I have..... i replied: 21.6.24 1741pm the back meadow my childhood homer looked out on to turned out to be one massive ant hill....i set up a tent a few years ago as a middle aged personage...and found, after a few nips and irritable nights, they (said ants) seem to get used to you after a while, maybe taking you for one of their own, after they have scented you in whatever ants spit out of their posteriors to ward off irritable intruders.... the ground crunched with flying ant dead who, it is alleged, turn out in millions to mate on the wing and then die..... such is life, uh? my home was infested with them and i took to showing them the door ie: putting them out the back after finding them in used tea pots likcing up the excess sugar dregs...and they eventually seemed to get the drift... maybe they find dead ends not worth indulging with? i don't know...a very interesting creature but not a comfortable bed fellow. i found putting conkers on th ewindow sill a seeming deterrent to spiders. and th eflies seem quite happy to be out doors, not in my home.... in short the cats and dogs crappingh all over is far more of a worry as are their psycho owners. go figure..

I've known ants were amazing for a long time. When I was ten years old (sixty years ago!) I read a children's book called The City Under The Back Steps. It included much of the wonderful, amazing information that this video addresses. I was captivated then as I am now watching this video. I love learning that stretches the mind to places previously undreamed of. Thank you so much, I loved the video.
The Largest Civilization in The World 0709am 10.6.23 i know... there's on old field where i used to live, as a child, and if you turned over a stone (obviously put the stone back after seeking them out) you could see masses of ants scurrying about with their eggs - akin to little grains of rice. in fact i found upon camping there 35 years later that the filed is now one vast ant's nest... and it's pretty much amazing to think how far their colonies stretch...

This is so wholesome, you should get a pet ant colony!! I have 3 different colonies (Carpenter ants, Red harvester ants, and banded sugar ants), I totally recommend it, it's so fascinating to watch them.

Just one addition, the fungi not only infects ants, it does the same thing to any insect upon which its spores settles. The fungi always forces or drives its victim upward upon branches, so that the next generation of spores can rain down upon unsuspected insects below. As Spock would say, "fascinating"!
I'm beginning this video now & not sure if this relates but I seen a video years ago of an iphone ringing on the ground & before it rang ants just aimlessly wandering it seemed then they literally went circles around phone once it was ringing. Anybody?

Cool video! My best friend in university who was (and is) a gifted scientist, once told me that the most efficient organism on the planet is the humble ant. They can survive in almost every climate, catastrophe, and circumstance. That always stuck with me.

I wouldn't say that it rivals our own. Ans are similar to us in many ways, but also different in the same or more ways than we are similar. For example, we have archived a lot more than they ever could, with a much shorter time of experience than they have.

Some kinds of ants are horrid pests.They invade your house and make their nests in cracks and crevices ,in cupboards in couches even invade food in packages and some are so small you can barely see them with the naked eye. Leaf cutters can do much destruction to certain food crops..
I lived in a 96 year old fishing cabin for a couple of years and every time I cooked chicken some of the grease would get on my counter top. Tiny ants would circle each spot and over a few days the spot, even though I had wiped it up with a dry cloth, would shrink as the ants ate the spot away. One week I had a small piece of cardboard laying next to their trail and I picked it up to toss in the trash but underneath were a couple dozen ants just taking a break. I replaced the card board and checked it every day and every day there were dozens of ants under it. Made me think that some ants aren't as social-minded as the rest of their tribe. Some ants are lazy, taking advantage of hiding from the work.
Four species of ants live in and around our house here in Cagayan de Oro Mindanao Philippines. I'm always watching their behavior. One species, known in the local Cebuano language as "aliwarang", are small black ants that seem to be equipped with a turbocharger. They are super fast. Another species, "pila" are so small that it's difficult to tell how many there are. In Cebuano "pila" means "how many". Another small black ant species is called "sulom". If there is any source of food on the floor of our house here they are very soon all over it. The fourth species fortunately is outside. These are the fire ants, known in Cebuano as "lamigas". Aggressive, armed with both a sting and a bite.

@@plopdoo339 Thank you! The three species that often come inside our house don't seem to fight with each other. The fire ants, however, are very aggressive, and will attack other ants, including fire ants from "enemy" colonies. Fortunately it's rare for them to enter the house. From what I can see, the three species that do enter our house have colonies that are very close to the house itself. They will come in if they detect food after sending out scouts, or if the weather is rainy, for example, a heavy thunderstorm. They will often be a good indicator of coming heavy rain.
In my previous house here in Japan, we also had four species of ant in the garden (and sometimes in the house), ranging from almost microscopic orange-coloured ants to a species so big I used to call them the Clockwork Ants! No fire ants, fortunately, but that may be only a matter of time.
The Citris ants (Wisconsin) I read many years ago they climb the trees to kidnapp aphids, then bring them underground, farm them as we farm cows. The ants milk them which feed the larva.
I like going to work and telling my work mates random facts about outer space and animals from all of the documentaries I've seen on youtube. And they're like damn how do you know all this. And I just point to my head and tap it. Feels good man

During the Vietnam war, Prisoners of the North Vietnamese, who spent months in solitary confinement, entertained themselves by ant experimentation. A crumb of precious food would be placed, and they noted scout ants discovering the food, laying a pheromone trail, doing their thing. Then they'd block or move the trail and see the resultant behavior. I can see this help their stressed minds deal with the isolation. I was told this by an ex POW.
Being held in a jail dorm there was a crack in the floor being isolated from the outside world the fights inside the dorm lack of food ect.still we rallied together to feed and protect our family of ants. I remember years ago whilst working in Iraq that if any food or sugar was spilled and not cleaned up immediately the surface spilled on would be totally covered with ants far too many to be to be counted. Imagine then how hard if not impossible estimating their numbers over the whole planet would be.
As a kid I used love seeing the black ants fight the red ants. It was like a small war going on. They would even pile the dead. I would always imagine the red ones being Chinese or Russian..🤣🤭
Always admired ants. I hated messing up their carefully constructed colonies when I had to mow the lawn. When I was a kid I remember spotting this large black ant and when my fingertip got up close it grabbed hold and gave me a nice, painful pinch. Lesson learned.
I just love these creatures and the land around my house is totally full of them. They are so so smart. I try not to kill them because they get so old . I feel they are extra important but I'm not sure why

Does anyone know what ants become when their anthill is destroyed? I made usual firewood these times, and found many "anthills" in dead pine trees. Once cut in logs, the ants run everywhere around apparently disorientated, but maybe they are simply busy at applying an appropriate "plan" for such a circumstance?
i think they would continue their program after calming down, because they will if thrown into ant farm, jar of sand.. they start to build a new complex, even when their severed from their colony. they will continue to do their assignments without a queen until they die. mixed species will build together in a jar after they fight.. so i assume the scattered ants outside a jar will rebuild, and they can produce a new queen but it takes time for her to be able to mature, so a hive with a destroyed queen is in a weakened state but it can recover. a hive with just physical damage and the queen survives is not destroyed and will recover, they can and do relocate usually nearby after traumatic events (gasoline and fire)

I’m no scientist, but from what I know, the ants can reorganize and find a different place to nest (if there is one close enough so they can reach it before exhaustion). This reorganization doesn’t happen inmediately, at first all ants will run away aimlessly, but once they feel far enough from danger, they’ll start regrouping.
Most bugs bug me, but I somehow like ants. Several years ago, I had found a polystyrene model kit from the French manufacturer Heller of a black (carpenter?) ant about 10 cm (4") long; I estimate it to be in 10:1 scale. I had assembled several, using an arrangement of rubber bands and an internal armature to cause the an- tennae, forelegs and mandibles to move slightly if I drew upon a monofilament line. I set them near my front door as a deterrent to intruders (my residence was near to a problematic neighbourhood)? ....

Always wondered whether there is a way to turn off the switch of "collectivism" and turn on (or enhance) the "individualism" in a given ant's brain, say, by epigenetics or the use of some type of drug. I assume studying the mechanism those fungi mentioned in the video use to control the ant's mind can lead to a better understanding on how this could be achieved (if achievable), although from the sound of it, it seems to be like the insect's version of mammal rabies.

I once recorded an ant colony struggle carrying a grasshopper carcass over some sand (they kept slipping on it) so they brought over a sunflower kernel shell and proceeded to nuzzle the shell under the food to make it easier to walk on and move it further up the hill, ANTS ARE AWESOME
Darwin admitted that he was confounded by ants. The strong in the colony protect the weak and their function is not just 'determined by size' as each ant is equipped with specialisations making them collectively a Swiss army knife toolkit.
I've always been fascinated by ants since my childhood, marvelling at their social organisation and drawings similarities with human civilization...I even had a brilliant illustrative publication on these marvelous creatures whose endeavors even include agriculture, animal husbandry and yes Slave grooming (Slave driver ants) and military conquests and subjugation.. The Texas Leaf Cutter Ant was imported straight out of hell! I wish I could send them back. In my neighborhood we have estimated a colony that is about 1/2 miles square and according to Texas A&M, their beds are well over 20 feet deep. In one night they stripped every leaf off of over 25 fruit trees, multiple crepe myrtles and every flowering plant we had. One night! And that was just my yard, they hit every neighbor on my street that same night. There is no currently known method for controlling their population. The only thing known to work is to wrap every tree with a super sticky substance and replace it every few months. If only the whole colony would mark in a death circle - we would all rejoice.
I'm from San Antonio Texas and a foreign ant was introduced to get rid of the fire ants. Now they took over. They don't make mounds but they got inside your house, in your bed, all over. They sting but not as bad as fire ants. If they get into your car through a branch, they will eat or chew your wires. Talk about evasive species.... I left Texas to cooler climate..lol.
if you think about it, ants are perfect organisms, they don't take breaks, they don't complain, they are the most organized species that even rivals humans

I have..... i replied: 21.6.24 1741pm the back meadow my childhood homer looked out on to turned out to be one massive ant hill....i set up a tent a few years ago as a middle aged personage...and found, after a few nips and irritable nights, they (said ants) seem to get used to you after a while, maybe taking you for one of their own, after they have scented you in whatever ants spit out of their posteriors to ward off irritable intruders.... the ground crunched with flying ant dead who, it is alleged, turn out in millions to mate on the wing and then die..... such is life, uh? my home was infested with them and i took to showing them the door ie: putting them out the back after finding them in used tea pots likcing up the excess sugar dregs...and they eventually seemed to get the drift... maybe they find dead ends not worth indulging with? i don't know...a very interesting creature but not a comfortable bed fellow. i found putting conkers on th ewindow sill a seeming deterrent to spiders. and th eflies seem quite happy to be out doors, not in my home.... in short the cats and dogs crappingh all over is far more of a worry as are their psycho owners. go figure..

I've known ants were amazing for a long time. When I was ten years old (sixty years ago!) I read a children's book called The City Under The Back Steps. It included much of the wonderful, amazing information that this video addresses. I was captivated then as I am now watching this video. I love learning that stretches the mind to places previously undreamed of. Thank you so much, I loved the video.

This is so wholesome, you should get a pet ant colony!! I have 3 different colonies (Carpenter ants, Red harvester ants, and banded sugar ants), I totally recommend it, it's so fascinating to watch them.

Just one addition, the fungi not only infects ants, it does the same thing to any insect upon which its spores settles. The fungi always forces or drives its victim upward upon branches, so that the next generation of spores can rain down upon unsuspected insects below. As Spock would say, "fascinating"!

Cool video! My best friend in university who was (and is) a gifted scientist, once told me that the most efficient organism on the planet is the humble ant. They can survive in almost every climate, catastrophe, and circumstance. That always stuck with me.

I wouldn't say that it rivals our own. Ans are similar to us in many ways, but also different in the same or more ways than we are similar.
For example, we have archived a lot more than they ever could, with a much shorter time of experience than they have.

Some kinds of ants are horrid pests.They invade your house and make their nests in cracks and crevices ,in cupboards in couches even invade food in packages and some are so small you can barely see them with the naked eye. Leaf cutters can do much destruction to certain food crops..

I lived in a 96 year old fishing cabin for a couple of years and every time I cooked chicken some of the grease would get on my counter top. Tiny ants would circle each spot and over a few days the spot, even though I had wiped it up with a dry cloth, would shrink as the ants ate the spot away. One week I had a small piece of cardboard laying next to their trail and I picked it up to toss in the trash but underneath were a couple dozen ants just taking a break. I replaced the card board and checked it every day and every day there were dozens of ants under it. Made me think that some ants aren't as social-minded as the rest of their tribe. Some ants are lazy, taking advantage of hiding from the work.

Four species of ants live in and around our house here in Cagayan de Oro Mindanao Philippines. I'm always watching their behavior. One species, known in the local Cebuano language as "aliwarang", are small black ants that seem to be equipped with a turbocharger. They are super fast. Another species, "pila" are so small that it's difficult to tell how many there are. In Cebuano "pila" means "how many". Another small black ant species is called "sulom". If there is any source of food on the floor of our house here they are very soon all over it. The fourth species fortunately is outside. These are the fire ants, known in Cebuano as "lamigas". Aggressive, armed with both a sting and a bite.

@@plopdoo339 Thank you! The three species that often come inside our house don't seem to fight with each other. The fire ants, however, are very aggressive, and will attack other ants, including fire ants from "enemy" colonies. Fortunately it's rare for them to enter the house. From what I can see, the three species that do enter our house have colonies that are very close to the house itself. They will come in if they detect food after sending out scouts, or if the weather is rainy, for example, a heavy thunderstorm. They will often be a good indicator of coming heavy rain.
In my previous house here in Japan, we also had four species of ant in the garden (and sometimes in the house), ranging from almost microscopic orange-coloured ants to a species so big I used to call them the Clockwork Ants! No fire ants, fortunately, but that may be only a matter of time.

The Citris ants (Wisconsin) I read many years ago they climb the trees to kidnapp aphids, then bring them underground, farm them as we farm cows. The ants milk them which feed the larva.

I remember years ago whilst working in Iraq that if any food or sugar was spilled and not cleaned up immediately the surface spilled on would be totally covered with ants far too many to be to be counted. Always admired ants. I hated messing up their carefully constructed colonies when I had to mow the lawn. When I was a kid I remember spotting this large black ant and when my fingertip got up close it grabbed hold and gave me a nice, painful pinch. Lesson learned.
I just love these creatures and the land around my house is totally full of them. They are so so smart. I try not to kill them because they get so old . I feel they are extra important but I'm not sure why

I made usual firewood these times, and found many "anthills" in dead pine trees. Once cut in logs, the ants run everywhere around apparently disorientated, but maybe they are simply busy at applying an appropriate "plan" for such a circumstance?
i think they would continue their program after calming down, because they will if thrown into ant farm, jar of sand.. they start to build a new complex, even when their severed from their colony. they will continue to do their assignments without a queen until they die. mixed species will build together in a jar after they fight.. so i assume the scattered ants outside a jar will rebuild, and they can produce a new queen but it takes time for her to be able to mature, so a hive with a destroyed queen is in a weakened state but it can recover. a hive with just physical damage and the queen survives is not destroyed and will recover, they can and do relocate usually nearby after traumatic events (gasoline and fire)

I’m no scientist, but from what I know, the ants can reorganize and find a different place to nest (if there is one close enough so they can reach it before exhaustion). This reorganization doesn’t happen inmediately, at first all ants will run away aimlessly, but once they feel far enough from danger, they’ll start regrouping.

Most bugs bug me, but I somehow like ants. Several years ago, I had found a polystyrene model kit from the French manufacturer Heller of a black (carpenter?) ant about 10 cm (4") long; I estimate it to be in 10:1 scale. I had assembled several, using an arrangement of rubber bands and an internal armature to cause the an- tennae, forelegs and mandibles to move slightly if I drew upon a monofilament line. I set them near my front door as a deterrent to intruders (my residence was near to a problematic neighbourhood)?

Ants are among the most amazing of life on earth.
Always wondered whether there is a way to turn off the switch of "collectivism" and turn on (or enhance) the "individualism" in a given ant's brain, say, by epigenetics or the use of some type of drug. I assume studying the mechanism those fungi mentioned in the video use to control the ant's mind can lead to a better understanding on how this could be achieved (if achievable), although from the sound of it, it seems to be like the insect's version of mammal rabies.
Fascinating question! I have loved ants all my life (I'm 55) and never thought of it. Now I will wonder for years to come. I hope we get an answer some day.

I once recorded an ant colony struggle carrying a grasshopper carcass over some sand (they kept slipping on it) so they brought over a sunflower kernel shell and proceeded to nuzzle the shell under the food to make it easier to walk on and move it further up the hill, ANTS ARE AWESOME

Darwin admitted that he was confounded by ants. The strong in the colony protect the weak and their function is not just 'determined by size' as each ant is equipped with specialisations making them collectively a Swiss army knife toolkit.

I've always been fascinated by ants since my childhood, marvelling at their social organisation and drawings similarities with human civilization...I even had a brilliant illustrative publication on these marvelous creatures whose endeavors even include agriculture, animal husbandry and yes Slave grooming (Slave driver ants) and military conquests and subjugation.. WOW 😳!!!!
Yes Slave Driving Ants/ Amazon Ants and South American Army Ants and African Driver Ants. I use to draw alot of pictures of red & black ants fighting as a kid. Had a Uncle Milton Ant Farm.

The Texas Leaf Cutter Ant was imported straight out of hell! I wish I could send them back. In my neighborhood we have estimated a colony that is about 1/2 miles square and according to Texas A&M, their beds are well over 20 feet deep. In one night they stripped every leaf off of over 25 fruit trees, multiple crepe myrtles and every flowering plant we had. One night! And that was just my yard, they hit every neighbor on my street that same night. There is no currently known method for controlling their population. The only thing known to work is to wrap every tree with a super sticky substance and replace it every few months. If only the whole colony would mark in a death circle - we would all rejoice.

I'm from San Antonio Texas and a foreign ant was introduced to get rid of the fire ants. Now they took over. They don't make mounds but they got inside your house, in your bed, all over. They sting but not as bad as fire ants. If they get into your car through a branch, they will eat or chew your wires. Talk about evasive species.... I left Texas to cooler climate..lol.
if you think about it, ants are perfect organisms, they don't take breaks, they don't complain, they are the most organized species that even rivals humans
