone for directions and a guy in a hoodie, noticable affected by something, went directly towards me which made me back up and ask him " hey how are you doing?". So he stands by my bike and I stand on the other side a bit away from it and he grabs it and goes" is this your bike?" -yeah, I just paused here since Im looking for directions, do you know where *the place* is? He said "sure I will show you come with me" And i said " noo it's okay you can just point/ give me directions!" And he replies "do you hate me?" When I said no and that he seemed nice (he really didnt) he said come here I want to talk with you" and he made a handgesture that he wanted me to come closer to him. At that moment I didnt have the guts to say "we can talk perfectely fine from here" so I just said "why?" And he got a little bit more aggresive in his tone and still wanted me to come closer. I thought "what the heck" and went closer. We both now stand close to eachother on the opposite sides of my bike and he goes "I'm the king of Kumla" (a little place in sweden where criminals that have commited really severe crimes gets enprisoned). If he would have had a knife or something he could have totally stolen my bike or hurt me but I ended up walking and talking with him unwillingly for about 10 unstable minutes until I found a moment to jump on my bike and bicycle away from him fast as hell. Reflection: So it worked out for me acting as the nice friendly guy. If I had tried in the beginning to say something like "look you seem like a nice guy but Im in a hurry" that could have worked but I was afraid he would take it as disrespect. I still regret going nearer to him when he asked me though. A potential knife stab is way worse than a stolen bike. I think I will follow your tips in the future, be friendly and walk away and dont invite to friendship by beeing to friendly. Also I learned that it is really stupid to give out information about yourself such as being new in the city and telling him where you are heading. It was really hard to come up with excuses after that and I am lucky he did not had thorougly planned bad intentions. Conclusion(?): So the moral after this experience and this video I will go with from now on in these situations is to be polite but not friendly, dont let anyone control me verbally into potentially physically dangerous situations and I will put my own worth higher than things I own. Does this seems legit? How would you (readers) react in similar situations? Any tips/own experiences?
Not one story was finished in this video like WTF dude, concentrate....what happened with first story about the guy who stood up after being choked up, what happened with the Matt Serra video...
Dagan Vickers Maybe, maybe not. Neither you nor I were faced by a persistent guy trying to force a conversation (or confrontation) on us when we'd made it clear we weren't interested in the interaction that day.
@verifyyouare18or depending the situation yes but you put yourself at risk by letting him even engage.. By taking control from the beginning you increase your chances of winning
The best and safest way to not get injured in a street fight is to be smart enough and aware enough to never get in one. You could be the best fighter in the world but a guy with a knife or 2 or 3 guys jumping on you and you are a goner

Mason Sandner thanks for the info I didn’t know that!
If somebody keeps following me I will just start recording it, if it continues and I have the feeling that it won’t stop any time soon, I will set up the camera and just defend myself
Is standard half guard a better option for that situation? Maybe to get to an undertook and dog fight position or a half guard sweep possibly?
I’m including myself in this group. But anyone who says they “avoid street fights at all cost,” is secretly itching for a fight to erupt. People who ACTUALLY avoid street fights at all cost will not mention the word “fight” to describe anything in their day to day life.
if your an elite striker and you can take out an opponent very fast why grapple?
I'm very well stoned man you can't say he was stoned cmon now
It's a little funny you can tell Firas has no experience with drugs as he was only able to assume drunk or stoned, but people nowadays are on so many different types of pills who knows what kinda stuff that guy was on, but probably not weed though
Ikr he was drunk, cmon
Shut up were you the guy in the story? Who cares if you smoke weed.
I know plenty of dumb morons who smoke blunts and smell like shit and start fights. Nothing new
dont get so defensive. the point was he was on something. a combination of booze and marijuana you can for sure act like an aggressive fuck wit.
I understand what you are saying about tactics. My problem though is that you thought your opponent was choked out and you just left him there. Ever notice that some people who are choked out die from it? In my opinion you needed to keep watching and perhaps resuscitate your opponent.
James Dotson no they typically come back fine
@@kevintse2870 Usually true but sometimes not. Remember Eric Gardner? Kodokan teaches resuscitation--not mouth to mouth. It works and I've used it in real life. Guys like you and police should know it in my opinion.
These fighters always who tell you not to get into fights unless unavoidable somehow always get into "unavoidable" fights.
I got attacked by a drunk dude,I kept my distance with a kick, and run away.glad i survived or didn't got beat up cause I wasn't speaking German.
"Hey man, check out my phone".. Nah, sorry. I think I'm gonna crack you with a right hand.. lol wtf. 😂
116-0 in the streets
Chalie Z
So I didn't understand exactly what you were saying about when you should and shouldn't choke someone out in a street fight. You said only use it in a life-or-death situation, yet you used it against a guy when you were outnumbering him?
Kalernor have you not ever heard of disclaimers? People have to say don’t do retarded shit because people do retarded shit and blame people who have nothing to do with said shit...
Kalernor because he is doing self reflection and realized that he shouldn’t have done it. It’s called learning and doing better.
It's called cross faded coach
Ok…
where is the website where you can buy all type of leagal self deffence wepond
If you're carrying, draw your weapon and proceed to retreat. If the guy follows you then you fire, and lay him down. Brute force rules apply....I'm not fighting a guy in the street, he may be a better fighter than me. If he gets the upper hand he may have the chance to kill me with his bare hands or with my own weapon. Therefore, avoid conflict and be prepared to shoot. Keep a good lawyer on standby.
all he ask was for him to look at his phone lmao. you are a joke
I think the story could be a bit shorter.
but jiu jitsu professor says canada has no self defense rules lmao
I hate drunk people but it’s usually easy to go unnoticed with them if you don’t interact with them at all
Does Firas have a podcast ?
I have heard from my coaches in the past that Matt Serra is a super nice guy and just fun to be around. Why is it always some drunk fool pushing their luck?!
Change the description
Sanda vs Muay thai.. whats better for mma?
@I'm Mikey Problem with MT not just little emphasis on boxing but the real problem is their zero head movement so they don't get head kicked or kneed in MT fights. Plus that discipline don't believe in i'll hit you and you won't hit me. Still a great martial art though.
Depends, what's closest to you? If u can either go to a boxing gym or an MMA gym with a great boxing coach. MT in it's traditional form is not very good for MMA. And Sanda from a high level team/coach is hard to find. (At least for me it was.)
@I'm Mikey there's 'dutch' kickboxing, there's 'american' kickboxing. If you don't like muay thai, you're into the 'american' one...
Sanda: biggest scores are from takedown and pushing opponent out of arena. If you're a ground fighter, it complements your style well. If you like to win by decision, it gives you more cage control
Muay thai: takedown is allowed but doesn't count as score. If you achieved gold medal in all grappling sports, and want to focus on your striking, it's your best deal
@@treroney4720 muay thai is the most accessible in america, sanda in eastern europe and asia
Guests have all the rights as anyone else except to keep and bear arms, but of course it would be best to avoid getting into any type of confrontation with a drunk in a foreign country.
If you are in the country legally, you have the same rights. Miranda included.
And in gyms you’ve obviously got the coaches and other students who will stop you from holding a choke too long
eamonob84 if you hold it for to long, you can kill them
Please first do and episode of you dealing with multiple attackers
Chee Leong 1. Situational awareness
2. Boxing with knockout power
With all due respect, why didn’t you just look at the phone?
I'd not look at someone s phone if they are so insistent
Don't demand what you can't take by force
I think maybe he recognised you and the picture on his phone was you
I disagree, avoid conflict but if it finds you make them unconscious.
Could you imagine the disappointment of successfully picking a fight with Firas... That's like crawling inside the dragons mouth and flicking its tongue.
May be that guy was a fan or something. He recognized that he was from ufc. Selfie.
This story sounds like he had a photo with maybe you and GSP on his phone with him and he wanted to prove you're a fighter
Great 👍🏼 stories - non-citizens have Miranda rights in the US - I would have just peeked at his phone 😂. But watch for the attack at the same time.
Lol this video is hilarious on so many levels
Thanks for a great video, very interesting and helpful! I have 4 years of BJJ experience (blue belt) and was in a similar situation just last friday night. That really made me wonder how to deal with people like that and how to act. Do you act as their friend or do you walk away with potential risk of comming across as rude/disrespectful?
Story:
I was standing on a square in a new city by my bike looking down in my phone for directions and a guy in a hoodie, noticable affected by something, went directly towards me which made me back up and ask him " hey how are you doing?".
Reflection:
So it worked out for me acting as the nice friendly guy.
Conclusion(?):
So the moral after this experience and this video I will go with from now on in these situations is to be polite but not friendly, dont let anyone control me verbally into potentially physically dangerous situations and I will put my own worth higher than things I own. Does this seems legit? How would you (readers) react in similar situations? Any tips/own experiences?

Not one story was finished in this video like WTF dude, concentrate....what happened with first story about the guy who stood up after being choked up, what happened with the Matt Serra video...
You do sound like a trouble maker. I could not even imagine getting into so many streetfights in one lifetime (unwillingly)
Mutsu try looking like him and you’ll no
You must live somewhere nice

Gracie Jiu Jitsu for life 🥋
But yeah why strike and burn energy when a few simple grappling moves you will be ina dominate position and be in complete control
Dude I think the guy just wanted to show a picture of you he saw on the internet or maybe an MMA fighter who looked like you who he thought was you I don't think he had bad intentions
Hey coach I want to show you something on my phone!
I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure anyone from everywhere gets Mirandized
