How to remove IHS from PS3 CELL CPU and RSX GPU

  • Used to remove CELL IHS - Feeler gauge purchased on ebay. Rounded off edges and sanded down the end using dremel very thin to get under IHS
    Used to remove RSX IHS - Heatgun set to 1050 degrees farenheit for about 30-45 seconds. Don't recommend over 60 seconds. Then used a thin butter knife to pop it off with a clip from a business card under the knife to protect the BGA. Then used a razor to clean the RAM blocks on the RSX and same for both IHS. But on the CELL to clean off the residue i recommend a small ended blade like the one in the video otherwise you can scratch it. The RAM blocks can also very cleaned be finished using sand paper.
    I personally choose not to use glue when putting back the IHS, simply because in case you need to rework again its not a pain to remove and so there isnt more stress on BGA. Also because when put back together carefully it doesnt move.
    I also make sure to use a board support when doing this
    I do not take credit for this though, through forums and threads ive found many great people sharing their knowledge, im simply making an easy video to help others.

    Repaired successfully! I used on the cpu (Cell BE) a "Oil Knife Spatula N°1" (the smallest); now the console doesn't suffer anymore of overheating and auto-shutdown, it's like new! THANKS YOU!

      @@kwabenakwabena7716 take courage, heat the surface of the chip with a hairdryer and enter delicately with the spatula, remaining along the edges. Remove the old thermal paste with alcohol and put a new high viscosity thermal paste on the chip (I used MX-2), reassemble the heatsink making sure that the metal plate remains on the chip. If the shutdown problem isn't solved the Nec tokin capacitors could be exhausted.

    Jay W. - Your heating up the IHS mainly, once it gets to about 120F is when i pop it off. I measure this with IR thermometer. This isn't anywhere close to melting the solder, which is the point where you SHOULD NOT move the board.

      @@kojomensah8036 It is scary. If you are too scared don't do it. I just cleaned all surfaces afterwards and used MX4 sparingly on both sides of the heatspreaders. It was hard to keep the spreaders in place while connecting the heatsink. Theory is the YLOD is overheat and not solder! Like a PC CPU fan not working. This is a dangerous repair and may not work. I had nothing to lose and have fixed 2 this way.

      @Jjoonn Are you talking about the surround glue? The silicone glue needs to be cut as close to the heat spreader. None of the deliding needs heat. In fact I doubt heat does anything. These aren't put together with heat glue. Some people just get used to using hair dryers to remove phone screens etc. This isn't my video and isn't the only source that I watched. 1 guy used a razor blade. Be careful not to cut deeper than the 3mm glue wall.

    I'm going to attempt this soon. I'm thinking I might try a razor blade to partially cut into the epoxy of the corners of the RSX to weaken it before heating with a powerful hairdryer for a little while. Then pop it off. It was scary the force applied here that sent the knife out of control. That's ripe for accidentally smashing components off the board. CPU looks fairly easy, probably oil knife/painting knife and slide it around slowly. I might leave the glue on the board around the CPU for fear of scratching it, but clean whatever is left on the IHS itself. It should sit low enough to get good contact with the die. I will probably glue both down again, but likely with very small droplets of gel superglue or some such and only on the corners. It'll stay put then for reassembly but be easy enough to slide off again later if needed. I might go with conductonaut metal for the dies, and then standard paste e.g Gelid GC extreme/kryonaut on top of the IHS. Whatever I find lying about. I feel the conductonaut is ok since the IHS should be glued down, but if I wimp out of that and think I'll short something I have enough non conductive silicone paste to do both. I'll inspect the board first and figure out my risk factor....

    • @podgemcgrath
      @podgemcgrath 8 років тому +4

      To glue the lid back you need to use thermal adhesive around the edge of the cell processor and on the 4 RAM chips of the RSX GPU. Use regular thermal paste on the centre chips.

    • @jd5787
      @jd5787 7 років тому +3

    • @podgemcgrath
      @podgemcgrath 7 років тому +1

      flying frenchman Absoloutley not, do not remove the heat spreaders unless you have thermal adhesive. The adhesive keeps the heat spreaders from sliding off the GPU/CPU. If you don't have thermal adhesive just replace the thermal paste on top of the heat spreader after you've reflowed it and see how it works for you.

    • @robertvuitton
      @robertvuitton 7 років тому

      Hey paddy, do you know the name of the tool at 4:51? By the way, I've seen someone putting the heat spreaders back (with thermal paste holding on into the cover metal side) without thermal adhesive. What thermal would you recommend though?

    • @podgemcgrath
      @podgemcgrath 7 років тому +1

      Don't know the name of it but any razor blade or flat knife would do the same job.

      I recommend Arctic Silver thermal adhesive.

    • @worrier
      @worrier 3 роки тому +1

      It may be somehow beneficial in theory. But it the case of the ps3 I don't believe the die would be able to reach the heatsync without the help of the heat spreader. Plus I think chip dies are pretty fragile so it being able to distribute heat through the spreader and be protected is probably for the best. Then again Im no professional and have no clue what I'm talking about so take it with a grain of salt! Good question!

      If you don’t even have the proper tools to replace the RSX such as an IR rework station (minimum of $500), a soldering station, a CPU jig with stencil for the RSX, flux and of course new solder beads - you’ll never get it done. You will also need to source BRAND NEW RSX GPU and you’ll mostly find them on Alibaba or Aliexpress and buy them from China. Some you can buy them per item, some you have to buy the entire lot of like 10 or 100 RSXs.
      Unless you want to invest all the money for the proper tools and parts and want to at least make some money out of it, don’t try it.
      I spent over $1000 just getting such tools and parts to reflow a few of my personal PS3’s. They were all the fully backwards compatible 60GB CECHA-01 model so they are precious to me.
      Now that they all work and have been cleaned and tested to work 100% without overheating and now loud fan noise, i boxed them all up in their original boxes (except one) and sealed them up in Saran Wrap and then put them in a vacuum bag. They are now in a plastic box in my closet.

      Using someone else's hacks on an Xbox doesn't make you any less of a noob when it comes to something unrelated as removing an ihs
      If your careful it can be removed without damage heat it up to about 120 and use very thin fishing line to saw the old thermal adhesive should wiggle out after that

      +David wieczkowski when i meant about xbox hack i mean board hack like soldering some wire to the board which my point to show is that the video you can see is not as easy as it look but still very useful for expert people .

      N Noni Ah I get you
      Also figured out the easiest way to remove the dam thermal epoxy is.....spray on flux remover used it and it just giggled out of place after letting it soften with flux remover for about an hour

      To replace the thermal paste.

    • @N00B283
      @N00B283 7 років тому

      Because the thermal paste beneath the heat spreaders degrades over time, a manufacturing failure made by sony, that could only have revealed itself over time. Of course, now they build them without the heat spreaders, saves money and increases cooling efficiency.

    Does anyone do reballing for the ram chip to replace it with more ram, ps3 ram only 256mb they could easily upgrade now with much more

  • @bluej511

    Thank god i dont let you guys rebuild my ps3 haha. You should never ever use a razor blade to scrap off thermal paste on the vrm or on the die. You are introducing scratches that the thermal paste has to fill in afterwords. Why not just use alcohol or a thermal paste cleaning solution as those wont etch your die and vrm.

      That white stuff on the vram isn't paste, it's EPOXY. you HAVE to scrape it off, just wiping it with IPA will do NOTHING.

    • @boydsterling3193

      bluej511 on the die, no, never, but the RAM chips have epoxy on them like the guy above said, which you will never ever get off with alcohol or thermal paste solution

    Is it possible to replace the cpu on a ps3 with a better one? Like a duo core?

      Why do you say of course not?

    • @CitarNosis317
      @CitarNosis317 9 років тому

      Because consoles have a system too, like your PC, or phone. That system knows what it is supposed to run on. So even if the PCB/mainboard used a socket, that allowed you to replace the CPU - it would still not work. The only thing you can replace is the HDD/SSD in consoles. (But the PS3/Xbox360 for example would need more ram, instead of SSDs.)

      Okay so they both have systems... Where are they different? Why can i replace a cpu on a computer with a different cpu but not on a console?

    • @CitarNosis317
      @CitarNosis317 9 років тому

      Addendum: Sony since then killed this Linux/Cluster possibility on the PS3 with an update. Why? No one knows.
      Even with the latest firmware - you can crack a Playstation 3 so it can run an FTP server, run cracked games and such.
      So, I don't know.
      Oh, and the latest generation of consoles - Xbox One and PS4 both use a generic x86 cheapo AMD CPU/GPU (APU) unit.
      They are also weak / offer no extra features like the Cell did.
      The only thing they have now is the "bare metal API" which basically let's developers push out some more frames per second.
      But this is on the way for OSX/iOS/Windows too (DX12/Mantle).
      So yeah, now a new console is basically a pre-packaged PC with a custom OS and locked down set of hardware. (i.e.: you cannot upgrade components)
