- In this video I look at the work of great street photographer - Saul Leiter - certainly one of my street photography heroes. We'll look at some of his images, picking out some key learning points we can apply to our own work. This is the first in a series of my street photography heroes - I hope you enjoy it and would love to hear your thoughts and comments.

What an excellent, interesting and informative presentation!
That's too kind, Andrew - thanks very much! :-)
I just started shooting street photography and Saul resonates with me so much. When I started looking up some tips on street photography, I kept hearing "tell a story" or "the moment" but I never wanted to tell a story. I just wanted to share what I saw with the world. Thank you for this video, Brian! Very inspiring.
Thanks for commenting - glad you liked it :-) Happy New Year!
@@StreetSnappers Thank you! A happy new year to you as well!
Discovered him cause of RM and I slowly fall in love with his works.. He is so impressive
In a world of megapixels this channel is pure photography thank you sir
Thank you - that’s a great compliment:-)
i love that this video is not too much edited, a diferent style for UA-cam standards
Thanks Kevin - I'm a photographer first, a 'youtuber' second! I don't know much about fancy editing or post-production so I tend to stick to the simple stuff :-)
Adorable, the first time I saw Saul's work I fell in love with it, great videos you have here, and it’s really appreciated that there is no background music in them. :)
Thanks very much, Sara. I also find background much distracting!
This video, and probably the future ones, is a gift for those who love photography.
Thant's very kind, Antonio, thank you! :-)
Thanks for your wonderful insights on Paul Leiter. I am drawn to his photography and really enjoy shooting with my 85mm f1.8 lens. He is an inspiration. Thanks also for the so many videos that are helping me immensely in my pursuit of street photography.
No-nonsense, content rich and minimally edited video, a beautiful find in a world of annoying, fast paced but culturally empty channels. This is very nice!
That’s so kind - thank you! I’m trying to keep this channel free of annoying music, editing effects and unboxings!
Very good exploration Brian. "We often look but don't see" is a big takeaway for me. Thank you.
I watch this as often as I can. Street photography can get stuck in a rut. Many current photographers simply parrot other street photographers and rules and settings and composition. Saul Leiter reminds me we don't have to get stuck in ruts.
Exactly! Do your own thing, be original, enjoy it and don't worry about what others think :-). Happy New Year!
Great video Brian. His work is outstanding. I love that he went against the norm.
Excellent series. I love the simplistic of Vivian Maier, but Saul Leiter's abstract eye is a delight.
Thank you! I also love Vivian and I'm sure I'll cover her in a future video.
Saul Leiter was an absolute legend, and one of my favourite exemplars. I really like the points you drew from his work, nice video!
Thanks Adam - glad it hit the spot :-)
I'm thrilled to have stumbled across this fascinating snapshot of the work of Saul Leiter. I've been photographing through patterned glass (the sort you find in old bathrooms) to turn the mundane into something magical (it's very hit and miss and much more miss than hit) while wantonly breaking the conventional photography rules and it's wonderfully playful and experimental - and often rewarding. I believe my technique to be unique. And I love what I (try to) do. So, thank you, Brian, for giving me a glimpse into Saul Leiter's world.
hey Lex Luthor, great video.
Great video, Saul Leiter is always an inspiration
Thanks - glad you liked it :-)
Excellent break down. Waiting for the rest of the series.
Thank you Helmet! Lot's more to come in this series - the next will be William Klein, coming next month :-)
love Saul Leiter's work, also love your video!
Thanks very much! :-)
Really enjoyed this and looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks very much Morris :-)
both he and Haas are my favorite . the perspective and consistency in their work was in paralleled .
Ernst Haas - one of my favourites, too, and I love his New York work :-)
Love this video. Thanks for producing it. I generally find your videos interesting, but the way you discuss your heroes adds something extra.
Kind of you to say so - many thanks :-)
Nice analyze, would appreciate to watch Saul's pics longer, when you refer to them
Good idea - I'll do it next time - thank you!
Concur. I had to rewind and pause each time. Excellent presentation otherwise, sir.
This is a wonderful review and I learned so much today. RS. Canada

My pleasure Kebs - thanks for the feedback and good luck with your street photography!
Great lesson in street photography! Great lesson in the History of Photography! You don't say All About Saul Leiter, but you say the essential, stimulating our curiosity, our creativity! Congrats!
Thanks very much for you kind words :-)
Thank you, this was a great summary of Leiter’s methods.
Greetings from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I love this! 15 mins is just perfect for a quick overview of a photographer. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

This is excellent. Thanks for making it.

Thanks! For those not familiar with Leitner's work, he was very properly introduced.

Love this series. I'm learning a lot.

great précis and analysis of Saul Leiter’s work Brian. Reminds me, I must watch “in no great hurry” again - fabulous film!
Cheers Wendy! I think Leiter can be an inspiration to us all :-)
Hello!
Where can i find this film online?
Great introduction to Saul Leiter and inspirational commentary. Thanks for another superb video Brian.
Thanks very much for the kind comments, Paul :-)
Im glad you brought up the point of vertical composition. No one ever brings it up in his photos.
I think it was very much part of his style and nice to see more people doing it lately :-)
Just discovered this channel after going through the "Mastering Street Photography" book (a must buy if you are starting street photography). Really great content and presentation skills...as excellent as the book...rare today having a channel on photography about photography rather than most of the channels out there which are gear oriented. Well done Sir!
Thanks the the feedback, David. Best of luck with your street photography and do keep in touch!
Thank you very much for this wonderful introduction to the work of Saul Leiter. The whole presentation is also made with attention to detail and with a good feeling for the artist. Well done, very excellent!
Thanks, really enjoyed that! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks for the feedback! - there's lots more to come :-)
Excellent commentary! Greetings from Portland, OR.
Thanks Daryl - good to have you on board from Portland!
Very enjoyable and informative presentation. Your Leiter tips are eminently applicable to other photographic genres by removing the word "street" from your phraseology. Thank you for producing this video.
Thanks for your feedback, Roy - glad you liked it!
So well spoken as always😉
Cheers Matthew :-)
Excellent video Brian, and the beginning of a great series. - what a great idea! Look forward to the next one.
Thanks very much, Neil! Who else would you like to see in this series? I'm compiling a list! :-)
Thank you for this very interesting video. Looking forward to more of your videos.
My pleasure, Luis, thanks for watching. Please stay tuned - there's lots more to come!
Well done, your aproach to street is experienced and fresh at a time. SAUL is one of my favorites beside Fan Ho for b&w !

Thanks very much, Jeremy - kind of you to say so! :-)
One of my favorite photographers (he used a zoom)and Robert Frank is another of my favorites.. Great series..
Thanks Robert. I also love Franks work and he'll certainly be appearing later in this series :-)
Great video Brian! I'm just getting into photography again, and love Saul Leiter's work as an inspiration.
Great video on one of my favourist photographers
Thanks very much for the feedback Michael :-)
Cool video. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.
And the super cool song at the end is "Like Lee" by the Mini Vandals.
Thanks for your feedback, Gregory :-)
Absolutely amazing discussion. Was not aware of Saul Leiter. His work and vision strongly appeal to me because I have a similar approach to making images but hadn’t really given myself permission to let go and follow my natural vision until now. Thank you Brian. I look forward to spending some time studying the work of Saul Leiter in greater detail.
Many thanks, Robert. Do try to have a look at the book I mentioned - it will give you a much deeper insight into Leiter’s work. I think he’s the perfect example of how street photography can be relaxed and not always ‘in your face’. Thanks for tuning in!
Lovely spotlight on a great artist. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated :-)
An eyeopenning presentation of Saul Leitter 's vision. Thanks a lot!
To anyone watching this video and you want to know Saul Leiters work 'Forever Saul Leiter' is also an absolute must buy. There are so many wonderful pictures in the book it is an absolute bargain.
Wow! Saul Leiter, a really nice new acquaintance. Thanks a lot Brian!
Glad you like him, Peter - he's an inspiration to many of us :-)
Enjoyed this video. Saul Leiter is my favorite photographer. His work as a painter of abstractions shines through his photos. His work added to my desire to photograph the mundanely beautiful in life. Also a fan of Fred Herzog
Thanks Susan. I agree about Herzog - he’s one of my favourites and on my list for a video :-)
Excellent video, Brian. It's going to be a great series. Look forward to the next one.
Thanks very much Andy - lots more to come!
Outstanding! Thank you, i will be watching.
Thanks very much for the feedback Jim!
Saul Leiter has been one of my street photography hero's also, and his use of color has been an inspiration to me. great video, thanks.

Really excellent way you introduce Saul Leiter to me. Thank you for the great video.
Thanks for your feedback, Carlos - I appreciate your support :-)
I haven’t knowingly seen his work, but after seeing this video I will buy the book you mentioned,it’s a style that I would feel comfortable with. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, Desmond. It's certainly a more 'comfortable' style of street photography - hope it works for you!
Really great video! Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it Leigh - thanks for your support :-)
Really interesting, I admire Saul's work
"Get out of your comfort zone" - words to live by. Combine that with "no agenda" and that whole concept of "getting lucky" suddenly makes sense.
Great video, Brian. I love Saul Leiter's work. I have the book, All About Saul Leiter but haven't finished it yet. I'm trying to make it last :)
I also have both your street photography books, which I'd happily recommend to anyone interested in street shooting.
Thanks very much Amin! Let's try to do a bit of Leiter-ing on our workshop on Friday!
@@StreetSnappers I'm definitely up for that! Batteries charged, spare SD card at the ready :)

Brian, what a great overview and insight into Saul Leiters art of photography. Thanks a lot for this. Regards, Thomas
Hi Thomas - many thanks for your feedback - glad you liked it :-)
Going for that long lens look for my next bout of street photography! Totally inspiring!!!!
Thanks Steve - best of luck with it!
I'm excited to see the next video in this series.
Thanks Bryan. William Klein coming next!
If your interested in seeing his work Saul Leiters exhibition is on at Milton Keynes MK Gallery until 2nd June 2024. It has travelled from Japan to the UK and then it's next stop is Germany. What is interesting is the images are not large like Don Mc Cullins exhibition at the TATE modern, most are small prints printed during 1950s even his large famous colour prints are roughly A4 size. The exhibition consists of four rooms dedicated to his work with the addition of some of his paintings. It's worth going to see.
Beautiful content sir! Cheers!
Thank you David - glad you like it!
Great video. More of this series please!
Thanks Douglas - lots more to come!
That was fantastic! Thank you! Subscribed for more!
My pleasure, Chris - thanks very much for your support :-)
I've only recently become aware of Leiter's work despite being into street photography for years. However, street has become so formulaic that I almost couldn't stand it anymore. I've seen the same shot/situation a thousand times. Which is why Leiter immediately grabbed me. I don't want to know everything when I see a shot. I want some ambiguity. I like the fact that people aren't necessarily central in his work. They're just another object in a bigger whole.
Great points, Richard, and I completely agree with you. 'Holding something back' is a great and under-used technique in street photography!
One of my favorites.
Mine too :-)
Thank you! First time I saw your video. Subscribed in first 5 minutes. Will be checking out everything else on you chanell. By the way have you done a video on Louis Stettner yet? Like Kertesz , Stettner shot whatever he saw that interested him. In 1996 I met him at Times Square NYC. Great shooter
Thanks very much John. Sterner isn’t on my (long!) list yet but I’ll take a look - thanks for the suggestion :-)
Yes mainly portrait orientation and it's on film so NO CROPPING here... And because he used mostly a long focal, like a palette of painter, he was able to restrict the number of colors. He was not a colorist painter. What a real Master!
finest video brian! very well done!!!
Thanks very much Jan - glad you liked it :-)
