Personally, I find it much more incredible, respectable and powerful, watching someone like Steve show up to a place and meet a horse, and in that moment he is able to immediately start having a conversation with the horse because he understands horses, how they think and how they communicate. Much more impressive to me to watch a true horseman, working with a horse. They’ve never met before and seeing the horse when it instantly realizes, “oh, this human hears/sees/understands me“ 9 times out of 10 it’s an immediate change. I find that much more respectable than any other style of horsemanship that is focused on a specific result, and takes shortcuts to achieve, said result.
Thank you for sharing information like this that many of us wouldn’t get to see, otherwise. I appreciate that you guys are respectful of other cultures. I think this has a much greater impact or a greater reach, because you are not forcing an opinion, one way or the other, and allowing your audience to decide for themselves.

Spanish horses look very stiff in their backs, and weak behind. Quite unlike Steve’s horses. There’s nothing very edifying about whipping a horse on the bum, so that it kickes out!

I think we all have to admit that sadly harsh practises exist almost everywhere. How many horses have you had to repair in GB and USA, Steve. The very worst cruelty I have witnessed in South American horse trainers in Europe for many disciplines including polo, Western riding both in Europe and USA, closely followed by trotting circuits and that is just the start of the list. Wherever there is big money, cruelty is present. However I do not condemn any horse sport, I condemn cruel individuals not nationalities or sports. There are wonderfully sensitive horse riders in Spain too. I don't, as a rule, like shows but that's just me. I would beg your followers to be open minded and not judge an entire Nation by its rescues. We have plenty in Britain and the numbers are rising, which being an animal lover/rescuer makes me realise nowhere is perfect.

The Amish are also renowned for their abusive & Ill treatment of their horse's, I was quite surprised about this I believed they were a humble god fearing animal respecting community, I suppose when husband & wives are closely related to each other ( second cousins & so on) there's bound to be genetic...... hereditary problems I would ban them from owning any horse or animal if the brain cells aren't quite the ticket, same as I'd ban the sick individuals who promote the big lick in America from owning any horse or animal when I first saw a clip of the big lick horror show I threw my phone & busted the screen I just wanted to get my hands on one of the spineless ugly creeps,....... blood pressure adrenaline racing I swear I could've chewed a brick in half!!!!😡

As a 30+yr rider & 20+yr trainer/coach now specializing in dressage and young horse training, it kills me to see ignorant people in the crowds praising these people that are riding BTV and horses that are so obviously tense (to me) and disunited. Dressage is meant to be about the ultimate horse & rider partnership, unity and communication. There will be abuse and ignorance no matter the country or the discipline but you will also find good riders and trainers. I take my job/passion seriously and I seek to educate others. Thank you for making this video and for trying to educate others as well.

So much fun to be allowed along.
The thing that hits me the most, besides all the ground work miracles, is your (the two of your) incredibly supportive and interwoven relationship and purpose.
Its somehow healing in itself to behold.
Im a divorcee twice now. 73. I’m an old horse person. Haven’t ridden in probably 40 years. But i was raised among good, gentle horses, and the smell of manure still soothes me.
I live on a hill above the Winooski river in Vermont with only cows in the surrounding fields. My companions are a little, sweet dachshund and a lovely young cat. Lizzy and Winnie.
Our lives are simple and full.
Anyway you two, witnessing your shared work has become a blessing to me. I truly believe that you two are dear friends i haven’t met face to face yet.
    Take good care, until then,
    All the best,

PRE and Lusitanos are just the sweetest horses on this planet, they have such big hearts, all they want to do is please their riders and it shows. It’s just in their blood. I really don’t understand why Spanish trainers and riders are using so much violence and pain to « tame » these horses. I wanted to buy a PRE few years ago (trained in Spain, imported in France 2 months earlier), a 9 year old frightened gelding. I usually slide my hand along the horse's buttocks when I walk behind them to let them know I'm there, this one tucked his buttocks in like a mare who's had cold water poured on her vulva. I should have known something was wrong, when I got on it it exploded and I nearly had a very bad accident. So much potential wasted, he was gorgeous and had great gaits..

I so love you all and what you do in life. I miss my Welsh Mountain Stallion Scarborough Stormwind,Section A. He was my love for 22 years. He became in my care at 9 months old. The day I went to bring him home he was being beaten by two big men trying to trim his hooves. They had a chain across his gums tied to the bars on a stall door, one chain across his nose and a twitch on his lip. One man was beating him with a rasp while the other was trying to trim his front hoof. Scar was sliding off his feet on the concrete unable to keep his footing. He was so scared. He was a kind soul, who came to hate people and I weep to this day to think how he suffered. Took ten years to get a good heel on him and set him up right. For that, I must praise Steve McCracken, an Irish Cherokee, for his many years of work. Scarborough left me on April 1, 2021. He is buried on our place and I can say good morning to him every day. Worst April Fool's Day of my life. Had I had Steve sooner in our lives, Scarborough might trust people more. Guess I was his only friend. I Love Horses. My husband says I am too old to care for another. Grandfather gave me my first Welsh Pony Section B.when I was two. Fell off a bunch over the years. Always had horses growing up. Without my friends, I have only half a soul. Long winded yes, but ever so grateful for you, your family, and the love and care you give to all others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul. Bless you always. Keep On Keeping On. Love to you all everywhere you travel in this big universe. Hugs. Randall and Scarborough Stormwind from Culleoka, Texas

@@nobitsnoshoes Abuse is not what she is talking about, in Spain many people have horses at home, and treat them well. Their horses are amazingly trained. I got to ride horses in Piaffe and Passage, Spanish walk, and I never abused one! In the US I would never be allowed to ride highly trained horses as they are rare! In Spain they are very common. They do not compete at this but put on exhibitions for the public. They do not go to excess to win ribbons like so many other countries. They do have a cowboy type competition, sort of like western riding and reining combined. But it takes so much prep to compete that the general public do not do that.

Tying a horse's head down in any form of training is bad practice, it's very damaging to muscles and ligaments etc and creates false movement because it inhibits free movement. The horse is naturally beautiful. The best training I came across was in my last year of being able to ride, 49 years of riding at that stage, Straightness Training, progressive, gentle exercises, encouraging bend, (as you do Steve) gradually building strength & the ability to do more, rewarding every little try, this builds the muscles, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual ability of the horse and they love it, nothing better than building that bond & partnership. No tying down, no pessoas, no serrated metal...
A note on equipment used on horses, even the most perceived gentle items are gentle in the hands of a gentle, knowledgeable individual, but it will still be harsh in the hands of a brute!

My husband was in the Air Force and we were stationed in Rota, Spain for about 5 yrs. I just loved the Andalucian horses and we weren't far from the school in Jerez and went to the horse fair as it was called once. Beautiful horses and seemed like everyone had a horse. I bought one of those saddles and brought it back to the USA but ended up selling it as I wasn't going to have a horse for a long time if ever and it just took up space I did keep the stirrups though. They are super comfy and if bought new, no one is to ride in it but you until it is broken in as the straw that is the seat area forms to you. There are others not done in traditional materials also I believe but I felt that if I'm going to buy one in spain I want one more authentic. I and my husband carried that thing about a mile as the store was a ways away. The bull ring was a block from us also but never went. I wanted to and didn't want to see them. We lived in a town full of bodegas (wine cellars/warehouses) so the area a lot of times, smelled like wine. Loved your video and seeing the shops. My horse will not listen to anyone unless you have a bit or whip, he will do anything you want as long as you are at least using a bit, he ignores your cues when you ride in a rope halter, hackamore, or bitless bridle unless you have a whip or bumper spurs and you are not riding him in a grassy area. Earlier you said that horses shouldn't have metal near their face, every bridle, halter, and bitless bridle has metal somewhere near the horses face.

Had a German breeder of Spanish race here in Germany who started to sell that stuff, sharp Serratas, horrible bits, spurs to cut out ravioli dough with ... and when I spoke my mind at their booth they told ME they had lots of stallions that had to "function" and their tack was just efficient. Have been to their stables once and the whole line of stallions I saw had huge serrata scars on the back of their noses. Either acquired in Spain or even here in Germany. Was speachless.
At that booth I told them that I as a beginner had successfully started a young stallion on my own and never needed tools to hurt the animal. I know I was lucky, had picked a good tempered sensible and wholesome horse (left this earth after 26 mostly happy years) but my "soft" approach would have worked out for several others, was worth a try. Of course I had to stand my ground sometimes, as young horses have to learn things, try out some crap, and have to build up trust, just like children. But being consistent and force & cruelty are still two different things.
There are quite brilliant horse people on the Iberian peninsula - no doubt! They still do cattle work with horses - long horned ganado de lidia, and thats a no -nonsense job, of course. These horses are strong, lots of power, stamina and perfect balance to escape the horns just in case. Its stunning to watch.
Remember, the ancient "dressage" was preparation for combat, reins dropped, hands free to fight, made to safe horse and man whatever it took. Still based on natural movements of the horse.
Did you know some of those bits they call "castigo" = "punishment" in translation? Well, Western folks also use some strange bits and do not hold the reins like silk threads, either, same with curb bits in high dressage...
About the horse-bin-situation: Exactly. 2nd horse or leading it past that stuff showing the horse its no big deal.

Just like how folks learn your wonderful ways of horsemanship training, it's possible to rehabilitate the land and restore the natural grasslands. There are some amazing ranches in the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico that looked so similar, but have been transformed. There is a horse "training" popular in Kentucky called "the Big Lick." The Spaniards, while not great, in my opinion don't compare to the Big Lick's cruelty. Even without comparing methods, the difference in these horses' behavior from those in Kentucky are world's apart. the Big Lick Horses are drooling saliva. Their eyes are round and white from terror and pain. The gait is wholly unnatural and awkward. El Rancho's horses know how to be cheeky. There is a not a mark on them and their coats are glossy. The riders seem to take great pride and pleasure from the horses talents. I didn't see any of the trainers or riders get angry or lay any of the whips enough to make a mark. Maybe this isn't the hallmark of best practice, but neither is it anywhere near abuse. Really. A.R.C.H. shows us what real abuse and neglect is. and straight out poverty.

Thanks for sharing your trip, great video.
With regards to the "Polo mint" horse, I am not quick to judge. What I see is a high-spirited horse that was taking its "trick" to the max - why be caught when you can keep on looking for tasty treats? It is not necessarily indicative of a horse not liking its handler.
And it could be that a little freedom was being exploited by the horse.
With regards to high-school shows, it all depends how the horses are trained. If training is done progressively, patiently and within the bounds of the horse's ability, then all is good. For example, the Lippizanners (the epitome of high school) are trained over many years through top quality horsemanship.

Love Spain but hate the way they sometimes treat animals. About the last video part: I've heard it about my own horse - Got it with 2 years. walked it!!! until it was 3,5 before riding it. Many people wondered why I often got off the saddle and led it, like crossing the German Autobahn on a bridge for the first time or going a steep bit of way down somewhere. "He will run you down, you crazy!" they cried and I knew, that was not the case, knew my horse, controlled it from the ground, had its confidence, most of the time. Point is, if they do not lead very confidently, you better stay in the saddle. But if the rider does not feel safe there, its still no good.
Using an experienced lead horse is a wise thing but many will try to force it through and rather beat up a horse than use those good old efficent and gentel "tricks". Ignoring horses are herd animals and learn from watching each other.
