George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are two of the best. In their field. Things seem to be happening. The way they say it is. George and Steven. To good buddies. I think the world of both of them.

Damn, George is spot on with his predictions here. They were already in motion, but post covid its getting even closer to his prediction

      Very much so.
People have made a lot of videos about how it feels like there aren’t as many “mid-budget” film releases, and how streaming series feel highly serialized these days and like watching an 8-10 hour movie.
Well I think it could be argued that when streaming took off in the mid to late 2010’s, ideas that could have been greenlit by studios as mid-budget films started to become greenlit as season long streaming shows that are incredibly serialized, and perhaps that might not have had the best plan to continue should they succeed and the streamer want to renew them.
I recommend the videos on Netflix by the UA-camr Captain Midnight to describe that criticism of streaming series if you want a more thorough explanation.
Streaming changed a lot about the entertainment industry, and I don’t know if George Lucas realized just how spot on what he said in this interview in 2013 would prove to be one day.
Also, when Spielberg mentioned that there would be a lot of mega budget film flops, he summed up 2023 in 2013 perfectly.

    George predicts everything.

What George Lucas essentially argues here is that theaters would prioritize major franchise films, with everything that isn’t that caliber of box office attraction migrating to cable television or streaming.
And in some ways, ten years later he was right.

      One other thing:
I think it could be argued that some streaming programs that have seasons that have been described as a ten hour movie could have been envisioned as mid budget films but greenlit by studios as seasons of streaming programs.
      What do you think?

They are right, except that instead of saying "television" they mean streaming!

Streaming was just becoming mainstream in 2013 when this aired, and has arguably gradually overtook linear television (broadcast and cable alike) over the past half decade.
Even if there are some good programs on linear television, they end up on streaming shortly after being broadcast on television, and there are arguably very few unique experiences on linear television left aside from live news and sporting events.

@@fortynights1513 Streaming was already mainstream then. Netflix's Starz deal in 2008 made that a reality. By 2010 streaming viewership was outpacing satellite/cable with the exception of sports holdouts. Don't forget Apple's huge misstep in 2007 that created Hulu.
