Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is the latest PlayStation game to arrive to PC via Steam and The Epic Game Store! PC is my preferred way to play games these days and Rift Apart was one of my favorite games from 2021! So What are my thoughts on the new version? Do you need an SSD to play the game? Well, watch and find out!

This game is litterally the only reason I ever wanted a PS5. I guess that's out the window, now, as long as my computer has an SSD it seems. I can't wait to try it.
Same Here!!!🤣
Same lol I almost bought a ps5 just before they announced it
Bought the game and play on a ShadowPC. Not as perfect as on PS5, but this saves me buyi g a PS5 so i am totally fine
@@skibot9974 Spiderman 2 is coming to PC in 2024.
@@V3ntilatorwhere does it say this
Yeah honestly them doing things like porting the older Ratchet (and by extension its 'companion' series like Jak and Sly Cooper) games to Steam (via a collection or individual releases that can be bought as bundles for a discounted price) would be nice. Jim Ryan had that infamous statement of "people not being interested in older games" (which he got a TON of backlash for and for good reason), dunno if that mindset still exists at the company.
@@exoo-2801 Huh, didn't know it was that specific. Thought he was making a blanket statement, that's my bad.
@@exoo-2801 wow I didn’t know that so basically that infamous statement it was about the new gt game man sometimes the Internet need to do the research first and saying something
I'd say it _is_ in effect to a degree, however. The Playstation Classics brought up on the PS+ service, plus independent buyables, has had scant few titles added to it, meaning Sony isn't all that interested currently in actually trying to revive or port over their PS3/P/Vita library of even the large number of PS1 games.
I would give my left nut for deadlocked
Rift Apart is my first Ratchet and Clank game. I would love a collection of the older games on PC
There goes my only reason for wanting a PS5. Been loving this game on PC so far. Only issue is that it's been crashing here and there.
VII….
spiderman 2 isnt worth a ps5?? you missin out
@@slushie6269 i can wait for the PC release or a PS5 price drop/PS5 Pro release.
@@slushie6269 honestly now adays there are SO MANY GAMES. specially if you own a pc. they are dirt cheap. humble bundles get you 300 bucks in games that are pretty damn good for 20 bucks. like capcom bundles that have all DMC and all RE games. i have so many games on pc that i can't justify a purchase of a console. also if i'm patient they come eventually. and if they don't. emulators get them then. consoles are good for people that hate to have to build the pc or tinker with it if something breaks. otherwise pc is best. it's cheapest in the long run too since it normally lasts through 2-3 generations depending what you spend.
@@aionis562 i know that pc is best, as i have one too. I just love my PlayStation 4 & 5 alot too. I dont want to have to wait years for games to come to pc. If you have a pc there isnt any reason to buy an xbox tho. The xbox is just an underpowered pc
i gotta say i appreciate that you just figured out how to run the game on your card instead of trashing it after overblowing your vram limits. pulling down texture size is a great call on an older card and it still looked pretty good for what it is.
RaC: a Crack in Time on the ps3 had time portals that would instantly load a completely different version of the level and didn't need no SSD. Whilst Rift Apart uses the in-between area before loading the new one.
Yet no one made a big deal out that and yet it was faster and equally as impressive. On the PS3!
They did the same things with Portal, Prey, Dishonored 2 and Titanfall 2. The former two games were on the ps3 and Xbox 360
That's not the same thing, what rift apart is doing is essentially loading a whole world (in some cases) in real time. Granted this is a gimmick that Sony used as a selling point for their console claiming they had some unseen tech when in reality it is just an NVME SSD that had been a thing way before the PS5 came out. I mean yeah to a casual player who knows nothing about computers it probably looks super impressive, to the rest of the world however it was just an obvious marketing strategy.
Even though I didn't exactly grow up with PlayStation. I was very familiar with the Ratchet & Clank series.
Neighbors family members and a few friends shared stories about their time with certain games over the years and I grew to understand the series fairly well even before I played it for the first time.
As time went on I finally had the money to get invested in PlayStation and fell in love with the series. It's good that they're bringing them over to PC so that way the franchise can get more love and hopefully get more games in the future... that being said I still think it sounds like a flat-out meme. "Ratchet & Clank, available on steam!"
Just thinking about it reminds me of: "Super Mario on PS4! WWWAAAHHHOOOOO!"
It's great that Insomniac Games is trying to reach out and give this franchise more exposure but it just feels so uncanny to me. It being in existence is like a walking meme no matter how I see it lol.
But as uncanny as it is I'm glad it's a thing regardless. And I hope one day PC players can have access to the older titles as well. Hope you all have fun with the game and new appreciation for the series!
Despite the bugs in the game for PC, it's still a relatively successful port from PS5 to PC, and probably the least buggy game that came out on PC with so many triple A PC titles releasing with a plethora of bugs. Not only that, the only issue with Rift Apart on PC is its general optimization with SSDs and the millions of combinations of hardware configs, even then they still tried their best to cover a wide variety of hardware. Which is justifiable in books. Not like the others who barely bothered to optimize the game. (No hate to the devs of other games, it's probably just their deadline needing to be met.)
Like many others the comment section. This game has been the only reason why I want to buy a PS5. It's a game that's truly next gen, utilizing not only the latest graphical advancements like ray tracing but the full utilisation of an NVMe SSD. 6 months later, it's now relatively optimized and it's still a fun game.
I still laugh at the people who claimed that the NVME or fast SSD is not needed and that the PS5 excuse was a scam. And nope.. every loading bit is extremely important.
Hey there, J. I know this is not related to the video AT ALL, but... I just wanted to say that I recently watched/listened to your entire "Sonic the Hedgehog is Distinctive" playlist, and I gotta say... coming from a Sonic fan whose first game was Sonic Colors, I gotta say you gave me an interesting look on the entire franchise, even games I never played before. You did an amazing job breaking down each of the games and even bringing in your own personal experiences with these games. Coming from a fellow Sonic fan, I appreciate all the work you've done on those videos and I can't wait to eventually see your thoughts on future Sonic games going forward, especially Sonic Superstars! Keep up the amazing work, J!
I got a PS5. This was one of the first games I bought for it. If you have a PS5, get it there. If not and you got a strong enough PC go for it.
I see consoles as gaming rigs where you trade access to some games for performance and access to others games you wold not have access to. Most people can't afford to build a PC that strong but can afford a PS4/5, what ever the current Xbox is, and/or a Nintendo Switch.
The issue is consoles are getting up there in price. Eventually its gonna just be more affordable to have a gaming pc. Might cost more, but its a long term save. It also opens the door to the player customizing and having control customizing their pc.
@@godfrey4461 Nah, game systems are still 500 bucks tops, with a pc I have to hope my sh1t doesn blue screen or components dont burn up on me, game systems are still the better deal.
@@gangstagummybear3432 My PS5 was $600. Good Gaming PCs can range from $500 for a bass model, to $5,000 for a high end one.
@@generalzeta7000
For $500 you're not getting a pc as close to the ps5 specs and performance. get real man. To get a good performance pc you need minimum $1500. PS5 is still the best option for that budget.
@@NiceOneKarenGaming I didn't say as good at the PS5. I said a good gaming PC. PS5 is powerful, but you don't need to be near that powerful to be a good gaming PC.
1:51 for your settings you mentioned you turned OFF upscaling. I don't understand why you would want to do that considering your older hardware you could have used AMD FSR at quality mode, which would downscaled the game to around 1080p then back up to 1440p and you would have gotten a significant boost to performance with that alone especially since you said you were running a lot of other settings at medium.
i tested the game in an RX 570 and dynamic resolution have better results in performance than using FSR dynamic 60
Thank you Jay! Always appreciate your reviews! 😄
you strengthen the number of people playin your games, but you weaken your console's attractivity if you put every exclusive day one on pc. Also the work that needs to happen for a pc port takes a LOT of time
The game also works well on steam deck at 30 fps! So im very impressed with the quality of this port
Most (if not many) games ran on 30 fps without issues. ^^
As someone's whose never owned a PS but has always had very good PC hardware this is absolutely phenomenal for me. I'll finally be able to play a full RC game without emulator. So happy.
With emulators and this porting the only one missing on pc is the 2016 remake, so we are not losing so much
@@Maku98_ Maybe emulators have got better over the years but when I tried to emulate RC 1 and 2 many years ago it was a stutter and glitch fest.
@@favna what cpu do you have?
This game again shows why Insomniac games are top of class when it comes to Video Game Development.
I hope Sly Cooper will have a official port one day.
sadly that is unlikely
While of course this game makes perfect use of SSD speeds on both PC and PS5, it could also have a fallback on PC where it would just use more system RAM to load alot of the assets that you access through a rift up front.
Or make this an option for users with alot of system RAM.
I am not a user who needs this, but it would be fun to play around with. You can imagine loading the entire game into the RAM on some configurations, effectively causing even faster loading times than ever seen.
Bringing ps3 ps4 games on steam would be soo great. Like littlebigplanet, pupetter, sly trilogy... So many hidden gems, sometimes the emulators are tricky and too ressource hungry
media molecule abandoned all hope for LBP series sadly
@@FerdinandMarcosBussy ports would be neat tho :-( imagine LBP 1 and 2 with online mode on PC !!
Puppeteer is the most underrated PS3 game.
It had very great visuals, plots, designs and narration. ^^
PS3 games are not even on PS4 yet though. So PC would probably be later
PS5 doesn’t just have an SSD, it has a very fast NVME SSD. That is what you need for the best experience on PC.
Slow on ps5 actually, and pcs in general pretty much already have that particular ssd installed unless you picked up a 500$ garbage.
You can't rely entirely on a fast SSD if the rest of the hardware can't keep up anyway.
Secondly, it's only relevant in specific scenario's where fast loading is required, which often isn't the case.
@@celphalonred1999 Because Intel was stuck on Gen 3 for so long, many PC's out there are likely stuck with Gen NVME speeds. Which would still be a lot better than an old spinning HDD... but still perceptibly slower than the PS5 experience.
@@oropher1234 you must be talking about pc with the rest of the hardware not being able to keep up
@@gangstagummybear3432 Sure, sore loser.
If you used external HDD, then the most of slowdown was due to it being external, not due to it being HDD.
External drives aren't meant for regular real time use, like internal ones. They're meant for storage and data transfer.
USB interface is nowhere near as fast as SATA, so judging load times based on external drive is not representative in the slightest.
Yeah man, do that Rift Apart Review ASAP. I haven't played the game yet myself, but I can tell right off the bat that it's an A-class game to play, probably even an S-class (considering you explained a few things the game is capable of in the PS5). But I really want to hear your review on this game man. I'm still watching all of your "Sonic the Hedgehog is Distinctive" playlist videos. I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS on the franchises that I love playing. So yeah J, do your best to bring out that Rift Apart Review, I'm actually very interested to know what you think of Rivet and how she's different from Ratchet in your perspective. GOOD LUCK MAN.
I just ordered new parts to refurbish my PC and storage was the biggest place of improvement. Getting 2 M.2 SSDs so hopefully when I play this it'll be buttery smooth c:
If it's anything like Horizon's PC port, I'll be ready to play this one with a slightly longer load time.
I lve been playing ratchet and clank since the original and im so happy this is on PC. It looked great on my 6800xt and ryzen 7600x
I'd say your hard drive was nearly a waste case scenario as it's an external hard drive. Those are usually 2.5 inch drives which are already slower, 5400rpm which is also slow, and now has to go through the USB protocol. Still, you basically always use an SSD today and M.2 NVME will always be far faster than the old sata bricks.
Still hard drives are basically dead on PC today. I know I couldn't even run the Yuzu emulator on my decently fast hard drive last time I tried. It just caused constant freezes and the game losing sync.
Great video. I really want to get a ps5 later this year.
Same, but probably not this year, hopefully one day
OP didn't show his build. What is your hardware? You missed an essential part to share
So excited to play this game, but waiting on PC patches. Day 1 reviews claim many crashes. Maybe it’ll be optimized in a week?
I had zero crashes, but there are some glitches i experienced.
1. Textures can sometimes randomly flip to a lower quality. If you set them lower and then higher they seem to return to working order.
2. You can only use SSAO on levels with water bodies; as for some reason any other AO method causes the water to flicker.
cool....glad to more people to now get a chance to experience this great series of games....NOW where is the damn bloodborne pc port.
On an external hard drive? Oof, I bet that was a slideshow. Maybe not even, slide shows actually have some frames per second still. I saw John Linneman tweet a video of the game on a hard drive that would better be measured in seconds per frame.
Good point at the end. I havent put too much tought into this but im supirsed that the big console devs like sony microsoft havent invested some time and rescoures into maiking pc releases of their older titles. Like sly, Ratchet, Gears of war etc. (i guess micorsoft is a little better than sony at the moment) Its as you said it would give these old titles new life and see if they still have the audience for possible newer games in their respective franchises. Older games dosent undermine their newer more flashier releases, and hasent more or less gamepad controllers gotten conisderably more mainstream for pc users since the Ps4 and xobox one controllers popped up? A possible big challenge would be converting them and porting them over to pc and that the cost would outweigh the profit. And in my eyes if they really want to do it right, They cant just be rushed out the door, they need considerable time and care and probabley more importantly dedicated studios that work on these retor titles and the maiking a quality port.
now that we got rift apart i really want to see mods thats are remakes of old levels or even something like the project unleashed thats remakes just for games like nexus or tools of destruction.
The dual sense's adaptive triggers are amusing, almost curious how well they'd work in other games on PC. The speaker being used for some little sound effects is kind of pointless, or... well actually low quality really, don't know why they thought it would be a novel feature when sound quality is its own entire industry. It sounds almost like an old gameboy. Game is otherwise quite fun.
I could've said this defeats a reason to buy a PS5 back then, but then my dad and I bought a PS5 along with 3 games and controller at a discount and price drop. And also I'm starting to realize I'm not much of a PC gamer. My habits of hoarding a 100+ Google Chrome tabs and leaving Adobe programs on doesn't really mesh well with Gaming.
If I want the PC version of any game it's for the possibilities of modding. I haven't seen much, but I know it's already happening.
I love that game it’s really awesome and tons of fun
You did this game a disservice with the short review. What happened to the same care you put towards the other videos in the Ratchet & Clank series? & also you forgot Tools of Destruction.
2 years later & im still waiting for the full Rift Apart review

game is good
Did you see that they released tmnt 2003 complete series on dvd are you gonna get it
The game is also steam deck verified so if you have a steam deck then definitely give this a shot
Why did you not review the ps3 ans ps4 ratchet and clank games that are the main base games instead of side ones
“I’ll get to it at some point.” Can’t wait for the review in two years!

I heard of LG Ultragear but what the hell is an LG Ultrafine?
Can you do a retrospective on the SpongeBob Games?
What does the space on your ssd have to do with speed? At 4:27 you say there is not much space on your ssd and so the ps5 is faster. If you think that space on ssd plays a role in the speed that’s your misunderstanding of how SSDs work..
Oof, 1440p? With that gpu you need to bump it down to 1080p until you upgrade
I think your cpu should be fine for a few more years, but definitely upgrade the video card
Recommend for 1440p:
6700 XT
3070 ti
6800 XT
Especially if you look on the used market
I would say newer like a 4070 ti, but those bois are still expensive
Yoo i have the exact same specs as you on my laptop😁 thats fire
I played 40% of the game on my buddies ps5 before he moved out and took it away. I was pretty bummed out that i couldnt finish the game but ofc i didnt want to buy a ps5 just to play this. now its on pc all my problem are gone. very sweet.
I honestly can't wait for the skin mods
God i hope Rift Apart in pc bring new fans to the series without bothering with the ps2 games.

Anything above medium hair is a waste. There is no visual difference.
Same for shadows the visual difference from medium to high and even ultra is very subtle.
How’re you going to show your parts and completely forget your GPU
i'm not a fan of platformers. but i will say this whole tech thing is fascinating. i wanted ot know if sony was still BSing and turns out they were with ff16. games done like this need quick load times. it might even tax the cpu once again. because for awhile cpus didn't need to be upgraded just the gpu. i'm curious if this taxes the pcs cpu now? i could buy it and return it on steam and fuck with it for like a hour. but i don't like doing that. it's cool to know nothing needs to be exclusive though and the pc community is a good place to get more sales for sony.
16 isnt a ps5 exclusive, so they werent bsing
@@gangstagummybear3432 huh? Sony paid for it. And it's not on anything else. It's exclusive. Least for the time being. Also yoshi p said it's only possible due to the ssd and PS5 architecture. But he did say that after it was leaked it would be coming to PC. Then they had to backtrack. Based off that info it sounds like bs to me. I could be wrong but I dunno. Trust in people that spout puffery is lost on me anymore.
*External HDD* no matter how fast it is, it will not compare to a good internal HDD.
Bro if you're gonna show your specs it's probably a good idea to show your GPU, the most important component when it comes to gaming lmao.
what about the rest of the games?
I'll play this on my steam deck or onexplayer one day.
I wouldve set the resolution to 1080p just so i could get better textures.

I'm beginning to see less of a reason for the this gen consoles. In fact I see less reason to buy triple A games. This is a really weird time for gaming. Its Almost 3 years in and close to zero games to support the consoles or say its next gen. I bought a PS5 off of someone and I don't see a reason to play on it over a ps4 in terms of games.
PSA don't pixelize bosses 😂 it will crash lmao even on good hardware

bring the original trilogy upto date please i know they re did the first one but honesty scrap that shit and just do a crash/spyro trilogy treatment to the original ps2 titles and release them on ps5 and pc
I am interested now that Sony brings most of their games to PC since I refuse to buy a PS4 or PS5.

First to comment. Thanks for the video Jay
PC users so far aren't buying the this port making me very sad.
Give it some time. It was just barely released.
It's been released for a day
PC gamers were burned by The Last of Us part 1, so they're waiting for technical reviews of the PC port (the review codes came in late for many reviewers) or a sale.

Mannnnnnnn ripp I need a new processor I cant run this :( ratchet and clank is so nostalgic to me. One of the most underrated shooter games ever.
Haha u have same pc specs as mee even if it's old games runing fine and r&c got patches.. so it run like 60 fps on hogh setting and this is fine for me im not in new game i just play old ones with emulator like ratchet a clank 1,2,3 or jak 2,3 sometimes Assasin's creed series like origin,valhalla.. or horizon.. and the gpu still hold good.. i think gtx1660ti is enough for gaming but developers of games are not optimizing games bcs they want u to buy better gpu so nvdia get's money 😂
You must be using a SATA SSD, right? Cuz that was not as fast as a PS5 in those rifts... But with a PCI-e m.2 SSD, indeed it runs basicallyyyy like a PS5, it is maybe a split second slower, nothing major, feels smooth. HDDs are terrible for this, and 2.5" SATA SSDs are just "kinda OK, but not as good as PS5 at all".
Who plays game on a hdd?ssd is cheap.go get it.even sata will do
and even that game has some issues and even a 4090 with an i9 12900 or something like that isn't capable to run it smoothly and no this dosn't make the PS5 more powerfull than those PC specs its just that ports in generall this days has been poor and prop their main focus is consoles but as we can see from the PS and Xbox side they can't get any more consumers than the ones they already have so they have to go to the PC side however if u are gonna make crappy ports ppls won't touch your games let alone buying a PS/Xbox
It doesnt make ps5 more powerful than those pc specs, its just that pc cant handle the architecture of ps5 yet, not even with nixxes dumbing the game down.
Some platforms can handle a game pretty greatly.
A game can be handled on console while it wouldn't work on PC and vice-versa.
Best gameplay in the series, 2nd weakest story.
It's a fun game, but it's hard to enjoy a story that's written for 8 year olds. I replayed the first game and it's incredible how much better the story is in that

Like always the pc version is better than the ps4.5 white binder version* out of thousand of games, they're always better on pc, out of thousands, only one game was shit at launch in comparison, and that was Tlou due to the incompetence of Irom Galaxy.
