PS3 CPU de-lid and liquid metal on both CPU and RSX

- I'm getting a lot of comments, some I have had to delete as they are misinformed.
The liquid metal goes on the die and the underside of the heat spreader, the die has no aluminium in it, and neither does the heat spreader as its plated copper. Now, the heat sink is made from aluminium, so that's why on top of the copper plated heat spreader, we put MX4 thermal paste because this makes contact with the heatsink, which is aluminium.
So the CPU and GPU die have no aluminium.
The heat spreader is made from plated copper, NOT aluminium. So this has no aluminium in it, and this is all the liquid metal makes contact with.
So the conclusion is that it's perfectly safe and drops the consoles temperatures considerably.

I used twice cheaper and apparently twice as efficient liquid metal from China called LT-100. I've had over 30 hours of testing. The highest temperature I have recorded while playing every Crysis game. Speed fan always set to 28%.
RSX - 69 degrees Celsius for a short while, then drop to a practically permanent 68 degrees Celsius.
Cell - the highest I recorded when emulating PS2 games was 60 degrees Celsius. In over 30 hours of testing, I never once saw 70 degrees Celsius on the RSX. Testing time is approximately an hour of playing each of the tested games.

That's an L revision with a 65nm RSX and I believe a 65nm CPU, so those temps are to be expected on this revision

It's hard to judge since no one in the network has the cooling permanently set to 28%.
28% dawg just put that thing At 40% and the temps would be crazy good. The point is to keep it as cool as possible. At 40% you’d be hitting 60 max maybe.
So how is this better than artic silver? Also, in the GPU area, wouldn't it be advantageous to put some thermal pads on the chips on each corner?
It's much better than AS5. I have run tests and the liquid metal wins hands down. Make no mistake about it, liquid metal is the best thermal compound you can use on your PS3. Unfortunately putting thermal pads on the RSX ram chips would create a gap between the RSX die and the heat sink. This would lead to overheating of the RSX so not a good idea it's a good thought it just doesn't work
Did you remove the power supply top case for better cooling, is that damaging ps3 in any way and what liquid metal is that brand? Model? And when putting ihs did you leave that yellow tape on procesor
No, I don't remove the power supply, you can see this in the video,.it goes back in the case. No.its not damaging to the.PS3 in.any way. I use Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal. I do leave the yellow tape as it stops the liquid metal from leaking onto the MB

Use Webman, in the fan settings, set max temp to 65 and min fan speed to 33

The actual issue is called bumpgate. there's solder inside the chips inside the TG seal that breaks because the TG gets soft at 70C and allows the GPU to bend and break those connections
Thankfully, we now have Syscon error codes that we can now extract from the system control chip. This console actually had a 3004 error. This means the NEC tokins were severely damaged. I used RIP Felix tantalisers on the top side of the motherboard, replacing 4 tokins in total. This completely resolved the bad tokin issue, and the console is running great 👍

Tim, do you not apply conformal coating near the components of the RSx and the VRam Nands?
Also what about it seeping out on to the mobo? How do you seal it?

It's unlikely you will get a flip chip or BGA defect if you use webmans dynamic fan control to keep the console under 65 degrees. Liquid metal helps to achieve this, so by running webmans fan control and using liquid metal on the die, consoke will last years

In order to remove the heat sink on the CPU, try "fishing line" and floss your way through the silicon seal instead.
Tony359 did exactly that as he believed this would be the safest method. He damaged a trace, so he tried my method and got a successful de-lid. I wouldn't recommend fishing wire. It's to risky
I did that with nylon thread. It is VERY tedious and yeah, there is risk to damage traces, through in my case only solder mask was sawed off.
Do you reapply LM after a few weeks? I've heard it's good practice due the alloying of the contact parts essentially absorbing the LM.
What I do is create a mist coat of LM. What this does is your rubbing in some LM lnto the surface. This creates a barrier and the LM doesn't absorb into the surface.

There should be a better lid. A pure copper polished lid if your going that far. That improves Temps in newer cpus
The IHS is made from plated copper.. I would need to look into whether remo ing the plating would help.
I think polishing is bad idea as copper absorbs liquid metal
Nice results but doesn’t seem to be worth the risk. I was getting 58/61 at max of 62 in a delid over clock with Cooler Master Cryofuze and Thermalright Extreme Odyssey 2 pads
@ZombieWindex I now use double sided heat tape around the die to trap any LM. I have been doing this for 2 years with no issues
So it means that it is not important to make a Frankie PS3 with 40nm mod , all we need is to de-lid a BC PS3 and do a liquid metal application ?
It's important to use dynamic fan control to keep the console below 65 degrees. In theory, by doing this, you shouldn't get a flip chip or BGA issue. Every console I have sold with LM and webmabs dynamic fan control has not had any issues
Liquid metal thermal paste also known as gallium and aluminum don't mix. A year later how is it doing?

@Pvt.Joker64 you don't hear the fan once you turn the sound up of the game. Serious gamers wear headphones anyway. If you ran it on syscon, it would reach 32 percent over 30 mins anyway. The difference is that if you let it do that, the temps would be in the 70's. Running ot at 32 percent from the outset keeps the console under 65 degrees, avoiding flip chip and BGA defects.
How do I clean it Once I open it ??
I wash the plastic case with soap and water and let it dry. The inside i would use a soft brush to dust the console, and the motherboard I use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton wool bub to clean the board and the chips.

@thisisagtv yes, you clean the CPU and RSX die with isopropyl alcohol. However, de-lidding the CPU is not easy so be careful

I now use double sided heat tape to create a barrier that prevents the liquid metal from spilling onto the motherboard. You see me use this on the RSX on three sides, I now apply the tape to all four sides of the RSX and I also use the tape on the CPU around the die to stop any spillage

Those are de ent temps, normally its the early phat models that you need to worry about. The ones with the 90nm RSX, these need to be maintained well otherwise the RSX could fail

It's you! I have applied less and found the temps to high do. I had to open the console and apply more! So this is the right amount for PS3

Yes, it will just run a little warmer, that's all. Because these consoles have a 90nm RSX graphics chip, it can suffer from thermal stress. So, by reducing the temps so the system runs as cool as possible and reduces the risk of this. This is known as a flip chip error. The underfill of the RSX die starts to get softer and causes the die to lose contact with the chip. This creates a system error known as the YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death). So by applying liquid metal to the die keeps the console as cool as humanly possible. Reducing the temps by just one degree could make a difference in my tests. In some cases, liquid metal reduces the temps by 10 degrees. This potentially would add years of additional life to your console.
How much would just a delid cost ? I dont want the case changed to white
Any console I get, I first have to check it has travelled well, and there are no flip chip errors due to knocks in the post. So after 1 hour of TLOU, I am happy it has none of these errors. I then dump the syscon error log and make sure it has no 30XX error codes in its history. If it does, it's likely to have been recovered with heat and is likely to fail again soon. If all this is clear, I then look to see if the console has ever been opened before. Once this is verified, I move on to the cleaning of the MB with isopropyl alcohol. After all that's done, I will now do a delid, which is done in the safest possible way using sealant remover and gental heat. The IHS gets put in boiling water and cleaned, leaving no residue. It then gets another clean with isopropyl alcohol........ The point is it takes a full day to do the full diagnosis and referbishment, so it's a lot of work if done correctly. I have had situations where the error codes indicate a possible RSX failure in the future, so any delid of the cell or rsx could render the console useless. This is why the diagnosis is so important. To many people who do delids, don't do a syscon check and wonder why the console stops working. For costings, just find me on eBay and send me a message

Reflows are definitely not a permanent fix. Now we can read the system control (Syscon) It's still early days but already it gives a much better chance of a permanent fix 😀
@@timdark9282 PS3 are amazing especially jailbroken, mutiman emulation and even support for over clocking on the RSX.I think the PS3 is definitely going to be around for a long time with or without sonys support

Some slim CPU models have been soldered to the IHS
On my slim model no delid or other modification i have 57° cpu rsx 62° with 29% fun speed after 2 hours play. U use fun at 32% in this video if use syscon i think u have more than 60°.
Your model has a better GPU , takes less power to run the system, and is therefore more reliable. This model is the rare backwards compatible model. Because of the design flaw the GPU has, it needs to run under 68 degrees. If this was left on syscon, the console would get to 76 degrees, which would degrade the GPU and cause a system error. So, to keep the console cool and last longer, it needs the de-lid and liquid metal as well as webmans dynamic fan control. On this model, it's advisable to run the fan on 32 pecent fan speed as a minimum to ensure it stays cool, this increases the longevity of the console.
@@timdark9282 I had before another console fat model and i dameged when i try to remove ihs, i dameged some trails from procesor, it a dangerous operation because is not find special tools.
@laurentiuilina4992 The de-lid process is not easy and takes practice to get it right. I would recommend practising on a few scrap boards before attempting this on a working one

Why did you spread the thermal paste across the die like that lol, you just need a pea size
You absolutely must spread the liquid metal onto the die and under the heat spreader. This gives maximum thermal transfer to the heat sinks. I believe your thinking about normal thermal paste, yes with normal paste like MX4 you don't need to spread the paste

@@awsomestleaperd78 this is a fat PS3 it's very prone to the yellow light of death and to keep The thermals down on the die, liquid metal seems like the best idea here, maybe for the RAM chips he probably could have put a little bit of thermal paste on it but otherwise it's a great idea

@@awsomestleaperd78 Yes and no liquid metal is the best type of thermal conductive yes it would be better to have a better cooler but considering it is a PS3 the thermals are high to keep it cooler and plus the original thermal paste that would be on the die would be bad anyway why not make it a bit better and do some preventions in there like he did

@99magic92 it's not easy. However, if you look at the comments to that video, you will see many success stories. There is always a real risk of failure, and this will kill the console. I'm sorry to hear your console didn't make it.
I have discovered that you can buy cheap painter knives with plastic handles. You need the painters knife with a wooden handle. Also, the number knifes I used must correspond to the same knife you use. You must use sealant remover. What sealant remover did you use?
@@timdark9282 I paid £30 for it so I'm not bothered. I didn't even scrape it hard. The glue wouldn't budge no matter how well I heated it. I think it's best to just leave it alone and only apply thermal paste.
@@99magic92 Nahhh thats the worst thing you can do to your console, I sended my 2 consoles to an expert NSC, just did both of them easily. Heck even I did by myself (but yes first time I killed one of my fat ps3) the key is the right tool and do it SLOWLY and bam I did it. The hardest part is always the start.
Setting the system fan on 45 Will male the system run cool
Running the console on 45 percent fan speed is a little to high, you shouldn't really go above 35 percent on a backwards compatible PS3. This is because of the power it draws to run the fan, games like TLOU may shutdown because the capacitors cant allocate the required power to the CPU and GPU. This is because of the power it's taking to run the fan.
