Steven Spielberg admits he didn't want to do Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

- In this documentary (found on the Crystal Skull DVD), Steven Spielberg admits he did not want to have aliens as a plot in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Not only that, but he admits that he didn't want to do another Indy movie PERIOD. He was coerced into doing the movie and the alien plot by George Lucas. He felt that the Indy franchise should be left alone since it ended on such a good note.
I, like many Indy fans, was severely disappointed in the Crystal Skull. It's not that it wasn't a good sequel, it's the fact that it was just a bad movie in general, in my opinion of course. I felt the problems all lied in the script since it actually had a pretty high production value. I felt not only was the movie dumbed down for today's audiences and children, but loaded with unnessecary CGI. Within the FIRST 10 seconds of the movie, we see a CGI prarie dog which pops up 3 more times for "comedic effect." Between the fridge, the monkeys, the waterfalls, the alien saucer and the bad dialogue...to me it felt more like National Treasure than an Indiana Jones movie. Also, it felt like whoever wrote the script, never bothered to watch the first three (which wasn't the case).
That said, I love Steven Spielberg. His movies were part of the reason I wanted to get into filmmaking, I grew up on them. And for Mr. Lucas, he wrote 6 (3 star wars, 3 Indy) amazing movies in my opinion. So I mean no ill will toward them, just a disappointed fan, movie goer, and Indy fan. This is the ONLY movie of Spielberg's I would call "bad." Pretty good track record if you ask me, over 30 years of filmmaking. - Розваги
"They're not aliens they're inter-dimensionals" is such a George Lucas thing to say. 😂
It's actually a popular theory in the UFO community. It would explain the apparent immunity to the laws of physics that observed 'craft' often exhibit.
@@haitolawrence5986 so they live on Earth but in another dimension? Is that what people think
Fine! Fine! Well what do they look like?
They look like aliens.😂
He had it repeated TWICE just to make the audience understand it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
aliens = extraterrestrial beings outside Earth, whether they came from outer space or inter dimensional, if it looks like an alien, swims like an alien, and quacks like an alien, they are an alien!
5:10 "We created Indiana Jones but now it belongs to the world."
No! It belongs in a museum!
+Jon Watson So do you!!! Throw him over the side!!! :D
so do you
Skull belongs in a sealed tomb it was dire.
So do George Lucas, this movie's special effects, and Sean Connery.
Well given Indanas track record with rare artifacts, a museum is the last place it will end up. George listen to Stephen he knows what he's talking about.
"But George _insisted_, 'It'll be just like a B-movie!'"
And that's exactly what it turned out to be, if even.
+AtenRa To be fair, all of the Indiana/Star Wars films were inspired by B movie serials from the 1940's.

Lol you gotta admire Steven and George’s ride or die friendship though. The way Steven describes the interactions is so kid-like, true pal energy.
They're both pedophiles and there are verified quotes from both of them discussing sexual attraction and engagement with minors during their long successful careers

It feels like History Channel. Where it was first about actual history and archeology and now we got Erik von Danniken and his companions shouting aliens to everything they see coz some of these structures of ancient antiquity we can't explain with our modern construction techniques of making hideous concrete boxes and steel skyscrapers that we punch out of the ground extremely quickly and wouldn't even survive 100 years w/o constant maintenance.
George Lucas wanted to do a haunted castle like movie for Indiana Jones 3 but Steven Spielberg didn’t want to because he did Poltergeist back in ‘82, as if his ideas are like a been there done that sort of thing.
@@patrickwilson1459 would've loved to see something like that instead of Last Crusade. I liked it but it felt super safe and for little kids compared to the first 2. It also felt too much like Raiders to me, so I don't get Steven's “been there done that” argument lol.
@@tricko8000but I think that was intentional. Considering how divisive temple of doom was at the time, that last crusade was a good time to go back and play it safe.
"Indiana Jones And The Saucer Men"
It was at this moment Speilberg should have just left the room and had George committed.
THIS TITLE WORKS AS THE B-MOVIE FEEL... ITS WIERD AS A MOVIE TITLE AND, IT WORKS!!!!! The original title was Indiana Jones and the City of Gold. I remember a concept teaser was shown using the title there, then the official trailer came with the final title.... LOVE
Spielberg is responsible for every piece of shit second of that film. He directed the entire fucking thing. He's responsible for it all, as is every director for the film he shoots. Lucas didn't direct it. Lucas didn't write the script. He only approved the script. If Spielberg didn't want to do it, he should have declined. He's simply trying to whitewash the turd he churned out.
Now they're making Indy 5 and when Lucas opted out and wanted nothing to do with it, Spielberg chickened out and backed out as director because he knew he'd have nobody to blame anything when that film turns out to be shit.
Spielberg is full of it.

Harrison Ford loves playing Indiana Jones and it's his favorite character to play.
Even though Crystal skull was the worst of the films it was still wonderful to see Harrison play Indiana again.
@Anthony Headway he's not really a star wars fan. Just not a fan of the story's world.
How can you say that is was the worst
If even Indy himself doesn’t want the story to end yet then maybe Harrison knew something Spielberg didn’t 🤷🏼
Indy is character driven not story driven. We’ll go with Indy on any adventure…especially Marion and Indy!
He always said The Mosquito Coast is his favorite movie and role
"He said, 'Yeah, they're not aliens, they're extra-dimensionals.' I said, WHAT!!???"
LOL Spielberg's face at 3:23
The fact that he said all this stuff and acting like he didn't want to do it, makes me wonder why Spielberg agreed to
+Caleb Folts Humoring an old friend.
Possibly he didn't wanted to piss off Harrison Ford and George Lucas
+adamzanzie How semantically pedantic of him. If they are from outside our dimension then they are foreigners or *aliens* in our dimension. Lucas mincing words and still falling short of reaching the mark... probably just to avoid admitting he was wrong or it was a bad idea in that moment so he was reaching for some sort of defensive explanation... sigh.
+Aamir Ali The best part is how for many, many years it was Harrison Ford who insisted they should never make another Indiana Jones movie, backed up by Steven, but then almost all the blame was put on his back for nagging Lucas and Spielberg to make another. Amazing how Lucas went scot-free from his concept he wrote almost 25 years ago.
Anyway, the franchise actually had a great 4th part. IJ and the Fate of Atlantis. And that game was created by REJECTING the original script for what years later turned into Crystal Skull.
See, I actually like Lucas' idea of making it in the spirit of 50's sci-fi B-movies, it really IS the natural cinematic progression from the 30's serials the originals were based off of. My only real complaint with Indy 4 is that it's uninspired, it's got a "same old, same old" nostalgic feel that while enjoyable, wasn't thrilling. I don't think it's actually a bad movie, but it does make you long for Raiders and Crusade more.
It's also shot REALLY REALLY BADLY. Kingdom of the Crystal skull visually LOOKS WORSE than any other indiana jones movie beforehand, even I understood that even as a kid. Lucas has proven that he doesn't know how to make a movie look good from how he plasters CGI all over the place!
George: Let's do aliens.
Steven: I don't wanna do aliens.
Years later...
George: Maybe you're right. We shouldn't do aliens.
Steven: George, I love ya!
George: We should do inter-dimensional beings.
Steven: What?!
George: Yeah, ever heard of string theory? They're from another dimension.
Steven: Fine! Fine... What do they look like?
George: They look like aliens.
Steven: *_facepalm_*
This story is the best thing to come of Indy 4.
Maybe if that story was better fleshed out, it could have been a pretty great sequel, instead of what we unfortunately got.
Steve.. comon.. don't fold like that buddy
Uhhhh no, it was the Nuke Town map for Call of Duty Black Ops, THAT was the best thing to come out of the movie overall.

LMAO 🤣🤣🤣
I've seen Raiders of the Lost Ark atleast six million times and I have no problem with the *idea* of the fourth film. The alien angle, the rock n roll kid, grumpy old Indy and the soviets were all fine ideas, it's just the awful execution and terrible script that killed it.
Same. I am fine with the alien concept. I just wish the film was handled a bit better.
***** I think the sci-fi angle was cool and a natural direction to take it. They clearly drew inspiration from red scare cold-war era movies about evil invaders and flying saucers. They *certainly* shouldn't have shown the alien though, that was a huge blunder. Almost as big a blunder as the monkeys, the fridge, the ants, the gophers, anything else made with terrible CGI and ofcourse the dialogue.
No matter what term they used, it did come across as 'just another' alien sequence and seemed rather anti-climactic, at least to me. Mr. Spielberg's initial instincts were right, in my opinion. And yes, Mr. Lucas is a visionary. It doesn't make him right every time out. But no doubt they're both geniuses, regardless of what one thinks of this film.
Combining aliens & ancient civilizations with their relics - Stargate did it in 1994, then followed it up with 2 successful series.
I totally agreed with everything you said. The Alien idea was genius, considering it's the 50's and the area 51/ Rosewell era but the lack of execution and story telling failed it.
The fourth Indiana Jones movie should've been Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
I think Indiana Jones and the patriot games would be a good movie. Or indian jones and the quest for cowboys and aliens. Or ooh even better Indian Jones and Boba Fett hunt for enders game.
Funny, I just angered two "fans" whom were passionately defending Crystal Skull as being the same quality as the trilogy.
***** I'd prefer to call them either rip-offs or just laziness as opposed to an homage. What was original was pure garbage. I don't think anyone was expecting the same, but certainly not a Saturday morning cartoon. I've seen better villains in Care Bear movies.
+hectorbolshevik The fourth Indiana Jones movie should've been titled Indiana Jones and the Retirement Fund for Harrison Ford.
+hectorbolshevik I remember hearing that as a potential title in the early 2000's. Was that actually a thing?
Still waiting on this movie to get the starwars prequel treatment of going from loathed to loved
We’ll see what happens when the Spielberg and Lucas-less Indy 5 from Disney finally comes out. Lol
It’s already starting to happen...
I liked it. The film was decent. Didn't touch the first three but it was a good movie. Also I liked the star wars prequels. Think clone wars has also somehow made them better.
I have not seen the prequel love of which you speak.
Thats the comment I was looking for, we can see the parallels, really hope Indy 5 is good but I have learned with the shitty sequels that when there is no passion for the project, it can be the worst thing ever.
George has a great imagination, but doesn't have the capacity of
Properly executing them in film in a way that doesn't ruin the experience.
MORE BULLSHIT.
George Lucas "executed" his idea's the way he wanted to. You say that the execution of his stories is shit because you don't like what he made, not because George is narrow minded and doesn't know how to make films, he has lot's of education and has been in the business for years. I seriously doubt you understand how to "execute" stories into good films to the point that you can definitely deem Lucas as a failure. You could have atleast been original with your complaints rather than quote the most cliche Lucas sucks quote in the book.
Star Wars 4 5 6 were good tho
@@VictoryReviews The general over-arching plot of the Star Wars I-III was good too. But it was filled with a poor script, sub par acting, unnecessary CGI, a sudden change to a kids film (minus the third), and the plot really could've been condensed into 2 films.
@@blankname2101 There's a reason he got other people to write/direct the sequels to Star Wars though (Empire and Return). In fact, when making THX 1138, he didn't want to write the script because he wasn't confident in his writing abilities, but Francis Ford Coppola talked him into writing a draft, and upon seeing it, he basically said "Yeah, this sucks" so they got a co-writer for the film (if I remember correctly). So based on that I can't say that it's a coincidence that the critical reception to the Star Wars prequel films was so harsh compared to the original trilogy. All of the evidence points to him not being great at executing things when it comes to writing and directing. He's an idea man, he's very visionary, but unless he's working with other people, whenever he thinks of something he *could* do, he rarely stops to ask if he *should*
I think Lucas went a bit mad with power after the 80s.
i thought his stories were good, he gave us star wars and indiana jones for god sake, now people are criticizing him because of bad acting, aliens or to much cgi
Well he did write the Crystal Skull and Red Tails, and 2 Ewok movies everyone forgets about. Then again he also did Willow. See HIS original trilogy had lots of help and input from other people. They were a collaborative effort like filmmaking should be. The prequels were all him though, so the blame for those pieces of garbage fall entirely on his shoulders. His response after the prequels was saying he would never make a star wars movie again. But wait George you had said that there were 9 movies in your plan. And then you even said Disney didn't want your ideas for 7, 8, and 9? Your making this up as you go along aren't you? I've seen the Empire deleted scenes Leia was never originally Luke's sister was she?
now starwind........the sequel trilogy as of right now sucks because of terrible story and terrible characters
My opinion was Star Wars was great as that original trilogy like Indiana Jones was. Disney has done better then the prequels and the 2 ewok movies but... They are no where near as good as the originals and in no way better so making them is all about cash now. Why make them if they aren't going to be better, money that's why. Disney spent a ton so we will get a lifetime of Star Wars now. Disney also fucked up by not planning out the next three stories so they are now making it up as they go along more or less. Hell even the Force Awakens was getting rewrites mid way through filming. It's a case of you can't go home again. Also why I hope to hell that Hollywood stays away from things like a Back to the Future remake or sequel.
LMFAO I hope that's sarcasm. If not then what exactly is good about the prequels? """Story"""?, Characters?, and you can't say light saber fights since that was one of the worst parts.

ah, so Spielberg was in debt to Lucas. That would make sense.
Well, now that I know it was *supposed* to be like a B movie, it makes a lot more sense.
The problem is that even the old ones were supposed to be like that.
Personally I thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was too similar, or at least overly similar considering the new setting.
Yeah, see, I knew that going in and I still like it. But if you study the first trilogy, you could've figured out what they were doing without being told.
Knowing where George was coming from and what he was trying to do the movie makes so much more sense

honestly george describing what he wanted sounded like a good movie
Great ideas, poor execution. Classic George Lucas
Even when Spielberg heard Lucas was dropping aliens, spielberg is like that is the best decision you've made in the past 30 years and lucas said they're from inter dimension, Spielberg must of been thinking in his head " Really? That is even more stupid than fucking aliens."
lol
+Yorick Moran I never cared where they are from, although the description felt lame, it is unknown though how the real existing skulls(in British Museum) were made so perfectly out of crystal back then, couple of thousands years ago...
The fact that they still made then look like aliens, made the idea even more stupid.
If George wanted to do a 1950s sci-fi B-movie, that’s fine. But Indiana Jones just doesn’t work with that kind of setting. A movie about the crystal skulls could work with Indy, cause they’re already sort of historically mythical artifacts. But aliens just don’t work at all.
LOL What? HELL no, the best decisions for Lucas to make in the past "30 years" was making Revenge of the Sith and the World Building of the prequel movies. Stop with your ignorant hating nonsense you fool as you're not proving anything here.

All of the 4 have largely positive reviews.
They should’ve taken more time with the script. If they were doing interdimensional beings, would not have been interesting to see possibly traveling to other dimensions with time travel mixed in? Like a dimension where the Nazis won World War II thanks to the Ark, or even moloram dominating the world or of course Germany claiming the Holy Grail? In the state of mind that Indiana is in at the start of the film, would it not of been fascinating seeing him look at the possibilities of him not succeeding or him not getting involved in these key moments in his personal history set against the fact that he has a child born out of wedlock? Like he wasted his life? I guess George Bailey done by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

I hope you're serious, because youre right! That epidiomises the entire theology of the Myans worshiping their "gods" and aliens that MAY crashed onto Earth and could look like that. It's a switch of the Day the Earth Stood Still mixed and a bit of Tomb Raider in there with the super alien elements!
@@SB992REBORN I was serious. I actually liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It had its ridiculous moments, like Mutt swinging through the trees like the monkeys Or Indy surviving being launched hundreds of feet inside a refrigerator by the shockwave of a nuclear blast. But the plot didn't bother me.
The Indiana Jones films have upheld religious stories and pulled from different legends and treated them all as undeniable fact. Alien influence has been a long-running narrative ind a variety of circles concerning Egyptian and Mayan architecture. So I don't understand why so many people got hung up over that being the underlying theme of the movie. We got Indy back. Marrion, too. A plausible character for Indy to one day pass his torch to. And Indy was the same Indy we've known since the IP has existed.
You know, I have to wonder... If Raiders of the Lost Ark had come out in the Internet age, would it have come across as being as beloved by the global audience, or would have all these armchair critics hiding behind text on a screen ripped it up one side and down the other like they do everything else?
@@Opnn8d1 Right! They would say it’s too religious and the spirits of God at the end would unhinge them.
I think the biggest mistake in this movie was explaining that Sean Connery (Indy's father) was dead. The man drank from the holy grail in Last Crusade. He should have been living disease free at least for several more decades than he normally would have lived. They didn't have to mention him or explain that he was dead just because Sean Connery didn't want to be a part of this movie.

+iLikeTheUDK That was always my feeling too.
iLikeTheUDK Atlantis would've been cool! How about it would be about the Russians on the hunt for the city of Atlantis?
iLikeTheUDK they should have done a 4th Indiana Jones movie around the years 93-95ish and had Indy involved with World War 2 since he was a colonel in the OSS and make it a fictional adventure that ended as a result of an actual event like D-day, Dunkirk or battle of the bulge since many things could have gone wrong during those battles which would have had a history changing result.
@@simonphoenix5768 "actual event like D-day, Dunkirk or battle of the bulge since many things could have gone wrong during those battles which would have had a history changing result." NONE of those battles had a history changing event. The Wehrmacht was defeated on the Eastern Front. Period. By the time the allies launched D-day Germany had been on the retread for over a year and were now at the borders of Poland.
You can read all about it on official German military archives (Feldgrau) and AxisHistory. An eye opener for the ignorant. To put it simply, 80% of the German casualties were on the Eastern Front. Also in June 1944, there were 192 German divisions tied on the Eastern Front all the way from Finland to Romania (you can't even find those countries on a map) whereas 64 were in France. 192 German divisions in the east vs 64 in France. Where was the war decided again?? You absolutely sure those battles you mention were so crucial for the overall defeat of the Third Reich??
Feldgrau and AxisHistory. They both use official records from the war. Learn a thing or two.
Nothing could have gone wrong during those battles. Germany was already beaten and desperately short on oil, metals, men and raw material. The only thing it did was saving the western part of continental Europe from the reds. And Dunkirk?? Why not the far more important battle of El Alamein? Do you only know whatever you see in Hollywood films??
Another thing: Indiana Jones isn't a soldier. Never was, never will be. He doesn't even like the government who fooled him in Raider of the Lost Ark. And who needs him to *completely rewrite history* are you for real? It's insulting on a ton of levels.
As for making a 4th Indiana Jones movie in 93-95. 1) Harrison Ford already said before they made The Last Crusade that it would be absolutely the last time he was Indiana Jones. 2) Steven Spielberg wanted a trilogy and end on a high. 3) George Lucas was busy shooting his rather bad "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles".

Retro Universe People just like to blame everything on George Lucas.
It’s because the problem isn’t necessarily just that they made another Indy movie. It’s the movie they made that’s the problem, and it sounds like most of the conceptualizing for what the movie ended up being was done by George.

The originals did a fantastic job of mimicking 1930 serials. I think it was a great idea by George to have this one mimic 1950's Sci-Fi. It seems like that idea may have been lost along the way a little, because the film didn't really come across that way to me.
Other interviews have said Steven insisted on shoehorning in the "treasure hunt" for the skull, which ends up being a bizarre diversion in the movie. They explain that John Hurt RE-HID the skull in that cave, which kind of ruins the whole art of the treasure hunt. If you're hunting for an ancient treasure, shouldn't Indy be the one to discover it for the first time? Not getting some other treasure hunter's sloppy seconds.

There were 3 movies. No more. No less.
3:35 "So I said, 'Fine...fine.'"
Famous last words.
"I thought that it was a terrible idea, but George insisted"
Saucer men? Someone needs to take Lucas out back Old Yeller style.
India Jones is one of the best franchises out there, but aliens in the last one fucked it up.
no, bad scriptwriting and really bad decisions like too much CGI fucked it up. In the end: another in an endless list of movies that simply should not have been made!
***** That too, but I mean aliens? After amazing other Indiana Jones movies, why the fuck add aliens?
The The Haha dumbass, I said the franchise. This Alien movie was shit. I DO enjoy the prequels, except episode one. you're probably one of those "fans that enjoyed The Force Awakens
The The should've won the Nobel Peace prize, oscars, best movie of the motherfucking year, and best cgi! Now you're a REAL sad person for dissing the prequels, but supports shit movies like TFA smh. Shame on you! 😢
The The Indy 4 was completely stupid af. That movies shouldn't have been made
George Lucas.
Enough said.
saucer men...seriously George, go get us some coffee or something
MephilesRider The creator of the Star Wars saga, Indiana Jones and American Graffiti.
Enough said.
He created Indiana Jones in the 1st place you fucktard
Moral of the story is... Don't listen to George
+Raff Real - Diaz Jar jar is the key to all of this ...
+VinceMX I'm assuming its because they are friends and he didn't want to crush George haha
VinceMX exactly. I agree.
Or Harrison? didn't he say it was Harrison's idea?
+Christus Regnet it was Ford's idea for the Bladerunner sequel as well. Let's hope that one works out. It should, because....no Lucas.
GEORGE LUCAS !!!!! How many trilogies can he spoil?
sanch Sanchayan the same number of brilliant & hugely successful ones he created I would guess
So 1 then?
***** two... He ruined the Star Wars trilogy, and he ruined the Indiana Jones trilogy
+Ono Jin He created nothing. The editors made the original Star Wars series what they were.
+Who Cares Calm down, Skippy. As I stated, the final product that was the first film had little to do with Lucas.
This movie was doomed from the start. I really hope they can take it back to a film that feels more raidersesque.
I doubt it.
It wasn't "Doomed" from the start, it was just VERY poorly executed but it could have been done better.
Indians Jones and the yada yada yada....I would love to see that.
DaveKarl, What's the story?
Paul Pruett, Do you have a title?
Costarring Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander.
Indiana Jones and saucer men .................(facepalm)
Wire Frame He did want a 50s b movie vibe.
Wire Frame But then came the title “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, instead. That was a much better title for a movie than “Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men” or some crap like that.
Indiana Jones And The Saucer Men?
Indiana Jones And The Attack of the Giant Ants?
Jesus, I thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a shitty title!
lol
***** Indiana Jones and the Assault by the CGI Prairie Dogs.
***** Indiana Jones and The Quest To Shit On The Series.
***** LaBeouf
***** Indiana Jones & the Search for Regularity. :) Oooh.
I dont think Spielberg's heart was in this film like it was with Raiders and Last Crusade.
I would argue that The Temple of Doom has more heart in it than the others.
@@albundy7794 literally, gally mar.
and now here we are now with Indiana Jones The Dial of Destiny on the Way!
😂 There will always only be three movies in my world.
George Lucas is the only person I know who enjoys destroying their own work. Do you see Christopher Nolan releasing an Inception Special Edition?
He does get abit obessed like that, how many special editions, or remasterings of Starwars Trilogy hes done.
Nolan is currently remasting Batman trilogy though
Wait until the next 10 to 15 years
Julius Ulit That is pretentious drivel to begin with.
Julius Ulit I like the Star Wars Special Editions. People don’t give them enough credit, but they improved many things in the saga.
I didn't mind the whole transition from 1930's action-adventure to 1950's sci-fi concept, and I was also always interested in the fascinated by legend of the crystal skulls, but the way that this movie was executed was just horrible. The script, the acting, and the overall plot was garbage. I still enjoyed it though but certainly was a disappointment to the franchise.
コボアンドレス I really have to wonder what film they would've made had they not let the success of Independence Day skew their original plans.
a flawed fun movie, nothing to be overly upset like some films (cough cough tlj lol)
Even though it’s inferior to the original trilogy, it’s not a bad movie
I think I'm one of the few people who legitimately like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Placed in the 50s, a time where Aliens as concept was really taking off( no pun intended ). Plus with only afew lost civilizations and treasures why not include something more sci-fi? Interdementional beings are also kinda a more exepted idea for fiction these days.
Also there's just alot of stuff I like. The jungle, the father son dynamic, the references to Cold War Era espionage and secret programs. The new special effects that led way to more veriaty of action scenes, the return of the girl from the first movie. And the crystal skull itself is just a cool plot device.
how does george come up with the best and worst ideas
Scott Coleman seriously... makes no dang sense.
I almost cried when I left the cinema at the midnight premiere after watching Indy 4. Almost cried from disappointment...
I know, right?! Me too!! I was SO MAD!
yeah!
We all cried a little that day
Kalle72 ugh! You're whining cause it had aliens you dumb baby
it wasn't garbage you guys are being over dramatic
How about Indiana Jones and the Ocarina of Time
TheAnGryPOolMaN Indiana Jones and the Majora's Mask xD
Indiana Jones and the Penis Hat of Doom
Indiana Jones in south park
When KotCS first came out I hated it. After years of researching the subjects of ancient civilizations and quantum physics, my eyes have been opened. Maybe not to the feasibility of those ideas as non-fiction, but to the potential for interesting stories within fiction. If you've never given much serious research to these fields (or all you know is History channel nonsense) then you just won't get the point of KotCS. I watched KotCS a few months ago after years of not seeing it and I loved it (except for a few scenes... vine-swinging Shia, etc.). I gave that movie way too much grief. It's actually really captivating/fascinating, and dare I say: ahead of its time. George took a lot of grief for prequels (some deserving and some not so deserving), but that does not mean he deserved grief for every project he worked on after the prequels.
George is really just a kid with ideas, but no idea if they are good or not. He really needs people to reel him in a lot.
And the guy just should not be in charge of naming things. Movies, characters; he just can’t do it.
@@razzledazzle84921 No one complained when he named Greedo Greedo in the first Star Wars movie.
@@jedijones Pretty sure some Jewish people did.
@@razzledazzle84921 You're thinking of Watto.
What's frustrating is that parts of Indy 4 are actually good. The Yale chase scene is vintage Indiana Jones, everything up until perhaps the nuked fridge is fun, Harrison Ford is clearly having a blast throughout and that would normally be enough to carry the movie, but Indy is both sidelined at the climax and saddled with a plot where he just follows John Hurt rather than take a proactive role. But overall, the story takes a big downturn after Marion shows up and never recovers.
maybe but its not that bad as some say
For me it’s mostly really fun until the last 20 minutes with the alien stuff but it’s mostly a fun action serial action and adventure that the series is known for.
I liked the movie overall honestly
So it all was George Lucas fault!
Is that surprising?
Well It's too late now!
Crystal Skull is actually great fun to watch!
Agreed
0:13 "... riding off into the sunset because that brought the curtain down." Old Steven needs to listen to young Steven.
they should just have ported Fate of Atlantis's storyline as it is. PERFECT Indiana Jones movie
Or the Emperor's tomb.
You are right! But then, it would be a spoiler since many people played the game.
***** But many people played the Fate of atlantis, right?
Tom Portengen
Sorry I had not seen your previous message. My reply was to the guy who posted the Fate of Atlantis. I have not played the Empreror's Tomb and can not say. But if it was just as good as FoA then why not!
*****
it was a good game, but FOA is legendary quality!
First, Steven clearly says it was Harrison the first one to start this over again. And second, Geroge Lucas it's been a MASSIVE INFLUENCE in many aspects of movie making, more than people is aware of (non-lineal editing, digital cinema, sound quality, visual effects...) No matter how many nonsense he's done during the last part of his career. His achievements deserve all the respect for me. WE HAVE DIGITAL CAMERAS thanks to him. He started to talk about digital cinema back in the 80's.

I REALLY love the music at 4:05 has the ominous yet beautiful Star Wars vibe that John Williams can easily portray very well! Anyone know the name of the theme of it?
That is the ending portion of Marion Ravenwood's theme, used as the credits music for both Raiders of the Lost Ark and this film, though the latter uses a remixed version of the Raiders' March in the end. It plays at around 7:28 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/XTlXPMqXTEI/v-deo.html
@@ZardaffronTK Thanks! I completely forgot about this comment I posted a while back. LOL And 20 seconds into that video link that you posted and it immediately sounds like Star Wars and something close to the "Across the Stars" theme! Love the similar vibes of all of John William's music are! So good!
There's no Indiana Jones without Steven Spielberg!
I still don't get all the hate for this movie.
***** Yes it was
No. See, BAD is something like The Room. This, was OK.
Why? The acting was fine, the story was ok, sure there was some CG but it doesn't use any more CG then most other movies. The film was ok.
IF that was the case they would of made a movie like cat woman.
+Litshttam If that was the case then no one would like any of the first three movies.
"Indiana Jones and the son of Indiana Jones" was a great title!
And Kathleem Kennedy refused to leave well enough alone, which is why we are getting a fifth film without Spielberg and Lucas.🙄
This feels like a living legend(Steven) fighting a fallen hero(George) having a war trying to make a complete a movie.
For a 4th movie in the franchise, I thought Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was remarkably good. It had everything you wanted in a Indy movie.
Actually no....the movie wasnt funny at all, only lame ass moments that "tried" to make you laugh, it had all these incredible stupid scenes like Shia LaBeouf with monkeys (like Shia LaBeouf wasnt terrible addition enough), overall the whole script was terrible with lame-ass ending of aliens from another dimension.
In my list it goes to the one of the most disappointing movies made, one that should have NOT been made (really wish Spielberg had stick with that decision), for me it as lame as 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie was and I can only hope that atleast the upcoming Star Wars movies will be better than either of these disappointing movies.
Balnazzardi I agree with most of the points here, however I for one quite like Shia and thought he did an all right job, but yeah his character needed work for sure( like you mentioned with the script). Harrison once again did an amazing job as Indiana (Obviously) and I could just about handle the story... right up until they brought aliens into it, I mean if they had like hinted at aliens or something it wouldn't have been as bad, but to actually show the aliens and make them try to kill for no apparent reason was bull shit. im not a die hard Indy fan, but aliens DO NOT belong in these films, like at all...
The car falling onto the tree to safely plop them in the water and the swinging on the vines scene also just made me think....Really?!?!... Did that actually just happen? >.>
Balnazzardi Absolutly,…the mistery plot is revealed from the start sequence…it betray the supernatural characteristics of the "object" right from the begining…and destroy the classic tension in the INdiana jones squeme that were: is the objet only an ancient myth or is it actually a mistical superpowered relic?….my theory is that the skull start to make sounds and domain antzs and do mistical things,…because they hadnt really good ideas to put in the film. Is like the ufo the tarzan thing etc ,..they puted it because they lost absolutly the conection with what an Indy film musted to be. For example what about the start finshing adventure of every begining in the Indy films. Where is it in this fourth istalment?..(btw sorry my english)
Beanybob95
Just to clear up one plot point: the one alien we see at the film's end did not intentionally kill anyone. Spalko was given a single wish for returning the final skull, and her request was to "know everything". She didn't expect the alien to translate that literally, so the overload of mental information killed her.
Moviefan2k4 But in his magnificent superior intelligence the Alien must know that that will kill her so, here is the fact that this as many other details in the plot are bad writed poorly thinked and skematicly planned
I agree with you 100%. MOST criticism i heard was based on how unreal the film was due to aliens and the infamous "nuke the fridge" scene, as if jumping out of an airplane on a raft or ripping a still beating heart out of a dudes chest is realistic. Obviously it's not as good as Raiders or crusade but it's still a decent installment to the franchise.Same thing with spider-man 3 and the dark knight rises, people just like to nitpick the shit out of films that are not as bad as some make out.
Nice try.
The fridge takes the cake put both libtards in a box and ship them to Cuba
Lucas literally works best in that he in the 70s & 80s had hired talent to challenge him. Total collaboration. He had the 3 k's that made esb a great film kurtz kirshner & kasdan. His wife marcia who won the oscar for editing on star wars also challenged george. With the prequels he had only yes men around him. Theirs a documentary on the phantom menace that really shows Georges flaws. Kurtz said himself " the problem is geirge doesnt have people around him that challenge his ideas. Just one thing to pick out was Jake lloyd was not the better choice as young anakin. Their was another actor who was much better at acting. Lloyd flubbed his lines alot was not a good child actor & the other auditioning people said lloyd will slow down production while the other boy would not. George of course got the final say.
‘The Fridge is the key to all this’
-George Lucas, 2008
Actually it was Spelberg's idea. He wanted to realise it even in Back to the future.
I don't think the problem was the idea of making another Indy film, the problem was the thematic, the style of the movie itself...but making more Indy films is a good idea. There are some characters (in movies, in literature...) that can live dozens of adventures, and with good ideas and good mediums those stories can be made. Some would be good, some bad, but the character of Indy is good and solid enough to create a ton of new adventures for him. If only Ford was younger...
I get the feeling that lucas is a brilliant idea man with a vivid imagination who needs other people to convert those ideas into audience-friendly mediums....with the right screen writer (and no shia swinging in the trees) paired with the right director, the actual concept of "ancient astronauts" wouldn't have been half bad...let george think, let others execute
Exactly. I would say Lucas is good if not genius at making up a narrative but not necessarily at writing the dialogue that makes the narrative go along its path.
"Repress artistic vision, that's how you make great movies"
Actually, that's how you make audience-friendly drivel. Let a great artist like Lucas realize his vision, even if some are put-off by it. By the way, you do know that this "terrible director and writer" is a two time oscar nominee for directing and writing, right?
Probably why The Clone Wars TV series was so much more well received than the Prequels
Yeh
So what your saying is Stephen is a kind of Rumpelstiltskin Character and his job is to turn all the shite coming out of George's mouth into gold. Jesus that's some ask!
Clone Wars was really good. It was like the Old Trilogy
So basically George is that drunk friend who shows up at your house and tries to talk you into duct taping yourself fireworks and setting them off inside the garage because it would just be so funny
I always loved the movie. A lot of amazing scenes.
And yet he's still going to direct a fifth Indy-Film.
+Schwatvogel Money money money
+Bahoma - 246 The only way he could end it on a high note would be to kill off Indy's Wife and Son. Perhaps ILM can make Harrison Ford look young enough for a prequel?
+Schwatvogel George Lucas isn't involved. Spielberg knows he can just do what he wants now without the weird creepy kid hanging about
+Rigsby 1 Brutal, but true.
James Mangold.
How to get a movie made, by George Lucas:
> Have a terrible idea for a movie
> Nag your friend for years so he'll direct it
> Change names around untill he reluctantly agrees
> Get it "on the right track"
> Have your best friend make himself do it
> Laugh all the way to the bank
You can't complain much about George Lucas, he has good ideas, time doesn't go well with him.
George's ideas are usually phenomenal. He's just not the best at portraying them. The Star Wars Prequels had fantastic ideas behind them
Did George Lucas made something that wasnt Star Wars or Indiana Jones?
John Carter No, he's talking about the newer films, dumbass!
The Star Wars prequels are great. George Lucas is a very talented filmmaker.
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have been friends together, since they were executive producer of The Land Before Time in 1988
I love how Spielberg is most of the time doing his signature thing.
Wearing a (often blue-colored) cap.

O.C.TileGuy Thank you for reminding me how much I dislike The Lost World.
negro bsr Yeah, well, that‘s just, like, your opinion, man.
that is another one Spielberg’s worst movies, hah and both this and Lost World are written by the same person; David Koepp
Steven, it's cool, we love you. George... We need to have a conversation
The G show games and movies I think we can let a bad movie slip, even the occasional Super 8 or War of the Worlds is fine by me after the original Indiana movies, Close Encounters, ET, Warhorse, Jurassic Park. Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Goonies, Poltergeist, Schindler's List, some don't like it but I love AI... I personally don't mind letting this one slip.
Should have called it Indiana Jones and the MgGuffin.
He also directed War of the Worlds. 3 alien movies.
Raiders of the Lost Ark had a magical ark, The Last Crusade had a grail that heals people, and The Temple of Doom had a witch doctor that can remove a live beating heart with his bare hands. NOW people have a problem with Indiana Jones 4 being too silly? I think Aliens are every bit as plausible as the plots from the original trilogy. So many people just jumped on this bandwagon of hating Indiana Jones 4, for a reason that could be easily placed on the original 3 movies.
***** My point was that Aliens are no more ridiculous than the 'magic' that was present in the first three films. It all comes down to personal opinion, and I found the 4th film to be a really entertaining addition to the franchise.
Ben Russell
Granted, but Indiana Jones movies pay homage to old action/adventure film reals. They are have a certain formula, and for the Indy movies, it is "The Mcguffen is supernatural and religious". The sci-fi bend throws people for a loop because it totally breaks the formula of the Indy movies.
Basically the movie failed because people cant adapt to change and accept new ideas, instead sticking to traditions.
Kyle Rhulain You make a valid point about the formula changing. If people said they disliked the movie because Lucas "changed the formula," then I would understand. However, when people say they hate the movie because "aliens are ridiculous," that's when I get pretty annoyed. You get where I'm coming from, right?
Ben Russell
I do. But I thought about it one day and realized that what they are really upset by is the formula change as many of the people who say that to me love sci-fi stories.
ya and as cinamassacre pointed out that's what people thing the skulls are
I like this movie. Guess I'm the only one.
+Nico Suave No, me too. It was great fun.
I enjoyed it. Probably my least favorite of the series but I still think it was great fun.

Oh yeah, absolutely... "Know thy enemy" Sun Tzu rule might turn into a total whipping fest... So it seemed in Temple of Ni.
George is the same guy who wanted to do a whole movie of Indiana Jones in a haunted house.
clownnookie I’d watch that.
@@atlasmonkeyleon yeah it was going to be about a haunted castle in Scotland. I definitely would be down for that. Maybe it would be best if it were just a key aspect to the movie but not where all of the action took place. In any case I think it'd be a cool setting for one of Indiana Jones' adventures.
Fun fact
empire strikes back and return of the jedi are both considered as the best movies by most people (fans)
and what to do they both have in common? you may wonder
BOTH of them didn't have George fucking Lucas directing them or had him being the only writer (the other writers kept his madness in check)
and as for Empire strikes back (it had two other writers that made sure it was properly made while George was just in charge of making parts of what he wanted the story to be about) Ultimately he had less control which ended up in being a good result
For return of the jedi however he made sure that he got a more leading role as a writer but he was still not in the director seat (thank fuck for that or it would have gone to shit) obviously he wanted to be in charge to get his stupid ideas across that were most likely getting shot down earlier but he did get something he wanted to come true.
and that is the start of with a race that came from Winnie the pooh (Ewoks) This is when you could start to see the beginning of his lack of intelligence. Yes return of the jedi wasn't shit because Ewoks was in it, it actually was ok still... sort of... most likely because he still wasn't the director
Phantom menace came and is considered as THE WORST Star Wars movie of them all by most people. What happened you might wonder? What changed? ohh look
Director: George Lucas
Writer: George Lucas
and down the road of shit we went
Having Disney buying the franchise was in my opinion without a doubt the best thing that could have happened.
So long as it's not in the hands of a fucking idiot who had a fluke of luck
The best star wars stories/ books / material overall has all been from other writers (Drew Karpyshyn especially) im so glad
that people with actual skill in writing managed to keep the franchise alive long enough for it to get taken away by Disney
ohh and YEAH I know this was a Star Wars rant but hey everything that went to shit with the prequels was just as much George's fault like it was with this horrible piece of crap Indiana Jones movie
+MrKartuzia Nah Star wars is better than Jedi.
+Lee Mcqueen Rumor has it that Star Wars (aka Episode IV, the first one that was made) ended up being written mostly by no other than Lucas's wife. Apparently a lot of rewriting took place after George's first draft attempts. Officially only George is given a mention in he closing credits, though...
David Ferré Wouldn't surprise me.
+MrKartuzia That's wrong. Many people hate ewoks with a passion and like A New Hope over Jedi.
I thought the movie was fine, the idea was very interesting, the cgi and the fight choreography was the weak points of the movie imo.
