After being much requested, I’m excited at last to release the feature-length, uncut ‘Deep Sea Midwater’ film, combining my Twilight Zone and Midnight Zone films into one continuous, immersive, relaxing adventure beginning at the ocean surface and descending right down to 4,000 metres! Through the twilit gloom we encounter silver cutlassfish shimmering in our headlights, and deeper down, snake-like gulper eels, anglers, and starving mother squid tending to their young in a world without any solid shelter! This combined film marks 2 years of work and is how I originally intended to release these projects, but I had to initially split them up as they were taking much more time (and turning out far more in-depth) than expected. So, here is ‘Wonders of the Deep Sea Void’ as it was always meant to be, filmed by the brilliant Schmidt Ocean Institute! To bring everything up to quality, I’ve completely re-recorded the voice-over for the Twilight Zone with a newer far superior microphone, introduced some new music, and some brand new footage. I really hope you enjoy, even if you’ve seen both episodes before! It’s a long one (and I know many of you like to sleep to my films), so settle down, perhaps tuck yourself in, relax, and prepare to descend into the deep ocean! Episode 3 in the ‘Worlds of the Deep’ series, The Deep Sea Floor, is still in production, along with another science-oriented film about the unexplored Deep Sea off the coast of Chile, where unseen geology has crafted an unusual set of hollows supporting life thriving in near-total isolation - featuring brand new species and 4K unreleased deep sea footage filmed just this year!!
Thank you, I know this is a labour of love for you but it is an absolutely amazing, beautifully done film that teaches us so much and visually made me cry. I’ve been watching you from the beginning and I am very grateful. I can easily imagine the amazing creatures that may live on Enceladus or Europa..
I couldn't sleep so I opened youtube and saw a new video from you and it really brings me joy, although I have watched both episodes multiple times. I absolutely love your work and will continue to follow and wait for more episodes. Thank you for being you and doing what you do :)

That makes me very happy! You’d be surprised how many comments I’ve had asking if this footage is real! The recent blow that prompted me to add the disclaimer was when an Instagram page started cloning my voice identically and creating videos where ‘I’ would narrate over generated videos of grotesque, monstrous sci-fi ‘deep sea aliens’, and yet many commenters on that page thought (1) the voice was actually me, and (2) thought the footage was of real organisms!! With the media landscape changing so quickly towards one where AI is everywhere and we can’t always believe what we see, I wanted to add that level of authenticity from the start to hit home just home unbelievably beautiful the *real* wonders in our oceans are, without any need for embellishment, let alone fake copies! I can’t stand AI being used in science communication! I’m glad you noticed and appreciated the statement :)
I fully agree with the AI sentiment, it may just rob the world wide web of it's real life magic I am afraid. Artificial works (in my opinion), especially low effort rip offs, may hit the algorythm just right on IG - but I doubt a copy of an original can ever be better than what it tries to wrongly profit off of. Must be such a weird thing to have to be cautious about as a creator though - especially if viewers tend to be unable to recognise that it's not content you would put out, even if the sound of your voice might seem identical.

throughout the entire program i thought to myself "he sounds so young" and then you cane on screen and you look like a teenager. i have no idea how you have become so good at this at such a young age but as a fellow science communicator (long form text, mostly in hebrew) let me tell you that this is some of the finest I've ever come across. Your soft-spoken voice is great too, but mostly, your writing is absolutely wonderful and the storytelling is sublime (very reminscent of prof. Ketering of "@cool worlds lab", which is high praise, as he is my favorite. you both also talk almost exactly the same way). The way you've built the story itself is perfect. The editing, also, is top-notch. How old are you, if i may ask? You have a huge future in this and i have no doubt you will be doing big tbings. Thank you so much for all the hard work. This is my very humble contribution to the effort.
Your message and donation are both unbelievably kind, thank you, truly! I’m 22 years old (as of October), and I started this channel when I was 9 as a hobby, at the time with the help my techy brother (those early videos are still live). So a love of nature, but particularly the art of communicating science through film, has always felt like a very deep and ingrained passion for me. I don’t think I could ever lose that love, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. So to hear feedback like yours is just so wonderful! Thank you!! How did you first get into science communication yourself?
@@NaturalWorldFacts very cool! about myself, I have always been someone who gets extremely excited with new information. and when I get really excited I want to tell other people about it. my superpower has always been if I can understand it I can explain it. I used to do it simply for my friends on my Facebook page until enough people told me that I needed to open my own page. 5 years later I have 20k followers, who read 1500 to 2000 word long long-form essays on a bunch of scientific subjects. in almost-2025 that's saying something. people still want in-depth high quality stuff out there.
Thanks Christian!! I hope you’ve been doing really well! It’s been so long since we caught up 😊 Where are you at in life at the moment? What are you up to?
This is on par with the most renound nature documentaries, with better imagery and picture quality- and honestly I perfer the narration too. Not overdramatic or redundant, no loud distracting music, just a nonstop flow of knowledge and new creatures to behold. Definitely my favourite nature channel! Always a treat when you post a new upload- never stop making these.
Teehee!! 😁😁 I really hope you enjoy - apologies if you’ve seen it before, this is the ‘Directors cut’ version of my Twilight and Midnight zone films, so it’s not completely new (except for re-recording narration, a reworked structure, and some new footage). If you’re planning on sleeping to it, I hope you sleep very well!! 😊
i’ve been watching this channel for around a year now, you have helped me with my anxiety and helped me also learn important facts about creatures we’d never get to see normally, thank you so much :)
Thank you so much as always!! 😁🥰 Yes, this one is the ‘directors cut’ so to speak! Those two videos were always meant to be one continuous midwater film, but I had to split them up as they each became their own enormous undertakings (in other words, I kept getting carried away and adding in new sections, species, research etc). So I figured as a little Christmas bonus, I’d put out the version I originally set out to create, where (I hope) the distinct concepts and behaviours prevalent between the two zones stand out far more. Light defines these habitats, and the difference between ‘almost no light’ and ‘no sunlight at all’ has ENORMOUS implications on survival!! Being side by side, I’m hoping it makes it easier to see how from Twilight to Midnight we go from bright, silvery fish reflecting loads of light to blend in with the ‘low light’, to dark ultra-black fish reflecting almost no light in order to blend in with the ‘pitch black’. Similarly, we go from energetic, active organisms taking advantage of the organic waste near the surface, to slow, lethargic ones, conserving as much energy as possible in wait of their next tiny morsel. It’s these stark comparisons that I find absolutely incredible!!! 😁😁 Got carried away a bit while typing this out haha, sorry!
@@NaturalWorldFacts It is just perfect, Leo.. seeing them side by side heightens the difference between the two zones.. I am thoroughly enjoying this fantastic production.. 🙌 Thank you so much!

So excited. Just snuggling down for the night but who now if I will sleep until I have seen the whole Film! Love your work! I have been impatiently waiting, but it is always worth waiting for!
Thank you so much! 🥰 No need to stay awake for this one if you do drift off as you might have seen most of it before - it’s the full-length combined version of my Twilight and Midnight zone films, the way I originally planned to release them (and as a little Christmas bonus while I work on the next episode). Either way, I hope you’re nice and cosy!! 😊

This was a marvellous, relaxing watch. Absolutely fascinating and incredibly interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and will share this with my friends and family. Thank you for making this 💕😊
Amazing. Simply just amazing, as always. I love documentaries, but many from nowadays do not manage to capture me, mainly because of their narration... Not yours. Honestly, if you told us you have decades of experience narrating, I would believe you. So keep up the awesome work!
I went back to the very beginning of this channel. Whoa! We're the lucky ones. I'm so glad you stuck with it all these years to educate the masses. You are so appreciated. Keep going!
Leo, the technical detail you put into the Chemosynthetic Oases episode made it my most highly regarded documentary of all time. Most mainstream nature documentaries are like "here watch all this footage we captured while we tell you snapple facts about what you're seeing", whereas I have a sense that you're using the footage as examples and illustration to teach me about larger more important concepts. KEEP IT UP.
SO , I GUESS WEVE BEEN LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION FOR ALIEN LIFE FORMS !!! THIS HAS TO BE THE MOST AMAZING VIDEO OF OUR DEEP OCEAN EARTH LIFE IVE EVER SEEN !!! WELL DONE !!! WELL DONE INDEED
Oh Leo, I was unwell for a time and somehow your channel went missing on my threads, (because, you know, UA-cam) yet here finally find you again after months and months and I am delighted, and with a full length feature film no less! I am so glad to again be able to watch your relaxing videos and to once again hear your soothing, elegant voice. And here I am, as always, thunderstruck by your skill as a documentarian. Your visual imagery so exotic and enchanting; your voice is as smooth as honey; I could watch you for days and stay just as engaged as I was in the first five minutes. I am only a few minutes in but I had to write you this little note; you have gotten even more wonderful if such a thing is possible. The images you show us are as rich and vibrant as ever. Here I am, at war with my body because your voice lulls me to the point of dreamy sleep, but the spectacle of your presentation keeps my mind as alert as if I have just awakened from a full night of restful slumber. I'm so happy to have your channel back! Kori, Seattle, WA
Dear Leo - so pleased to chance upon this, thanks to the YT algorithm. It's evident that the writing, narration and composition are all by someone who's passionate and highly knowledgeable about the subject matter. I can't thank you enough for this pleasure. Sensual, seductive voice is merely the cherry on top! Thanks again Leo, truly remarkable and joyous, ~~ Dean.
27:43 I love this shot. The wave in the foreground is dark and desaturated while the incoming wave in the background hits the light for a blue sheen. Then it joins the previous wave and fades into grayscale.
this is what it used to feel like to see a movie i’d been excited for in theaters as a kid! so excited leo thank you! as always you’ve produced an AMAZING film, genuinely my favorite nature documentaries. i actually like your videos more than blue planet, etc bc i love your narration, writing and the style of editing/sound/production, i love that they are “low drama” with gentle music while still being super interesting and engaging. i’m neurodivergent so sometimes i need low-sensory-input media that isnt hitting my ears with cymbals and sound effects! i appreciate details like labeling the animals onscreen, and i feel you go into more detail on the biology/ecology, and provide new info and feature animals i’ve never heard of! i come away with your videos feeling like i gained a deeper understanding of the topic at hand instead of just learning random animal facts. that’s all due to your amazing writing and ability to teach! it’s amazing you do the writing, narrating, editing, sound design etc all yourself, truly professional quality! i hope you’re doing well and uni is going ok! please take care of yourself, you’re doing incredible things! as usual i’m incapable of writing concise comments lol

PS I grew up watching The Trials of Life - a video series with David Attenborough. To the point where my sister and I wore out our VHS copies of the series. Your videos are the equivalent of that to my little daughters.

It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again-The captions for your videos are so well done! Autogenerated captions are ok, but with this kind of topic, it means a lot that you take the time to make sure your videos are accessible to a wide range of audiences. Big props!
Uhh yeah. Totally legitimate "reupload". Cudos for even putting additional work into it by rerecording and adding new music and even some new footage. Mad respect for your work and the love you have for the depths (and the shallows too ofc). Hope you're doing well, mate.
This was absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the quality and perfectly annunciated narrative. It’s astonishing how creatures have adapted to life at this depth.
I watched this, totally absorbed for an hour and had to check the production credits, so surprised that this was, not only not a BBC (or similar) production but also the work of one person! The music, text, narration, and, of course, the images, are the best I have ever seen. I'm now going to rewind and watch it again after this comment. Subscribed.

Talk about an early Christmas present Leo!! This looks beautiful and I know I'm gonna love watching this 😊
Thanks Christian!! I hope you’ve been doing really well! It’s been so long since we caught up 😊 Where are you at in life at the moment? What are you up to?
@NaturalWorldFacts It's going pretty good, I'm just about finishing my MPhil in palaeontology!! What about yourself, how've things been for you?
Another Natural World Facts certified banger
This is on par with the most renound nature documentaries, with better imagery and picture quality- and honestly I perfer the narration too. Not overdramatic or redundant, no loud distracting music, just a nonstop flow of knowledge and new creatures to behold. Definitely my favourite nature channel! Always a treat when you post a new upload- never stop making these.
I was about to go to bed and checked my phone, Ive never clicked a UA-cam notification so fast in my life.
"The only food source is a steady shower of fecal pellets" beautifully said
What can I say? Aiming for Poet Laureate here.
i’ve been watching this channel for around a year now, you have helped me with my anxiety and helped me also learn important facts about creatures we’d never get to see normally, thank you so much :)
My son and I love to watch these together. You do such an outstanding job making these. Kudos on all the hard work and dedication👍
Thanks
I just found this channel. Everything about it is nothing short of amazing. Thank you.
Wow! I look forward to this production.. instant thumbs up for Leo.. 👍💚
Ah, the twilight and midnight zones combined... simply beautiful! 💚👍
@NaturalWorldFacts And I very much appreciate your explanation, which all makes perfect sense.. this is simply a brilliant production.. 👏
It has been an absolute pleasure discovering you channel.
I am currently studying marine science and you have so much during this journey.
Thanks a lot
Yeeees! Ty my good man❤ one of my fav channels.
Thank you 🥰 It’s a compilation film while I work on the next project, but I really hope you enjoy!!!
This is one of my main comfort channels- thank you for being such a quality youtuber!
Thank you so much! This made me very warm - I have a lot of my own comfort channels, so hearing my channel is something similar to you is just amazing!
I absolutely adore this channel it's like you are following in David Attenborough footsteps but still making your own way about it and that is wonderful
OMG the voice of this guy is just sooooo relaxing - better than any meditation I’ve herd
Thank you for your hard work and time. Your writing is wonderful compliment to a perfect narration. Great job man. Well done
I love the narrator's soothing voice. I play this to go to sleep 😴 💤
Best napping videos
I sleep so good to her voice 😂
In NaturalWorldFacts quality productions we trust, no less if it's a compilation of your last two works. Thank you! Can('t) wait to see what you might bless us with next.
Been waiting on this, watched your other vides maybe 25 times each haha. Great work!
It's mind blowing to me that we get feature length documentaries, with beautiful images and top notch narration for free. Thank you
Its cool to see such interesting creatures . with good voice over and easy to understand narration
I’M SO EXCITED!!!
My son loves watching your videos before bed. Thanks for the new content! We've watched all your videos several times over already!
This video is awesome, great narration and soundtrack
This is absolutely INCREDIBLE. Damn near poetic. Also super calming
I really love marine videos like these because I can sleep or learn from them, and it’s just so well put together, good job on this!
you are my favorite documentarian. thank you for all your work. each documentary you produce is a love song to the ocean.
I can't belive what you did, on your own, this is just a documentary deserving a prize, thank you!
So keep up the awesome work!
thank you for everything.
Its like Christmas! Hooray!!! Thanks Leo!
I went back to the very beginning of this channel. Whoa! We're the lucky ones. I'm so glad you stuck with it all these years to educate the masses. You are so appreciated. Keep going!
YAYYYY!!! I get so excited absolutely every single time when I see that you have a new video up! Your content is amazing as always!
I’m always so taken aback by your attention to detail in your films/short films. For this to be free on UA-cam is a gift. You’re truly amazing!
Yes, very true GIRTHOFMYJOHNSON, a very beautiful insight indeed.
Thank you so much for keeping it real, fantastic footage!! thank you again.
Leo's voice is just worldly mesmerizing, universally magical
Your voice is so comforting. I could listen to you all day.
Thank you for your fabulous work! Your work is mezmerizing and you are an excellent teacher on a subject that could easily befuddling most watchers. 😊

Thanks again Leo, truly remarkable and joyous,
~~ Dean.
8:45 gave me “Ghost Leviathan” PTSD from Subnauntica LOL
They based it on Tomopteris!! Look up the Giant Oarfish for a real life Reaper too 😉
BBC documentaries level of quality, as always. Amazing work, my friend!
I'm on a graveyard shift so this is perfect to watch right now
27:43 I love this shot. The wave in the foreground is dark and desaturated while the incoming wave in the background hits the light for a blue sheen. Then it joins the previous wave and fades into grayscale.
This is easily in my top three favorite channels, your films are fantastic
AMAZING AMAZING THANK YOU GUYS!! I was having a bad day and then boom! Amazing!!
This is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen! Just outstanding! Informative and very soothing to watch!
Wonderful! Love the films as always
So strangely scary but beautiful at the same time! Mesmerizing!
this is what it used to feel like to see a movie i’d been excited for in theaters as a kid! so excited leo thank you! as always you’ve produced an AMAZING film, genuinely my favorite nature documentaries. i actually like your videos more than blue planet, etc bc i love your narration, writing and the style of editing/sound/production, i love that they are “low drama” with gentle music while still being super interesting and engaging. i’m neurodivergent so sometimes i need low-sensory-input media that isnt hitting my ears with cymbals and sound effects! i appreciate details like labeling the animals onscreen, and i feel you go into more detail on the biology/ecology, and provide new info and feature animals i’ve never heard of! i come away with your videos feeling like i gained a deeper understanding of the topic at hand instead of just learning random animal facts. that’s all due to your amazing writing and ability to teach! it’s amazing you do the writing, narrating, editing, sound design etc all yourself, truly professional quality! i hope you’re doing well and uni is going ok! please take care of yourself, you’re doing incredible things! as usual i’m incapable of writing concise comments lol
Hands down THE BEST Marine focused Nature channel on all of UA-cam!
This young man is a master of his craft and his passion for the ocean is evident in every video he makes!
I've been enjoying his content for many years now, even rewatching videos several times over. The one on Hydro Thermal Vents is simply AMAZING!
Thank you for all your hard work. You've provided countless hours of enjoyment and education that can't be found anywhere else!
Absolute DELIGHT to wake up to this morning. I'll see how much of the video I can watch during class - though that's not too likely to be much. I'll finish the video as soon as I get home, though!
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL NO END !!! incredible on every level .. !!! thank you !!! 💕💟❣❤
These video's help me so much. I often have trouble sleeping, and this is the perfect mix of interesting and soothing to shut up my brain and let me doze off. Thank you for making this
I love the deep sea so much, this is just what I needed while on my lunch break.
new video FIVE minutes ago yayyyyyy
your voice is so nice my husband and i love to watch your videos all the time but it’s especially soothing after a long day at work, we get to enjoy the wonders of the ocean and learn so much
This is so beautiful. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I really appreciate it.
PS I grew up watching The Trials of Life - a video series with David Attenborough. To the point where my sister and I wore out our VHS copies of the series. Your videos are the equivalent of that to my little daughters.
Phenomenal channel. Thank you so much for your content and showing off the wonders and beauty of our oceans. Side note: even though it's hard to believe this is where the world is now, the "no AI" disclosure was a nice touch.
Meraviglioso, stupefacente 😮😊
What a lonely cruel life.. nature is so wicked! Another vid to help me be grateful and educated❤
I started this video last night and was blown away by the sheer amount of passion you exude with every word. Absolutely fantastic job!
Staggeringly beautiful
Really enjoy your videos. Thank you
👍👍👍
There can never be enough good deep sea documentaries! Thanks! And thanks to all the people involved!
There is not enough appreciation for those using their time to capture those magnificent pictures! They make it possible that everyone can see the magic. Shout out to all the photographers out there in the wild in harsh conditions! Lots of love to you.
I had to watch this multiple times. Its so mesmerising and the music is SO beautiful and your voice is so calming, I keep falling asleep lol. One of the best deep ocean docos I've ever seen.
I watch your videos during ptsd episodes to give me something soothing and interesting to kinda hold on to and I just wanted to thank you so much for all the help you have given me getting through rough times with these calming yet fascinating documentaries.
Amazing, didn't think there would be such beautiful moments, thanks to the wild nature and the person who made this video.
This channel is my daily got to, to help me sleep. Thank you for the hard work.
The narrators voice is so peaceful and mellifluous
You where made for this mate, your voice is calming and perfect for this film. You remind me of Brian Cox!
This was absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the quality and perfectly annunciated narrative. It’s astonishing how creatures have adapted to life at this depth.
What a treat! Thanks man for your great work.
I watched this, totally absorbed for an hour and had to check the production credits, so surprised that this was, not only not a BBC (or similar) production but also the work of one person! The music, text, narration, and, of course, the images, are the best I have ever seen. I'm now going to rewind and watch it again after this comment. Subscribed.
my finals week at university has been much improved by being able to watch this whenever I get too stressed. Natural World Facts is truly one of the best to ever do it.
so excited to watch this later, the ocean floor is a mysterious and captivating place but ive always been enamored by the life occupying all of that space in the vast water column of the oceans.
I audibly gasped in delight when I saw this uploaded earlier and having to wait until after work was torture!!!! but it is, as always, an absolute delight!
This is the finest deep sea documentary I've ever watched. Everything you create on this channel is just superb! I hope you have a long successful career in wildlife filmmaking. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this young man is the next David Attenborough.
The quality and integrity of your work never ceases to amaze me
58:00 I love the song you guys chose for this squids hunting scene. It's perfect. I love this video all around, really. Thank you so very much for making and posting it for us.
