NASCAR Legend Richard Petty is reunited with his Plymouth Belvedere GTX on the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb
The sturdy foundations of Goodwood House are set to be tested by an American invasion of NASCAR horsepower at this year's Festival of Speed.
'The King' of NASCAR Richard Petty is shipping over from his Museum one of the cars that earned him that nickname -- a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere, which also helped to make famous the fearsome 'Race Hemi' V8 engine.

Richard is such a friendly, likable guy...
monsterZERO Richard Petty, more than anyone else -- including the France's -- made NASCAR the popular sport it is today. Petty has probably signed more autographs than any driver in history and that paid off with loyal fans. Of course, 200 wins didn't hurt either. Richard Petty truly is the KING of NASCAR and will be for all time.
with the all of those dots at the end it really sounds like you are being sarcastic to somebody who has never heard of him
...
If i had fake teeth as good as his id be smiling all day aswell.
monsterZERO Why the ellipsis? That makes it look like sarcasm.
@@isuzuslider190 those are his real teeth my man. His dental hygiene has always been on point. Check vids and pics from the 60s
27 wins in 1967. 10 in a row!
D Tittle1964 -That’s crazy if you think about it. Even more nuts, 2 years latter he would leave for a year and drive a Ford! Plymouth got him back with The Superbird!
Undoubtedly the most dominant car in nascar history 👍🏆
Gordon Won 9 Races in The Latter Half of 1998
Now that's a car that brings back memories. I was just a 13 year old kid reading about NASCAR in the newspaper in 1967. I never figured I'd ever see it in person or even on TV. Then I found out they raced in Richmond. I attended my first race in 1971 at the old Fairgrounds Speedway. Richard Petty won that race as he did several others I attended over the years.
One of the times when I wished I could hit the like button more than once. Petty, and his battles with Pearson in the late 60'and through the 70's turned me into a car guy and a lifelong Motorsports fan. Without him I would have never discovered F1, Indycar, LeMans, drag racing, CanAam and even sports cars and karting. They always say never meet you heroes, but I first meet Richard when I was 24, 26 long years ago and he was an absolute gentleman in person. Nice clip. Thanks.
Richard Petty is definitely a living legend. Makes you proud to be from the Carolinas........ racing is definitely in our blood.
The GTX, I believe, was the cream of the crop of the Plymouth Belvederes. Back when the now defunct Plymouth brand sponsored Richard, he couldn't have chosen a more elegant, yet beastly machine for a stock car.
I met him when I was 13 years old at the Hickory, NC dirt track. He was very nice to a shy little kid.
I watched his incredible 27 win season on Wide World of Sports, long before Nascar had a network deal. This was the car that made "It's got a Hemi" the slogan we have today. My favorite #43 of all time. I even bought a '66 Belvedere because of this car. Detroit always said, race on Sunday, sell on Monday.
That Plymouth is just as gorgeous now, as it was in 66'...pure Detroit muscle, not a computer chip anywhere in sight!
My dad had a 4-door with a slant 6. Reliable dad car.
+WhIke Turner Nice! I use to have a Dodge Dart Swinger with a slant 6 in it...you just couldn't kill those engines-incredibly durable!
roberto abrams My dad was a tool designer for Pratt & Whitney. He went over the parts of engines in all our Detroit iron with me with ease. Tech/mechanics are in my family. And we had great cars.
+WhIke Turner Wow, sure sounds like you guys had great cars! I miss the vehicles from those days. Ppl today talk about how many liters an engine is or how much HP it has, but its all about foot lbs of torque that really tells how powerful a car is built! My sisters new Chevy is really nothing more than a motorized computer, and I kinda laugh at it lol!
roberto abrams We had a 1964 Impala wagon, 1966 Fairlane, 50s Nomad, 1961 Belair and many more in the extended family. I'm the youngest of 17 kids. There were awesome cars all over the place. My family seemed to own everything at one time or another.
This is my childhood. I saw this car race at Daytona in '66, I was 4yrs old. I don't think anyone has signed more autographs than King Richard.
He was is and will always be THE KING OF NASCAR RICHARD LEE PETTY!!!!!
That's so cool the The King brought the hemi to Goodwood. I wished he could have opened the throttle for the fans. It's been a tough year from him after losing his wife. I'm glad he's still smiling.
Me too!
The King has a way of just putting a huge smile on your face
God bless you Mr Petty & you're family. I love watching you all race. You all are American heroes!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for all you have done. .............. Getter done!!!!!
Gotta love the sound of a pre-1973 American Big-Block over ANY other motor ever produced, IDGAF what anyone says, nothin compares to em...
Branon Fontaine I'd argue a 32 valve 4.6l Ford modular V8 with a X-pipe exhaust is probably the best sounding American engine ever.
Skunkdog Gro crown Vic spec. My Tundra has a Toyota 4.7 V8 and it sounds like a cop car even after custom exhaust I love it
Perry Taylor crown Vic had single cams and 2 valves per cylinder, the 2004 cobra engine isthe one I'm talking about, dual cams and quad valves makes a big difference in sound.
The fuck are the replies on about that’s like saying the 427 ford big block is the best sounding motor in the world and saying “yeah but them hyundai 2.0s tho”
426 will always be the king.
To Johnny Boone. I met Richard Petty at Lee Usa Speedway about 30 years ago The man is like you said a true gentleman. A lady wanted to take his picture but was holding a baby & having trouble. He reached out & took the baby & held it in his arms so she could get the picture
Yeah, were those some good times in NASCAR racing. It really brings back those memories. It's hard to believe 45 years went by so quickly.
I wasn't alive when petty raced, but man it sent shivers up my back hearing that hemi scream! Yikes, look out. Taking us back to a time when racing was real racing!
Just listening to the king puts a smile on my face
Every Belvedere should look and sound like this.
Mr. Mopar and a true southern gentleman, Richard is great. Independent >direct connection
I saw him race at Riverside in 1974. I was only four, but I remember it like yesterday.
Historic car. Class man. You don't beat that. You simply DO NOT.
The sound of that hemi...so special.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is OUR version of Michael Schumacher. True legend. He did it better than anyone!
Actually more like Aryton Senna
@@DixytheGoat9 Earnhardt is more like Senna.
Petty had much more class
All those years... and it still sounds healthy and strong.
One of the best drivers in the world !
My first race live in person was the spring race at Bristol, 1974. I was six and I watched the beautiful STP 43 car dominate and win. I couldn't take my eyes off that car!
Richard is great and that GTX is awesome!
King Richard is a treasure!
Beautiful car! He probably was cruising around in first gear the whole time. I’m sure the car still had a super speedway gear left in it. It would have been difficult to romp down on it.
I got my first speeding ticket when I was 16 years old heading over to Richard's place in Pine Level by North Carolina highway patrolman using newfangled radar on me I was heading up there to pick up a pressure plate and dual point Hemi distributor for my 70 Hemi Charger that his brother was holding for me, those are some of the greatest guys you'll ever meet
MillionD
Legends never Die
43 the famous race number in the world
He's a racing legend, no doubt there.
Long live the King!!!
A Southern Gentleman.
I had fond childhood memories of Petty. Then I seen one photo that has blemished my image of Petty every since. It was a photo of Petty racing a 50's convertable in a 50's Daytona on the sand track. Petty's head was more than a forehead above the windshield.
I met him, his wife & Kyle when i was a boy he is still the great man that he is.
I used to sit in the pine trees s at Hickory Speedway and watch Lee & Richard run the dirt track!
The sound of a big block v8 is anathema to the environmental movement.
Good. Long live excess, hedonism and prosperity.
That car is a thing of beauty.
Nascar is about tight competition, accuracy, patient, consistency. Many people don't take into account on it.
Cheers from Indonesia
I used to work at an aluminum welding facility in Faro, N.C. - I'd commonly stop into the local greasy spoon diner to have breakfast or dinner (that's what the locals may refer to lunch). Richard Petty was there at the counter right next to me a few times. Larger than life. Just a regular one o' the boys don't cut it for this fella - he carries himself a bit bigger than that while remaining more down-to-earth than those around him. Don't rightly know why he's frequent such a dive, so far from his "home-town"...but that's just who he is, it seems. Other places got much better BBQ, better chicken in a biscuit, better coffee. They's just good folk...maybe that's what kept him coming back.
He rocks
those days were great , even as a ford fan love this car.
Yep, this Ford man right here loves this Mopar too :-)
The one and only King. There will never be another like him.
So cool, he hadn't driven that car in 50 years!!
Now that's a race car.
There's people who are called legends, and then there's Richard Petty end of story!!!!
I would love to talk to Richard Petty off the record. He seems like a really smart dude holding back a lot of opinions
when I was a lad this Man and Evel Knievil were my Hero's, I'd build ramp's and jump over kid's layin lined up, My mom bought hand painted wallpaper with Petty going round a corner leading a pack of car's....
The King is back in the UK!!!
King Richard the 7th.
60's race teams literally got a street version of their car of choice and gutted out the interior and reinforced it into a race car.Even using stock blocks, heads and other components. Those great days are surely missed. The 66/7 gtx is my favorite race car of all time,it still looked like the street version when raced.
Manu14Smoke I went to the Southern 500 in 1971 while the big blocks were in use, they rumbled and caused the ground to shake a little. They made a deep roar, not a high pitch sound like today"s NASCAR"S.
Harold Plemons
How lucking you are to have seen those monsters !!
If I understood correctly, the King said that the car came straight from a museum where it stayed for 30 years ?
I was wondering : can you do that with a fucking Toyota Prius ??
I really apologize for my english cause it is not my mother tongue
Manu14Smoke The days of big block V8 engine is gone forever, but it was great while it lasted.
Harold Plemons There are bigger big block engines now than ever before. Anything less than 500 cubes is considered small. Sonny Leonard makes custom race engines over 1000 cubic inches.
firstbaldwin Yes,I am aware of the Mountain Motors. The days of the large car companies big blocks are long gone however. Those huge engines really sound great when they are on the strip.
The King
THE KING. and PLYMOUTH. THEY GO TOGETHER LIKE SALT 🧂 PEPPER 🌶
America, does in fact have a King.
I've met Richard 4 times
Great for Richard Petty's grandchildren; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Beautiful car!
Love that Hemi ROAR
THE fuckin KING..a damn champ!
It's so cool seeing him with no cowboy hat or sunglasses in the open face helmet while he's driving.
That big 426 Hemi sound through straight pipes is music...made in USA.
The king.
I am a dodge charger fan because of the king
+Charger Dave same here Dave... needless to say my first car was a Charger (a well-kept '74 SE with less than 30k on it). Color?? BLUE of course, slightly darker than king Ritchud's car... Sadly, after an 8 year battle tryin' to keep it rust-free, i had to let it go
And i'm a big fan of superbird because of the king
Going Sunday. Hoping to sim him there, met him last time he was at the Festival of Speed.
The UK is a little Nascar ignorant but I think most petrol heads here know who Petty is! Nascar gets a bad deal here in the UK, many don't get it. The typical comment is 'whats the point in driving around in circles' ! Those that make that comment just don't realise how demanding it is to run at continuous high speed for hundreds of laps, both for the car and the driver. Or how difficult it is to build a race winning car form apparently simple rules. It's one of my ambitions to attend a couple of big Nascar events in the US some day. I just wish it could have been back in Petty's hey day!
***** yah, nobody running a super speedway oval at nascar speeds is getting bored, or worried that the scenery is not changing enough.
Like a Grand Prix, the start is the best part.
turboslag I'm 15 from the UK and trying to explain how exciting and hard NASCAR is so hard.
Nascar doesn't just race in ovals. They have a few circuits they run on too they are really fun to watch
Lets not forget the importance of the slip stream..If you get out of that, and start trailing behind, you can just forget it. But if you catch that slipstream at the right place and the right time, the term slingshot comes to mind.
Perfect commuter car. Set your pants on fire every stoplight!
We need this car in GT6! Heck, we need a bunch of the old NASCAR race cars in GT6...
Richard Petty is The King Welders
I love that petty blue
Reunited? He brought it!
I honestly don't think those people understood what they were witnessing.
🤘I grew up with cars like this..... 🔥MOPAR or no car🔥🤘
I like this 'cause my first car was a '67 belvedere.
roger b So was mine, though not a GTX. The biggest motor you could get with the regular Belvedere was a 383 4-barrel, which is what I had. It was still darn fast. Actually, I can't recall if mine was a 67 or 68 anymore. I got it in 1975 for $300.
+roger b Mine too. I still have it, but it doesn't have the 318 in it anymore. I put a 440 in it, and made it a totally different vehicle to drive! NOW IT'S FUN!!
+roger b My second car was a 66 Belvedere. It had the 383 with the Carter 4 barrel. It was red with a black top, black interior. Being a Minnesota car it had rust issues and probably had 50 pounds of bondo on it, but it would crack 100 mph with no effort. I miss that car. I hope to get another some day, though the 800 bucks I paid for it back in 1986 is not a realistic price, ha ha.
Mine was sitting up for about 3 years, the front end was smashed up except for the hood,it had the 318,me and friend fixed it up and I drive it from Birmingham,al. to tuscon Arizona(1600 miles) when I was in Us Air Force,i do miss it.
I sold mine because the motor mounts were bad and when you gave the car too much throttle, the motor would twist from the torque and the fan would shred the radiator. I just didn't want to mess with it and bought a 1973 Cougar to replace it. Later I went to an enduro race which is a race of 100 laps around a dirt track at my local fairgrounds. Lo and behold there was my old Belvedere. It didn't last long in the race as the motor blew up early. It ended up in the scrap heap for sure. A shame.
What a true man of the real Nascar Era, he just raced I know it bound the panties of the Nascar world when he was the first too be abducted into the Nascar hall of fame cause everybody thought it shoulda been Earnhardt too bad sooo sad for them hails too the true King 🤣🤣🤣😉👍😎
I hear chief's hands on that motor still
like riding a *BYE CYCLE*
He’s called “The King” for a reason…….
If the king is heathy enough to do it they need to let him have 1 more chance to win a trophy on Daytona 500 maybe win a piston cup
Just joy riding in his 67 HEMI Plymouth, he still beats Donica's time. Also that is a time when you could tell a Plymouth from a Dodge, Ford, Mercury, Pontiac, or Chevy. Those were when men were men, and women were women, watching!! Now it is billboards and whiners!!
I wonder what that car would bring at auction? Would it top the Gto Ferrari at 34.5 mil? So much history in this car, I believe it would top that.
Sounds sweet.
Looks slightly like the Australian VH Pacer Valiant
When Nascar was worth watching.
what! a Belvedere GTX! its supposed to be a Superbird god dammit!
Too bad the couldn't record it doing a Hot lap.
What did the vintage race cars use for a fuel pump? What it mechanical or electric?
That was back in my days as a young guy when I really liked nascar...the cars were actually very much "Stock Cars" (obviously highly modified) not this B.S. Car of Tomorrow (whatever the F that means) that they run now where every car is exactly the same....back in the day it was about the cars, now it's about the drivers like it is the wwe or something.
Detroit manufacturers would ship stripped body only cars to the teams. They would build the frame/rollbar, put some sheet metal covers over the door handle holes and headlight holes and metal straps to hold the front and rear windows, and go racing.
Each engine is built by a different manufacturer and each manufacturer has a different aerokit
8 years later and the gen 7 cars kinda look like street cars from the front.
Wonder if Richard wears that cowboy hat to bed? 🤣👍
Is the car next to Plymouth is a Galaxie 500, right? Started the engine of that car too?
Ricardo Kakazu I don't know if they started it (I assume they did), but that is a Galaxy that was driven by Fred Lorenzen. Can't tell for sure, but it looks like a 1965.
All jokes aside, I wonder how it felt turning right. or left. or both.
I am just curious as to how this car avoided Jay Leno's Garage all these years...
Christopher Valdés Because Jay can’t own everything.
This is why I want to move to the no BS south...
Where could I find a lowering suspension kit like this?
"Where could I find a lowering suspension kit like this?"
Petty Enterprises
Is he going to race that against Danica Patrick?
he would still win
I know
ha
Has he ever taken off that hat and glasses?. Strange dude really
So, richard, why dont u do a few hot laps & give Bubba a break ??? .... hello...
