Great review! Appreciate the testing. I can add a test of the Crucial P3 2 TB with the Acasis: W/R (Bm Speedtest): 2000MB/s / 2370MB/s, so not too bad for a very cheap 2 TB compared to the 980 Pro!

Time flies. 980 PRO 2TB is half the price on Amazon. I'm still looking for a real thunderbolt 4 PCIe 4.0 or newer 5.0 enclousure. All enclosures at the moment of writing are Thunderbolt 3 (and support TB4 with wink 40gbit)
For many years I have used a Thunderbolt2 3 bay HD array for my work drive from my MacBook Pro, I am about to get a Mac Studio and with Apple’s somewhat ludicrous SSD upgrade pricing I am searching for a external solution to retire that noisy raid array, so these little drives and passively cooled enclosures are very appealing. However, I am having problems getting to four terabytes at a reasonable price. It’s good to hear that you recommend the less expensive drives and see that you back that up with testing. Currently my plan is to purchase the 2 bay Sabrent enclosure and run it as a raid, with 2 less expensive 2tb drives. Downside being that it is just TB3 and not USB4 which feels like I am giving up flexibility. Similarly I could go with the OWC 4bay enclosure with 4 1TB drives with plenty or options for expansion, but it reportedly has a quite noisy fan and is also just TB3. I also have seriously considered the Orico enclosure shown in this video with a 4TB drive which would give me the USB4/TB3 compatibility but at the price of 4TB drives, I begin to drift into the price range that makes me think I should just pay Apple’s premium for more internal storage. Also, none of these small enclosures seem to firmly state that they support anything above 2TB. Does anyone have experience with the multi-bay enclosures? Or running a 4TB drive in one of these small enclosures?

I bought a Mac Studio with M1 Max couple days ago and yesterday found out that LaCie arrays don't work with the new apple silicon.
I mean, they do, but my 6big 84tb RAID 5 drive that performs 1000 mb/s both write and read gets ... 50mb/s write and 300 mb/s read with the Mac Studio.
Also, it constantly goes to sleep and wakes even while working in premiere / after effects / lightroom. It ofc causes a 15 seconds freez everytime.
It's been 1.5 years since apple released m1 chips and LaCie still didnt figure it out.
Just felt like sharing it here.

@@murdockscott You're welcome! Just make sure the one you want to invest in is working well with the Mac Studio. I immediately wanted to buy a sandisk extreme pro 2000mb/s for as as a quick solution but I watched people on youtube saying it gets only 600-700 mb/s with the m1 max. My Adata SE700 ssd (1000mb/s) gets only 120 mb/s (!!). My friend has the same problem with his Adata SE900.
It's crazy and absolutely unacceptable.
Hope they fix this any time soon.

Another variable/contributor affecting the speed is the file system format used. APFS yielded the highest speeds for me.
I tested both, I found exFat and APFS to perform similar but APFS is more advanced and has many benefits over exFAT. And remember to not use encryption if you care about speed. That impacts the transfer speeds immensely.
This gets you a sub! I need a LOT of storage for sample libraries as a musician so I'm trying to decide whether going 4.0 is worth it. I'm mostly going to be loading sample libraries and virtual instruments off of them.

great video - i'm looking for something to go with a thunderbolt 3 enclosure for my 2017 iMac now the prices of NVME drives are dropping fast, my worry is overheating as these drives always seem to get really warm, what would you recommend as I'm looking for it to become my boot-up drive

Interesting... great findings, so we are not able to use that top end speed just yet on the macs. Good idea to allocate pricing toward more storage, until we able to achieve that crazy speed.
Guess that depends. I have now heard about some great utilizations of the higher write speed (like using the NVME as a cache drive for blender/After Effects) and there even the 3k write may be worth it. But generally, I would choose storage + read speed over really fast write speed.
I wish you had the crucial P3 Plus or P5 Plus to test which are PCIe 4 (Crucial P5 is only PCIe 3).

I'm considering the Acasis enclsure with the 980 pro 1 TB as cache drive for After Effects on my future Macbook Pro Max. Cache means writing speed is crucial.
That makes sense. I didn't think about this type of use-case before. But recently saw my After Effects cache size and was a bit blown away 🙈.
Samsung Pro drives maintain write speed across the entire drive volume. That's why people will specifically choose them for given sequential write use case. Arguably pcie 3.0 spec 970 Pro will outperform a 4.0 drive that cannot sustain long sequential writes.

I have Mac mini M1 - 256 SSD (I know, I know) I’m looking to use one of my TB3 on a enclosure or a TB external drive.. will be only for Final Cut Pro edition. Can you recommend one, please?

My recommendation is in the videos about the different housings and drives. Please check the description there you'll find most these linked.
Especially with video editing, it's important whether or not your drives have on-board dram caching, id be willing to bet that P5 doesn't.
I have a couple of the Acasis housings along with 970 Evo Plus drives and they perform excellently. 2800 write/2700 read according to Black Magic. I believe they upgraded the controller at some point. I bought one and was so impressed, I bought another. Both perform equally. But I agree there is no reason now to pay the premium for a 4.0 drive. I should add that this is with an M1 Mac Mini. The Evo Plus is 66% of the cost of the Pro and I don't think it would run any quicker.
Gen 4x4 is very much beneficial if plugged into your mobo, but the current USB-C/USB3.2 may not give that throughput. I'm curious to see what read/writes I will get with one of my Gen4x4 drives.
That aside, I'm pleased to see your results with your EVO Plus and the Acasis housing. Looks like I'll be grabbing one to see what results I get. Plus, I've been shopping for an external enclosure.
My mobo has Gen4x4 and Gen 4x2 as well as Gen 3x4 M.2 slots. And it's Gen 5 ready.
The Gen 3x4 is faster than the 4x2. Gen 4x4 is the fastest right now, until Gen 5's come out.

Hey - quick one. When you say USB 3.2 I am assuming you meant USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 because I think USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 is same as US 3.1 Gen 2. Am I correct? Also, how are the thermals for PCie 4 - I am a bit worried to use the Pcie 4 thinking about the 70 degree for these during operation.

Hey thank you for this. I have one of these but I can’t for the life of me, get the applications that I have installed to get software updates. I weren’t into an Apple Store, who said that they didn’t think this was possible. I assumed they just say that as they’d prefer people to pay for higher storage options. If you could provide me with a way of doing this, you’d be a life saver 👍🏼
Not sure which software update you are talking about? I have never updated my NVME and it's working perfectly well in my ACASIS housing without any firmware update. No apple store needed.

Have you had any failures reading hard drives with the Yottamaster through a USB connection?
I could not get two high speed high capacity nvme drives going with it, two 2TB SN8250X's and two 1TB FireCuda 530's would not read and could not be initialized or formatted whilst connected to my PC's Z690 motherboard through usb.
Meanwhile M1 Macbooks and Mac Studios read all of them without a hitch connected through Thunderbolt.
It is most likely one of the two controller chips, the JMS583 for USB, included on most of these enclosures that are just not compatible with some nvme's. I say Some because I did manage to use the Yottamaster enclosure on all fronts with a 970 Evo in it, but that one is only 500GB and not enough space for my intent, so now I worry about getting another 2tb nvme. Have you tested either the 2TB 980 pro or 970 Evo to work through USB specifically?

No, I only use NVME drives which do not have added heat sinks.

I'd really like to see an external PCIe interface that bypasses any kind of USB interface. Seems like it could easily be built onto the backplate of a motherboard. Would make for super fast external drives. Wissen Sie, was Ich meine?

Hey Chris, just subscribed and thanks for all the videos. Hit a roadblock when I went to build a fast nvme external enclosure. I'm going to be editing Canon R5 8K on a Macbook Pro Max and recently bought a 2TB Western Digital Black sn850 for crazy cheap. The specs looked amazing and roughly in the Samsung 980 Pro territory as both are gen 4 nvme's. I went to buy the Acasis Thunderbolt4 enclosure but they had a disclaimer that the WD850 and the 980Pro were not recommended as drives. I reached out to Acasis and they replied that these drives would work but only give under 1000mbps write speeds which seems crazy as the earlier 970 and 750 drives are recommended by them. So gen4 is actually less than half the speed of the earlier gen3 drives in their enclosures. Any thoughts on this or any recommendations on an enclosure that can get better results with the WD 850 pro?

I'm with you Chris. I've run into this also. I can confirm that my SN750 Writes: 2700 MB/s Reads: 2500 MB/s ... and ... SN850 Writes 1300 MB/s Reads 2900 MB/s. They are both in an Orico, C4 model, one of Orico's 40Gbps enclosures. This drive is going to waste as a Time Machine Backup Drive.

Yes, that’s how I’d do it.
I have a usb3 2TB WD Passport ultra and was backing stuff up recently and it was taking ages transferring at 20mb/s on a USB3 port. Seemed far slower than it should be. Tempted to get an nvme and enclosure instead. 2TB would be plenty for me and remove the need for HDD drives. I already removed all HDDs from my PC which now only has Raid0 SSD and an NVMe.

I have the Orico M234C3-U4 enclosure with the Samsung 970
EVO plus. I am thinking about the Samsung 990 Pro . I think it will work but not give me more speed that the 970. I have the M1 iMac with 4 ports. Using the USB 4 40Gb/s port. Do you think the 990 Pro will work and be faster? Thanks.
I have not tested the 990 Pro - though I'd love to and especially get the bigger capacity. But I would assume that the USB 4 + 990 would at least be faster than the 970 in terms of write speed.
I’ll not comment on your conclusion as sich. It will often be a matter of preference, but you missed two significant use cases. One is writing a huge amount of data to the drive (e.g. sustained from a camera). The 100 GB or so content is not nearly enough to stress all drives on the write front. The second use case is the editing scenario, that is completely missed for many normal user situations with only one external SSD (project)drive. Reading is fine for copying to another drive or playing video. Writing is fine for copying into a drive, although 100GB is not really that much these days with ProRES, BRAW and various other RAW formats. The real crux is measuring real projects, reading real life high quality material from the 2TB SSD and also rendering the resulting output back to the same drive (i.e. FCPX or DaVinci Resolve Studio), maybe even caching to the same drive too (just to really stress the system) and delivering a broadcast quality output. Standard h264/5 material to UA-cam is good and fine, but does not really stress the SSD that much during writing (it’s the CPU/GPU getting the massage).

If you really want to be able to use the speed, get the ACASIS USB 4.0 housing (costs around 100 - 130$).
A USB 3.2 2x2 housing can in theory do 20Gbits but in reality with MacBooks it's limited to 10Gbits. That's why you only get the 800 mbps.
You can get the WD_BLACK SN770 (gen 4) for a little less than the SN750 (gen 3)

not all pcie are compatable with all cases out there i found that out when i was looking at cases recentally so your slower speeds are likey a compatabile problem with the cases, also if you want proper thuderbolt peroformance you need a powered case sure its a pain over just plug and go but at least with powererd cases your drive runs faster and cooler and will last longer ,
The Samsung 970 EVO Plus reaches over 3000mbps write and read when installed directly in a pc, but write speeds only, are cut in half when in the enclosure. Wonder why
Yes, when you place the EVO Plus in a computer / PCIe lane directly, then it does perform better. However, the housings seem to have limits on the USB-C lanes. Wonder if at some point there will be a housing that'll go faster.
Why was the 980 pro so slow compared to the advertised speeds? Is the enclosure holding it back or are the speeds just extremely exaggerated? I just ordered a 2tb version for prom day and I might return it now.
External enclosure limitations. Your i/o you plug it in also matters.
inside the M2 slot in PC it will reach claimed speeds. On Thunderbolt, you have to accont maximum theoretical bandwidth which is 40 Gbits/s which is 5000 MB/s, but there are also limitations caused by cable quality, Thunderbolt controller chip and the amount of bandwidth left for daisy chained devices which is given by the standard itself. There is a reason why makers of these external enclosures says “only“ 2500 MB/s as a maximum as they are sustained at 20 Gbit/s for enclosure if it has secondary thunderbolt port (which most of them do) for daisy chaining (so the have to allow 20 Gbits/s for other TB devices connected to the enclosure)
BTW, what SSD read speed is enough to edit 4K via a PC? (i.e USB 3.1 or 3.2- tho I understood it's rare to find laptops with USB 3.2)
You don't actually need that much is what I found. It's more of a problem when you go 8k or you do multi cam sequences and such things with 4k or 60fps stuff.
I actually am able to work off a spinning 2.5" western digital drive and it kinda works… but there are more hick ups than with the NVME Acasis / Samsung 980 Pro.
I would go for the fastest you can afford. If that's a USB 3.2 SSD that's going to be good enough for most things.
@@ChrisSpiegl I read that you need more like 2000Mbps speed to edit/read 4K 60fps footage. But, I really wonder if that's false and 1000Mbps read speed is enough.
What I understand is that Samsung T5 speed of 500Mbps is not good unfortunately... :\
@@eladbari I definitely have a better experience the more speed I throw at things and I am glad to have the 980 Pro at my disposal.
However, I am also using a Western Digital SSD with about 380 MB/s read/write and it worked for 4k 60fps just fine as long as it's not a multi cam sequence.
In theory you can also calculate these things. It all depends on the Bitrate of your footage. Note that a bitrate of 100 mbit/s is not 100MB/s it's actually more like 12.5 Mega Byte per Second. So when you have a bitrate of 100 mbit/s you can easily use a drive with 380MB/s read speed.
In my experience it's the CPU/GPU which does the decoding which struggles first most of the time.
Hello from Ukraine, and thank you for the review! Could you please tell me, what is the maximum speed we can expect via usb 3.2 gen 2 on windows? So fat I only got around 600 write and 700 read in chieftec enclosure (which claims max speed of 10 gbps) with spatium m480 1 gb, which is quite upsetting. I'm reflecting on purchasing a dedicated sata 10 gbps drive instead.
3.2 gen 2x2 should give you 20gbits.
3.2 gen 2x1 should give you 10gbits.
But note that 10gbits is a theoretical max of 1.25 Gigabyte per Second.
There are 8 bits in a byte meaning 10 gbits divided by 8 is the gigabytes per second.
So, the 600 read/write are not perfect but they in the direction of what I'd expect with a 10gbit connection.

You are limited by the USB standard your machine supports. If you have USB 3.2 gen 2x2 slots on your machine, you could use the housing which I tested:

This housing supports USB 3.2 gen 2x2 and should give you faster speeds. Again: this is only true if your computer supports 3.2 gen 2x2! Otherwise this will also fall back to 10gbits.

The reviews say it gives about 600-700 mb/s, which isn't bad, but not close to 20 gbps.Yes, I do have 3.2 2x2, perhaps it's not easy finding something which really gives 20 gbps for an enclosure. Hello. Is it possible to use a 4 TB and a 2 TB and then put it in raid 0?
If you get a housing that can do 2 of those drives, there are ways to set them up that way. But I have never don it for myself. Personally, I'd just manage the drives separately though. Main reason: if you setup a RAID 0 and one of the drives has any issues you'd loos all data on both drives.

Hello. I'm looking for a dual NVMe M.2 or dual sata 2.5 "on 1 cable + RAID, high speed is not needed, but support for ssd 4tb is required (total 8tb).
I don't want a NAS, they are all bulky and rated for 3.5", although I want to put in a pair of 2.5" or m2 ssds. I know about the asus for 6 m2 ssd, but so far this volume is not required.
it is very surprising that ssd has been around for a long time, but there is nothing designed only for 2.5 ".
P.S. I hate hdd, they are noisy, bulky, brittle and die like flies.

There is no 8TB 870Evo. 4TB is good. 8TB is QVO version -> not good.

The real problem is that none of those external drive cases exceed pcie 2 or 3.0 prior to the USB transfer which is a completely separate bottleneck. So, none of these drives will perform at maximum speed no matter what other hardware you use.
Well, if you want to use a PCIe 2 or 3.0 in a USB-C housing… then there really is no other way? Or do you know an alternative housing which does not bottleneck?

True, they are all pretty costly. And the bigger you want to go the more expensive they become. I went with the 980 pro 2tb for now.
P5 plus exists that is only a little more than the P5 and would have been a better comparison.

4TB is hard to come by in M.2 NVME format that is true. And if you find one they are incredibly expensive at the moment.

no reason to do that for external Thunderbolt enclosure where you are limited by multiple factors, 40 Gbit/s bandwidth itself the most important factor, cable quality second.

I bought the Orico 3.2 claimed 20GBS enclosure. After connecting to my 20GBS usb port the read and write speeds are not even close to what is claimed. Buyer beware

20 Gbits, not GB = Gigabytes, which is 8x more as 1 byte = 8 bits.
those are 10x faster than my fresh Seagate Barracuda 1TB SSD for the same price.... Still Barracuda is fast, but even faster=better

@@ChrisSpiegl yes it does you are running a very fast M.2 over USB so you only get USB speeds 200- 300 MB/s heck of allot slower than even gen 3 NVME.
