  • Willy Ronis was a French photographer, the best-known of whose work shows life in post-war Paris and Provence. Ronis was born in Paris; his father was a Jewish refugee from Odessa, and his mother was a refugee from Lithuania, both escaped from the pogroms. His father opened a photography studio in Montmartre, and his mother gave piano lessons. After his father's death, in 1936, Ronis closed the studio and joined the photo agency Rapho, with Brassaï, Robert Doisneau and Ergy Landau. Ronis became the first French photographer to work for Life. The images created by Willis Ronis captured the simple pleasures of everyday life. Not one to focus on suffering, Ronis' photographs are often light-hearted, humor-filled, and full of compassion, embodiying the French term: joie de vivre.

These guys make great photos that you just can't create today. There is something about film photography that, even now digital can't replicate that natural and ethereal look and feeling. Hats off to these great photographers ! These photos do really make you think and wonder what times were like back then. Thank you for showing us this talented man.

Des photos merveilleusement belles, un maître du coup d'oeil comme d'autres photographes humanistes français ...

Emotionally and ethnographically very strong images. Thanks for showing these photos from an, for me up until now, unknown photographer.

not certain why this artist (and your choice of this artist) caught me off guard, but it did. the images can be - disconcerting, awkward and uncomfortable. this, by default - makes it a worthwhile choice. thank you!

Wonderful curation of his work. Time gives it a certain poignancy; I wonder if contemporary street photography is equal to the task when viewed 80 years hence.

Astonishing work , the kind of sensibility totally lacking in most of the rubbish passed as 'Street Photography' today, especially British & Japanese !
