What state you live in? If you dont mind me asking. I have a 1988 kx250 i bought from a police auction in 2015 n i never did anything with it i played with it for like 15 mins. It sits in my shed ever since. Its doesn't run. They said it did but i never got it running it needs work.
You see rust on the crank, clutch all in the clutch side where it's been sitting for who knows how many years without a cover, completely seized bearings, and you think it is going to spin over. You also think taking the clutch off will magically make it shift lol.
The clutch plates are all gone to so you might as well just order a bunch of parts strip the bike all the way down and do a full restore a an actual cool bike for once

1. engine locked up 2. rear sub frame snapped 3.jb weld4 no engine case 5. clutch. basket is toast 6. every. bearing on it is pitted 7. it’s dead .on a positive note the front sprocket guards fetch $40
He goes and buys bikes, works on them to the best of his ability, and records it for us to watch. Would you rather he sit inside on his phone like most guys his age? So, yeah I give him props for doing what he is doing.

You should take it all apart n clean everything n part it out to see how much you make...it can be saved sure but the amount of money it will take is not worth it if your not going to keep it forever.
cain sample Without a doubt it would cost more to restore than its worth. To make it like new would cost probably $4k or so and lots of work. Parting it out is probably the best option.
Good to see you working on these old bikes. I’ve been racing and working on dirt bikes for 35 years and some friendly advice would be for you to always wash your bikes first before you work on them
Send the pipe out to Pacific Crest pipe repair in Oregon. Look them up online. I sent my factory works pipe there for my 91 WR500Z and had a complete redo on it to factory works finish for 150 bucks with shipping included. That guy does an amazing job and it's way cheaper than a new pipe

Dannielle Brightbill i have one also and luckily found a site that makes a Billet waterpump impeller . The stock plactic ones usually seperate from the shaft over time and usually found out after bike has overheated from no coolant flow .
Id part that out what you can,Thats going to be an expensive restore if you go ahead with it,full engine rebuild,lots of new parts needed,frames snapped,could end up being a huge money pit.
It’s restorable, just going to cost lots of $$$ I’m restoring an 86 which is pretty much the same and I’m in too deep to pull out now. Might be cheaper to restore in the US. Good luck!
Yes it can be fixed😀👍 the shift rod may be missing a part for the detents, gotta split the case bro. It will take a month at least to get it broke down and replace all the bearings and clean everything, prob a new main gear set and secondary. Shift drum assembly, forks ect. You can do it!👊😎
After doing 3 complete 85 YZ250's never again..Took 6 months to find a power valve assembly..No seals are to be found..There are very few parts available..These mid 80's YZ's are for people with the knowledge of 2 stroke bikes..So now you have all these bikes that need complete restores and you keep stacking them up and don't have a clue what your doing..But I guess it's good to see the seller got rid of that YZ..He knew better than to keep it..Unless you have the knowledge this bike is doomed to your collection of parts bikes..I would break that YZ down,clean all the parts and sell them..Get wise and understand that buying bikes is easy..It's knowing what to do with them now you own them..I'd rather have one nice jem then a pile of bikes that are messed up..Have fun getting the rear shock back to normal..They are always trashed unless they were completely restore by a professional.Oh ya,,have fun with the goose neck bearings..Ha ha...There's no doubt the engine mount bolts are seized into the frame from rust..I think he has shown us he has no idea what he's doing.Can't wait to see what he does when he gets to the power valve..What's this? Let's hammer it out..Give me a sledge bro..I'll fix it. He should invest in tools and 2 stroke manuals and learn something and fix the first bike he bought..Oh ya..Have to have an impact gun to remove flywheel nuts..We will not see this bike ever do wheelies on a track again..
Got a 90 yz 250 that a guy shot the engine at 100yds with a 30-06. Jug etc toast! He got mad, allegedly it was not running well. Great vid, I see a lot of stuff like that here. Crazy!😅
I hope u know what ur getting into here joe. Ur going to need A LOT of time and $ to get this going. U need a new clutch, crank, piston, bearings, seals, plastics, seat, air filter, and about a million little things. Cant wait to see it done tho! Good luck!
Your gonna need a whole new clutch system. As well as a new top end. That basket is shot an im almost certain the piston n rings are as well. Good luck on this one Joe. Your gonna need it!!

Looks like your addicted to buying used dirt bikes, so am I. I bought street legal 1985 Honda XR 600. At first I thought it was a great deal until I took it to the mechanic. It needs a complete top end rebuild and it cost me $900 already plus another $900 later. It is not even fixed yet even though I brought it there during Christmas break. This makes think twice before buying any old dirt bike.
Fun fact I got this free Foreman 450 and in the storage compartment in the back had a whole nest of baby birds so it was two projects instead of one lol
You should restore this bike back to original because of how rough it is ... be an awsome project and saving an old bike that would otherwise be scrapped

@@AcousticNRG been honest m8 a would love it its worth £250 all day to me, it's not gonna take much to do, he mite not even need a piston yet that rusts sitting on ally so it'll clean up,the bore will clean up, split the cases,new mains and crank bearing, gearbox bearings may be OK aswell if he's got oil in. Only hard part might be finding a good basket and casing👍
You can fix anything edit and I am 1st and what will you do with the dirtbike Just scrap the parts and sell them or try to make it run again and keep it
Same shift thing happen on my old 65 I fixed under clutch back where the shifter connect pop off and put back on if not it’s not catching and you have to sand down the edges so it grabs
Just toss in a modern yz 250 motor polish it up and pawn it off. Keep the motor slowly build it over time. That motor is fucked. Might be able to salvage the jug, if you're lucky lol

Just because it's all there doesn't mean it should be restored. The sub frame is all bent and cracked, i bet there's more than one of these in way better condition except they need just a couple parts to finish that this one has, so why restore the one shitty one when it could probably save multiple better ones..?
What I would do is just tap the cdi box gently ,and just make sure all the wires have good contact,on the coil and the cdi,,check the kill switch wires,,I had a quad that was a week old,and the cdi was faulty,,just go over it,checking all the wires and electrical connectors have good contact,,to me sounds like the plug,cdi,coil,kill switch,you can eliminate the faults with a multimeter,,hope u get it done,,also if there is a key on your model check the wiring going to it,,,and also it could be a bad earth,,

He should show receipts on how much he spent on the bike and how much was donated then you will know if you got scammed

I had a 1986 YZ125. Getting parts was not too bad between partzilla, eBay, and online forums. I had more problems finding parts for my 1986 CR125.
I rode a 2 stroke 87 yz 250 it had a lot of power and was running great. It was my friends grandpa's bike.
That clutch basket is D.O.N.E. done bro, look at all the grooves in the basket that will cause the clutch to not release!

I think you should part it out. Sub frame is broken. Engine is rusted so bad, and the crank is probably worse.

The 2 best engine cleaners imo are easy off oven cleaner and purple power. They work wonders

Shifting issue...rusty...the shift shaft passageway could be rusted. the shifter forks could be rusty...heck, all the gears.... Can you say "WD-40?"

Invest in a socket set with bigger sockets its definitely worth it.

The front fender is wrong for the year of the bike, the fender is more for a 2001 to 2004.
If I were you I would just take the loss and part this one out. Way to much money and work will be needed to get this old bike going again
