@silverbird58 - I was told that the advantage Elliot had was the soft cylinder head material developed by Ernie , Bill's brother, which allowed a higher compression ratio. Everyone thought Bill must be cheating after winning so many races, but it was all legal!
@kingduckford the reason for OHC is because of displacement regulations in many countries, forcing them to make more power with less displacement. For the record, I'm using my wife's account. I had the privilege of growing up in Charlotte, NC during the 60's and 70's and with my NASCAR fan dad. My dad took us on 4 "camping trips" a year to the infields of Charlotte Motor Speedway and North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham to watch the races from a platform built on the top of an old IH Metro van. I got to see 6 races with the winged cars (2 in October 1969 with the Charger Daytonas and 4 in 1970 with the Superbirds and Daytonas). They were definitely sights and sounds I will never forget. I watch NASCAR today and long for the days when the cars were actually stock and the drivers had personalities.
Imagine going down the highway. And then hearing that car haulin up the ramp and roaring past you like you are sitting still. Oh, what a site it would be.
Oh my god! What a beautiful sound that baby makes. I love how he just takes it out onto the road. Needless to say, not a policeman around who would pull that car over for driving without tags. It would be like asking Chuck Yeager for his flight clearance. ;) Cheers from Tokyo. Goodwood, here we come (though we'll miss the Superbird).

That is a beast out on the side roads! Excellent driving, Larry...and a talk with Richard Petty...that will put a smile on every Mopar fan's face! Awesome!
In any other state, a SWAT team would be called called out. In that town, it's just the King going for a spin around the block. I saw this car race at Daytona when I was 8yrs old, it looked like a spaceship. In those days Petty would lap the entire field, they were so much faster than everyone else. Even without the Superbird. Petty had so much more money and much better cars than most of the other teams. Bill France couldn't ban this car fast enough.
Guys say how much NASCAR is banning innovative ideas, but I also see this in your normal car dealerships. You see cars like the Supra, S2000, Skyline, Challenger, Cuda and how those were innovative in performance ... these days everything is so mudded down because of emissions laws, hybrids, electrics ... bleh
A new Challenger with a 392 inch Hemi is faster than any muscle car made in the 60's, 70's, or the 80's. Without the Hellcat, that's in another realm altogether. We are driving the fastest muscle cars in history, and the performance is still increasing. I give the big 3 a lot of credit.
Do it a Daytona 2017.(but better make sure there's only enough fuel to make it around the track 1 time or Richard may not start the race but run in it.)
Possibly the only man who ever lived that could make a cheesy 'stache, cowboy hat, and shades, actually look damned cool. Lol. Seem to recall something decades ago about the shades hiding burn scars? The keen wrench eye noting such things as the holes where door trim was removed .. the golden age of NASCAR when there was still a whole lot of stock in stock car. Can't even be bothered to watch any more. :( (When) I play the lottery occasionally .. always a 43 in there.
Now that's when NASCAR was about building fast cars with no computers and few sponsors! (Money) Mechanical ingenuity at its finest; and remember, this car is geared to go 200mph with a four speed so low end acceleration wasn't its strong point.
It seemed to be jerking a little bit when he was following the red firetruck looking vehicle with the camera crew, perhaps the car wanted to rocket off!
That noise. That beautiful noise. Hearing the symphony of pure volumetric efficiency. That unmistakable sound of a MOPAR Hemi. There’s no other V8 on earth that sounds quite like it.
Do you want his legacy to continue to live with the current generation of kids or not? If he werent in Disney Pixar cars, kids would already be saying "who?" when his name was mentioned...

Fred Garvin Nascar bans everything talk about blocking innovation
Guys say how much NASCAR is banning innovative ideas, but I also see this in your normal car dealerships. You see cars like the Supra, S2000, Skyline, Challenger, Cuda and how those were innovative in performance ... these days everything is so mudded down because of emissions laws, hybrids, electrics ... bleh
A new Challenger with a 392 inch Hemi is faster than any muscle car made in the 60's, 70's, or the 80's. Without the Hellcat, that's in another realm altogether. We are driving the fastest muscle cars in history, and the performance is still increasing. I give the big 3 a lot of credit.
who gives a single shit about muscle cars??
@@AdolfHitler-xp1nx ....you are on the wrong side of youtube then, Adolph
That idle. "GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO LET'S GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO"
They should have Richard Petty drive that as the car that that starts the race off one time! that would be cool!
Do it a Daytona 2017.(but better make sure there's only enough fuel to make it around the track 1 time or Richard may not start the race but run in it.)
Warren Chambers that would be fucking awesome
Warren Chambers and that would be bad because?
cool to see richard drive that as a pace car for a nascar race.
Dmk Dmk agreed!!!! Petty should drive the opening part of the a NASCAR race with this as the pace car
Man when started that hemi up. It's like waking up up a damn killer. The sound of that engine
The king strip weather's the role was just completely based off his voice actor, Richard Petty!
Sweet Jesus that is one HELL of an exhaust note.
I've never heard something so terrifying and Beautiful.
Truly breathtaking! As the astute reporter said, the sound, the smell, what an experience. Thanks for the video ride!
facts man the reporter was very on point. this car has a presence.
To have the privilege to ride in that Superbird is true happiness.
My favorite Richard Petty car
Who else thinks Plymouth made the Superbird to get Petty back from Ford?
Chris Pappas you’re on the money, that’s literally the reason Plymouth made it
Petty has said in interviews that is what happened....
@silverbird58 , 428 side oilers either . . .Oh my !
That was what they wanted
Look up an article entitled Wings of a White Dodge.
(When) I play the lottery occasionally .. always a 43 in there.
I can't imagine driving down the road in NC and #43 pulls out in front of me. They call that "best day ever".
A joy to listen to, very finely turned engine! Exciting power.😮
That had a beautiful sound
American thunder!
I NEED that car for my morning commute!
Now that's when NASCAR was about building fast cars with no computers and few sponsors! (Money) Mechanical ingenuity at its finest; and remember, this car is geared to go 200mph with a four speed so low end acceleration wasn't its strong point.
Chuck Gura makes sense. I was wondering how he had it cruising at like 30 mph without it jerking.
It seemed to be jerking a little bit when he was following the red firetruck looking vehicle with the camera crew, perhaps the car wanted to rocket off!
SwaffyX makes sense! 600 hp cannot be driven so calmly
Those times were Nascar's bests, but then they came in 2000 and made crap, like when the Pontiac Grand Prix was added.
New NASCAR's are still incredibly basic.
that car idles at 100 mph Richard had it right on, thank you all please continue, just, love them cars and times wow, never for get them.
That noise. That beautiful noise. Hearing the symphony of pure volumetric efficiency. That unmistakable sound of a MOPAR Hemi. There’s no other V8 on earth that sounds quite like it.
Description - "the star of Disney Pixar's Cars"
Bitch please. The King and his car was a star years before Cars was even dreamt of
Do you want his legacy to continue to live with the current generation of kids or not? If he werent in Disney Pixar cars, kids would already be saying "who?" when his name was mentioned...
The dinoco car! :P
Yeah! :D
+Francoberry yep
Francoberry the king!!
CHACHIGA
joseph lemus my 🅱️igga
Nothing like the sound of a Mopar starter. Love it! Beautiful piece of history. And an engineering masterpiece.
THANK YOU RICHARD AND LARRY FOR SHARING YOUR RACE CARS WITH ALL OF US HERE THAT LOVE YOU LOVE THE CAR AND THE KING THAT DROVE REAL CARS UNLIKE TODAY'S RACING
The sound of a full on race Hemi -- awesome!!!!
I couldn't wait to hear that thing come to life
Thank you, Mr. Petty, and thanks to Larry and the camera crew. I wish my step-dad was alive to have seen this.
THAT´S AWESOME!!! Like Richard Hammond said: "Gotta do lots of steering to keep heading straight forward." I can´t believe it has got only 4 gears+reverse. These cars are awesome. Dodge charger Daytona too.
Vít Salava o
Priceless would be the right word.
We could give similar compliments to the 1969 Ford Torino Talladega with the 429 Boss engine, too.
It aint about how many gears its about rear end gears
Could you imagine if this thing ever went up for auction. It's the king of the birds and Daytonas.
Words cannot express how amazing this video was, wow.
That is the most evil sound I have ever heard.
silverbird58 torque doesn't make that noise, cam lope does, don't speak on a subject you don't understand please, misinformation is bad and something that's been around for over 40 years shouldn't have misinformation at all.
Only if you are in the race car next to it on the track. To Chrysler fans that is pure heaven in our ears.
HAHAHA oh really most evil SOUND? You should hear me fart after taco bell ahahhaha
Man... King of the Mopars, I love it! Wish I could feature it on my channel ;)
Holy crap! Eargasm!!!!
only the sound of a Merlin in full song and this thing makes me moist and lights a fire inside me.
I can’t even imagine the sound level at say Darlington during the start with a racetrack filled with such cars! Richard is a national treasure. I cant imagine the prices his cars will command on the day they finally cross the auction block.
What an utter treat. Lovely people, wonderful car. Perfect.
This is Heaven , Mopar Heaven .
I want that car as a daily driver....
And a fuel tank trailer hooked to it
You'll be deaf in a month
After me !!!.........
That's about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Richard Petty is awesome! I grew up watching him on ABC Wide World of Sports in stock car racing in the 70s. Great time to be a kid.
Im so glad I watched that. Have been in love with that car since I saw it race in 1970 on TV.
The best audio on youtube. period. & the metal eye candy/art is tops, as well. Jeepers..must be what the Normandy Invasion sounded like.
Best Music I've heard in a long time!!!
So cool - Petty and the Superbird
6:52 That ride would send any bucket list into instant retirement.
Everytime I see the Plymouth, I just think of The King from Cars 1 and 3. I absolutely love how much that Character is Richard Petty in animation form.
symphonic old-school HEMI music...beautiful
When that engine started, a symphony of demons was unleashed, Satan danced a jig and angels wept.
Robert Ueberfeldt
Fueled by the fumes of hells sewer's and lubricated by Satan's piss.
The unholy creation of God and Lucifer.
Probably more truth to that than you know .
Excellent! Love those ole Plymouth & Dodge Wing Cars!
