Screaming Jay Hawkins - its over the top, almost theatrical. Once you've listened to it a few times the other versions seem just so tame. It's also the the way that sax harmonises with the keyboards.
Screaming Jay Hawkins original is a work of sheer genius in all its voodoo slapstick glory. And Nina Simone's version is haunting an beautiful. But CCR's version is by far the most intense and dark and hypnotizing and powerful and will always be my favorite.

I tried to do his version at a jam once and I passed out in the big finish. Never going to try that again. Screaming Jay, this one's yours!

Marilyn Manson always makes something very special out of his covers, I really like this. But the best version for me was Creedence Clearwater Revivals’ version but the Sonique one wasn’t bad either, somehow I liked it.

I think it's bias for me to say CCR's version is the best but that's because it's the first version I ever heard since the early 70s. It became my fave. CCR song. I never even knew it wasn't their song until about 7 or 8 years ago! I think most of the versions are good but somehow CCR's - with Forgerty's voice and simple straight forward Blues-Rock arrangement just makes it the most catching. Btw, just my opinion.

Then, last year (I think), when I watched videos with interesting facts, I stumbled upon the one which talked about the origins of heavy metal music and the death growl. Screamin' Jay's version (original) was mentioned as the earliest major influence. Then, I was blown away once again. Truly a fascinating tune and how versatile it's used.
